Truer Than It Should Be
referencegirl13 September 2019
For all the naysayers out there, there are plenty of pockets out here - including in the US - that are exactly like this. Don't like it because it portrays men badly? If you're a man, when you see a show like this, don't scream "not all men." Recognize that women live with thing this every day and have some empathy. If only Lilith were real.

Not bad for watching while you play on your phone.
katharath7 September 2019
Actually better than I expected- it's not actually "scary", and the message is a bit heavy handed (though enjoyable enough), but the cast is decent and that probably elevates it a bit. Not a bad way to pass an afternoon, and I'd rate this one better than most of the Into the Dark movies I've seen.

Religious people are freaks
coltoncoatefilm10 August 2020
The real horror in this installment is just how creepy these types of things are. Prepare to feel very uncomfortable. I think they could have gone a little bit further with that aspect and also could have ramped up the thrills a little bit more, but it was still a fun ride. Definitely in the top 5 of Into The Dark.

Not bad, not amazing

Warning: Spoilers
The actresses were well casted and very good at portraying their desperation for validation from their abusive fathers. The main thing that was bad about this was the ending. The "Lillith" story makes a lot more sense as a mythical motivation for these girls. Her story should have just opened up the girls' eyes to the REAL horrors around them. Instead, she posessed everyone at the end and made it goofy. Lacy's death was ultimately in vain because her father wasn't alive for long enough to suffer that guilt. The ending was bizarrely supernatural and provides no actual conclusion. Are the men dead? Are the girls now demons/followers of demons? Doesn't that just further solidify their fathers' fears? Where are the girls going at the end if not with Lillith? A real, tangible ending would have been more satisfying and told a better story.

Besides that, the story was genuinely good. Purity camps are a real and horrifying thing. Some aren't as extreme as locking girls in cages, but they actually do similar rituals to that. Common practices are wearing all white, wearing locked belts that their fathers hold keys to, and signing contracts saying a girl belongs to her father until she is married to a man her father approves of. The realizations of the girls mirrors real life.

Eh....

What is happening with "Blumhouse" movies? The Blumhouse label used to mean quality, original stories, especially in the horror genre. I am seeing Blumhouse on everything these days and so much of it is medicore, including this. The setting of the film SHOULD be so creepy - it's basically a cult. But it feels so light and breezy. Young teens might like it.

Great scares and symbolism however the ending was sub par at best. Really don't know if they could have made any better of one given the plot but idk

Midsommar?
justynshere14 September 2019
It's like someone seen the trailer for Midsommar and wanted to capitalize on it so they made a movie about what they thought Midsommar was going to be. Like a fan fiction of sorts. It's not worth it. It's not a bad film, it's just not from an original and thoughtful place and it shows it.

chilling
michelle-birdsell8 September 2019
A steady build up of doom and dread. The story drew me in right away and the tension kept building throughout. The "scary" part is really the men in this movie, especially because there are men in our society who actually agree with the beliefs they espouse.

Good premise - You wait a long time for the payoff and when you get there, it's not great
FckVwls13 February 2021
Love, love the premise which is women's empowerment and unravelling the complete BS that is religion's bid to control women by limiting / squelching / controlling their sexuality. But you wait so long for the payoff, and when it finally comes, it's a let down. Same movie should be done over with a better middle and end. Must admit, a let down for horror film buffs like myself (in many ways), but the feminist theme had me enjoying anyway for about 2/3 of the movie.

This Movie Is so Bad!!! Nothing Happens!
webbbvanessa18 December 2019
NOTHING EXCITING HAPPENS!

It is as cliche as it gets. The story-line is boring and played out. The script and dialogue are awful. The music is something out of a Disney channel original movie. So of course the actors had nothing to work with.

I actually liked the story of Lilith, until this dumb movie ruined it for me.

Plus absolutely nothing happens. The main character sees Lilith a few times, and the men talk about their daughters' virginity in a played-out misogynistic way. And that's it. There isn't any build-up or suspense, nothing. There's just a bunch of teenage girls dressed in white with their sexist dads, and three teenage boys.

One of the worst films I have ever seen in my life.

One mans demon is another woman's angel
stoned_reviewer10 September 2019
'Into The Dark' never disappoints with its trippy horror genre anthology but this might be my favorite one. Not only is it genuinely creepy (hello Momo-esque smile on Lilith) but it encapsulates the modern day feminist movement pretty beautifully without all the obnoxiousness. Simply empowering and satisfying for all genders guaranteed while delivering on the creeps. Watch it!

Timely and entertaining
rivertam2625 March 2020
In celebration of women's day comes Hulu's Into the dark Pure. The movie centers around two young girls that are taken to a misogynistic religious camp to pledge their virginity by their father. Automatically there is a creepy, hunky priest Pastor Seth played by sexy Scott Porter of Hart of Dixie. He speaks brazenly about the sexuality of women and how they belong to men. As the film goes along a group of boys are introduced who try and lure the girls into temptation. But one night while having fun they try and call forth Lillith who doesn't take what's happening to women likely. The movie is timely and important but never preachy. At times it can feel a little clunky and unfocused but ultimately it is a unique little spin on the material although it's a bit goofy.

Another dud

These get worse and worse. I'm not sure why I watch them. Maybe it's boredom and I hold out hope that they will get better. They haven't. 12 episodes in and not one I would recommend. Take a pass on this one. Take a pass on all of them.

Niceley done critizism of religion and the truth that no one can possess another persony body or mind
patrickfilbeck23 September 2021
This episode is a nicely done critizism of religion and its depowering moment of women. It would have been nice to see some nice-minded men, but for the purpose of the thrill I don't think the decision to paint them all bad in this serie-movie is coming out of a political agenda.

The actors are good (except for the main actress) and the story ist gripping. The cinematograpy may be one of the best in the entire series.

Warning: Spoilers
I tried to give this trash episode a 0. I really did. Someone PLEASE tell me it's current 6.5 rating (tied for the highest rating with the superb Down) is only because the episode just came out just recently and it will tumble into oblivion eventually! This has got to be the worst episode of the season and I haven't even seen them all yet. The acting was BLAH. Actors delivered their lines with the passion of spoiled milk. The main girl had all the personality of a wall and she looks like she's pushing 35 years old, yet we're supposed to believe she's a pure and innocent teenager. And also every episode I've seen up to this point always had a concrete reason for the horror. Now all of a sudden we're delving into the Supernatural?

There were also ripoffs of things that just came out in the last year. Lilith had the exact same creepy face as the possessed version of the characters in Truth or Dare, which I guess makes sense because the same studio Blumhouse did it, but that stupid face was one of the biggest complaints about the movie. So the most powerful female entity in the history of mankind sports the exact same smile as the dumb-looking demons in a kids' party game? Also, what's with the current obsession with Lilith on Netflix shows? In addition to this turd offering, both Chambers and Sabrina pay homage to Satan's lover.

Also, somehow this episode felt like the cheapest one yet, with D-list actors, a Lifetime movie vibe, and drab setting. Most of the other episodes actually felt borderline like hiqh quality features compared to this one. A very dubious way to end the season.

I liked the ending and enjoyed the movie for what it was.
kevin_robbins12 May 2021
Pure (2019) is another Into the Dark movie available for free on Hulu. The storyline focuses on a group of teenage girls who go to a "purity camp" with their fathers to promise they will remain "pure" until marriage. As the girls talk they have very different perspectives on their camp experience. Meanwhile, the camp and its counselor will challenge the girls purity in a series of unforeseen tests. This movie is directed by Hannah Macpherson (Sick House & Trinkets) and stars Jahkara Smith (NOS492), McKaley Miller (Ma), Ciara Bravo (A Teacher) and Scott Porter (Speed Racer). The storyline is interesting in its own way and the characters and acting of the female campers were good (the dads and the counselors not so much). There were opportunities in this to be way more intense but they didn't ratchet it up to its potential. I liked the ending and enjoyed the movie for what it was. I'd score it a 5.5/10 and would recommend it if nothing else is on.

Worst Ending?!
myreviewss6 October 2019
The movie starts out, slightly confusing, but entertaining none the less. So much so, that I regrettably watched til the end. All throughout I felt a slight cringe in the script, but hoped for the best. Depending on the actors, the acting ranged from passable to great. Inevitably I became invested in the characters and the story. Only to be disappointed with a sudden cringy ending. I believe in equality. But this script felt more like an attempt at a cleverly disguised attack on men. It felt as though, someone has written this script and had it taken from them by an unprofessional, that wanted to just get back at men. It was a confusing ending, became quickly cringy and left me feeling attacked by the message. If you're going to push a message, do it in a way I can accept and watch. This movie had potential, it turned out to be a waste of a good setup.

A Film that focuses on multiple viewpoints
jeremiahlhorton7 September 2019
Into the Dark has delivered us some pretty good entries and some ok ones, but not so many bad ones. "Pure" installment to the series isn't so much a horror film or a thriller; it's a mystery. It's a slow burner like all of the other entries and provides specific elements on several viewpoints on religion, women empowerment, women's rights, control and temptation. I'm a guy of course who found this installment to be the best one next to "Culture Shock". Elements in the film are bits and pieces of the films "Midsommar" and "Carrie". This film is not for the closed minded. Give it a shot and I hope you enjoy it!

[7.4] Freedom aflame
cjonesas10 June 2021
An interesting screenplay throughout with great acting, beautiful actresses and touches of supernatural. All the suspense and setup that it built up went aflame and to dust with the idiotic ending.

All grains of rating greatness painfully gathered dispersed to a magnanimous 7 from the purest 10.

Finally, an Into the Dark with substance!
ansonthepants-2086621 August 2021
Just started watching the series in order and this is the best one yet! The stories don't really have twists or surprises; it's always clear from the beginning who the "bad guy" is. Although mildly entertaining, the series hasn't been thought provoking. What makes "Pure" the most horrifying so far is that such people and events really do happen. Is it no wonder this episode's lowest ratings are among males; and the older the group of males, the lower the rating. Apparently, this episode's message was clear.

Another Feminist into the dark episode...
wesperkins26 March 2024
Here we go again, another episode that either forces a topic that doesn't belong in a horror movie, or is just outright against certain things. This one goes after men and christianity. Of course, there will be high ratings by people who don't like those two things. A lot of these episodes are very woke. My main problem with them, is when they are forced in a movie like Crawlers, a movie about an alien invasion. Not the movie for it. This one doesn't force it, the whole movie is about it. It's over the top, with extreme characters and situations that would never rrakky happen.

Let's take the politics out and then just examine the movie. The plot is b movie at best, The execution is meh. The camera work isn't bad, some of the acting isn't bad, some is. Jo was good, the main character not so much. The ending was semi predictable.

I think it gets a lot of positive reviews because there are certain groups who love Movies that make fun of christians, and it gets a lot of negative reviews for the same reasons. The best episodes are the ones that don't involve politics or being woke or even being too conservative. I like a movie that doesn't try and preach. This one definitely does. Just tell us the story without trying to give us your political beliefs. It feels like that's more important than the movie. When that happens, it's never a good thing for the movie. Not sure why so many episodes in this series try and preach, rather than tell the story. It feels like the directors can't help themselves. I like a few of these episodes, but this wasn't one of my favorites. Obviously some people do like it and good for them. If you don't lean left, you probably won't like it though.

Pure

Warning: Spoilers
No twist, no crazy ending, this was just a mess. It just felt like whoever wrote this wanted to take shots at religion, but there was no purpose for this and we all wasted time watching it.

Very "meh" movie
meaganm-036295 October 2020
I would highly recommend this movie for anyone with daddy issues (or onlyfans users). The "evil men in authority" trope was so hamfisted and over the top. This could have been done in such a more nuanced and realistic way. The actors and actresses were terrible. Only good thing that the movie had going for it were the beautiful sets and the imagery.
