Ring of Honor Wrestling: ROH on HonorClub #62 (2024)
May 2
I think that ROH is the best weekly show on TV by a wide margin at this point, and they accomplish it with not the deepest roster in the world.
But this Jacksonville show was a bit of a throwaway. It was difficult to watch with the daylight and the camera, but there were way too many squash matches. Over half of the card should not be squash matches.
They are building up Queen Aminata well though and this should be another good match for Athena in the near future, before Aminata likely heads back to the main AEW roster.
The Infantry have been the breakout team the last six months and hopefully they get pushed soon too.
Elsbeth: A Classic New York Character (2024)
Episode 2
It kind of dragged a bit early on as they introduced the character and the setting and gave some of the worst vibes of Only Murders in the Building that we have seen.
But once it got going it was fun. I just worry about the show becoming repetitive with Elsbeth immediately knowing who did it and pursuing the big name celebrity guest star throughout the episode. That format can get a bit tiring.
This is clearly CBS' version of Poker Face, but that didn't use the same format and style every week. Shaking it up slightly is what made it work. I hope we get one episode where Elsbeth is wrong or she at least is confused early on.
All Elite Wrestling: Dynamite: Dynasty Fallout/Coast to Coast (2024)
April 24
An uneven episode for sure, but there were some decent things.
Willow Nightingale is still awkward in these in-ring promos, but this feud with Mercedes Mone is not working. After Double or Nothing they both need to move on to their own things.
Chris Jericho using Brian Myers' gimmick from TNA feels tired. We all knew what Big Bill was going to say when he came out and it seems like Jericho is rebuilding yet another stable.
Tony Khan is akward as a character, but the main event final segment was certainly funny. Let's see where this goes, but they've successfully rebuilt Jack Perry as a top heel now.
Ring of Honor Wrestling: ROH on HonorClub #61 (2024)
April 25
Ring of Honor is definitely my favorite weekly TV show when it comes to wrestling, but this was an underwhelming episode. Blake Christian getting all of these main events when he is not a regular is a slap in the face, and feels like it is done to appease GCW and nothing else.
Leila Grey getting back in the rotation is a good move.
Acknowledging Maria's relationship with Mike Bennett was important and there could be a good dynamic at play if they start a feud with Griff Garrison and Cole Karter.
Overall, kind of underwhelming show though. They can't all be great episodes but let's move on after this one.
Ghosts: The Traveling Agent (2024)
The Traveling Agent
Pete having the power to leave the property is definitely a huge development and a good use of the character. This could come into play in a big way whenever this show does decide to wrap.
But the scenes at the big box store were not funny at all, and everything with Thor and Flower is really, really bad, not to mention the basement ghost.
This show has a cult following and people love it, but week to week it is just not compelling television. They had a chance to shake things up with a new castmember in the mix but it looks like they already dropped the ball with that move and didn't even show her today. Oh well.
Not Dead Yet: Not a Ghost Yet (2024)
Episode 210
"Not a Ghost Yet" attempted to give us an emotional ending and a potential series finale sendoff if that was the case, but at this point I don't think it matters. They set up things for Duncan to return as the owner of the building and reappear if they get a third season.
It was just not funny though. Gina Rodriguez is doing her best, but there is just not enough material here. Maybe give her a permanent love interest, or add another writer to the mix, but this is not working and if the show does come back it needs a serious overhaul to try and gain some fans. Otherwise, it would surely end after a third season.
Not Dead Yet: Not the End Yet (2024)
Not the End Yet
There was certainly a good twist ending here with Duncan potentially passing away when we all just thought he was randomly scolding Nell, but overall this is just not the kind of comedy we deserve.
Not enough laughs and not just enough good content tonight for me to enjoy the show.
The Lexie character is really terrible and feels like a caricature of a caricature and not anything that great. It is painfully unfunny at times and I just wonder why they have not been able to fix this character and write her best since the first season, but at times it almost feels like it is getting worse week to week.
Halo: Aleria (2024)
Episode 205
I do not like describing something as physically painful because I feel like that is insulting to people actually going through pain, but "Aleria" may warrant that kind of description.
This was just a bad episode of the cast sulking and sharing their feelings, but still not really advancing the storyline(s) forward in any meaningful way.
We are prepping for a big battle and a fight for "humanity" at the end of the season, but the writers truly have no idea of how to get there.
This was not good at all and it ran for far longer than the last episode which only amplified how ineffective the show was.
The NBA on TNT: NBA Playoffs - R1G2 - 76ers vs Knicks (2024)
76ers vs. Knicks
As a Brooklyn Nets fan it is difficult to figure out who to try and root for in this series as I intensely dislike both teams, but probably the 76ers winning would be the better result.
But no such luck here. Philadelphia let game one slip through their fingers, and they let this one get away too with an unbelievable collapse in the final few seconds.
The Knicks have a special team and as a Nets fan I hate to see it. If the 76ers can't win with Jalen Brunson having a terrible shooting night, this series could be over relatively quickly and they could be heading home earlier than they anticipated.
All Elite Wrestling: Dynamite: Last Stop Before Dynasty (2024)
April 17
Will Ospreay and Claudio Castagnoli had a solid match, but I feel like it could have been a lot better. Will is rightfully saving himself for the PPV and the dream match against Bryan Danielson.
Deonna Purrazzo needs some sort of character shift and that pains me to write as a huge fan of hers. Definitely not a heel turn yet, but maybe a feud with someone else, away from the title picture, just to give the fans a different kind of look.
Willow Nightingale very well may get her crowning moment at Dynasty and I hope so because she has organically grown as a star in ROH and more recently now with AEW.
Halo: Sword (2024)
Episode 202
I guess this may have been better than the season premiere, but I am not even sure of that.
The scenes with the Spartans doing their training and working together and having a laugh, that felt real and good. That is the kind of dynamic that made shows like Yellowstone with the ranchers and army dramas over the years connect with the audience.
But there's just not a lot of drama going on. We had a shocking end to what was in store for Dr. Halsey in Season 1 and they immediately killed any interest we may have in that character moving forward.
I am just not picking up what this show is putting down right now.
All Elite Wrestling: Dynamite: Evening at the Coliseum (2024)
April 10
Mariah May has been growing on me a bit, but I still think there are a lot better wrestlers who are perhaps more deserving of the spot she has.
Chris Jericho desperately needs a reboot of some kind. I don't think he has to go away like some of the more brutal and vocal fans are saying, but this isn't working.
Swerve Strickland vs. Samoa Joe should be a good match, but the build has been really disappointing. This is a long time coming for Swerve, but it feels like a lot of the momentum that he had from a few months ago and from the Hangman Page feud has all but evaporated at this current point in time.
Halo: Visegrad (2024)
Episode 203
A bit more action here, a little bit of intrigue, but this show still is just not hooking me in at all this season. Year one made a lot of sense (at least in the world of Halo) with the battle between the evil doctors and politicians against the Spartans.
This season I just don't get the sense that they're having that same kind of moral struggle, or really giving us anything at all that interesting. We're more than a quarter of the way in, more than a third of the way in this season, and it just not hooking me in at all. The magic that they had that first season has not been replicated at all.
Halo: Reach (2024)
Episode 204
I am surprised to see high scores and reviews for this episode when it was just nonsensical violence. Yes, some moments were kind of entertaining, and there was a mildly uplifting speech before the battle, but it was just gore and bloodshed and fighting for the sake of fighting.
We need a story and we have yet to get any of that this season. That is not at all why I think people will tune into Halo, but we need a bit more than this.
It was not bad, definitely not bad, but people scoring this episode nearly at a 10, I just don't get it because I saw things absolutely vastly different when watching.
Avoidance: Episode #2.6 (2024)
Episode 206
The which airport, the London Airport bit was good, but overall this was a really, really underwhelming finale for Avoidance.
I am not sure where the show went wrong, but this felt like the final episode of it, even though I think the door is definitely open for at least one more season. We need to see Jonathan with the baby and maybe even find a way to screw things up with Clare again.
It just wasn't funny though. It felt like it was dragging and dragging and it was all too predictable what was going to happen.
The first half of the second series was good, but it fell apart these last three episodes.
Avoidance: Episode #2.5 (2024)
Episode 205
They really went the route of having the walk-in on them kissing? In my review for the last episode I talk about all of the cliches this show has unwillingly turned to and we got that on full display here with that. Funny when Three's Company would do it, but we're half a century later and it is not that funny anymore.
This show really seems to have fallen off in the back half of the second season and it is disappointing.
Not having Jonathan and Megan be end game felt like the wrong move. An expected break-up, but the wrong move for sure. Time will tell if they can change my mind in the finale.
Avoidance: Episode #2.4 (2024)
Episode 204
This has been a solid second series of the show, but this episode just felt a little bit dull. The first season played into a lot of sitcom cliches despite the premise feeling a little bit fresh, but they've gone overboard a bit this year.
This took the cake though having the parents of Clare and having them put on an act about getting along and potentially even getting married.
There were still a few laughs in this one, but overall a really dull episode and one that was clearly the worst of the season to this point.
Let's see if they can rebound and save the season with the last two though.
Avoidance: Episode #2.3 (2024)
Episode 203
Aisling Bea has been a great addition to the cast, even if she had to take a backseat in this episode. I liked the bits and pieces we got from her on Smothered, but now she is much more prevalent on this show.
The dinner party and struggling parent relationship was great here though. They definitely played into a lot of very obvious and dated cliches, but it was funny and the bit about not knowing the Bollywood movie was great too.
This episode gave me hope that amidst the family friendly content we usually get from Avoidance, that they can do sharp and biting comedy as well for the older fans.
Avoidance: Episode #2.2 (2024)
Episode 2
The baby clothes bit was kind of interesting here, but overall I feel like they might be dedicating a bit too much time to that pair. This is an ensemble show, but it wasn't quite that in the first season so it does require a bit of a jump for sure. They have two comedy vets in those roles so that helps.
I just don't want the show to lose its true purpose and deviate too far from what the goal was of Jonathan sherking his responsibilities and wanting to find a way to reunite with his wife.
Good episode though and looking forward to more of the second series of Avoidance and how it all plays out.
American Idol: The Search for a Superstar: 712 (Rock & Roll Hall of Fame) (2024)
Episode 712
Some of the song choices were well done, some were a little too obvious and on the nose like Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin, but it was another decent show here. For the most part the right talent went through, but I do wonder how some of these acts have really made it this far.
I was worried about Emmy Russell as she did not have a belt it out kind of song and instead had a more relaxed tone, but she eventually got the nod to go through, awkward reading from Ryan Seacrest on it at all.
This has been a decent season for the show, but let's see how the final few weeks go before passing sweeping judgments.
Spinal Destination: Episode #1.6 (2024)
Episode 6
They saved the best for last and gave us a fun little episode to wrap up the first season of Spinal Destination. I hope that we get a second season, they definitely teased it with violent Tessa reminded her of the goal at the end, but you never know with programs like this.
Seeing the gang break out, and seeing their marital issues on display was a natural progression. I am glad they did not get too sappy with everything, but they still teased some problems outside of comedic laughs.
This show could have better writing for sure, but this is the kind of representation and premise we need far more of on TV.
Spinal Destination: Episode #1.5 (2024)
Episode 5
They teased something a little bit different here as for the first time the gang all banded together and tried to pull off a party. Not exactly enthralling TV, but it had been long overdue for them to tap into the One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest element so clearly at play here, so at least we got it.
Looking forward to the finale here, but overall I just think the show never quite found its footing. Was the goal for Tessa to ever grow as a person, or for her to just make snarky responses the whole time? If it was the latter, mission accomplished for sure. If it was the former, not at all did they do the job.
Avoidance: Episode #2.1 (2024)
Episode 201
Avoidance was a nice little show when it came along in 2022. Not groundbreaking comedy at all, but a few faces you have seen on television before, and a simple enough premise that they committed to for the bulk of the first series.
This was a fine start back and I am glad to see not much has changed and these characters have not really grown much, despite the time jump.
Funny, but certainly there is a lot more potential for laughs as the season progresses. But a good start and glad to have the show back, let's see if it wraps after this second series or they have future events in store for them.
Star Trek: Discovery: Face the Strange (2024)
Episode 504
Finally we got an episode that was a little bit fun and a little bit outside the box.
Time travel is a staple of any kind of sci-fi show, but for some reason has not been utilized as much as it could have been on Star Trek: Discovery. It is such an easy way to create fun episodes, but for some reason was just not turned to.
There are a lot of logic flaws in this episode, and you could easily nitpick a bunch of small things, but I choose not to do that because I have complained enough about this show as of late.
I enjoyed a lot of this and that is more than enough for me because it has been awhile since that was the case.
NWA Powerrr: Episode #17.2 (2024)
April 16
We got a Kenzie Paige promo and is good to see her improve on that front and for the direction and production to improve a little bit since the move to the CW App. Kenzie is clearly the ace of the women's division and maybe the NWA as a whole, so I hope they continue to build her up as that star.
The main event tag match ran far too long. I am fine with Blunt Force Trauma remaining on top as long as they have Aron Stevens alongside them as the mouthpiece manager, but the matches need to be kept short. Rodney Mack is not equipped to work long bouts in 2024, so they have to take that into consideration.
