Violence?
tenealesharman25 February 2020
We're there violent scenes? Yes! Is outlander a graphic and at time violent show? YES I think the end of season 1 was so much harder to watch then this. I love the direction of this season so far, and I'm excited about what's to come. Jamie fraiser is just absolute perfection. This show has had slower stories which I've struggled to get into, but for me this is great. I don't know if anything can compare with season 1, but it's still great

A Very Intelligent Episode
jmansmannstjohnslrev29 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Between Two Fires is the type of episode you saw in the earlier seasons of the tv series. It is a workman like episode, in that while the first episode of the season rebooted Roger and Brianna's relationship and set up the overarching conflict of the regulator arc this episode sets up the individual conflicts for the season. Jaime walking between two fires, finding himself in the middle of a conflict and trying to come out of it in the best way possible for he and his family. Claire trying to fight history, fate, and the intransigence of the 18th century through modern medicine, Roger trying to become a "man of worth" who is capable of providing for his family and earning his father-in-law's respect and Brianna, who is haunted by the ghost and threat of Stephen Bonnet.

It's just a very intelligent episode as much of the substance of the episode is not present in the books, but nonetheless feels faithful to characters and the story. I think adding Sam and Caitriona on as producers really pays dividends in this season, and I often wonder what impact they might have had on the storylines in Season 5. It's episodes like this that make Outlander so great because they put in the work, they build a foundation that makes the payoff more enticing and believable, something that was missing in the previous season. While not memorable, I think it is episodes like this in Season 5 that are going to give us a 6th and 7th season of Outlander because it's episodes like these that set up the truly memorable episodes that are forthcoming in this season.

Reality is messy
cymrycat-9249924 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Reality is sometimes messy and bloody. Claire is trying to better understand why a man died so she performs an autopsy. She also needs someone to help her and teach so after Claire dies the Ridge will still have medical care. Marsali butchers a lamb. This IS how life was in the 18th century. You couldn't go into a supermarket to find your meat neatly packaged up wrapped in plastic wrap. I, personally, have helped to butcher deer which my family eats. I have personally made sausage. I have even attempted black pudding. Pirates were men without pity and without honor. This would have been a scourge the coastal areas of the Carolinas were acquainted with. And military men have been known to strike out in anger.

If the blood offends you, I am sorry. But reality is messy.

I like how they are weaving aspects of the book into the show (not necessarily in the order in which they appear in the book). It will be interesting to see how other aspects are included and what new ideas are included. Overall this was an EXCELLENT episode. It moves the story along, giving just enough to hint at what WILL eventually happen (major plot points) without giving it away to non-book readers.

previews reviews are hilarious
mourad-got424 February 2020
Complaining about violence and graphic images when there's far far worse in the previous seasons (and it started very early on thanks to black jack randall); have you been watching a different show all this time? i couldn't stop laughing for 5 minutes straight after reading some of those reviews. thanks for the laugh

anyway great episode. it's still setting up the season nicely after the wedding focused episode of last week. love the formation of the claire/marsali duo. and bonnet is back, there's a sense of threat settling.

Ignore people complaining about violence
joniq200224 February 2020
I jumped on here to see the reviews before i got home.. It is not violent nor graphic...either the reviewers must have been..god only knows..I don't..they must have only ever watched the Brady bunch...previous episodes were far more violent..I don't understand such reviews..to come from a country with so many guns and so,much violence is frankly bewildering and yet so squeamish about history.. It's going away from the books more... All I'd say is don't re read the books before watching the new season If you come in with an open mind you'll enjoy it more

Important Decisions ahead!
veroalealvarez25 February 2020
Great episode, many story lines are beginning to evolve! I wish the episodes were longer. The way Claire and Roger connect is wonderful! Marsali is giving us life with a whole new dimension to the character, which is so different from the books. Kudos to the writers for making the Jamie and the regulators' storyline so interesting! I am all in!

fast and furious

Well done. Jamie can't win, Roger can't shoot, Bree can't get that out of her head, Claire can't dispense medicine without people thinking she's a witch, Murtagh can't be a good guy and leave. Fabulous episode, so much going on!

Who's the villain?
immarynelson25 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Many things happen in the name of war, using it as an excuse to torture should not be one. The tar and feather scene was very difficult to watch, but unfortunately it was one of many horrible actions of this war. I think it was very brave to show it!

Not a fan of the graphic violence or Murtagh
happysmileyface25 February 2020
I'm giving this episode 5 stars for the parts with Claire. They were interesting and new. What happened to Murtagh?! It's hard to like or feel sympathy for someone involved in torturing and killing. He used to be one of my favorites.

About the graphic violence... My complaint is not that there was violence in this episode but that there was soooo much of it and it was so graphic. From the opening scene until the end. It doesn't matter that there were graphic scenes in season 1 or that there was and is violence in the world, as others have argued. I'm still bothered by it. It makes the show unenjoyable. Outlander can be good without filling episodes with brutality.

The show is still good, but I feel like they need something fresh to happen. It is just the same old same old every week.

Variety of Storylines
marlainadrummond27 February 2020
While this wasn't one of my favorite episodes, I rated it a 10 because it was probably necessary in building for future episodes. Plenty of entertainment value. Jamie Fraser never disappoints and this episode was no exception. Marsali is delightful!

Claire

If that is the way all 5 season will go...I am released from a spell of Outlander. Claire's story is only one that is interesting. She is inspiring!

Crudely Violent - Rehash - Thuggery
vintagegeek24 February 2020
There is no entertainment value in this 2nd episode of season 5. It starts with crude violence, ands with even more horrific actions. They're rehashing old debates and characters we've already hated and thought long gone from prior seasons. There's almost no moving forward. The only charming scene dealt with Marsali and Claire. The rest is blah, blah, blah by Roger or/and Jamie. The show needs exciting new powerful characters. We're tired of all the thuggery. Plus, are they going to chase Murtaugh for the whole season?

Outstanding episode.
laddonia7627 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Yes, this episode had some fairly graphic violence. War is violent and the Revolution and its beginnings were as well. There were no weapons of mass destruction, which can kill and maim from afar; the fight was up close and personal. I did not find this offensive, but rather a depiction of the times. Once again, the acting was stellar. Sam's ability to speak volumes without saying a word shows a masterful grasp of his craft. Catrioina has this ability as well, as evidenced by the scene with Marsali butchering the deer carcass. Well done by all. Outlander is the best show on TV.

Very Bloody and I love it.

This episode was amazing from start to finish. The tensions were heightened to a dangerous level, the action is getting more gritty and the cinematography is beautiful.

With all the research, no one thought to check that the hymn Abide with Me wasn't composed until the 1860's???

Violent. Bloody. Disgusting.
JillsBis23 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Most of the scenes in this episode contained violence and/or bloody bodies. What was the point of the repeated close-up shots of the bloody corpse that Claire had autopsied? And the burned and bloody chest of the man who had been tarred and feathered. Do they think the audience is not intelligent enough to understand what happened so they must show it up close over and over again? Then there was the animal being sliced up by Marsali, Stephen Bonnet's gruesome fight, the stabbing of the Scot, women punching and kicking each other, etc. I fast forwarded through much of the episode. I can handle some violence and blood, but this was excessive and seemed to be there for shock value.

I don't know what writers of the show have in their mind but after S3 Claire gets more stupider in every episode

BORING!!!

Warning: Spoilers
FF a lot.

The Bonnet part is for keep on the drama ongoing. The never dead bad man is a long used gadget and it is already tiring.

My review is too short?? Well what can I do but rambling.
