I'm not crazy
nogodnomasters11 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Aubrey (Barrington De La Roche ) is bed ridden in the attic on a magical oxygen bottle that never needs to be changed. He is abandoned by his care takers because he is creepy. His daughter (Tessa Wood ) and grandson (David Lenik) care for him. It is clear the place is haunted.

The film has some jump scares and a decent creep factor. Aubrey was a bit cliche. The grandson lacked personality and was boring. Tessa Wood clearly overacted her poorly written role.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

Not bad, Better than expected

An English Haunting is a decent film. It is spooky. Well acted, sort of, not bad. The settings were nice. There is even a creepy old guy. Nice little twist towards the end. Like I said, not bad

Still better than most horror out of Hollywood
mister_bateman12 April 2020
First of all I'd like to say that I am not at all a horror movie fan. 99% of them are tedious, trope-ridden, vulgar garbage with zero creativitiy and imagination. Another commonality is that they start out somewhat okay but then totally go off the rails in the second half. Anyway, I was intrigued by the trailer of An English Hauting, the setting mostly. But since trailers have a habit of misleading you to think the movie is awesome, when in fact it's the opposite, I didn't expect much. Perhaps that is why I wasn't completely disappointed. By horror film standards I didn't find it that bad. It's a bit more subtle and refined than the typical in-your-face trash from Hollywood. Nothing you haven't seen before though. It did seem like a bit of a knock-off of "The Living and the Dead (2006)" in some aspects. Which I would recommend you rather watch instead. That was actually some decent horror.

Mostly boring

Warning: Spoilers
Some aspects of the story were okay and the acting was pretty good. However, even at only a 90 minute run time, the movie seemed to drag on slowly. Some parts made me chuckle at how goofy they were, but I wouldn't even recommend this movie as a 'so bad it's funny' type of film. All in all, I'd say it would serve as decent background noise.

SPOILERS; Nearing the climax of the movie, the main antagonist is revealed to be the elderly woman introduced early on. The first person she attacked; she snuck up on with a sledge hammer and so it was understandable. However, she then goes on to "chase" down the (20+ year old) young man. Never once does the man try to defend himself. That was bad enough, but then the old lady begins to drag this man with one arm by his hair.

It was already difficult to perceive this old woman as a threat, but it became comical when she targeted the young man. If the man was maybe 10 years younger, it could maybe pass as believable. But alas, the young man didn't fight back in any way and instead allowed the old woman to do whatever she wanted. It looked goofy and took me out of the climax of the movie.

So so bad.

Oh my goodness!

Ok they did get use of a huge quaint English country house. That must've been due to the producers being lord and lady what's name.

Acting is so dire it's just painful. The script is awful dialogue is completely unnatural. Special effects are cheap and they look it. Photography is good though. Music is OK. Going for an old Hammer vibe. But the story is just stupid and everything is held together so flimsily that it just makes one big messy tangled laugh out loud snooze fest.

I am normally very happy to support indies. Love low Budget and can cope with multiple gaffs and budget restraints, I can see past all that but there is a line and this is way over it.

Too many stupidities and plot errors to make it even faintly believable, and just too much crappy acting. I just lost interest about half way and caught the little twist at the end which was way too little too late.

Sorry. Not for me.

Avoid.

Don't bother

Imagine the village of Little Snoring's amateur dramatic society had a whip-round and raised £500 to make their own movie. This is the result.

Pretty awful
lukeen-567-32629815 August 2020
Interesting premise and a couple of good scares but the two leads are appalling; terrible, camp acting and they come across as so insufferable that the film was a chore. Also, I'm not buying the high reviews here - seems that these have been bought and those who have given it a rightfully low score are being marked down by others. Incredibly suspect...

Not great but not horrible
hiei22919 June 2021
I truly don't get the 1 star reviews of this movie. The acting wasn't great but it wasn't that bad. I especially love the one guys review who says he turned off the movie due to some mistake with a cigarette. Delusional.

That being said this movie is pretty cliched. You'll see the ending from a mile away once you figure out what is going on. Regardless, the cinematography was nice, acting was passable. Worth a watch if you are really into horror.

Starts well but then
xaocam-774809 April 2020
I would've given the first half of the movie 5-6 stars as it was written, directed and acted to at least that level and for a low budget movie I was feeling quite pleased that I gave it a shot, but then the second half of the movie, OMG, what happened? It just descended into absolute crap - I need someone to explain it to me

Surprisingly good. You can't beat a British ghost story. No information on where the house actually is so did some research of my own. I noticed that the Associate Producers of the film are Sir John and Lady Shuckburgh. A search reveals that it was filmed at the Shuckburgh Country House near Little Shuckburgh in Warwickshire. I hope that this is of interest to you all!

I actually like the film. Why is the overall score around 3 out of 10?
the12elton10 May 2020
I saw this movie and I actually like the film. The color grading picture is perfect. The script is interesting. Acting is good, not bad. The only thing that I dont like about the film is the sound effects. The sound effects sound bad and cheap which kinda ruins the film a little bit. Overall this is actually pretty watchable.

Who casted this junk?
cin_janssens16 October 2020
It actually wasn't SO terrible until they have this like 30 yrold guy getting pushed around by an old lady and crying for his mommy? Like... wtf? If he was a 12 year old kid it would have been better. It just didn't make sense. Also did anyone notice his hand wasn't injured in the end after she cut it? Ugh It just must have been so embarrassing for this actor. I was embarrassed watching it

Utter crap - spoilers, you're welcome

Warning: Spoilers
I don't enjoy writing negative reviews, but I didn't enjoy this film either, so I guess that makes us even.

The acting was appalling by all but the main lad who played Blake, who wasn't too bad. The score was so bad it was painful, the audio levels were so unbalanced and the sound effects were surely made by a 5 year old who has never heard a fire in their life, which is probably a good thing, but not for this film.

Every step of the film was predictable, it was just a hash of every bad horror film that ended in a way that made you feel embarrassed on behalf of the writer.

The location was nice enough, bit of overkill with the cobwebs maybe in an attempt to make the house look aged, but I'm sure it's a nice house. I heard a great line the other day, if you're hungry for a horror film to stick your teeth into, have a slice of Swiss cheese on your sandwich, it would have less holes. It's as if multiple bad writers got together once every 10 years and spat some words onto some random scrap of paper during a meth orgy and then decided to stick it all together with glitter...something had to attract funding for this script, although, it was probably self funded. The most glaring gaping hole...the tape that Blake finds that has dear old grandpappy Aubrey narrating how he discovered this deformed child, states that he has decided to name him Jacob...then when we discover this kid's mum orchestrated the whole arrangement, she also calls him Jacob...so...did she just decide she liked the name? Had she spent all this kid's life calling him kid until Aubrey fed the poor lad and taught him to speak, chose him a name and then you're telling me she just decided she liked the new name he was given? The writer did remember that Aubrey chose this name right? Cos you would name your child, it doesn't matter what they look like, you still love your child, so you still choose them a name, you don't wait 12 years until some semi naked hippie loner starts showing an unhealthy interest in your son and then say, hey that dude called him Jacob, I'll try that next time I call him up from his filthy little basement prison.

It is so so bad....
baldy_man8 April 2020
Awful in every way a movie could be awful. Rubbish acting, special effects, make-up the whole thing is horrendous. Save yourself the misery of watching it. Even whilst self isolating due to Covid 19 I'd still rather stare at the wall than watch more movies like this...

Watch the first 3/4 then create your own ending
Bstahls8722 October 2021
Really. This movie had so much promise. Then the climax hit. It's almost like the writers gave up half way through. The actors gave up right at the same time as well. It's bizarre what a 180° turn this movie made half way through to become a piece of crap.

Leeza113 August 2021
I am a massive lover of horror/scary films, I've seen loads, it's all I watch but this is by far one of the worst! Rubbish acting, rubbish storyline, rubbish special effects. If you want to waste 1.30 of your time, go ahead... It time I will never get back! Lovely location though.... Lol.

A classic style horror which is an easy watch for mainstream audiences.
horrorgirlyfilm29 April 2020
Blake (David Lenik) and his alcoholic mother Margot (Tessa Wood) are forced to move into the mysterious Clemonte Hall, a vast isolated manor house, to care for his dying Grandfather, Aubrey (Barrington De La Roche) who resides in the attic room. Soon, ghostly goings-on fill the house with dread, as it becomes apparent Audrey's illness may have a supernatural cause.

An English Haunting was enjoyable and I imagine will be popular amongst a more mainstream audience looking for a classical approach to horror.

The location and cinematography are stunning and whilst the blurb states it is set in the 1960's - the film has a distinctly timeless feel to it. The film is well paced and both the story and each of the characters follow distinctive arcs. As a writer and reviewer, my biggest bugbear is poorly written characters. I am always going to champion a film that has believable characters brought to life by strong performances from the cast. Take Margot, who is resentful of reprising her role as her fathers carer due to their previously tumultuous relationship. It is a believable contrast to Blake whose loyalties are torn in several directions.

As the story unfolds, we are shown glimpses of a grotesque human-like monster on and Aubrey's involvement in its origins. In a subversive take on the feminine Gothic archetype - An English Haunting has us explore relationships between mother and son. Leading to a plot twist that was a genuine surprise. My only criticism was the portrayal of the three kings purely because I felt they did not contribute to the suspense of the film.

Audiences may be divided on An English Haunting. Genre audiences generally enjoy using their imagination - whilst mainstream audiences tend to expect all nuances to be made obvious for easier enjoyment.

Ehh...
nlk874 September 2023
So after reading some of the other reviews, I seem to fall in between the good & bad reviews. Is this "B" good..? No. Is it terrible? No. Would I recommend this movie to a friend, highly doubt it. Will I ever re-watch this movie again? Perhaps many years from now. I've seen box office hits that's worse than this film. It starts out boring & then the last 40 minutes it starts explaining things. The point of this movie kinda reminded me of the movie, "Skelton Key." & maybe a little bit of the "B" movie, "Jessabelle." & the very last scene, I totally guessed what really happened cause it reminded me of the "Skelton Key."

I thoroughly enjoyed it.
rocknrelics3 July 2020
I thought this was beautifully shot, had an excellent score and the acting was decent.

I didn't find it slow in the slightest, a wonderful atmosphere was built up from the start, and the house really added to the atmosphere.

The budgetary constraints were only obvious on a couple of occasions, some effect had been added and it really showed it was shot on video on my TV.

Overall though an excellent haunted house film, and one I'll certainly watch again, it held my attention throughout.

A quirky little tale
peteratskegness11 February 2021
Despite negative reviews, I watched this with an open mind and am rather glad I did. Ok, maybe there are no Oscar Winning performances here, but there is still a lot to enjoy. The camera work and lighting are very good - equivalent and, at times, better than you would see in a film with a big budget. There's a few unintended comicical bits with special effects and costumes, but taking all into account, still worth watching.

"We three kings of ..."
reevesvic1 November 2020
A truly awful movie. Bad script and bad acting should make this film a total waste of time. Except...

1) It's really quite amusing. I'm sure the filmmakers never intended this, but it's so bad it's pretty good. The Three Kings stood out in this context. They were as frightening as The Three Stooges and just made me titter instead of quiver. They give evil a bad rep.

2) The camerawork wasn't too bad.

3) I watched it for free on Amazon Prime. If I'd paid for this I'd be angry. Angrier than The Three Kings (which isn't saying much).

Nice settings and that's about it. Slow and boring, nothing interesting or spooky going on. Lame effects. I just watched 30 min or so and I had enough.
