An American Crime (2007)
A shame
This film was about a crime that stunned me.
This was a crime that led me to read the court transcripts.
This film was well acted.
This film gave "Paula" and "Ricky" a pass.
Shame
The Clovehitch Killer (2018)
BTK anybody?
This film is one great big blatant reference to the BTK killer (Dennis Rader) and is pretty good. It's only really let down by the ending, which stretches belief beyond breaking point in order to come up with a reasonably happy outcome. Other than that I'd highly recommend it, even if you know about the BTK crimes.
An English Haunting (2020)
"We three kings of ..."
A truly awful movie. Bad script and bad acting should make this film a total waste of time. Except...
1) It's really quite amusing. I'm sure the filmmakers never intended this, but it's so bad it's pretty good. The Three Kings stood out in this context. They were as frightening as The Three Stooges and just made me titter instead of quiver. They give evil a bad rep.
2) The camerawork wasn't too bad.
3) I watched it for free on Amazon Prime. If I'd paid for this I'd be angry. Angrier than The Three Kings (which isn't saying much).
1917 (2019)
Reality anyone?
I'm old enough to remember a student poster that was rather trendy when I wasn't old enough to be a university student. It featured a soldier in the process of dying with a huge "Why?" plastered across the top of it.
Why do the rear lines seem to exist mere metres behind the front lines?
Why would a couple of lowly lance corporals be trusted to save 1600 men?
Why is there virtually no artillery (the biggest killer and maimer in WWI) in this film?
Why do we have random individual Indian and black soldiers chucked into units without explanation?
Why is there so much greenery on the frontline?
Why is this film rated so highly?
Looks very nice, though. I suppose that's all that matters these days. Extra star for the prettiness.
Urban Legends (2007)
The actors give it away
The idea for the show is pretty good - guess the true tale from the false one. However, the format uses eye witness interviews as well as dramatisations for each story and therein lies the problem. The ones that are false are easy to guess because the eye witnesses stand out a mile as actors. If the show used the approach of "Fact or Fiction" (a very similar programme) it'd be far more difficult to work out what's what because you just get the dramatisations to work with.
The "Mini Myth" segments are the highlights. Not only are they told using comical graphics, they're also harder to guess - unlike the main stories.

Black humour with intelligence
I loved this film. I have a rather dark sense of humour and this hit the spot for me. As it cuts from perspective to perspective it gives you a sense of a Pulp Fictiony deja vu and, like Pulp Fiction, it all comes together to make for a complete, if rather unlikely, explanation of the madness.
A great watch.
PS Lesson most worth learning: never urinate out of a moving vehicle. You have been warned.
Copycat Killers (2016)
Not too bad
I'm rather baffled at the two 1 star written reviews of this show. Have they actually watched it?
Every episode I've seen has used the real names and they often show CCTV and photo images of the criminals and victims. Granted, the dramatizations are a little weak (especially the ones depicting British crimes), but it's factually accurate.
Despite his unlikely name and slightly eerie appearance, Dr. J. Buzz Von Ornsteiner is the stand out talking head, often offering some interesting psychological insights into the "why" element of the offence. Not fantastic, but definitely worth watching if you like real crime.
Nebel im August (2016)
Heartfelt depiction of a relatively unknown Nazi atrocity
Firstly, I'd like to give my interpretation of what the title "Fog in August" means, since a previous reviewer was rather baffled at the title. The "fog" (nebel) was the deception employed by the administration when continuing the T4 (euthanasia) programme even though it had "officially" been abandoned by the Nazis. The "August" is the summer - the season that the film was obviously set in.
The two nurses are worthy of a mention here because they defy the stereotype: one, the hatchet-faced Catholic dogmatist is the true humanitarian. The other, an attractive, sweet talking and easy-going blue eyed young woman, is the reliable child killer, using raspberry juice to keep the lethal dose of barbiturate down. On the other hand, the medical director is a man who seems determined to see his projects through with efficiency no matter what the cost - the epitome of a Nazi stooge stereotype (but a well defined and well acted one).
The children were portrayed brilliantly. There are touching and realistic moments here that don't descend into sentimentality and help you to empathize with the victims rather than merely sympathize.
This film is difficult to watch but it has to be, because it's portraying an event in history many people would rather not contemplate. An event that occurred at a time when many people went mad in the wake of recession and populist extremism. It's a warning from history put into film. And it's a well acted and considered warning at that.
Rosa Leigh (2018)
Good grief
This film sucks. Acting: terrible, scripting: terrible, historic detail: terrible, "fear factor": terrible. There's absolutely nothing good or even mediocre about this movie at all. Even the sound is bad - it veers from high to low volume in a seemingly random manner but may, in fact, be the director's attempt at creating some kind of an "audio atmosphere".
If you're a film student and want to learn how a film should NOT be made, watch this. If you're a masochist who'd love to waste 72 minutes of their life, watch this.
