I always try to keep my reviews as unbiased as possible, but as a superfan of this show I am unfortunately going to have to break my rule for this review. After watching this masterpiece I couldn't help myself... so I apologize in advance for the sappy novel you are about to read.
Yes there are many episodes to choose from that you could argue are the best. Personally, nothing will ever touch episode 4x15, Self Control, but this episode is a very close second.
I know a common occurrence amongst fans that review this show is saying " it just keeps getting better and better." Which is certainly the case. Since episode 1X17 this has been one of the most underrated and engaging Tv shows on the air. The writing and the characters just keep getting better... But we have reached a point where it is starting to get unfair how good this show is.
This show, more than any show I've ever watched, has always had the incredible ability to land the funniest comedy, the most suspenseful drama, and also some of the most emotional scenes in the span of 40 minutes. And this episode just may have executed all of those things perfectly. As a whole, this episode completely showcases what Agents of Shield is about and I couldn't have been more entertained.
Ya the "groundhog day" trope has been done many times, but I am amazed with the creative spin and the tone and pace the writers created for this episode .First of all the comedy. Daisy and Coulson have always been my favourite duo. And this had some of the funniest moments of any episode. Clark and Chloe's acting was some of the best its ever been, comedically, but also dramatically. I am glad they got to spend a lot of time together this episode... they haven't had as many scenes together as I'd like for the final season, but this episode alone made up for it. After all, this show has always been centred around the two of them.
The acting has always been what separated this show from the rest of its superhero show competitors. Clark Gregg and Chloe Bennet are obviously the stars of this episode but holy cow Elizabeth Henstridge is a rare talent. Not only did she direct one of the greatest episodes of the show as her directorial debut, but the scene where she has the implant taken out and remember where Fitz's location is some of the most impressive acting I have ever seen.
And last but not least the Enoch scene. One of the most heartbreaking scenes of the series. Joel Stoffer has played the role of Enoch impeccably, and his last scene here capped it all off. The dialogue between him and Coulson and Daisy had me wrecked, and the way the writers intertwined the shows main theme of family and the different views on death were just beautifully executed. Goes back to Coulson's speech to Sibyl in 7x06, after she mentioned choricoms cannot die ... Enoch had "all the good human stuff" he had sacrificed himself twice now. Genius storytelling.
Every TV show has a scene in its final season where you think to yourself "oh no we are finally coming to the end". You never want to think that, especially if you are a fan of these characters as much as I am. We got scenes like that in season 5 when they thought it would be the final season and they executed it perfectly... but we were blessed with two more years of adventures. When Enoch says to Daisy, "this is your last mission together" it finally sunk in. This show is ending in three weeks, and this amazing episode made me appreciate once again how lucky I am to have experienced it.
