The Price of Fame is... Reliving an old 'Night Gallery' Episode
Gislef5 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Although many people have compared the episode to season 1's "The Comedian", the episode owes an debt to the "Night Gallery" episode 'Make Me Laugh'. In which a comedian who can't get a laugh makes a wish and an inept miracle worker grants it. Except everyone laughs no matter what the comedian says, and eventually the comedian gets tired of his "success" and asks for another miracle which backfires, killing him.

The two new Twilight Zone episodes have both spun off that, but tried to impart a bigger message to a 15-minute episode which only had one thing to say ("Be careful what you wish for") which is the basis of all "make a wish" stories" since "The Monkey Paw". 'Ovation' doesn't add anything to it, and is basically shorter and less themeless than last year's 'The Comedian'.

Tell me if you've heard this before. An aspiring singer gets a coin from a pop star, Fiji, who then kills herself. No matter how badly the singer performs, or how implausible the circumstances of people applauding her, she gets applause. Unceasing and unearned applause. The singer, Jasmine, eventually gets tired of it. She has a sibling who is jealous of her, takes the coin, and gets the applause. But the sister, Tara, is immune to the coin's spell, and later Jasmine is immune to it as well. Not to mention Jasmine is immune to the spell initially when Fiji gives her the coin. And why does Fiji give her the coin if she considers its "blessing" a curse?

I don't necessarily need an explanation for all this. But a) the script requires it by gaslighting the issues, b) you've got nothing else to do but think about these issues while the story plods along, and c) we had the same unexplained ability thing in "The Who of You" last episode.

The jealous sister bit gives the episode a bit of a spin and a vaguely twisty ending. But the plot still boils down to "Be careful what you wish for", and the changes to the format don't really change the plot enough to make it interesting. There are a few decent scenes, like a hospital bit where the surgeons and even a patient being operated on applaud Jasmine. But the story doesn't go anywhere.

Also maybe this story just doesn't work in this day and age. It comes across more as some well-paid actors and producers lamenting "Oh, woe is me: I've got all this fame and fortune that it too much for my poor little soul." Serling pulled that off with "Make Me Laugh", in part thanks to Geoffrey Cambridge as the down-and-out comedian and in part because Serling never seemed to have a lot of fame and fortune despite his talent and famous name. And also just because Serling was that good a writer. With 'The Comedian', and now 'Ovation', the writers not so much.

Maybe Serling was a guy who had lots of money, and he dived into his vault full of it Scrooge McDuck-style. Or maybe it's just his on-screen persona that conveyed an image of him as an unassuming guy. But Serling seemed like the kind of the guy who stumbled into fame and/or worked hard for it. Unlike the writers and producers of the new show, who have been doing their jobs for years. I'm sure they worked for it, but it doesn't come across as "earned" the way Serling's work did.

It also doesn't help that at the end, Jasmine goes nuts. She doesn't seem like she was too stable in the first place. The screaming, wild guitar playing, and her ultimate killing someone she thinks she doesn't know, doesn't help. It doesn't seem like she was too tightly wound in the first place.

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. What do you think?

Could have been better

It was a good episode, I like the idea behind it, just felt it could have been more engaging. Wasn't as good as episodes 1 and 3. Twist at the end was obvious.

Not great, not bad, it lies between the pit of the show's worst episodes and the summit of its greatest ones.

Disappointing

Warning: Spoilers
Sorry but this has been done before, and much better at that.

As a retelling of the old "cursed with miserable fame and fortune by magical gizmo" it hits all the clichés, but also has horrible internal consistency and absolutely no logical sense.

Examples of this include, but are not limited to: Several people (bodyguards, the sister, Jasmine herself before and after owning the coin, etc) are immune to the "ovation-curse" with no reason given. After surrendering the coin, Jasmine is still famous enough to have a "where did she go?"-article written about her in a gossip rag. So why then, if she missed the spotlight so badly, didn't she just transition from magical super-fame to "regular fame", instead of not showering and dressing like a hobo? She isolated herself in a cabin- with her phone. You'd think, at some point, her dad would contact her and say "hey, your sister is superfamous now too! How 'bout that?"

And so on and so forth. The episode makes no sense.

Hasn't this been done before?
klperkins0726 June 2020
I'm pretty sure this is very similar to the Comedian episode of the first season. Famous comedian/ musician magically empowers a lesser known/ struggling artist who becomes instantly famous, but of course, at a cost. Even the way the audience reacts is kind of similar to the first episode of season 1. I guess maybe they wanted to redo the idea with a fresh approach to execute the premise better. Still a decent episode, but seems recycled.

I wish there was more character development of the first girl Fiji to understand her motivation, pain/ suffering or whatever and more background on the Jasmine girl before jumping right into the mystical aspect of it and dragging out the episode. Dialogue could use some work too. I am really rooting for the show and have been bingeing it the last two days. This season seems to have a better grasp on the Thriller/ SciFi aspect of things.

Back to disappointingly underbaked for the fourth episode of the second season of "Twilight Zone".

Jasmine Delancey (Jurnee Smollett) is a busker and struggling musician who life is changed when Fiji (Sky Ferreira), the most popular performing artist of the moment hands her a gold coin, before walking out into traffic. After performing at an impromptu memorial, Jasmine lands a gig on a TV talent show that catapults her to superstardom. Though this puts an immediate strain on her relationship with her sister Zara (Tawny Newsome) it's not until the crowds are stalking her every movement, and the standing ovations come regardless of how good she is, that Jasmine begins to question the validity of this fame.

It's not the worst premise for a "Twilight Zone", in fact we've looked at unearned fame at personal cost before - nor is it badly performed, Jurnee Smollet was one of the stars of 2020, Newsome is a good comic performer and there are smaller roles for Paul F. Tompkins and Thomas Lennon. The problem with the episode, again, is that it's a 'premise' and not a 'story'. We don't see her for long enough, or her career go high enough, for Jasmine to plausibly accept that the coin is behind it. She wins the relatively crappy looking music contest and that's about it from what we see. She far too quickly becomes a reclusive artist at the "Evil Dead" shack before immediately suffering a psychotic break and wreaking revenge on her replacement. It's all too quick and unearned by the story. The twist in that ending too is one that you'll see coming from miles away too and when you think about it with any depth, doesn't really make sense.

Another disappointing entry in a series that overall is sinking from patchy to poor.

The Beatles did it
littlesatanhooves26 June 2020
Actually there is a practical solution to Jasmine's dilemma. Many artists have done that, including The Beatles and Steely Dan. Don't perform live or make TV and radio appearances. Just record all your stuff in the privacy of your studio. No need for fancy engineering and production because people will love your stuff no matter how you sound.

Where was the twist? This was just a mess. And it didn't make sense because that piece of bronze did not cause the original big name singer to have surgeons start clapping while around her.

The episode was solid. Not horrible, not the best, but I liked it. Once things started to unravel in the end, you could pretty easily see where it was going.

How did this garbage get past the QC department
gareth-7544228 June 2020
OK so I suppose I could be classed as a pretty harsh critic but I do do my best not to be, having said that I really really hated this episode, probably the dumbest episode so far of this season, I imagine the original story written by David Weil was interesting but the resulting teleplay by Emily Chang & Sara Amini seems to be nothing more than a vehicle for Jurnee Smollett to impress with her wide range of acting skills, of which I found to be unimpressive & thoroughly annoying, I found myself skipping thru this episode. An unimpressive pile of bunk to put it kindly.

Strange tale that twist with a magical coin and it involves a sibling.
blanbrn2 July 2020
This "TZ" episode called "Ovation" is one that's strange and a fantasy like tale that twist as after success at the end things turn out to be a big cost. It involves Jasmine("Birds of Prey's" Jurnee Smollett) a young and sexy struggling want to be music singer who all of a sudden one day has her whole life changed after seeing a tragic accident of a famous singer. It's upon this happening and obtaining a coin that talent and success and being loved by others has all came to Jasmine. It's like she just can't get enough fame! Only things twist and turn for the downside in this tale as one can take as a cautionary tale of morals and reality. Plus an odd and painful twist involves Jasmine's sister Zara(Tawny Newsome). Overall pretty good well done episode.

"These people love you."
classicsoncall30 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The price of fame and celebrity is explored in this episode with mixed results. With the constant bickering between Jasmine Delancey (Jurnee Smollett) and her sister Zara (Tawny Newsome), the story almost begged for the resolution we got at the finale. Going into seclusion for what appeared to be undeserved praise and acclamation for a mediocre talent at best, Jasmine entered a forced seclusion to mull her predicament. Eventually though, the rise of another singing phenomenon got the best of her, and she decided that this newest celebrity deserved to be taken down a peg. I didn't think stabbing the most recent flavor of the month was even close to being warranted, nor was the mystery of the magical coin explored enough to merit credibility. And how would Jasmine not have recognized her sister in all the pop magazines celebrating her fame?

Unearned applause - much like season 1 of this reboot
imdb-2021220 April 2021
While watching this episode, I realized that the writers of season 1 must have had some flash of realization regarding any positive reviews of season 1 episodes.

So they took that moment of clarity and wrote this episode, exploring that notion of unearned applause and appreciation. Well, good on them.

Season 2 is faring much better than season 1, and maybe part of that was an acknowledgment that merely reciting wokey tropes wasn't actually "storytelling", so they went another direction. Like, "hey, how about if we wrote some good episodes for a change?"

Whatever it was, I'd say "keep it up" but then they decided against doing season 3. Oh well. Can't say they'll be missed.

Warning: Spoilers
And apparently that was the same issue the creators of this episode had ... As well as not knowing when to stop or what to do in the middle.

Not only was this episode just an unnecessarily retold "The Price of Fame" story ... The "twist", if you can even call it that, was lame and contradictory to the character development the show establishes before the twist.

And why did ahe need to go into hiding after getting rid of the coin if it was just the coin that gave her fame ... Wouldn't getting rid of it negate the need for hiding or wouldn't hiding negate the need to get rid of the coin ... Make up your mind show or better yet just don't do that show anymore 👍

It's like people are missing the point of these episodes
italianpride1718 July 2021
I'm a huge fan of the Original Series and I don't understand the people who just refuse to give this show any credit. Stop being so narrow minded and blinded by nostalgia.

The message of this episode is not about the two sisters or fame it's about society and people's obsessions with celebrities and how ridiculous it's become.

Rating things low because you don't grasp them is insane.

They want us to clap like sheeps too
Crystal_Dive8 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
So , Jordan Peele probably thought that we would applause every episode that has been released, just because of his activism.

Well, he's certainly not holding the cursed coin here.

This episode is about a singer whom obtained a MacGuffin with a Wishmaster-ish twist, that makes everyone applauds her. In this sort of situation, there should be a genuine talent that has been robbed of the opportunity because of this relic, and a comeuppance at the end.

But there is none in this episode. Even the rules of the blessing/curse is inconsistent in this short episode. Couldn't even squeeze in a rumination on the manufactured success of the music industry in the real world. (the Black Mirror humorous teen-romp episode with Miley Cyrus did it much better on that regard)

Disappointing
matthew-4293022 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
First off i want to say that i am in no right an official or recognized media critic. On the other hand i have watched multiple series similar to this (Black Mirror, Original Twilight Zone) and in general a big fan of the genre. However, most of these Twilight Zone episodes fall short for me. Ive watched all the episodes up to this point with the second half of season two unwatched. Most of these episodes start off with a semi interesting plot, some of them a little overused in my opinion, much like this episode. I thought the appeal of the original Twilight Zone is that they were unpredictable and mystifying, often times weaving in social commentary but not making it the focal point of the show. This remake is just underwhelming.

To get into specifics with this episode, the beginning starts off decent. We see a budding but unhappy superstar filled with people in her life that dont care about her personally but lust for her presence due to her fame. Simple concept that does share a lot of similarities with current day media and the stars that are idolized to the point of obsession. Then we get to see her casually stroll upon a park to an unknown artist trying to make spare change in an attempt to grow their singing career. Here is where my problems arise, when we see her give the coin and see her step in front of the bus it is surprising. However, immediately it pans to coin and we already know what the whole episode is going to be from the first 5 minutes. Unknown artist gets charm from ridiculously famous person, that charm gives them unnatural attention even though they arent anything to write about. Fame gets to the girls head and begins to enjoy the attention she never got. Attention goes too far and she wants out. When she handed her sister the charm to "throw" we dont see her throw it or hear a splash. Which Jasmine would have if she was standing right next to her by the way. Then we cut to about 10 minutes of buildup just to arrive at the ending that im sure about 90% of the viewers figured out would happen halfway into the episode.

Its really just annoying that the plotlines have become so dumbed down and simplified in my belief to cater to the general audience instead of real fans of the genre. This episode and many others before it can be boiled down into a 10 minute youtube video that would probably be written better by an individual who has never been a part of tv production. Its like the producers set up a dart board of common social topics they want to reuse for the millionth time, throw and land on one and TRY to put a Twilight Zone spin on it. Its a shame because out of the 10+ episodes ive watched i think ive genuinely enjoyed three at most. Now you may ask why do i still watch? Im not sure at this point, maybe its the hopes that they will actually come through with an interesting story and not ruin it in the last half of the episode. Maybe is because i thought the stamp of Jordan Peele would bring better more interesting characters and development. Its a shame that Peele's name has to be on this thing, every other work he has done has been genius, I cant convince myself that he actually enjoys the show, i think he just gets paid enough by cbs to show up 3 mins an episode, add his narration and dip

To get the rating, Only reason i gave it a 3 is the overall cinematography and actors within the series are pretty good. Sadly most episodes get ruined by poor production choices and disappointing endings to otherwise alright TV. Thankfully im not paying for CBS all access to watch this show, just a thing on the side to make fun of.

Absolute tripe
rosethornton2 July 2022
Probably the most boring and pointless of the series. What's the point of it? To say that fame isn't what it's cracked up to be? That's it?

And the twist, one which is so obvious, is mundane as hell, it's presented like it's some big shock but I was still thinking "there's gotta be more than this" but nope it finishes up and that really is it. Could've passed as a short film, like 5 minutes short, all the content of this episode could easily be boiled down to that length of time.

I'd skip this one, literally nothing to redeem it. No good actors/acting, no disturbing scenes or sinister message or crazy irony. Gaaaarbage.

Loud Clapping Throughout
AlmaSoulAmor6 September 2020
The episode title is fair warning. If you dislike the sound of clapping, skip this episode. In my estimation, there was not enough payoff for sticking through to the end.

I can not tolerate loud, sustained, ecstatic clapping of an audience in any on-screen format. Thus, I watched this episode mostly on mute. If they removed the overused, drawn-out clapping scenes, I wonder how many minutes of show would remain. Are there other people that can not stand loud clapping on TV?

I am enjoying this anthology, and will keep watching for the duration, but this episode grated me from start to finish.
