Needed to be in a dystopian future
ravencorinncarluk11 December 2020
Only slightly sub-par, but pretty gory. Definitely has a few little holes and story parts that don't quite make sense. I mean, weapon-arms are neat, but why risk infection and weakness by doing it? Unless it were to replace limbs lost in the arena, and then I'd totally understand.

I liked the score, and some of the deaths were B-movie gruesome. The ending did put a smile on my face.

However, what this really needed was to be a couple decades into a post-apocalypse, or in some lawless strife-ridden foreign country. This scale of kidnapping and killing in America didn't quite work for me without there being some much deeper conspiracy.

New and improved(?)
kosmasp4 July 2021
Fight Club was volantary .. this isn't really that kind of deal. I've seen another movie where women where held prisoners and had to fight each other. They tweaked the concept here a bit, with a location and the ... extra parts it had free of charge if you want to call it that (no pun intended).

There will be people who will absolutely love this for the independent and low budget effort that it is. I couldn't really find too many things that would save this. I would not judge the people involved too much - either acting or whatever other department they did. Got to say though, the movie and the lighting of it all, look amazing. So maybe judge that. On the other hand, many are good in these departments nowadays and maybe you won't even care, because you don't get much out of the characters.

Kicking ... behinds from time to time, the action is important and it is done rather well ... but nothing to get too excited about either, considering other stuff I've seen. But considering the budget and time at hand, you might want to give it a break ... up to you it is.

The Ground Needs Blood
nogodnomasters20 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
MS. 45 is an all female hard rock band with some tough cookies. After they leave a gig and venue in shambles, their van gets run off the road. Eventually they have their right forearm removed and fitted to place on attachments which are various implements of destruction. They are placed in an arena where they must fight for their lives.

The film sets up Emma (Emily Alatalo ) to be the final girl. The blood games are part of a cult to put blood into the ground for crops? that are nowhere to be seen in the desert. The cult didn't make sense and generally there is a long recovery time once you get your arm cut off.

Guide: F-word. Brief sex and brief nudity.

If you came for a campy roadhouse you'll be disappointed
skitofit17 May 2021
This had potential but it was lost with the plot and poor acting. Maybe if your into b-borderline-c movies. You'll like it. But I was looking for a roadhouse 1970's gory horror, and was disappointed.

Meh
orgrabbit14 August 2021
Don't get me wrong, this movie is exactly what you think it is going to be, so there are no surprises. For what it is attempting to be, well... it is. It's a B movie with some good gags (f/x). There isn't anything new nor provocative. The acting isn't terrible and the direction isn't terrible either. The script is what it is. And I'd imagine that the movie did the script justice. If you haven't seen a lot of movies, you may just love this one! Read the movie's description. That's exactly what you'll get.

Disappointed
mathieu-n24 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I was not expecting anything but to be entertained for 1h30. I wanted some gory, fun action..I got bad acting and plot hole.

Something that really bothered me was the cheap-ass looking "spare parts". They are basically the main point of the movie, couldn't they make better than plastic weapons that the actresses clearly hold from inside a tube? I mean the gory death where not so bad (except the lame make up supposed to pass for a stabbing from a cheap plastic knife. Who stab someone in the clavic to kill them?)

It is what you expect it to be...
destroyerwod5 December 2021
I was kinda curious to watch this. Wasn't expecting too much as i knew it was a VOD low budget, and it turned out to be pretty much what i expected it to be. There is some entertainement in there, but it could had been lot better.

The concept of limb removal do not really make much sense as no one could be fighting right after that and how come a bunch of hillbillies end up having the medical competence to do this? I guess its one of those thing you need to suspend your disbelief and not care, wich is what i did.

Once around that how's the movie itself? Its alright... Fights could had been better but were not terrible either and some characters decisions/plot points didn't made sense, but i found some entertainement in it. I wasn't bored. But i did roll my eyes a few times at the nonsense so i can't really give it more than the half point mark of a 5.

A raunchy mess!
RockFromSpace17 September 2021
I came for the over the top violent combat, and Spare Parts was pretty good in that regard. If only every other part of the film wasn't a mess. It starts off strong, then quickly devolves into a heap of inconsistent/unbelievable characters, lame plot twists and kinda maybe revenge. Spare Parts is good for a few laughs and cringes at the sheer silly exaggeration of the film, but not much else.

The Maimed Place of Women in America
zardoz-1320 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Rarely do the aesthetics governing good movies apply to bad movies. Bad movies have their own array of rules. Bad movies attract us with their utter hokum. Sometimes, under the right conditions, the artifice of a bad movie can be beguiling. Far-fetched, kitschy, gore-soaked schlock like "Sweet Karma" director Andrew Thomas Hunt's preposterous gladiatorial grindhouse outing "Spare Parts," evokes memories of drive-in movies of yore. Mind you, little in this low-budget fighting femmes fracas is remotely realistic. Of course, plausibility would undermine such an outlandish premise. These predictable potboilers rely on material both audacious and salacious. Remember, Oscar-winning director Peter Jackson launched his cinematic career with outrageous raunch like "Bad Taste" (1987) "Meet the Feebles" (1989) and "Dead Alive" (1992) before he stunned audiences with his "Lord of the Rings" and "Hobbit" trilogies. Meantime, Hunt and "Colony" scenarist Svet Rouskov with David Murdoch have must ogled movies which objectified women, such as "Planet Terror" (2007), "The Machine Girl (2008), "Mad Max: Fury Road" (2015), "The Bad Batch" (2016), and "Kiss Kiss" (2019). Surprisingly, Hunt orchestrates his larger-than-life heroics with feminist ideology, while Rouskov & Murdoch skimp on details about the depraved Emperor and his patriarchy. The Emperor recites Roman gladiatorial chants with Biblical reverence. The premise that the Emperor could cover-up mortal combat in mainstream America strains credibility. Nobody could hush-up such a notorious enterprise, especially since people are maimed and killed. Although the characters are stereotypical, the cast enlivens them with their vivacity. Rather than ridicule itself like most spoofs, "Spare Parts" takes itself seriously and delivers a metaphorical tale about the trials and tribulations of women in America.

"Spare Parts" opens in a sprawling junkyard as a weary young woman, Lea (Kathryn Kohut), trundles a wheelbarrow up to a metal building. A hulking brute dumps a load of amputated arms into it. Director Andrew Thomas Hunt shifts from the image of severed limbs to an extreme close-up of a screeching singer, Amy (Michelle Argyris), in a ramshackle biker bar called The Rusty Chicken. Amy is the lead singer for Ms. 45, an all-girl punk rock band. A drunken biker, Earl (Kevan Kase of "Kick Ass 2"), storms the stage. Amy smashes Earl in the face with her elbow after he gropes her. Later, she hurls her microphone at this pathetic example of masculinity, so it that bounds off his face and back into her hands. Nevertheless, the irate biker refuses to back down. Abruptly, second singer & guitarist, Emma (Emily Alatalo of "Bounty Hunters"), boots Earl in his brovaries. Indeed, these dames adore a good donnybrook. Meantime, a riot has erupted in The Rusty Chicken, and the harried proprietor wields a shotgun to discourage it.

After the concert, Ms. 45's guitarist, Jill (Chelsea Muirhead), heralds news about her pregnancy via a sperm donor and celebrates with the group's lesbian drummer. During their on-stage brannigan, a lunatic skinhead, Sam (Jason Rouse), cheers the band's pugnacity. Later, Sam harasses them on the highway, recklessly ramming them with his Corvette. Ultimately, Sam forces them off the road. The band runs over a 'road gator,' a belt of spikes likely deployed by Sam, and they have a flat. The county sheriff (Lewis Hodgson of "Night Cries") arrives promptly with a wrecker and gives them a ride to the garage. Little do our heroines suspect the sheriff is in cahoots with Sam. Before these gals realize it, they have been gassed, and the Emperor's Doctor (Erin Noble of "Class of 1984") has amputated each's right forearm. When Amy awakens, she is aghast at the sight of her missing limb. Consoling the troubled girl with a smile, the Doctor explains, "You have been chosen to appease the gods."

After our heroines recover, they are garbed in sexy leather outfits and forced to 'fight or die.' Although their forearms are gone, they have been replaced with deadly metal prosthetic weapons. Now, each girl sports different armament, such as a hammer, an axe, or a machete, etc. The Emperor (Julian Richings of "Cube"), who presides over these savage matches, welcomes them to 'the Grid-iron,' and an excited crowd cheers as the gals await their first taste of combat. Before this clash commences, our heroines insist the Emperor exempt their pregnant cohort Jill from the fighting. The Emperor acquiesces gladly to their demands. Afterward, the dastard displays a small jar with Jill's tiny fetus. This staggering revelation epitomizes the Emperor's misogynistic mentality. Predictably, despite their lack of familiarity with their new weaponry, the girls carve up their first eight opponents. Predictably, Jill doesn't make the cut. Nevertheless, the Emperor congratulates the three survivors on their victory. Meanwhile, the Emperor's son Sam singles out Emma and treats her as his trophy queen. Comparably, Amy and Cassey (Kiriana Stanton of "H1-KA"), the lesbian drummer languish, under appalling conditions. This unfair treatment fuels the age-old rage between Emma and Amy. Ironically, Cassey discovers affection in the brawny arms of an African American strongman, Driller (Ryan Allen of "Get Rich or Die Tryin'"), who serves as their combat coach. Setting aside their rivalry, not only do Emma and Amy slaughter their adversaries before raucous crowds but they also secretly plot their inevitable revolt.

Authenticity can enhance credibility even in a second-rate movie. The recycling center, where the exteriors were lensed, makes a terrific locale for the Emperor's life & death gladiatorial tourneys. This real-life, grungy wasteland of crushed vehicles, scrap-iron, and tires galore conjures up a tangible sense of atmosphere and spectacle. Julian Richings revels in his role as the sadistic Emperor. Director Andrew Thomas Hunt rarely indulges in lame comic relief and treats everything with atypical sobriety, particularly the treacherous father & son relationship between the Emperor and Sam. After losing their forearms, these femmes refuse to grovel and turn adversity into victory. Not only does "Spare Parts" qualify as an indictment of patriarchy with its body modification narrative, but it also emerges as a feminist manifesto based on its' surprise ending.

Offhand, I can't think of a bigger disappointment
selfdestructo5 April 2023
WOW is this movie heavy on the downtime, with characters I could give two craps about. The second I saw the Fuse network was involved with this, my heart sank a little. And they totally lost me by the time the guy in the Corvette was trying to ram the girls' tour van off the road (No damage. It's a fiberglass car!). Some nonsense about the dirt in a junkyard that needs blood for crops. There's a cult leader who reveals himself to be a fraud. At its heart, this movie is about all the catty drama between four female bandmates. The action is pretty lackluster (and I saw a bunch of digital blood), with a few gore effects thrown in toward the end. I am the first one in line to see ass-kicking chicks in a movie, and Spare Parts offers very little in the way of thrills.

New Blood for the Horror Genre
hyperdermy30 August 2021
Spare Parts is a refreshing contribution to the horror film genre! He's not reinventing the genre, but it's a really well done piece of horror! Not cheap and the skills are well done too! Not bad.

I wasnt expecting much
patience-2155722 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
At first glance, I thought it was gonna be another rape culture piece and was about to shut it off until one girl wakes up on a bed and is told she is 'chosen'. The women in this weren't bad but with every horror flick, the victims always go through "why is this happening to me?!" Soon after being drugged and having limbs surgically removed and replaced with 'weapons', only one time does one say she planned to get the hell out whatever way she can. I suppose this is a refreshing look at it; the rest of them got into what was happening and even embraced training. To have some context on the history or the arena would have made that a more believable story. The part that really got me was the aborted pregnancy in a jar. All in all, the gore was about a B+, the relationship between the Emperors son and the brunette was odd at best, but I'd give it a solid A-. Maybe if they come out with a sequel, they left it open as a possibility, it might be worth a look.

Garbage
gianmarcoronconi17 January 2024
This is not a real review, it should be understood more as a collection of impressions on the film.

In this film there are some beautiful girls and a lot of violence in a place like a coliseum but in a landfill where the fighters have a weapon instead of a hand, so the plot of the film may seem stupid and even futile and look at it it's too worse than one might imagine, truly terrible and terrible rubbish that isn't even funny and with nothing truly beautiful to appeal to. In conclusion the film is complete rubbish and therefore its setting in a landfill is more than appropriate so the film can throw itself away.

A bit intense at certain point, but overall full of annoying overuse scene! Should have done better!
kwenchow23 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This film start with a woman taking away some removed human hands, and a woman singing with her band scene! As turnout, this film is about a bunch of punk band girls been removed limbs by the villain "The Emperor" to fight for survival! Entire film full of boring conversation, and annoying overuse scene! Such as, overuse of the blackout scene, overuse of the walking scene, overuse of the staring scene, overuse of the searching scene, overuse of the eating scene, overuse of the playing music instrument scene, overuse of the arguing scene, overuse of the calling names scene, overuse of the driving scene, overuse of the changing spare part scene, and overuse of the chanting scene! Make the film unwatchable! All the action scene quite bloody gore at certain point, but overall quite messy, portray by sideways, and occur in too short of time! Make the film frustrated to watch! At the end, The Emperor been killed! The men force to fight for their survival at the very end! That's it! Another disappointed film!

Ambitious and fun
LucasNorth27 January 2021
To be ambitious with your film in the small budget world of indie filmmaking is one thing, to actually succeed like Spare Parts has is something else entirely. Speaking to the talent of the cast and crew when this film has cool story, solid acting and some damn good fights. Great kills. Surprisingly good effects work. Jullian Richings being evil. What more could you want in a film?

Super Fun Genre Mash-Up
jt-3616526 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Saw this recently at a virtual film fest and it was hands down one of the more entertaining offerings - an action/horror/thriller mash-up. Best way to describe it is the Frankenstein love-child of Green Room, Mad Max: Fury Road and Turbo Kid.

After a bar clearing brawl an all-girl punk band gets kidnapped and drugged. They wake-up to find their arms have been replaced with weaponry and they're forced to fight gladiator style in an auto wrecking yard. The action sequences are fast-paced and furious, with the right amount of gore to add to the fun factor. But what really keeps you engaged are the performances from the girls which add an extra layer of depth to what could have otherwise been a rather superficial and one-dimensional gory affair. And of course it doesn't hurt to have Julian Richings as the lead villain - he chews up the screen every second he's on it.

It's a rambunctiously fun B-movie, with a lush punk-rock aesthetic, a killer score and its tongue firmly planted in cheek.
