Audaciously perfect
edfilmsuk27 July 2016
I consider myself a viewer who isn't always keen on so-called "artsy fartsy" TV shows and films, as they can sometimes feel pretentious. But in an episode creator Raphael Bob- Waksberg claimed Netflix were 'nervous' about, they needn't have worried.

Fish Out of Water is a masterpiece in TV animation; there is only brief dialogue in the beginning and the rest of it is silent but for the warbles of underwater speech and a distinctly different soundtrack than usual - ambient synths and smooth electronic timbres complement the beautiful, vibrant visuals of the underwater city.

The plot revolves around Bojack going to an underwater film festival in the Pacific Ocean representing Secretariat, but I won't say anymore- this episode needs to be watched and appreciated for its artistic value.

It may be the case that this episode, much like Breaking Bad's 'Fly', will divide fans of the show, but in my opinion at least, 'Fish out of Water' is a ingenious, unique amalgamation of Lost in Translation and the SpongeBob episode 'Rock Bottom' that coalesces to form an absolute masterpiece.

A truly original episode
saugoof22 November 2016
Coming up with something completely original is never easy, but this episode of BoJack Horseman is really unlike any other in the series or anything else I've seen for that matter, and it's brilliant! I won't dwell much on the specifics here because, had I read a description of it, I probably wouldn't have been interested in seeing it.

BoJack Horseman has always been a show where the creators have a lot of fun with the whole concept of a world where intelligent animals coexist with humans. This episode really makes the most of this environment as BoJack attends an underwater film festival where his movie "Secretariat" is being shown. The "Underwater Film Festival" naturally is in an underwater city in the pacific ocean and the underwater world is one aspect that really makes this episode special. There is so much going on in the background, it's even more impossible to get it all in on a first viewing than with other episodes. Little touches like cars driving on the left, alcohol patches, or how what seemed like an insignificant joke about the thumbs up gesture ends up hilarious by getting re-used in several different contexts.

The character of BoJack Horseman has really come into his own too. Initially through the first part of season 1 it seemed a bit like this was going to be yet another "I used to be famous" type of story, but the character has developed into so much more. This really shines through when he's attempting to return a lost baby and tries to make things right with Kelsey Jannings whom he got fired as director of Secretariat.

A truly beautiful episode that I had to watch again right away!

The Best Episode of the Third Season (so far)
borowiecsminus26 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Well, two episodes will go on to be even better, but if I was writing this review as I was seeing it, I would say that it's the best episode of the season so far. It's not as good as "Escape from L.A," frankly, very few things are, but it's as close as it gets.

They made an episode without dialogue, completely underwater, about Bojack finding a child and becoming a father figure before having to give him up, seeking forgiveness, and getting his priorities in order. And it worked.

It worked brilliantly. Bojack's guilt about Herb shines through beautifully as he tracks down a director whom he get fired. While promoting his movie, he essentially becomes a father, before essentially having to watch his child disappear before his eyes.

It's heartbreaking, and it switches the tone of the show from comedy to "well, it's hard to explain..."

One Of The Greatest Episodes Of Television In The 21st Century...
Sam_Ash_768 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
For others, it might be "Free Churro" or "Time's Arrow" and whilst those two episodes are masterpieces of television in there own rights, this one has stuck with me the most. This is a truly original episode of television, where almost no dialogue is used throughout it, and there is something so special about that. To have a story resonate with the audience when almost no dialogue is used... there is just something so special about that.

I absolutely love the animation throughout this episode, the underwater sections contain some of the most gorgeous animation seen in all of television. The final five minutes of it resonate the most with myself, and I'm sure, plenty of other viewers. "Kelsey, in this terrifying world, all we have are the connections that we make". This is the line that BoJack writes down towards the end, and its so perfectly written that its stuck out as one of the best quotes in all of this show.

The final twist, where BoJack finds out that he could've avoided all of this turmoil by using the voice function on his helmet is pure gold, and the song Sea of Dreams by Oberhofer playing at the very end is possibly one of the greatest song choices in the history of television. It is... perfection. Just like this episode.

Bojack Horsmen nailed it again !
KrazyJoke4 December 2017
Bojack Horsmen Netflix original had some really great highlights episode but 'Fish out of Water' is definitely their finest episode! This Netflix original Cartoon had some major problems with it's first season. But his season 2 was just so great and magical it kinda got the show back on track and with episode 4 (Fish out of Water) of season 3 we can get that this season is going in the exact directions has season 2.

In this episode we find Bojack Horsemen underwater the whole time. We experience a magical journey were our hero has no way of communication underwater. He struggles through depression and sadness. This is where we find as always our hero completely lost. This is where our hero finds himself with a baby seahorse. This genius episode makes us remember how great cartoon are. This episode has it all. It will forever be in my heart has how great we humans are able to still make great contain out of Tvshows. This episode is a definition of perfect. 'Fish out of Water' comes next to 'Rick and Morty' 'Ricklantis Mixup'

Thank You for reading my review (sorry if it contains mistakes i'm improving. And sorry if my English ain't perfect it ain't my main language) Have a good day!

Best animation episode i've ever seen
thomasruiter-2563619 November 2022
This episode is so well written and created. Its such an smart idea to create a whole world under water and make it kind of an silent episode. The music made it so intense and i didn't even miss the talking throughout the episode to be honest. You also get to see the good side of bojack for once with the baby fish part. The episode felt like 10 minutes long but it was almost half an hour. The ending was so good because if you watch te episode for an second time you will look different at the episode. I'm at season 3 episode 5 now and i wonder if i ever going to see a better episode of bojack then this one.

We can see Bojack's emotion without words. I truly like the interaction between Bojack and the seahorse baby. He has a kind heart. The ending remains the humour of this drama. This is really an amazing episode!

so good
ischefflerm28 December 2021
I usually never write reviews on here. I find it very tedious and i use letterboxd instead, but i just had to leave a review for this episode. It's one of the best - if not the best - episodes of a tv show i've ever had the pleasure of watching. The score and soundtrack are amazing; as bojack's usually are, but this one was truly a standout. What a beautiful episode.

Diving into the Depths of Isolation
ziancara12 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Fish Out of Water is a true standout episode from Bojack Horseman, and arguably one of the best episodes in the entire series. Set almost entirely underwater, the episode follows Bojack as he attends an underwater film festival, trying to find a way to connect with his audience despite the language barrier.

One of the most impressive aspects of the episode is its use of visuals and music. With almost no dialogue, the animators and music supervisors had to create a completely immersive experience for the audience, relying on the rich visuals of the underwater world and an evocative electronic score to convey emotion and meaning.

But beyond its technical achievements, Fish Out of Water is also a poignant exploration of loneliness, isolation, and the difficulties of communication. Bojack, already a lonely and flawed character, is forced to confront his own inability to connect with others, while the larger theme of isolation is explored through a series of vignettes involving other characters, all of whom are struggling to find their place in the world.

Overall, Fish Out of Water is a masterful episode of television, showcasing the unique strengths of the medium and the ability of Bojack Horseman to tackle complex themes in a visually stunning and emotionally resonant way. It's a true standout in an already impressive series, and a must-watch for any fan of animation or thoughtful, character-driven storytelling.

best episode of this show
knowledgeisdivine25 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I don't even think the Simpsons have ever come up with this type of episode. This one right here is just downright authentic it felt like I was watching one of those really short films in a theater before the actual film comes up. So to summarize it, it's basically Bojack going to this underwater city to attend this movie premiere but instead Bojack gets himself caught up in numerous adventures with this adorable sea horse baby. And this is the only non verbal episode of this series. This episode is going to sell like hot cakes when it's available to purchase on YouTube.

Not really a big fan of this show, but this episode is downright lovely to watch.

A very different episode...
swtnria4 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I can handle dark, cynical, depression related script very well, I actually enjoy it a lot, but this... I don't know... it was not my favorite, even though it appears to be many other's.

A non verbal episode. No speech, no real communication, no nothing. Just sign and body language and some weird, irritating sounds from the sea creatures' language. Thus (for me) boring.

To make matters worse everything takes place in an underwater city. This creates an intense claustrophobic feeling accompanied by a sentiment of complete solitude (due to lack of speech), which I found pretty unbearable. The episode had the atmosphere of a very bad nightmare. A suffocating nightmare.

On the bright side Bojack the cold, cynical guy that can't take care of himself and is afraid of commitment, manages to develop an affectionate relationship with a baby seahorse. He cares for him, saves him at many times, goes into crime in order to get milk to feed him and finally feels pain when he has to say goodbye. (Maybe he sees his younger self in this abandoned baby. It's a sea-HORSE after all :-) )

And there's a good joke at the very end of the episode.

That's it.

A Very Overrated Episode That Should Be Skipped
attliamlisa17 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, I'm just going to warn you guys, get ready to hate me. Get ready to just rip me a new one, because I don't like Fish Out of Water. Yeah, I don't like it. In fact, I'll go as far as to say that it's my least favorite episode of Bojack Horseman. And yes, this is despite what so many other people are saying about this episode. It's so amazing. They never talk, and that's why it's so great. It's beautiful. Blah blah blah. Not only do I not agree with these statements, but I don't really understand why people love this episode so much. Okay, let's just take a look at the story. In order to promote Secretariat, Bojack has to attend a film festival that's showing the film and takes place in an underwater world. Yeah, apparently there's an underwater world now. I'll get to my problems with this in a minute, but for now, let's stay focused. Due to the fact that Bojack can't talk underwater, a bunch of crazy mix ups happen and he ends up assisting in the birth of a bunch of seahorses on a bus. But, when one of the babies gets separated from the father, it's up to Bojack to return the baby safe and sound. So, my biggest problem with this episode is actually the same reason so many other people love it: None of the characters talk. And, okay, I know cartoons have gone without dialogue before and that it's not necessary to tell a story. But, my problem is, it is necessary for this show. This show is practically known for its brilliant dialogue. And to take that away, it feels like something's missing throughout the whole episode. Even if you've never seen an episode of this show in your life, you will still know that it is a very dialogue heavy show just based on the animation. Some cartoons are able to go without dialogue because their animation is beautiful enough that we get sucked in even if nobody talks. This show doesn't really have that. Aside from a few scenes with some pretty colors, the animation here feels as stilted as it always does. Another problem I have with this episode is the underwater world. Now, don't get me wrong. I understand that the city is supposed to be based off of New York, and I can see why. It's a world where the fish are aware of the surface world, so it makes sense for them to base their world off of our surface world. But, one problem with this is that it literally comes out of nowhere. This underwater world has never been mentioned in a previous episode and it's basically never mentioned again after this episode. So, it feels very random when we're suddenly introduced to the fact that this huge underwater world exists. The show has also done this with characters in the past, but I feel like they could get away with that because it is believable that they wouldn't mention these characters before a certain point, like Captain Peanutbutter. But, this huge underwater world, it feels like this would be mentioned somewhere in the two previous seasons. Also, this episode raises far too many questions for me to ignore, like how do land creatures eat underwater, how do they drink, how do they use the bathroom, how do their clothes not get baggy from being underwater, why do fish not need to breathe water if land animals need to breathe air? And that's only a fraction of the questions this episode raises. And, finally, there's the final revelation that Bojack could have been talking the whole time. Everyone else finds it brilliantly sadistic, but I just find it insultingly dumb. Like I said, I consider dialogue necessary for this show. It's just the kind of show that it is. So, the sudden revelation that my griping about the lack of dialogue was pretty much for nothing? I probably would have been more forgiving of this if Anna told Bojack about the fact that he could talk at the beginning of the episode and Bojack simply didn't listen. At least we would have known that way. But, this sudden revelation, just feels insulting to me. And why would none of the other animals Bojack encounters either tell Bojack he can talk or simply use their own helmets to talk to him themselves. So, does all this mean that there's nothing good about the episode? Not necessarily. There was a Japanese inspired commercial starring Mr Peanutbutter that made me laugh. The jokes about cultural misunderstandings, like a thumbs up apparently being the equivalent of the finger, those were pretty funny. I liked the idea of Bojack trying to make amends with Kelsey. And there are some quiet moments that actually worked. Like the scene where Bojack says goodbye to the kid he helped save, I feel like dialogue would've ruined that scene. But, those few good things don't make up for the boring events that could've been interesting if the animation weren't so stilted or the characters were allowed to talk. In my opinion, you should just skip this episode. It's not even really important to the show's lore. The events of the episode are maybe mentioned once or twice in future episodes. But, I can't really say you should skip it, because everyone else is saying how it's so amazing and beautiful and just one of the show's best episodes. So, I guess I have to recommend you watch the episode and judge it for yourself. But, the same way I'm trying to respect this episode's praise, try to respect that this was the only episode of Bojack Horseman that didn't keep me sucked in and constantly had me asking if it was almost over. And, in my opinion, that is more than enough for me to declare it the worst episode of Bojack Horseman.

Out-of-left-field Under the Sea
xclbr29 January 2022
I never watch BoJack Horseman before. I began bingeing it in January 2022. It's very funny, but it kind of follows the same humor format. I can imagine how this episode came out of nowhere and slapped people upside the head. It was 1 a.m. On Jan 29th when I started Fish Out of Water. I was looking at my phone and soon realized there was no dialogue coming from the TV. I put down my phone and I stared. I couldn't stop staring because without dialogue this episode did more to impress me, make me laugh, and set my life at ease than countless other TV shows packed with dialogue. It reminded me of Twin Peaks The Return Episode 8 "Gotta Light?" which tells a phenomenal, colossal story with almost no dialogue at all and is, quite possibly, the greatest scripted episode of TV ever created, without words. And this, this beautiful, uniquely impressive and moving episode of BoJack Horseman is similar. It forced me to put down my phone and watch to my utter delight and joy. Now I have to re-watch the entire season a BoJack Horseman because I think I've been missing stuff because I was looking at my phone.

Impeccable Gem.
SnowThatBlows30 July 2021
I think my headline perfectly describes what this episode is, a beautiful, dialogue-less, gem. Fish Out of Water to some might seem like an overrated episode, or one of the weaker higher rated episodes Bojack has ever had. And while, I am baffled to hear this, I can understand why. But that doesn't mean I agree, in fact, I HEAVILY disagree.

This has Bojack at his most pleasant, helping others instead of abusing or hurting them. This time, its a baby Sea Horse who was lost from their father. The adventures Bojack has with the Sea Horse to bring him back to his family is something I would love to see more in Bojack, even if the show ended, and I still find it as one of the most friendly things he has ever done for someone he didn't even know personally.

The sound track is a 10/10, and goes along with the type of vibes happening in this episode perfectly. I would definitely listen to this specific episode's soundtrack every time and still not find it boring to listen to, it's just that GOOD.

The visuals are amusing and stunning to watch, and makes this subtle episode even more beautiful. I can watch this episode a million times, literally, and still find it to be vibrant and engaging.

The other reviewers practically nailed down on what makes this episode fantastic and stand out from the rest, so I wasn't able to list everything that made this episode immaculate.

Overall, this episode is a masterpiece. If you haven't seen it already, what are you waiting for? It will blow your mind how original and captivating it is. Top 3 Bojack Horseman episodes, and one of the best episodes in television IMO.

What a unique and unforgetable experience!
and_mikkelsen31 January 2024
Wow.. this was something else and I absolutely loved it! This whole episode felt like an award winning animated shortfilm! It was SO different from the rest of the show and so brilliantly made!

This was funny, hilarious, creative, exciting and emotional! This all about expressions! You can tell what BoJack is going through just by looking at him! This was as much a journey for him as it was for us! He realized that life is all about the people you meet! For a momemt.. he learned the true value of helping someone!

The episode barely has any dialogue, but finds a way to tell its message in such a creative way, that everything just hits way harder!

This episode shows why this show is so great and brilliant!

Best episode in the whole series (so far). I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this episode and it was so moving and amazing. This is one of the best episodes i've ever seen and was flawless. I really recommend this series and have no doubt that everyone will love this episode. Seeing bojack look after a little seahorse showed us that he could've been capable of being an amazing father if he wanted that life. It was a great change to any episode to date and i didn't expect to be watching such a perfect episode considering the first three of season 3 were slightly underwhelming. But i could watch this over and over and never get bored.

Unique

Warning: Spoilers
This is such a unique episode. After watching the whole series I had to go back to this episode, which still stands as my favorite (as much as I love Free Churro, Time's Arrow, The View From Halfway Down, Ruthie, etc). I've never seen such a real representation of how it feels to not be heard, to try your best to communicate, to scream for help and forgiveness without anyone noticing. It's the perfect representation of what Bojack Horseman is: a series that contains incredible humor (especially the ending of this episode) while also facing really deep and difficult matters. This series never fails to impress me with its realistic portrait of the human condition and the struggles that people have to face to be loved, heard and accepted. From a technical side this episode uses a very peculiar narrative style: episodes and films with few to none spoken words have to challenge the fact that they have to still communicate emotions and keep the public entertained. Well, this episode does this perfectly with its pace and subplot, with the colorful animation but especially with Jesse Novak's incredible score. Plus the note that Bojack unsuccessfully gives to Kelsey contains one of my favorite quotes from the whole series. Great shows always have to take risks and I think this episodes proves how amazing Bojack Horseman is.

Overrated boring filler
ismaelsmsm-7349810 October 2023
What a disgrace for a great show like that with such a premise to have a useless episode shoved in the middle to fill the number gap. Because this season did NOT need 12 episodes and this one certainly wasn't one of them.

I hate this episode so much. It had a confusing world design that ruined the logic and made silly rather than sarcastic. And Bojack felt out of character the entire runtime when he was silent!!

It is completely fine if you skip it. It has no connection whatsoever with the season plot. I missed Diane and Todd and the usual crew. This is the WORST episode so far. WASTE OF TIME.

Incredible. Just finished watching it and was one of the only episodes in television that has made me cry. What made this episode oh so much better is the lack of dialogue, it made it so much more poignant and emotional.

The found parent trope that is so often poorly used is used with such skill that is only created by the emotion that we can see on Bojack's face is also just perfect. Everything about this episode I feel I could create a whole thesis upon, the incredible visuals, the.wonderful music behind it.

I have written this entire review at all once because I just absolutely adore this so much. I believe that I could watch this episode for the entire rest of my life and would still cry everytime.

Yet to finish the entire show but this episode is already my most favourite!
vvb127 January 2024
Just started binge watching this show and honestly this show is all that I expected it to be. I love shows with humour like this show so I am enjoying it!

Also I don't remember writing a review specifically of any particular episode of any show but this is the first time I felt creators deserves to know they have done a great job! Absolutely loved this episode.

This episode made me smile also a bit emotional. I can't really connect to Bojack the character but this time I could feel what Bojack must be feeling. Starting was just like any other Bojack Horseman episode but it just got better with every passing frame.

Can't wait to finish the show now :)
