Ripley (2024)
6/10
Overindulgent Overcooked Overlong
5 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Interesting but Over Indulgent, Over Padded and Over Cooked

Oscar winning director/writer Steven Zaillian gives us another incarnation of the fascinating Tom Ripley character most famously portrayed by Matt Damon in 1999's The Talented Mr. Ripley but also seen in several other films. This version though is all the 1999 version as Ripley (Andrew Scott) goes to Italy to buddy up to Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn) and assume his identity. Ripley's sudden involvement irks Greenleaf's girlfriend Marge (Dakota Fanning) and friend Freddie (Eliot Sumner) who have their doubts.

The 1999 version was close to perfection as a taut, tantalizing thriller with excellent performances across the board. This version is slick, scrumptious to look at and has a visually arresting, stylish aesthetic. Having the story shown in black and white is initially distracting in early episodes as it feels pretentious but is used to interesting visual effect. Shades of Hitchcock is very evident. Beautiful cinematography, lush technical qualities, excellent music score make this a polished production.

The story wobbles though. Like a lot of streaming programs today, this doesn't justify 8-episodes. A lot of it is padding, long drawn-out scenes of characters doing absolutely nothing. Weird because it omits a lot from the story (which we get to later). There's episodes where the lead is just wandering around looking into nothing.

The story is also a bit of a mess. All for artistic freedom and creativity but it deviates a lot from the original story but doesn't really add anything in. The Dickie character is killed off very early and there's a few episodes just of Ripley doing nothing much. The Freddie character comes in one episode, disappears completely until they are back for their murder scene but by then we've had just one scene of the character so we're not invested in anything about this person. The disposing of Freddie's body takes a LONG time (a good 30 minutes) of Ripley driving around Italy to dispose a body. Again the padding is extraordinary. The Marge character disappears throughout and there is a lack of chemistry between her and Dickie only because they barely have any screen time together. Curious to why the 8-hours is focused on long, extensively drawn out scenes of the lead just walking by himself around Italy. A few characters from the original are also omitted presumedly to let us see more of Scott walking around Italy as if he is a man on some mission.

The cast are fine but struggle to match the committed performances of the film. Dakota Fanning fares best by injecting a compassionate yet suspicious girlfriend. Johnny Flynn is OK but its hard to like him - a flaw which Jude Law combatted so perfectly in his award-nominated take. The Dickie character is just boring and not fun at all. Eliot Sumner's variation of Freddie is odd to say the least. Andrew Scott as the titular character is practically in every scene - 8 hours' worth of Scott really. There's a commitment to his performance for sure but it doesn't quite hit the mark. Damon's variation had depth - Scott's version is wooden, stiff and confusing. He walks around empty like some cyborg. Even the scenes he is supposed to be ravishing with intensity - he is monotone.

By episode 6, I was getting pretty tired of watching Scott walking around the dead of night through Italy, up and down stairs, across the street, staring into a window...

Not a total skip, but it's definitely a fast forward program to get through. There's about 3 hours of wasted time on indulgence.

Beautiful to look at, empty in its core.

You Are All Being Played.
25 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Interesting. Yes. But like every Hollywood doco - it's focused on sensationalism and a specific target rather than looking at the bigger picture.

Dan Schneider - yep not a good guy. Nobody can argue different.

Brian Peck - deserves to be in jail forever. Sure.

But with four long episodes what's really the point?

The part which is strategically omitted here - productions of TV shows have hundreds and hundreds of cast, crew, production, parents etc. Dan may have been the creator of these shows but there's producers, directors, legal, executives who are also part of the decision making process, are across the behaviours and allowed this to happen. The amount of people interviewed going "I could have spoken up" - well yeah you could have but you didn't and now want to be seen as a hero for sharing your brave story. No.

And again, everyone turned a blind eye for fame, success and money. 20 years later now they ALL have a grim story to share. (I am sure the financial incentive to share their stories is helpful too).

As for the performers themselves - Drake Bell is the only one who could be said to be somewhat famous but again he has had a VERY LONG history of doing bad stuff so him coming forward is the greatest PR-moment - negating all his bad behaviour by now being the victim. So that explains him here. No other performer here really is close to relevant so the 15 minutes of fame and a bit of cash seems the obvious motivation to share their story. Ariana Grande? Nah. Victoria Justice? Jamie Lee Spears? Even she has a lot to dish about her famous sister but couldn't be bothered here. Kel Mitchell? Kenan? Josh Peck?

Episode 1 Highlights

Skip it nothing happens. A lot of irrelevant people have opinions.

A lot of scenes of his famous shows where characters are doing highly suspect things which is inappropriate. Hmmmmmmmmm .... NOBODY flinched when these shows aired, none of the production, network, even the audience, the stars. The scene of Ariana Grande was laughed at in good jest in the 2000s now is a sexually concerning scene. Oh please. ALL his fault too - the writers wrote the skit, they are not to blame apparently.

Episode 2 Highlights - A lot of people whinge.

An editor is complaining about being forced to not go to the toilet by Dan, how she fainted or something and they asked who will finish the episode? Makes sense since they have air dates. But wait she got denied for a promotion for being a woman apparently (her view). I don't know - someone who fainted and seems burnt out perhaps wasn't ready for a promotion.

Another producer is fired but it's not his fault - it's Dans. Its as if this guy never worked in Hollywood before.

Amanda Bynes - a lot of people who are not Amanda Bynes are telling us the inside out of Amanda Bynes. Opinion, not a fact. Pointless.

Bryan Hearne who appeared in seasons 7-8 on one of the shows has a sob story - poor black kid, overbearing mom who really doesn't think she is - still unclear what Dan had to do with this or how its relevant to the story except for the fact the production needed diversity storytelling and this was a way to pad out episode 2. I dunno a lot of people get kicked off TV shows after 1 season but he is in therapy 20 years later because of it apparently. His Mom describes this as a house of horrors as ominous music is played over her. You cant make this stuff up.

Episode 3 - The Drake episode I have issue here. Whatever happened to him is wrong, very wrong but the producers are turning him into a victim when he has been the perpetrator to other people. You are negating what he has done wrong to others by giving him an opening to be a victim. Sorry doesn't work that way. Screams of PR.

I couldn't get through this one. Its sensationalism at its worse. Morally wrong. And with no real outcome. So we forgive Drake for hitting his girlfriend? Right. He uses the word mental manipulation to describe Brian... ironic

Episode 4 - Highlights Name and shame Hollywood celebrities for coming to Brian's defence. Targeting these people who didn't know anything vs. A victim who became a perpetrator. At least they have the decency to air Joanna Kerns statement.

This journalist who was probably 7 when this happened is earnest in her crusade to out these people and try and ruin their lives. She's relentless in her attacks.

The culture writer who appeared with a lot of unnecessary opinions in the first few episodes is back with a lot to say but they're just words. Not facts.

Actress Aleka Nichols joins by saying how horrible her experience was; she remembers an episode which was traumatising for her. Its all Dan's fault - not the writers or producers or directors or anyone at the network.

A costumer also has a lot to complain about but she wants to conceal her identity because nobody will recognise her LOL

Everybody turned a blind eye.... Including the people in this interview.

Style Over Substance
21 March 2024
PROS
  • film looks good, it's stylish and has flair. The location is captured well. Production design, the soundtrack and tech specs are pretty polished.

  • interesting visual flair of course coming from Doug Liman. Got a rawness to the direction.

  • Billy Magnussen puts in a solid supporting turn.

CONS
  • script is a mess and a real snooze. Lots of ideas and opportunities missed.

  • Jake Gyllenhaal is wasted bad. Jake is about the charm. He's just mopey and grumpy. Character is unpleasant and confusing to his motivations.

  • the rest of the cast of characters barely register. The females get a really dire showing.

  • it's self indulgent long. By like 30 mins long. Why!

Jakes on a roll of earnest but boring movies. Get him Something interesting.

Really want to support these films but...
9 March 2024
Loving the shift in supporting films like this and even better coming from Australia but there needs to be a better way of telling these stories. The set up whilst a little hokey is fine since it is a rom-com and they are not known for innovation. It's the script is rife with cliches, stereotypes, illogical ideas, stupidity and cartoonish banality. Sydney does look beautiful, it's well shot but the director struggles to elevate above the silliness.

Acting ranges from solid (Yosan An, Tzi Ma,Renee Lim) to odd (Desmond Chiang) to outright awful - lead Shuang Hu is just terrible. The character is also very unlikable - why anyone would want to date her is bizarre.

Again let's support these diverse films but have competent writers and directors handling the material.

Messy show
1 March 2024
Totally get it mix Deal or No Deal with Survivor which isn't a bad idea. But it makes no sense whatsoever.

I pushed through the first episode because it looked like it was going somewhere. But it didn't lol

The casting isn't bad - Boston Rob is naturally saving the series from some people who think this is their meal ticket to stardom.

Then in the last 5 minutes they turn the tables and get rid of someone completely invisible for the entire episode. Nah...

That poor guy didn't even get anything through the episode so you can't just blindside the audience like that and it made no sense because it negates the entire deal or no deal part... Play fair

Editing is shocking. Don't have all these contestants if you're focusing on the most weird and desperate for fame.

Too Snobby and Pretentious
7 February 2024
It's not a bad show but the potential is squandered by its pretentiousness and in this era of murder mysteries - it's far below the standards set by Only Murders in the Building and The Afterparty.

It looks good. Nifty cinematography and beautiful sets.

The story is fine although a little boring. There's been a few episodes where a lot of it was just padding - nothing is happening. It feels they have a 5-episode series and stretching it out to 10-episodes with a lot of filler.

Five episodes in - I am uninterested in who the murderer is because I am not invested in any character except for the inspector investigating it.

The cast are just boring. Mandy Patinkin is doing his usual performance. I do like Linda Emond - she is the only interesting one.

All the suspects are zzzzzz.... a lot of them are very uninteresting. The character development woeful.

A big issue with peak TV era - we are focusing on diversity requirements over selecting the right person for the role. This is a VERY strategically diverse cast to tick every box possible. So the stories are based on diversity really rather than any character development. We all know which ethnic groups will NOT reveal to be the murderer so those characters are pointless right now.

The lead girl - Violett Beane is obnoxious and rude. Yawn.

A waste of a really good opportunity.

They Could Try a Little Harder
10 January 2024
As a passionate advocate for multi-camera sitcoms, it's somewhat disappointing that the genre is churning out lazy efforts with seasoned professionals. Jon Cryer and Donald Faison both have terrific comedy chops (they have like 700 episodes of TV classics between them under their belt) but are wasted in this "been-there-done-that" tale of divorce. Cryer to his credit is trying hard (if a little too hard), Faison looks bored and whilst Abigail Spencer sparkles and delivers comedy well, she's a bit miscast. It's noticeable and especially tacky in 2024 of the age difference between her and her male co-stars. Spencer is 42, Faison 49 and Cryer is 58 so the distance between Cryer and Spencer just feels off. They were married 17 years back so that would have made him 41 and her 25. Either Cryer or Spencer needed to go somewhere in the mix - it's just odd and it makes believing in the premise harder. The kids are generic cookie-cutter copies of a 2000's sitcom too but are just background fodder to really Cryer, Faison and Spencer. Nobody expects a show like this to be at a high caliber but they could put a little more effort.

Good Grief (IV) (2023)

Solid Debut for Levy
10 January 2024
Dan Levy steps behind the cameras for a solemn yet ardent look at grief and unexpected loss. Levy goes slightly against his "Schitt's Creek"-persona to try and convey an emotional and sincere character study and despite a rocky start the film finds its groove and gets quite moving particularly in the third act. Solid directing, lush cinematography showing a glorious Paris at Christmas. Still, quite a bit of the premise and writing is pretentious, unrelatable and unrealistic - can we ever get a film like this where the characters have regular jobs? Levy is sturdy in the lead, Himesh Patel is quite good but appears stuck in a different film whilst Ruth Negga is grating to say the least - her character is already in contention for one of the worst in 2024. She comes close to ruining the movie with her vain, selfish and unlikable character. Solid debut!

Fake Netflix Fluff
24 April 2023
Yet another clinical, artificial Netflix rom-com, one of those cookie cutter copy/paste jobs they churn out on a weekly basis and disguise as "films".

A shame since any production wanting to showcase Vietnam and it's magical beauty has an advantage. Shame the screenplay is predictable, corny and at times just plain boring. Even with the Vietnam hook.

Yet like a lot of Netflix productions, the need to inject diversity is too pandering - I mean the black lesbian couple with the daughter - way too on the Netflix nose. Supporting cast are all just cliches- dorky white boy, successful black lesbian moms, old funny English couple... yawn. None resemble a soul.

Rachel Leigh Cook is the poor woman's Natalie Portman. Not necessarily her fault, she's talented but had a bad agent back in the day. Portman went onto an Oscar, Cook well ... Netflix rom coms. Life never went on after "Shes All That". She isn't too bad here.

Bland Vanity Project for Rob Lowe
6 April 2023
Oh dear, yet another Rob Lowe vanity project. The actor can deliver some good work when he tries but has the tendency to hop into these type of programs which are designed for him to be smug, obsess with himself and play unlikable people. This is one of those shows.

Smug smug smug

He has brought his son along with the ride - John Owen Lowe who is ... bland. Very bland. The opposite of his father - he is so uninvolved as an actor and seems bored throughout.

Supporting cast are unmemorable even though they are written to be quirky. Nah they're just boring. Some of them Are apparently regulars but are non existent. Again the show is all about Rob Lowe.

Netflix has commitment issues with these type of comedies so don't expect it to be back for a second year. A miss.

Ross Butler Stands Out in So-So boxing drama
29 March 2023
Sometimes a film tries a bit too hard - Castille Landon can definitely direct, she has some good moves up her sleeve and the fight scenes are well crafted.

Boxing movies are not the most common idea so this one at least has an interesting angle.

Execution is a bit of a miss.

Voice over in film can be sometimes unpleasant. This is an example of it not helped by Kiana Madeira who simply can't act and lacks personality. Her voice is monotone so the voice over from her is boring. The character is interesting, the performance not so much.

Matthew Noszka isn't that far off with his acting either but he is incredibly, absolutely, amazingly GORGEOUS! Plus he doesn't have to do much, so it's not that noticeable. He does the bad boy well.

That leaves us with Ross Butler who by far is the best performer of the bunch. He rises above the material and gives it his shot. He is HOT too, but has the acting chops to back it up.

The music soundtrack is a bit annoying too.

There's a dream scene though which is hotter than a lot of movies of recent years.

Stronger execution, a more enthusiastic lead and focus would have helped.

Netflix ruins another great documentary concept
9 March 2023
I was hanging for this doco then realised it was coming from the house of excess - Netflix.

There wasn't a requirement for 3 hours of episodes for what should have been a 90-120 min at best doco. A lot of padding, excess and repetitive storytelling, it goes a bit nowhere and is at times boring.

Then they have just a few families talking, if it's going to drag on perhaps more diverse interviews. A lot of shots of Kuala Lumpur over and over.

It's all just filler.

By half way in episode 1, I had no idea what storytelling narrative they were going with. And it never felt focused.

Again lots of shots of Malaysia which have *nothing* to do with this documentary.

Assuming they couldn't get a lot of footage from the real disappearance.

Could have been worse, at least we didn't have actors pretending to be "people" like they weirdly do in kther Netflix docos.

Of all the streamers, Netflix do documentaries the absolute worse.

Disappointing!

Clinical, a bit like a hospital
10 February 2023
The best way to describe the latest from Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence is clinical. Very clinical. Sterile.

It's lacking depth and a soul.

Technically everything is proficient - but it's too obvious. Jason Segal is photocopying the same sad sack weirdo that he has done too many times now. He is unpleasant and unlikable- not a sincere lead at all.

And how unprofessional is he!! Like seriously, the things he does. Also doesn't give the profession a great reputation!

Harrison Ford is great, rises above the material but hey it's Harrison Ford!

The rest of the cast are uneventful. Some better actress to support Segal and Ford would have been helpful.

Again try and inject a heart into a show like this. It's all way too obvious and too clinical.

Alisha Wainwright may be the worst actress ever
28 January 2023
Alisha Wainwright may be the worst actress ever. Her acting is awful in every possible way. The fact she is our lead and the obvious focus is even worse. She wouldn't even do well in a background role. Her facial expressions are amateur, her acting is atrocious, her crying insincere, she just is awful. Awful. Awful.

Please don't let her in any other movie, TV show, play, commercial, even a town hall play.

Zach Gilford is better.

Movie is still bad even though she makes it worse. The kids are terrible. There's nothing happening on the screen all the kills happen off camera.

The music score sounds like a church.

Exceeded Expectations
20 January 2023
*** an absolute surprise, clever, funny sitcom. Never seen the original but it appears to Put effort into playing homage to that show. The script is quite sharp, sparkles and is actually laugh out funny.

People like to be snobs about these sitcoms, why deprive yourself to laugh and just let yourself enjoy a harmless comedy like this.

The cast are all very good - John Larroquette is a legend. He is so in his element as always. Melissa Rauch is cute and endearing. LaCretta is having a ball - love her.

Great production design, loving the intro, is faithful to sitcoms. We need more of them would love to see this one last a few years.

It'll be gone after two seasons max
20 January 2023
Saved by the Bell... axed Punky Brewster... axed Head of the Class... axed

And now That 90s Show

Credit for honouring the original. Credit for the nostalgia. Credit to the cast. Loving the original cast doing appearances. Feels like a 1990s sitcom.

Reyn Doi Is the highlight of the young cast.

Easily digestible. Watchable. Forgettable.

But none of these remakes are lasting on the streamers so the precedent is pretty much against this show going anywhere fast. And it's on Netflix who forget about a show quicker than anyone. Might get a second year if that.

That 70s Show did 200 episodes. This one will be lucky to get 20.

Why bother.

Watch The Simpsons episode
10 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There's a great Treehouse of Horror episode of the early years of "The Simpsons" which did this a million times better and in just 10 minutes.

It's a great idea but poorly executed by lazy storytelling. It's obvious from the beginning which character will survive (hint! Think PC-friendly), the characters are awful (except for Lexi) and the death scenes whilst gruesome make no real sense.

What was the motive of Margaux killing people?

The opening act whilst intense - what was the connection to any of it?

None of it really makes any sense yet it drags on a bit.

And wait to you see some of the FX!

I mean it could have tried a bit harder.

27 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Indulgent, pretentious. Boring.

Half way through a whole heap of people are killed in a rather nasty way. All the white and Asian people are killed of course. And we'll, you can guess what happens to our heroes Daniel and Keke of course.

Nasty...

Keke and the guy playing Angel are good. Steven could have been given more to do but Daniel is sedated throughout in a boring performance...

The idea whilst intriguing and original is also a bit ridiculous and there's no real payoff.

Also what's the point of Stevens backstory? What is the point of the TV show scenes?

A movie with a hundred unanswered questions isn't a good movie. And of course it goes on for a very long time.

Jordan Peele should be ashamed.

Urghhh...

The high ratings suggests people are just dumb
19 April 2022
BORING is the word of the day here.

Long... overblown... excessive... exhausting.... Pointless... did I say long? Really long!

Dreary... sullen... Nobody has a pulse in this movie.

Anyone who wants to spend 3 hours of this movie and say it's some cinematic master piece has very low expectations or just too excited to be in the Batman business. This is 3 hours of yawn.

Good set design. Some good technical specs - great music score and cinematography. Probably about 5 good sequences and nothing memorable like the other instalments. Heck, even Batman Forever had more memorable scenes.

Robert Pattison sleeps his way as Batman.

Zoe Kravitz starts good, gets bad, does Ok - she's All over the place. Paul Dano isn't too bad but hasn't a lot of scenes. Colin Farrell apparently is in this LOL...

Batman isn't fun, he's a grump.

I would have taken 13 more episodes of "Superstore" instead
30 January 2022
This show is just a pale copycat of a lot of great NBC shows including "Superstore" which was criminally finished way before it's time. This is what we get as a replacement?

Assuming they couldn't bring those writers across either.

An ensemble like this needs a cast to pop. The cast here don't match or mix at all. None of them are really interesting either. Some are really annoying cliches (the British guy, the overweight black lady)

Oh the horror! First episode has to be about diversity ... the scenes with them discussing BLM etc... Urgh. How many times do we need this storyline ?

Idea was sound. Execution isn't great.

Nicely shot but empty feel good movie
7 January 2022
George Clooney directs nicely but this has the same issue as "Suburbicon" - it's an empty movie. The screenplay isn't great and it wastes interesting ideas with pointless plot devices.

I have loved Ben Affleck in a lot lately - he has become such an accomplished actor but this role is essentially the "1990s Ben Affleck" photocopy in 2022. Nothing special.

Lily Rabe. Wasted Christopher Lloyd. Even more wasted

Tye Sheridan as the lead is Ok, but not that special either.

The subplot with him with a black girl in the 1970s? Yeah ... Ok sure lol. We all know that wasn't a common thing back then but hey let's rewrite history. Why bother with the attention to detail if you are going to omit for your own political devices.

Clooney can direct but needs to control the narrative better.

I wish I had movies like this growing up
4 December 2021
What a time for a gay kid to be growing up.

In the 90s growing up I loved Christmas movies and every one was the same straight story. I longed for a movie like this at Christmas.

Love how we can have a cute, whimsical comedy like this with great performances and a lot of love. People complaining about the family need to watch something else- families SHOULD be this supportive and loving and happy.

The leads are good together. Great supporting cast with Kathy Najimy and Jennifer Coolidge in fine form.

Loved Barry Bosworth as the dad.

Yeah it's corny and syrupy but that's what these movies are! Bring on more!

King Richard (2021)

Will Smith is just playing Will Smith
21 November 2021
If Will Smith goes onto winning an Oscar for this film then the Academy is warped. The biggest mistake this film makes is fatal - focusing on Richard who is an enormously unlikable character to root for... especially for 2 ½ hours. If the film focused on the Venus sisters then you have a good story here and whenever it quickly deviates and gives us their POV it's interesting. Instead we have the brass, arrogant, bully Richard screaming his way through a very long and muddled film. He is a mean character. Not worthy for a film. I am unsure what is the appeal here. There's nothing remotely nice about him. Will Smith's performance is Will Smith playing Will Smith yet again. He wants the Oscar bad and has been making attempts for quite sometime now to no avail. But like "Concussion" or "The Pursuit of Happyness" or "Collateral Beauty" - he is copying the same performance. Over and Over again. This time the Academy may feel compelled to give in and finally shut him up. Jon Bernthal and Aunjanue Ellis in supporting roles are good. The girls playing the Venus sisters are also quite good. Smith though just yells and screams and complains and screams again... and that's apparently an Oscar performance.

Tech specs are good but the film is enormously long and loses a lot of momentum and the screenplay is a bit too hokey. Also - don't think we need to portray every white person as adversaries. They are not all evil in this world. Could have been something great.

JGL is excellent, show is uneven
10 September 2021
JGL is one of the best actors of our current era. He also has provided some of the best performances in TV and theatrical. He is also eccentric and a little quirky. Mr. Corman delivers yet another great character. The show really is taking some risks so early on which will probably alienate some viewers. The structure of the series is a bit choppy and uneven. A couple episodes are really good then a couple divert from the concept and are pointless. Did we need a whole episode already about his roommate who is missing for a lot of other episodes? Anything that promotes mental health is a huge tick and some of the scenes are brilliantly written and played but then it drifts off into "Ally McBeal"-territory and drags on some ideas which have no pay off. JGL is behind-the-scenes on this one so he takes a bit of responsibility here. I would be surprised if this gets a second season and even more shocked if it ever gets to a third one. JGL is kinda to blame here despite yet another excellent performance.
