Don't you just hate it when...
Top_Dawg_Critic5 November 2020
...you order a high-tech modern advanced space ship - online, and they send you a used junkyard rust-bucket with 80's analog tech? Ya, me too.

This is amateur writer, director, producer, editor, cinematographer, sound, set designer, composer, S&VFX (whew) Marcel Barion's first main film project. It's a heck of a risk to wear pretty much every filmmaking hat, and not flop, especially by a new filmmaker. But I have to say, he was very close to pulling it off.

I joked about the old tech clunker spaceship set, but in reality, it was awesome. I'm sure he had a limited budget for this indie film, but somehow he made it work, and I felt I knew every part of that ship. The cinematography, S&VFX were absolutely stunning and perfection... better than some seasoned filmmakers movies I've seen lately. The score was also perfect, especially for a B grade film, where they are usually loud, overbearing and unfitting. The two cast members gave decent performances.

BUT, where this film drastically failed, was in the long dragged out and convoluted story (especially the lame ending), the slow pacing that made the already too-long 113 min runtime feel like 3+ hours, and the constant long camera shots that felt like someone paused the film. I think Barion must've misplaced his editor's hat, because this film needed at least 30-45 mins cut out to make the story and pacing bearable. The story started off well, but once they were flying, the conversations were just dumb and insignificant. It's like a 5th grader wrote the dialogue, and got bored towards the ending. The story never really switched gears until the last 10 minutes. So basically, take the first and last 15-20 mins, get rid of the useless middle filler, and this would've been a great short film.

What's really sad, is that all Barion had to do, is have his screenplay proofread and edited by a seasoned writer, and everything would've fallen into place, and this film would've been outstanding. Nevertheless, still an impressive production by an amateur filmmaker that put this entire film together by himself. Sadly, it's only a 6/10, but could've easily been at least an 8 or more. Hopefully Barion will learn from this for his next project. Still, bravo for his first attempt.

Slow and low budget
komaro-521094 November 2020
This is a low budget scifi. Although the FX are relatively decent, it is filmed in a very dark settings. The story doesn't say much and most of the questions in the end, are left unanswered. At first I though it was a filming decision, but it was a budget decision. The less you explain, the less you have to show. The two actors are average at best, with some better moments. The dialogues are eclectic and miss some logic to it. The rhythm is excessively slow. I didn't enjoy the movie and skim in a lot of places. I give 4 because it's low budget and I don't know how much the story had suffer from it.

Almost has the winning combination
Crankgorilla22 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The characters were annoyingly distant and terrible at communication. Whomever wrote the story was close to something good but it seems like they have never actually talked to a human being before. There's lots of long pauses, characters ignoring questions, not asking questions, not making valid arguments to their purpose, not compromising on their wants, all kinds of strange behaviour. I suppose it could be because they're damaged by a tortured life, but it swings from sanity to insanity constantly. I wouldn't want to be on a ship with either of them. They're too weird. I wouldn't even want to go on a road trip with them. I'd rather walk.

The ending was a bit loopy. What happened to that guy on the golden planet. I'm not the brightest spark but even I could tell it was inhospitable. They can't survive there. He should have accepted it was a dead end and tried the other guys plan. Simply stating that he wanted to check it out, and if there was nothing there they could move on to plan B. But instead, I gather he lost his marbles and called it a day. Not a logical choice, he still had other options.

That said though, I think it brings home a good 5/10 because it kept me curious and the sets, costumes and acting were excellent. It's memorable and almost has the winning combination of story, art and mystery.

Dark and claustrophobic Indie SciFi
daniel-raboldt-990-50251110 November 2020
I watched that film at the Berlin SciFi Filmfestival. It was late at night, dark outside and the cinema was full of people.

I love films that take place in confined spaces and I love space movies. Two men, alone on a voyage through the emptiness of space. Please don't expect some dumb action flic, because this is so much better. It is a philosophical journey, it deals with life, expectations, greed, hope and it tells us a lot about ourselves, how we treat each other and how fast we can turn on each other. If you aren't into subjects like this, you shouldn't watch it. But if you love films that are not only entertaining but have something to say, then this is a movie for you!

I love films like this and I also love awesome spaceship interiors. The design and the models are amazing, and it's even more astounding when you learn, that this is a real independent movie and that they built all the models, the interiors and even the stars themselves, without using any cgi. I wish there were more films like this, that are made with passion and a true love for cinema!

Edit: Like all good films, this one gets better with every rewatch!

Not A Good Arthouse Film. Lacks Narrative Coherence. Not Intriguing.
storydjdjlajdfjd28 March 2021
I've seen alot of arthouse films. This one isn't good. It's very slow with a raw, natural dialogue that doesn't add anything valuable to the film. The pacing is slow. The shots are static. These elements aren't necessarily bad unless you're missing a strong dramatic need. In this case, you are. Hence, a lack of narrative coherence. The two men in the derelict ship need more than to just want to get off a difficult world. The philosophical premise doesn't support the dull plot either. Two lost souls ignorant of their humanity doesn't strike a high enough chord. I don't care of his name is Adam. Nothing in the film works except for the set which is exemplary. But if that made a good movie, I'd watch Iron Man 2 again. In the dark.

The whole universe
nogodnomasters3 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Adem (Torben Föllmer ) is an escaped criminal on a planet with sandstorms. He finds an abandoned ship by chance. He is captured by Novak (Milan Pesl ). They both want off the planet. The ship is of unknown origin and purpose, but appears operable. They take off for space. PLOT SPOILER. Adem wants to go to mythical Earth while Novak does not.

They seem to be moving slow through space. I can't imagine them going anywhere. Once in space, you can fast forward to about the 90 minute mark. It is slow and boring up to that point. I didn't understand the helmet scene which appears to be back of this back to the garden theme.

Dubbed in English. Subtitles available.

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity.

Slow but worth seeing if you like bleak hard SF
thomasyork-724721 November 2021
I sped it up to 2x speed, which solved the slowness. The story was good. It reminds me of Moon and other bleak hard SF films that show the loneliness of space and the human condition. If mankind ever does get into space, this is probably what awaits us: unliveable planets, isolation, fear, loneliness, a longing for a home world, difficult comrades, failing technology. Don't watch this if you need cheering up or laughs. But if you like dark or hard SF with ambiguity and deeper themes, it's good. The original is German but I managed to find an English dubbed version.

Started out with good intentions.
ak67025 July 2021
What started out with a cool plot was quickly ruined by a lack of middle and end. Could have been a good low budget sci fi movie but just never really went anywhere. Also did the spaceship not have a shower and bathroom for the two men to take care of basic hygiene?

Promised Land (?)
kosmasp19 August 2021
Science Fiction movies with a low budget and practical effects are a hard sell. Especiall when they took almost a decade overall to complete. And even more so when whoever releases the movie compares it to Alien and Kubricks 2001. That is quite bold to say the least.

On the other hand some may feel there is merit to that. I personally did not feel many connections to said movies. Apart from them all being in outer space (not on Earth) and in the Science Fiction genre. Well and maybe having a bit of mystery attached to them. But don't expect anything as close as bloody as Alien or as close as philosophical and life altering as 2001.

Having said that, the movie is well done and you mostly should not notice the small (crowdfunded) budget this was made on. I was lucky enough to catch it on a big screen, but most will stream it - fairly certain of that. They probably will be distracted by other things (has happened to me too) - especially in the slower moments ... and there are lots of them.

PASS IF YOU LOVE STAR WARS!!!!!!
johnmanno-779613 November 2021
Do you like big explosions? Do you like GOOD vs EVIL? Do you like women in tight uniforms in space? Do you like fast, "exciting" plots? Do you like heartwarming interactions? Do you like everything resolved and satisfying conclusions? Do you like every single question and ambiguity answered and clarified?

Then skip this movie. Don't even look at its trailer.

However, if you like films like Tarkovsky makes, or films that are highly ambiguous, or films that leave you puzzled. Then watch this.

No. It's no "Solaris". But it's a good indie European film that thankfully doesn't explain every single thing, sucking all the mystery and interest out of the script, leaving a bland, predictable husk.

As for the negative reviews you'd see here, well, I sincerely wonder if science fiction might be held back from attaining its artistic potential because of the audience that's drawn to it. Lynch's "Dune" was widely despised. Though I am amazed that Kubrick's "2001" is well beloved, as that's filled with unanswered questions, "slow boring sequences" and such. Though it does have "the evil entity", which probably helps people navigate it.

Anyway. I liked this movie. I wish more sci-fi was like it, and less was like Disney.

Great effort.
morgan-659-31284226 March 2022
Considering this was done on next to nothing financially the result is remarkable. The main set is well designed and exudes the feel of a derelict, grubby and confined ship. The acting is pretty good and in places is reminiscent of German 20's silent films. It's difficult to comment on the dialogue as I only saw the English dubbed version so it felt a bit stilted. That's probably not fair on the original. Some people have complained about the pacing. Yes, it is slow but that's the nature of the situation and the sense of realism depends largely on both the awful confines and the relentless march of time. I didn't expect much from this but given the circumstances under which it was made but I am quite impressed. It's a fascinating film and should have cult status rather than be written off as a cheap trick. Highly recommended.

Don't waste your time
bettypeterson-9600919 May 2021
It was dark and you could hardly see the people or where they were. I find it hard to believe anyone gave it more than one star. I understand trying to get off any planet if you are a prisoner but couldn't they make it lighter so we could see it. I would go anywhere to escape, but flying thru space and showing nothing - not even a shooting star. I can't believe I watched the whole stupid movie. I am throwing the disk away.... I never want my family to find this after I an dead and gone.

ONE OF THE WORST SCIENCE FICTION FILMS I HAVE WATCHED.
aliozcankaya8 November 2020
I watched the movie until the end. It is said to be a low budget movie, but even if you give a million dollars to this scenario, the story is very bad. It doesn't even have a story!

A two hour slow paced movie about nothing...
paul_haakonsen24 January 2022
Granted, when I stumbled upon the 2019 German sci-fi mystery titled "Das Letzte Land" (aka "Final Voyage") here in 2022 then I hadn't even heard about it. So I didn't have any idea of what to expect from writer and director Marcel Barion. And normally I am not overly keen on sci-fi movies, but I still opted to watch "Das Letzte Land" as I had the opportunity to do so.

And boy, this was a slow paced movie. And making it even worse was the fact that virtually nothing overly interesting happened throughout the course of the almost two hours that the movie ran for. So it was a long and strenuous ordeal to sit through "Das Letzte Land".

Having a movie with essentially just two actors trapped inside a small spacefaring vessel and not really having much of anything else going on didn't exactly make for an exciting or entertaining movie. So I have to say that "Das Letzte Land" fell short of providing me with much of any enjoyment.

Sure, the acting performances in the movie were adequate, but it was futile as the actors virtually had nothing to work with in terms of script, storyline or dialogue.

Visually then "Das Letzte Land" was actually quite adequate. It wasn't a movie that made a whole lot use of special effects and CGI, but whatever was there and used actually worked out well enough.

My rating of "Das Letzte Land" lands on a three out of ten stars, and that is based on the production value mostly.

Unique, slow, mysterious and worth seeing.
breeze4724 April 2022
This kept me interested all the way through.

It isn't a fast paced film but the top quality set and space visuals keep your eyes happy.

I like a good mystery and it's one after another on their journey. I would have happily sat through another hour of this if the story had continued.

The set is amazing, it really feels like a small old ship two people spent years in before these two found it.

Sound effects are perfect so is the acting. It's short on answers but there's enough in this to make you're own guesses.

Unique, slow, brilliant and it felt real. Enjoyed it. Though i did have to turn the brightness up a few notches.

Watch the the title, The Boat, on shudder and you'll see a totally different movie. The wrong movie!! An absolute abomination that has nothing to do with the title! What a horrible disgrace! An utter disappointment and embarrassment, how completely disgusting! Shame!!

A Curmudgeon Review
gregking-333008 January 2024
I watched the entire movie. That is time I will never get back. It is well made for a shoestring budget, however the story is vague, the plot vague and the characters need a shower. A better title for the movie would be The Last Voyage of the Vague warriors. Or the vast vagueness of space, Or don't listen to the strange signal or you will go nowhere slowly. As a Science Fiction movie, it may check plenty of boxes. The special effects are pretty good. The actors seem to follow a scripted story. The suspense kept me focused on what would happen next and at the movies ending it clicked. I would leave a review that leaves the reader as wanting as me for my time back.

Kept Me on board for the whole voyage
rw9300328 March 2021
Interactions between two guys with completely different skill sets and no idea where they were going on an old salvaged space ship about the size of a small travel trailer kept me watching and thinking all the way through. Would have been nice to have the ship's computer logs translated from German to English but the movie worked anyway. Ended too soon for me.

Beautiful Mystery
p_beine7720 September 2021
NO Spoilers Finally I watched it! I hope I get to see it on a big screen again some day.

The Blu-ray (Amazon) looks really good and I was amazed by the sharp Close-Ups and very well done Sound Effects and Music. It never gets too loud and blends in perfectly.

I watched the german original language.

The actors do a very good Job and the Set Design (No CGI!) is an additional character that is so fun to look at, that I did not notice how quickly the time passed and was really surprised it was over so soon. Mystery and Sci-Fi were always my favourite genres, naturally I loved this german gem!

Waiting for Godot
robbie-8021910 November 2020
Feels more like a surreal theatre play by Beckett than like the scifi action b-movie you maybe expect. It's dark, it's an entertaining arthouse drama (which is a rare combination), it looks cool (reminded me a lot of "Alien") and it's acted pretty well.

It also has something to say. I just don't know what, yet. But I'll watch it again. Definitely.

Wait, they constructed all the sets and the miniatures in their garage??? Consider my mind blown. 😍

This is was science fiction is all about
alivingdog10 November 2020
I'm so grateful for films like this in times of stupid corporate franchises like Marvel or DC films, which pretend to be science fiction but are just empty shells of repetitive plot points and shallow characters.

In "The final land" (or "Final Voyage" as it has been called now) you won't get any of this. But instead you are confronted with deep philosophical questions about who we are and where we are heading. And ladies and genlemen, THIS is what SCIENCE FICTION is about. If you don't like this, go watch the 37th installment of "Iron Man".

The passion that went into this film is incredible. They built the ships interior, the models and space itself in years of hard work, locked themselves in with the actors and accomplished something that most big Hollywood studies failed to do for decades. A good, interesting and fascinating science fiction film!
