No grit here. Fluff at its finest
lsharkette27 March 2020
I loved Project Runway and I am happy to see "Klunn" back together again on a platform untainted by H. Weinstein, but I am sorely missing the scrappy PR contestants! The contestants on Making the Cut are established designers who have seamstresses at their disposal in this competition that come in at night and sew, elves and the shoemaker style. I much preferred watching untapped fashion talent pour their blood sweat and tears into their runway look. The show is promising if you are a lover of fashion design, but lacking in depth and character development. As I AM a lover of fashion, and Tim and Heidi (extra star added for their mere presence!), I will continue to watch as an escape from reality, but keeping my expectations low for any real relatability.

Make Megan a Millionaire
jenniebourne18 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Nothing but excuses for Jonny a talented designer who had a really bad day his models including his boy in a dress looked sad and tired not to mention he couldn't finish without help from Esther. His designs for show 8 were, by the judges' admission nothing new. But once again white privilege wins. The assertion that Megan Smith was influenced by Esther and Johnny was offensive. Her designs were vibrant, size inclusive and dramatic. Let's make Megan a Millionaire.

The judges bring the show down
tremuggle2 April 2020
This is a highly produced version of Project Runway with more established designers. However, the judges (in particular Naomi Campbell and Nicole Richie) are nearly unbearable to watch. They have caddy discussions during the runway show and try to outdo each other with over-the-top insults. Campbell is unrelatable and comes across as an overconfident snob whereas Richie comes across as a wannabe. Neither of them seem competent. The other two judges seem competent but aren't featured as much as Campbell and Richie.

Although it's great to see Klum and Gunn back together and it's fun for there to be more at stake here than on Project Runway, the show is a little too boring. Hopefully it will improve with time.

It's okay.. But the music..is HORRRRRIBLE
tsr7-174-32494217 April 2020
I usually skip to the end... Because a lot of it is just not that interesting. I really can't stand the music. It's horrible. Too sassy and it just never seems to fit with the clothing shown on the runway. Horrible and loud.

Rethink the Judges, please
laggas6 April 2020
Please get Naomi Campbell off of the show! Otherwise there may be potential. I love Project Runway, Tim Gunn and Heidi so much, I'm going to keep watching to see if it gets better.

Tim Gunn back in my living room ... YAY!
monmar-5985430 March 2020
I was so excited, as a project runway fan, to see the original Heidi/Tim combo doing a show with a similar premise. I'm not too too impressed with the designing thus far and less impressed with the fact some people cannot work a sewing machine. (They're better than me but I'm not on the show) These people are supposed to be a leg up from project runway contestants, BUT PR contestants seem to so far blow them out of the water, in design and craftsmanship. I do enjoy Quite a few of these designers. I've also agreed with their decisions on who to send home. SO I do enjoy this show, BUT it's no project runway that's for sure. Also Naomi Campbell ugh. Hollywood at its finest. Laughing at designs, everytime someone says I like it she has to say well I don't. Ok cool we heard u the first time. Heidi is looking amazing, all of her outfits have been beautiful .. but Naomi ... no mm mmm not my cup of tea .. no thank you.

Synergy at it's best
schnb-7308327 April 2020
I grew up watching Project Runway but over the years got bored by it. This show is everything I always wished PR would be!

Pros: The synergy of selling each winning look is brilliant, absolutely love that idea. Having help from seamstresses, and once they weeded out the terrible candidates at the beginning. I also loved Tim and Heidi's adventures, but that might be because I just love their energy together. Joseph Altuzarra had such constructive feedback; I wish they featured him more.

Areas for improvement: Less rude comments from Naomi (she has insightful things to say, but her delivery on some of it is terrible), less over-excitability from Heidi (more authenticity), more coverage of the artists themselves, more pop-up shops, more sales on Amazon (they were always sold out WAY too fast).

Needs work but has improved over the seasons
ymousnona12326 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I am writing this review after watching all 2 seasons back to back! I know. I was hoping that the show would get better after the first season. It doesn't!

Let's begin with the first season. I think there's too much emphasis on Heidi and Tim, especially Heidi. She is so cringe. There are bits where they show Heidi and Tim doing activities around the city, but it didn't add anything to the show. I think a better idea would be to show them going around and showing important stores or places that have inspired fashion around the city.

On that note, I don't think it was fair to have designers come to New York and not do anything there, just to make them fly to Paris. Some of the designers were European, and could have really saved some time. Also, flying from US to France to Japan, then home, then back to the US is really a waste of time, and I could see the designers were tired and jet lagged.

Now, when it comes to all seasons... the format is ridiculous.

The designers should be able to communicate with the seamstresses directly. I thought it was really unfair for those who are not native English speakers. To have to come back and see that your garment is not done... it's just added non sense that they should not be dealing with. Plus, I want to see more of the designers and their creations! I wish I could see more of the designers than the judges.

The runway is god-awful. I could barely see the details of the garments. The comments by the judges are not really that helpful. In some cases, they're even rude and mean girl comments. The music is horrid! The runways were too distracting in some of the episodes and took away from the garments.

FInally, the elimination format is nonsensical. I would prefer that they talk to and give critical feedback to each designer. If that doesn't work, then at least talk to the top and the bottom three. And let them know where they stand!

Don't do the whole "did you change your mind?" It is soooo tacky! For the most part, they've already made the decision, but they want to make the designer beg. Let them have their integrity. It is so insulting.

Lastly, the finales in last two seasons are awful. I do not agree with any of the winners. Those who are extremely creative and the FUTURE of fashion should NOT be in this show. They're not looking for the next glonal brand. They're looking for the next Zara or H&M retail designers. This is a huge BJ to Amazon and a big FU to fashion designers. They don't want creativity. If a good design does win, then they cheap-ify and sell a gross polyester version of it on Amazon. Personally, I wouldn't want that as a designer.

Edit: I am watching the third season, and I just watched Jeremy Scott's tatrum. It was abusive, and really made me sad for these designers. They have done one day challenges back to back to save production costs, but the designers are treated badly because they are exhausted! They have spent so much money in the past on travel, but they can't give at least 2 days to the designers. Jeremy Scott yelled and threw a book while Yannick had to stand there and take it. Tim Gunn looked shaken up, but Heidi did nothign to stop this. Then he has the audacity to say that he did it out of frustration because they care about them. This is disgusting and abusive behaviour.

Edit 2: I am happy with Season 3 finale! I think they finally gave an opportunity to the right designer. He is amazing, and so creative! I wish I could see how his brain works. Giving extra star for this.

They listened.
idearz-429-63817528 March 2020
I must UPDATE my prior review. They listened. Everything I couldn't stand about the show, as per below, has been addressed. Thank you. Enjoy the show.

Talk Fashion vs Talk and Talk and Talk Therapy I can't stand all the lame interviews with a bunch of whiny self absorbed designers. I don't care that your mother died three years ago. Just sew. Don't care that you work in a burger joint. Sew! Sorry, not sorry, you miss your kids. All this talk therapy and no real talk of the clothes. As a Parsons graduate, that's how we learned in the classroom--talking about the work--without all the teary talk. Not even half of them would have even passed Fashion Illustration. $1M? Really?!? Gave it originally three stars ONLY because Tim Gunn is back. I now have to take off one star ONLY because of those ridiculous, self-indulgent movie clips "featuring," I use that word loosely, Tim and Heidi. If you want to see a great fashion comp, WATCH "Next in Fashion" on Netflix!

Promising
alpha-female8029 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a huge fan of this concept with designers competing to be the best one. I also thought Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum were great hosts on Project runway.

I'm writing this review after only seeing 2 episodes, and so far I'm sure that I'll continue watching.

That being said. I don't like this show as much as others I've seen, but it's entertaining enough, and I'm hoping it'll get even better.

Thing I do like about it: -The hosts -The new judges, especially Naomi Campbell. I respect her opinion even on the rare occasions where I don't agree, and she's very direct. I hope she's a regular judge. -The designers. They seem very talented. -The concept of every designer having to make the cut every episode.

Things that could be improved: -Too much emphasis on the travelling and surroundings. It's great to see the designers being inspired, but for generic views of Paris, I could watch any travel show. -The fact that the designers have seamstresses. I enjoy seeing the process, and if you must have seamstresses, they should also be included. (Though I would prefer the designers to have to sew themselves). And if they continue working with seamstresses, they shouldn't communicate through notes and patterns. -There is diversity in the models, but it's not talked about. I appreciate Tim Gunns speaking up for more diversity, and wish that it was talked about even more.

wanted to love
jinshamoore17 April 2020
Something off, can't put my finger on it. Adore Tim but I rather hear him & Heidi talk about fashion history than their silly side adventures. And WHAT IS UP WITH THE MUSIC? The music is insane,, just all over the place tone wise & often completely mismatched to what's going on on the screen. Plus mixed way too loud. Wish I could mute it.

Thoroughly Enjoyed It
donna_huxtable2 April 2020
Top quality professionally produced. Heidi is down to earth and funny and Tim is just wonderful. The idea of showing at different places is great as it gives the watcher insight into the buildings and landmarks of Paris. It's great watching designers work rather than in hotels room and being catty towards one another - as it is in project runway. The only thing I'd like to see is the scoring done differently - a top three and a bottom three as well as the budget for fabrics. Look forward to season 2.

Good show, bad decisions.
jvalentinp25 April 2020
Overall I think this is a good show. The fact that a lot of the people are established is not the problem. The problem is these established people not knowing how to do fundamentals. I get it, it's not like that in the real world but this is a competition.

I gave it a 7 because along the way I saw what might happen and disagreed with it. The one that didn't make the cut at the end should've. Fresh designer with fresh ideas and extremely versatile. Instead they went with commercial and done.

One of the most ridiculous finales I've ever seen
pedrotremacoldirossi26 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I never wrote a review before. Shows with judging are by nature controversial, as people identify with certain contestants and naturally root for them (even though sometimes they're really not the best people who "should win" - considering that the best should win).

Since they the Instagram "Celebrity" Chiara - who never made a comment not echoing another judge's - was brought on the show, judging became ridiculous. Could we please let people with a real-life platform and *actual* knowledge on the subject be claimed as "experts", not someone who liked the winner "because I can buy anything he makes". Right, that's what "copycat" means: Jonny AllSaints Cota. Nothing wrong with that, just don't call it a brand with vision.

There were two true designers on the show (and few others less creative, but very competent, like Megan). Esther and Sanders. The winner Jonny Cota received *several* comments about being banal, repetitive, to lack creativity, and famously bombed the couture episode (the biggest test to any designer's creativity). He took advantage of other participants help in at least two episodes where he wouldn't manage to finish his assignments on time. After paired with Megan, he started to use her white and black patterns.

The 1 month gap before the final - a strange unfair rule in a competition where all designers had the same resources and time to work through the assignments - had Jonny traveling to Indonesia to produce *all* his clothing for the final assignment by a sweatshop. Yes, those places employing children making cents on the dollar for 18 hours/day of work. I understand this supply chain fits Amazon's cheap products quite nicely, but companies at least try to pretend this side of cheap clothes doesn't exist. They don't try to advertise it as something good. "It's a waste free sweatshop". Really, Jonny? The biggest global department stores are always caught up in sweatshop scandals because of lack of control, but yours is propped as something "touristy" because it's in Bali?

This was actually a constant thing about this show: you watch judges trashing a certain candidate (like Jonny), you see him doing poorly on his business pitch (according to the judges), using cheap labor overseas etc. which makes you think: well, someone is going to talk about it, right? They're showing these things to set up a certain outcome. But no; you see these moments for absolutely no reason other than to give you the idea that the entire thing was rigged/unfair. Jonny reminds me of another contestant on Netflix's rival "Next in Fashion", also from LA, identical aesthetic or lack thereof.

All in all, the show had many flaws which are tolerable since it was fairly entertaining. But if what you want from this type of show is: even if it's not perfect, some people are better, these people make it to the top, and some of them win, this is not the show for you.

Well, Esther, Sander and other talented designers who came on the show will surely succeed. Now, we need to keep an eye on the next AllSaints collection to figure out how Jonny's will look like.

Great designers, awful judges, horrible format
aaron_77-688-14190312 April 2020
I want to love this show, I am obsessed with clothes and style and want to see more great designers and incredible outfits.

However, the show is a disaster, it's like they took all the worst bits of Project Runway and added some extra.

The judging panel is appalling, the judges personify the very worst aspects of the fashion industry. Tim Gunn is the only "expert" that emerges with any credibility as a human.

As for the format, I don't even know where to start.

Please sack Heidi and Naomi as a priority, get rid of the other two judges, reformat completely and bring it back for season two.

Five stars out of five for the designers and their clothes, no stars out of five for the rest of it.

This show is trash
Updated review. Original score was a three but now, after season 2 it's a 6. I believe they read out feedback and made changes to the show and for that I'm grateful. I'm happy with season twos winner and would have been just as equally pleased with the runner up.

*************** Bless the designers hearts, it's not their fault this show is terrible. Making the Cut critiques designers but they should have started with critiquing this mess of a show. The editing = terrible. The judges critiques = terrible. The Heidi and Tim clips around the city = terrible. The rules of this show = terrible. The random hiding = terrible. Naomi's demeanor = terrible. Heidi's demeanor = terrible. Everything about this overpriced show = terrible. Tremendously terrible. Throw the whole show away. It's terrible. I.

Smarter, Better version of Project Runway
alyssasieb23 April 2020
I don't understand the bad reviews. I found this to be a much smarter show than "Project Runway" even though I was a fan of that as well. The designers are more talented and the drama/meanness is gone which I love. I've though the runway shows were brilliant. It's fun seeing what such talented people can create without the craziness of ridiculous challenges.

Time for something ' fresh '
theknownames15 August 2021
I don't get why , at this point in project runway history , we aren't seeing competition for only 'plus' size women ( we are all plus comparatively) or just men , or only androgyny idk just why? Some designers clearly had this going forward them here but it was glimpses.

At this point it's very difficult to see much that's new or mind- bending, since everything comes from someplace we have been and seen in the past 100 years . There are moments and yes it's fresh to a contemporary generation but people aren't stupid can't sell me a flapper style dress and tell me it's new . Everything should be sustainable and reusable , everything a buy and a give back imo . I am rating this before the end because I can't let my potential disappointment effect my review. The competition itself is still great and the designers this season are very talented. I also appreciate some of the toned down personality (like judges and guest judges -ditzy doesn't work, mean doesn't either ... so glad they dropped all that ) the judges are great this season and Tim and Heidi going strong.

The music is off putting this season and there is less flair ( easily accommodated in the editing room especially due to covid) the whole vibe just feels a bit thrown together.

A good take of the old formula
marioseleme9 April 2020
Don't get scared because of the bad reviews, it's actually really entertaining and I'm really enjoying this show, Heidi and Tim are doing this show again with a new twist and an amazing setting. The runways are incredible, the participant likable, the creations are nice. Loved Project Runway but after 18 seasons and 7 all stars this is what I needed.

Does the job
PrinceCharmingHere3 September 2022
First, the opening of episode one season one was a disaster. Heidi was a mess and was clearly white girl wasted out of her mind and slurring her words (her and Tim literally did introductions in front of a bar). Tim was there to make sure she didn't tip over. I'm concerned that the older and more matronly Heidi becomes the more erratic her behaviour will get. Anyway, a 1 million dollar prize for the winner? That is impressive. Sugar Daddy Bezos is generous and you can tell no expense was spared in Paris. The production value is modern and sleek. It's much more impressive looking than that other down trodden and dated runway show that lost its way years ago and is apparently still on the air.

Make the Cut doesn't cut it
squidling-9252531 March 2020
I found this very hard to follow... between the rapid camera movement on the runway, the horrible music, weird judging format, and the constant jumps, it just was a mess. The thing that annoyed me most however was the music. I want to focus on what the participants are saying, not on some dude singing about how he wants to fly, etc. Get rid of the vocals, for real.

I felt like there was no actual focus and that really made the show drag for me. Super disappointing since I loved Tim and Heidi on Project Runway.

More depth than project runway.
chuckie_m11 April 2020
I'm not sure why so many people rushed to IMDB to give this a bad rating after episode 1! How can you judge a show after watching one episode? It's like no one even gives anything a chance anymore. This show is great! I love the way they talk to the designers and get a feel for where they're coming from with their designs. I love the locations of the runways. I love Naomi Campbell. The new project runway is a snooze - I'm so glad we have Heidi and Tim together in a better project. I'm giving it a 10 because if these people can come give a ridiculous 3 star rating then I can leave a ridiculous 10 star rating to offset their negativity.

I like it
bekiwij1 October 2022
Season 1-2 was amazing ! Loved it! Except for season 3 ....for some weird reason every contestant is crying every day over something lol I get that we do get emotional over things sometimes but I think they tried to over sell it to the point it became rather annoying. It sort of took away the happy upbeat fun feeling of the show. Well what can I say ... they did the funeral concept the best 😜 I like yanik and he was the strongest of them all. I'm watching it atm and right now Jeanette is crying 😁🙄 AGAIN! I just want these people to show their strong side as well because right now they cry alot and their designs are making me cry a lot 😕

Take all the charming, fun bits you loved about Project Runway and cut them.

Replace them with tedious filler.

You have now made the cut.
