Boring characters and moving story.

Supergirl

Episode 4.05 (3 out of 5 stars).

The episode still follows Kara trying to stop a renegade ex military agent that is bent on following Agent Liberty's plan. The characters are still dull. and boring. James makes some questionable choices that is annoying. It will be interesting to see were it goes next.

Got Chemistry?
djanarae12 November 2018
The answer is no. Having to watch the chemistry-less interaction between Lena Luthor and James Olsen makes watching the show feel like a chore. It's weird because Katie Mcgrath seems to be one of those people who have good easy chemistry with most other characters but with the actor that portrays James? Nope.

Lames needs to go.
gemma4nashville12 November 2018
Supergirl pushed too hard this episode trying to make us like those two together. From the start, James and Lena had no chemistry and this episode only further's that point. Even Brainy and Nia's short interaction was cuter and more electric than any moment between James and Lena. The forced dynamic is gonna torpedo my favorite show :/

James consistently disappoints
ekohnkohn12 November 2018
This episode could have been great, but was so overshadowed by James Olsen's ego and chemistry-less relationship with Lena that I couldn't focus on anything else. He's playing right into Agent Liberty's hands and refuses to listen to the smart women in his life. It's annoying and I wish the show would just focus on Kara, Alex, J'onn, Lena, Nia, Brainy, Manchester Black (where did he go this ep?? his intro was so cool last ep), literally ANYONE else. James is just annoying dead weight at this point, and he's dragging Lena and the show down with him.

Guardian needs to stick to his day job...
jessicaBgriffin12 November 2018
He's so full of himself, and frankly detrimental. James should stick to being a hero at Catco, like Kara does when she knows she can't be Supergirl. This episode showed a good juxtaposition of why Kara is a true hero and why James is a self-absorbed wannabe.

Regarding the end, I find it hard to believe that a character who's had lines about experiencing racism/intolerance in other eps would choose to work with a xenophobe using his platform to spew hate.

Also calling Lena a "co-pilot"??? Sorry, but she's the kind of woman who'd build her own air fleet and fly them all at the same time on her own!

Just ugh
CaMi67212 November 2018
James' character is literally dead weight and they're forcing an uncomfortable relationship between him and Lena. I'm not sure why the show runners are trying to capitalize on them when it's making the show super cringey. The Lena/Brainy friendship is great and I love that they're developing those characters more, but they take two steps forward and then one leap back when they pair the brilliant Lena Luthor with lame James.

Betraying 2 great characters
valyinagyerzsi12 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The episode had some enjoyable moments, Brainy is adorable and charming in ways that Mon-el never was and he is a great addition to the cast, and his interaction with Nia was adorable. Nia is also an amazing character and her relationship with Kara is great, and it's lovely to see such mentorship (which again, completely failed with Mon-el in season 2).

Where the episode fails, and has done so all season and last season too, is James, and his relationship with Lena. I Loved James in season 1. While he had absolutely zero chemistry with Kara, he was a very likable character and was a great example of how someone can be a hero, even if it isn't through superpowers and I loved that they chose a MOC to portray him. Then the whole Guardian thing started and man, they missed their mark. James being Guardian could have worked really well, they could have shown what a human who is not a 'super soldier' like Oliver Queen, can do in a universe full of superpowered individuals, but they didn't and then they visibly have no idea what to do with his character so he continues to waste valuable screentime. Before, he refused to give Lena the benefit of the doubt for having a bad family, but now he does to Agent Liberty even though he is a raging xenophobe. Why?? Also, why would Lena want to be with him?? As with most of its romantic relationships, the show fails to show why they are interested in each other (especially with Lena's side) and instead tells it to us through other characters telling a woman she likes a man (they've done the same with Kara and Mon-el). The whole relationship seems to be pulled out of thin air to give the characters something to do that is not organic at all. They have their female characters say feminist lines ('i stand behind no man' 'i am no damsel in distress, i am supergirl, and i will handle it') and then continue to act the opposite, and let the men in their lives pull BS and then just accept it. This is a disgrace. James says Lena is his co-pilot yet fails to respect her, and by the way, how is it that last season he told Lena to step down because she might have, accidentally, did something to shine negative light on CatCo, yet he has no problem doing it when it's him, and just chases his own ego?

I loved James as the character he used to be, but now he is just a waste of time and I roll my eyes everytime he is o screen, and I am sad to say I'd rather have him leave the show than continue to steal screentime from characters who could use it much better. And as for Lena, she does have some good stories, and it saddens me to see her to be forced into such a silly relationship and being reduced from the BAMF feminist powerhouse she is for the sake of giving James something to do, and for the show to wave a big shining NO HOMO sign because fans are shipping her with Kara. I get that they are not going to go there (a shame, if you ask me) but they could just let the characters be themselves instead of dumping them in relationships with random men who are clearly inferior.

And honestly, the show tackling the xenophobia topic in such a tone-deaf way in today's political climate is is incredibly disappointing. They have a black character helping out and trying to patiently show a dangerous xenophobe he is wrong...Agent Liberty is clearly the equivalent of a white supremacist and James is at his back and call? Really?? God, they really need to start to think these things through.

It's bad todd
Tedebear202012 November 2018
Honestly, somehow finding a way to make a character nearly as intolerable as Mon El seems impossible, but mehcad brooks seems to be fully commited to the job. Granted, the blame should lie on the creaters for creating such a unbearable piece of media with tone deaf episode that I am amazed a fraternity brother did not make up.

Let it go
hunnypunny12 November 2018
You can't force chemistry. James' story is unnecessary, he's a terrible actor, has zero chemistry with any character on the show. Throwing him in the mix just throws off the whole show, he should have been kept a background character. Which is unfortunate, the rest of the cast is wonderful, with great chemistry and interesting story lines.

Lena Luthor deserves better
portalopps12 November 2018
James has consistently been a dissapointment to this show ever since the beginning of season 2. Lena Luthor is one of the smartest women in the show's universe and yet is being portrayed as nothing more than a love interest. Not to mention that James is wholly under-qualified to make Lena happy or to even have an intellectual conversation with her. James and Lena being a couple was a mistake. Fix it.

Mehcad Brooks needs to go - for a long time now..
racer2912 November 2018
For several years I have been saying that Mehcad Brooks needs to go. I was attacked years ago for saying this in various places as many expressed their like for him. Now it is becoming obvious to all that Mehcad Brooks has no acting talent and is always flat on the screen.

He never has had any chemistry with any of the forced female relationships. Frankly he has no chemistry with anybody on the show - male or female. He has always been dead weight for the show from the very beginning.

His casting as Jimmy was a mistake from the beginning and the character of Jimmy is a major mistake on this show. Jimmy is a secondary character.

Second and high billing for Mehcad still in the credits. For this reason and many others I much prefer the old Lois and Clark show with Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher to this Supergirl show. The writing was better, acting better, stories better, and chemistry good.

Just let Supergirl be Super (which has not happened for a year now) and reduce James to a small bit part with his camera. Your Fired.

SERIOUSLY? YOU NEVER LEARN, DO YOU? CANCEL LAMES!
kpr9512 November 2018
Will this show ever stop forcing toxic relationships? James and Lena have NO chemistry! He spent an agonizingly vast time talking rubbish about her only because of her last name, saying she's bad news, blaming her for crimes she didn't commit. And now he suddenly loves her? I call BS! What happened to the powerful, confident Lena Luthor we met at beginning? The one who said she never stood behind a man? She has the most brilliant mind in the world, she owns not one but TWO major companies, she's a woman who is good at heart and yet you're putting her behind a pathetic misogynistic tin foil hero wannabe whose only talent is being a PHOTOGRAPHER! I want girl power! I want FEMALE EMPOWERMENT from this show! That's all we want. Keep your nasty relationships to yourself.

Getting worse every episode
confidential-6789712 November 2018
Supergirl is very similar to dr who in that both current seasons ratings have fallen off a cliff due to the constant virtue signaling and liberal nonsense the writers are jamming down the views throats. Pretty soon arrow will be the only decent arrow verse program still worth watching

My first IMDB review - saturated politics
Jehecht17 November 2018
I live with hearing others political views all day. Whether I agree or disagree, I really don't want to hear them. So I use TV as an escape from that tedium. Supergirl's in your face politics and lecturing has been annoying for a while. Now it's just stupid, banal and badly written. Further, the writers/producers politics have become the storyline in lieu of an actual storyline. If you want to make a point, please try to be a tiny bit subtle about it. When I consider the Real Housewives shows to be better written than a scripted show..... i'm Just saying.

Plain boring
gpriestmdb18 October 2020
At this episode an otherwise good season return to the casual whistle blowing PC standards that they have set.

Shallow story ... below average acting and of course the casual not so subliminal messages on how men are evil. But what I really loved was that salute at the end of the episode. She supposed to be a Marine office (Colonel if I remember correctly). AND SHE SALUTES WITHOUT COVER WITHOUT MILITARY UNIFORM ? THAT WAS A TOTAL ROFL MOMENT.

Supergirl could be a show that is empowering for women but instead they "try so much" that they end up with a caricature.... a parody of what they try to achieve.

Stop Making SuperGirl about james, More about Kara And The Orher Women
Phoenix040713 November 2018
Supergirl should actually be about Kara/SuperGirl and the other women on the show, Alex, Lena, Man, etc. Not about a character writers don't know what to do with, James, so they prop him up and force a relationship with Lena. They have no chemistry and he has talked trash about her until he wanted to sleep with her. He undermines Lena and tells her to step down from her company CatCo, because it would be a conflict of interest for her since she's a Luthor. But he didn't step down from CatCo when he was the wannabe hero vigilante guardian. He was arrested for it yet still was guardian again after Lena put her relationship with her mother on the line for an ass that's selfish, even calling her a copilot. He's a gnat and egotistical insecure dummy that wants to be a "hero". Kara, Alex, Lena, Is, Jonn, even Manchester Black are.
