Feels like a video game cutscene

Total let down. Destroys any sense of nostalgia the moment the parents speak.

So Sad
It's so sad to see a show from the 90s remade with today's technology and views. The babies sounds the same but the adults sound just wrong. Grandpa sounds like he's 25.

It's very dull..
rocketwoods27 May 2021
Love rugrats.. Still have the orange tapes to this day. But, this series just didn't hit and couldn't catch me. The animation is too clunky, the dialogue is nothing like the original and it's just not in tune with the original. Should've just stuck with the OG animation in my opinion, would've attracted more viewers for the nostalgia. Anyway, If it was for "us", then I don't understand.. if it's for the kiddos, then I do. Didn't get pass the first episode. Hopefully, the live action/cgi movie they're doing can overwrite that. All well.

Dark and ugly to look at with needless changes.
adamation932 April 2023
There's no excuse stylistically or technically for the show to look the way it does. I think I saw that maybe it's darker because babies crawl on the ground? Not sure what that has to do with light perception...Recycled plotlines, needlessly changed character traits and voices (where's Tress Macneille for Charlotte?) Just an all around miss. It could have been alright if they just stuck to the original better. There's no need to differentiate yourself. Why be ashamed of your past as one of the most successful Nicktoons of all time?! I don't know what the viewer analytics are, but I hope they stop them doing this to any other beloved shows.

Awful
Michael-63566410 June 2021
Where do I begin? The animation is terrifying, the storyline is awful, and the characters have whole new personalities. This is nothing like the 90's show.

Took a minute to get used to
cledoux-9711928 May 2021
At first I really did not like it. As a huge fan of the original it threw me off when the babies had their original voices, but the adults were voiced my new people. I did eventually get used to it, and after that I was fine. I'm also still not sure how I feel about what they did to grandpa Lou's character, but besides that I loved it and I can't wait for more episodes.

Has the spirit of the original.
elliothumiston30 May 2021
A lot of the reviews seem to be from adults who are fans of the original. As an adult who grew watching the original this doesn't scratch my nostalgic itch. But this show is for KIDS not me. My kids loved it and I enjoyed watching it for them. All the original kids are back. And what made the original great is all there. Grandpa is a weirdo (this time a new age hippie). They go on large scale adventures. Angelica is a bully. Tommy forces Chuckie out of his comfort zone. And Spike protects the babies.

Those saying the animation looks cheap must not have paid attention to the original. The first 3 seasons had the lowest animation budgets of any Nickelodeon show.

This a great kids show and I enjoyed watching it with my kids. I would recommend it with anyone with kids.

So far so good

Looks like the reboot turned out much better than I was initially expecting. Pretty good, I'll be looking forward to the next episodes.

This should be in the horror genre
gameskiller-0768513 September 2021
Absolutely scary and disturbing! I'm so surprised that there's no "horror" section on this title. I'm personally a fan of horror movies and I've watched a lot, nothing frightened me as much as this on. The level of terror and weirdness is unreal, And it supposed to be a kids show?

Disappointed
earthchild-3751630 May 2021
Why does the tv/movie industry keep bring back classics and ruin them??

The adult voices are way off! Especially the grandpa. If you're going to bring back a childhood show make sure you're going to match the voices.

I think this show would be much better with BETTER VOICES!

So many things wrong with this reboot. It's just done poorly and quite frankly it's boring. Kids lost interest really quick.

Terrible
justinrschwarz1 June 2021
While I can live with the CGI and the voices. The rest is a mockery of what this show was. Completely missed the mark. Send this to cancellation.

Who asked for this?

This was an absolute disgrace. Another classic memories ruined with this hash.

The episodes have no charm whatsoever.

Last Words: A babbling Abomination.

An Unnecessary Disaster
rebel519 July 2021
First off, the animation is terrible. The Rugrats should not be in CG animation. It just doesn't work. Second, the voice cast chosen for the adult characters are completely annoying and uninteresting. Third, they're redoing the same storylines that were done thirty years ago. This will go down as one of the most expensive reboot disasters in television history. I went into this with an open mind too.

Enjoyed it
finelylivin30 May 2021
As someone who was born in 91 and grew up on the OG Rugrats I throughly enjoyed this modern day reboot! Between the joke on Gen Z in the first episode, Tommy's talking screwdriver, Betty coming out and hippie Lou I felt they did a great job of keeping everything with the babies the same but evolving the adults in order to make it more relatable to the crowd that grew up watching this show as young children. My six year old enjoyed as well and I plan on rewatching until additional episodes come out. THANK YOU FOR THIS GEM!!

it's fine
phenomynouss18 October 2021
This is not a review overall of the series, but as a reboot of the original. Having grown up watching almost all of Rugrats original, there's a bit of a disturbance here, knowing that the "original" Rugrats not only went through all their adventures but actually grew up and had adventures in middle school in "All Grown Up", only for them to apparently be wiped out by a Matrix-like reset of the cycle, thus having their entire lives ended and started over.

Much like with each new cycle Battlestar Galactica, the actors change, but the roles stay the same. Some of the characters have changed; Jack Riley died in 2016 so they need a new voice for Stu Pickles. Other adult voices were replaced with entirely new actors. Betty has a new voice actor despite the original Kath Soucie still voicing Phil and Lil. Nancy Cartwright had replaced Christine Cavanaugh as Chuckie going all the way back to the last few seasons of the original show, and she does a phenomenal job of sounding almost exactly like her that it's genuinely difficult at times to tell the difference right away.

Basically, all the babies voices are the same, while all the adults' voices are new. Betty and Grandpa Lou probably are the most changed, with her now a single mother and Grandpa now too young to have been a World War 2 veteran, but old enough to be an elderly hippie boomer.

All of this is fine. None of it bothers me and none of it is detrimental to the show at all. The disparity in voices for an extreme long-time viewer is very disconcerting at times, especially with Michael McKean as Grandpa using his normal speaking voice rather than an amped up "old man yelling" type voice. It doesn't seem to fit, but not because it doesn't fit, but because the original engrained in our minds makes it seem not to fit.

The only major complaint I would have in this regard of the voices is the voice actor for Charles Finster doesn't seem to be doing anything with his character. Some of the other voice actors try to adapt the previous voices to try to sound similar to them, while making them their own. Others make them their own. The actor for Chas seems to be doing a half-hearted parody imitation of someone else, with a wildly goofy sound that feels like it belongs in a stale and unfunny SNL sketch parodying voice acting rather than being actual voice acting.

Beyond all those roughly superficial changes, it's basically the same type of Rugrats as the later seasons. Not as good as the first 2-3 seasons, but not substantially worse than the later seasons. I would much rather see the ongoing animated adventures of watching our All Grown Up Rugrats aging further and further and experiencing the bland, monotonous horrors of everyday life growing up with the knowledge and realization that for the first time in at least a century, their ways of lives and standards of living are destined to be worse than those of their parents and grandparents.

How long did they spend on this?
QuadeC20105 June 2021
This is awful. I grew up with the original cartoon show. It was one of my all time favorite shows growing up and even my parents enjoyed it with me. But this reboot of the series is a pitiful excuse of the original show.

The animation is just... off. I don't mind them changing the animation style compared to the original, but it looks cheaply made. The closest thing I can compare it to is a surreal video on YouTube. I enjoy watching those as they're kinda funny but they're bizarre and that's to be expected. When I watch Rugrats, I don't wanna see that kinda animation style. It's a major eyesore.

The voices are terrible. The children still sound like themselves, and that's to be expected because they're the same, but the adults' voices are terrible. They actually sound younger than the kids and I'm wondering how long they spent on this. It's like they took the first few people who offered to do their voices. Chaz's voice and Grandpa Lou's are the absolute worst of anyone on the show. It's laughably bad.

The budget and time spent, or lack thereof, on the reboot of quite possibly the biggest and best of children's shows is a shame. I try not to hand out 1's and 10's in large amounts as I hate to be overly harsh on something someone makes, especially since many projects take time. But I'm convinced this took no time to make. And this I'm absolutely is deserving of a 1 and nothing higher. I cannot believe this even exists.

Please be open minded.
Hi, I'm sure there are a lot of people who are upset with some of the changes and you are completely ok to have them. I just feel like we should be more open minded and think of the bigger picture. This show has the original creators, showrunners and writers along with most of the voice cast. I can tell there's a lot of love and work out into this show and we shouldn't diminish that just because we don't like the new art style or a couple of changes. This show is made with kids in mind, this show will do well with kids. This will also spark a more interest in the brand so it will become even more popular, it will be introduced to a new generation and maybe they will be curious and look up the original to watch. That's what I mean by looking at the bigger picture, this reboot does nothing to the original, if anything it makes it more popular and the brand itself. The reboot itself is good, I'm a fan of the new artstyle, I love 3D animation and so do kids, which is why they probably did it and I'm glad. If they did 2d animation it would probably be a way cheaper version and still not look like classic rugrats. I love how faithful this looks to the original. Just give it a chance and think about the bigger things the show could do instead of just hating. Thank you all for reading, have a nice day.

A Bit More Tolerable Reboot
richiesburgers16 December 2022
Nickelodeon's first smash hit from the 90's has come back to deliver a reboot. It's trailer wasn't half bad and the 3D animation is actually alright.

The changes though can take some time to get used to. Stu is now a gamer, Phil And Lil's mom is LGBT, and Grandpa Lou is just chill, but sadly lost his sassy personality. Susie has the most bizarre with her being around the same age as the original gang instead of being a bit older than them. The latter role went to Kimi. And no Dil Pickles? Bubble Bass is really not gonna like that!

On the bright side, the babies are still likable, Angelica's character is still intact, and the music is a nice replica of the original soundtrack of the show.

The Rugrats reboot is an alright show. At least it's more tolerable than Kamp Koral's negative response.

The CGI is horrible
I managed to catch the preview on TV for this.

It's the same as many cartoons that fail. The animation is way too clunky and just watching 2 seconds of it made me dizzy because the background looks like the blurry Rugrats video games for game cube or Nintendo 64

This style makes the characters look dull. In an actual drawn style, they were shown to be full of life and had emotions

Not every classic drawn animation needs a reboot, nor does it need a CGI reboot. Seriously just show the kids the original and they will like it instead of wasting money to remake something that doesn't need to be remade.

It's the same with Blues Clues. The reboot literally has the same episodes and the original is there and should be watched more so than a pointless money-wasting remake.

I hate the voices.
I hate the grown up voices. All the adults sound different. I don't know why the grandpa was turned into a hippie. It's a major thumbs down for me.

Even Paul Germaine couldn't save this
luketaylor-134482 April 2022
Voice acting for the adults is awful, animation is an eye sore, music is lacklustre like seasons 4 plus and it's just boring to watch. They also made pointless changes like ageing Susie down, turning Betty gay, removing Howard and turning Grandpa Lou into a hippy. I'll just stick to the classic first three seasons.

Pre-School Daze is better
YUCK what is this abomination???? The animation is awful and unlikable. Unlike Preschool Daze. Even though Rugrats Pre-school Daze lasted 4 episodes, it was better than this.

Something made with love for people of all ages.
lefevershome4 June 2021
A triumph for fans of the classic! I have been a fan since I was Tommy's age, and this reboot is definitely a departure, but once you are open to a new continuity you'll find a excellent show.

I just plowed through the first season like a kid in a candy store. At 5 episodes thus far my biggest issue is I'm craving more. A welcome comeback that'll tie in new fans and satisfy old ones who can have a little fun.

People are going to be harsh because its new. However a lot of love is clearly going into this. The animation is detailed and bouncy. The writing is clever, modern and funny. This is above and beyond what kids shows do most of the time. I could not be happier.

UPDATE I've watched each episode released, and can say I still feel just as strong as I did before. This is one of the best kids shows on TV right now. I grew up with the original and see very few true changes that could upset fans. I'm a puritan about my media too, but this is truly a high effort show.

Takes me back to my childhood so far!
G33KEd27 May 2021
For people who remember the original series on Nickelodeon, the new CGI Rugrats reboot is one good Nickelodeon reboot to watch on Paramount Plus!

When I was a little kid, I used to watch a couple of Rugrats VHS tapes, The Rugrats Movie on DVD, and Rugrats Go Wild at a theater.

The original voice actresses, such as EG Daily, Nancy Cartwright, Cree Summer, Cheryl Chase, and Kath Souchie, reprise their roles; but the adults are now voiced by their new voice actors (such as Tommy Dewey, Tony Hale, and more), which are pretty nice; the CGI animation is good; Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh make great return for composing the music since the original series; and the original creators make a great return for the reboot!

Like the 2020 Animaniacs reboot, the new Rugrats reboot will make 90s kids relive the good old days!
