ataylor-533074 September 2019
I had to check it wasn't a comedy. That's how bad it was. Waste of time!

An insanely terrible movie
bachemar23 January 2019
Considering the writer and director has the same last name as the two lead actresses, I'm assuming they are probably his daughters and that this is some sort of vanity project. Since the writer/director is some sort of celebrity chef, though I've never heard of him, I wouldn't be surprised if it was self funded and maybe even filmed in his own house. The acting is subpar on every level from every person in this movie, the script is laughable and sounds like it was written by an alien, and to cap it off, it isn't even creepy or scary in any way. I watched it "free" on Amazon Prime and I felt ripped off.

Definitely in my top ten of all time stinkers.
deloudelouvain4 January 2019
I saw this movie like a month ago but couldn't rate it then because that option was not available yet at that time. And so I've been checking it every day since then as I felt it was my obligation to warn people on how bad this movie is. I've seen thousands of movies so I don't remember them all, but the once you remember are or really good or really bad. Somnium is so bad you wonder how they managed it to make it so terrible. Joseph Ciminera, the writer/director, didn't search too far for his casting as he used his own daughters to play the main characters. The acting was just terrible, close to the worse I've ever seen before. But not only his daughters, the rest of the cast is also awful. I wonder where Joseph Ciminera got those people from? Maybe he went to his local pub and picked a couple randomly promising them a couple beers if they wanted to appear in his movie. Never mind the story, as it doesn't matter with such awful acting. Actually there is absolutely nothing positive about Somnium, not the story, not the acting, not the sound, not the filming, just nothing. Definitely in my top ten of all time stinkers.

so bad, i almost want to see it again
BtzLtd24 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
"six hours later" as the beginning frame of the movie?! six hours after what? i shouldve quit there and just had a laugh, but i couldnt pass up an opportunity to check out this tale. 80% of behind camera staff is credited to one guy, and his production company blip is an absolute direct ripoff of blumhouse. also, he shares a surname with the two stars - this has got to be great. quick pass - twin girls who look like they wanna be in "the ring" can cast supernatural activity into real life from their dreams, chaos ensues. but wait, theres more! just a few nibbles from the first act to give you a taste of what youre in for: when grandpa comes back to his own home after running errands, he rings the doorbell and waits to be let in. very soon after, he does 3 (three!!) of the worst "stage pours" ever committed to film. if youre pouring a drink and then drinking it, liquid should come out of the crystal decanter and into the clear glass. 3 times. also he either has no real lines in the script, or the producer/writer/director does not care that he awkwardly fumbles through the few he has. this is all within the first 15 minutes of "somnium," which im more and more convinced is latin for "asleep at the wheel"(somnium is, in fact, a novel written in 1608, also a brand name for the drug lorazepam). there are terribly choreographed fights, someone dies and clearly continues blinking and breathing, the sfx arent, the list goes on. we do get a "twist" at the end, which only serves as an opportunity for the cast to try out british accents. you gotta see this movie. take notes, i would love to see more reviews. there are so many terrible moments ive already forgotten. this is a true borderline "zero or ten" film

Oh wow, so so so bad
alexythimia16 January 2019
This has to be one of the all time worst films ever made, within 3 minutes i knew this was going to be awful, and it was. Terrible camera work, terrible acting, weak plot. This is just everything you should not do when making a movie. I think the only thing that can be redeemed from this, is to show budding film makers so they know what to avoid when making a movie.

Sets the New Standard
tmccull5216 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
"Somnium" sets the new standard for absolutely awful movies. Direction. Plot. Continuity. Acting. It's all far, far beyond terrible.

The premise is that a grandfather has been saddled with the care of his twin granddaughters, who are possessed of unexplained paranormal powers. Their mother left the girls in Grandpa's care because she couldn't handle them.

Long story short, three burglars break into Grandpa's house. We have Louie, Ricci, and Miles. Louie is the burglar with a heart of gold, while Miles and Ricci are basically scumbags. Upon breaking into the house, Miles jumps Grandpa, and Ricci sucker punches Gramps, knocking him out. Louie intervenes to keep Miles and Ricci from roughing Gramps up more than they already have.

Miles grills Gramps, who gives the burglars the location of the safe in the house, and the combination to the safe. He asks Gramps if anyone else is in the house, and Grandpa lies and says no. While the trio of burglars splits up to loot the house, Miles finds the granddaughters unconscious in bed. Furious that Grandpa lied to him, Miles rushes back to the old man and roughs him.up again. Once more, Louie intervenes.

Louie drags Grandpa into a closet and leaves him there to go and continue searching the house. Ricci shows up and taunts Grandpa, ignoring Grandpa's pleas for his heart medication. Grandpa dies shortly thereafter. It is at this point that the twins enact their revenge upon the burglars. The twins have the power to telepathically enter another person's mind, search through it, and make manifest their worst nightmares and memories.

When I say that the acting is terrible, I'm being kind. Just prior to getting jumped by the burglar, Miles, Grandpa pours himself several drinks. You can clearly see that in two of the supposed four shots that he takes, he tipped the decanter, but never poured anything into the glass before drinking from it.

In a nightmare sequence for Louie, he takes a beating from his mob boss father's henchmen. You can clearly see that the actors are going through the motions. It's ridiculously obvious that they aren't touching Louie whatsoever, even though this is supposed to be a brutal beatdown by half a dozen thugs.

I've seen some terrible, terrible movies, and even ended up liking some of them because they are unintentionally hilarious. "Somnium" doesn't even have unintended comedy going for it. It is atrociously, abominably bad. This may very well be THE worst movie that I have ever seen. It fails on virtually every possible level that a movie can fail on.

A great little indie Horror!
Anmer935 August 2019
This indie flick does a real good job at keeping you guessing, with honest and commited performances, tense set pieces ranging to full on terrifying in moments. There are far worse indie Horrors around so add this one to your watchlist!

Creative Independent Film
JGReviews28 February 2019
Somnium is a story about sisters with supernatural abilities. When 3 burglars break into their house to rob the place, they encounter a lot more than they bargained for. I really appreciated the creativity in this indie! I'd highly recommend this for anyone looking for a good indie horror film!

Genius!
irncxsv26 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I have watched this film twice now... Upon my initial viewing, I did have similar reactions to many of the previous posts: poor acting, ridiculous dialogue, poor production and continuity and sound... BUT, something seemed to congeal with the twist at the end and It left an impression.

Upon reviewing, it seems apparent to me that the ENTIRE story is all a manifestation playing out in the Grandfather's head as the girls "entertain themselves" by utilizing their "special abilities" to torment him. To me, this explains the bad acting AND dialogue; as well as, inconsistencies with the production. The whole story, including the baby sitter and the burglars, are manifestations created as characters to entertain the twins to mess with their invalid Grandfather while they are supposed to be "taking care of him". Think about it... the characters are ALL stereotypes with annoying repetitive cliched "tween" dialogue thrown in... all created by the twins.

With this perspective, everything made sense and the true brilliance of the work became apparent. I once heard a theory that the old sitcom "Green Acres" was supposed to be a dream and that the main character had hit his head while working in the city. When he woke up, he was on a farm with his city sensibilities in a rural context. This "explained" some of the ethereal aspects like a talking pig and a phone located on top of a phone pole. My interpretation is that Somnium is in the same vein... A dream/manifestation of a world created by the twins and their sensibilities for their own amusement/evil pleasure.

The bad acting and dialogue can be seen as a condition manifested in the dream state of the twins. It is evident, that everything is different in reality as the film ends and we realize grandpa is a stroke victim and the characters take on a "British accent". The acting at this point becomes much more emotive and the dialogue becomes relevant and in context. Hence, the bad acting, dialogue and production ALL reinforce a dream condition directed and scripted by young girls, which all changes abruptly when their auntie comes home at the end and the girls promise their Grandfather another "adventurous journey" tomorrow.

Watch the film again, with this perspective, and the "genius' of the work will be evident. The actors that you thought were bad, will now seem skilled in their craft in order to dumb down their portrayals and delivery of the ridiculous repetitive dialogue. The producer/director will seem genius in his use of budget, film, and craft in the unveiling of this disturbing story.

I may be giving this film too much credit and my perspective may be off; however, it is the only explanation that makes sense in this story... other than pure amateurism, with a heavy dose of conviction and vision.

Do not watch at bedtime!
maria-morgunova25 February 2019
This story is about a failed house robbery. It is quite unusual to see how the burglars and the victims changed places. It is a kind of message to bad guys: you never know where revenge will reach you and how it will look like. The story-line is twisted. Cinematography is very creative. If you like horror film, I would recommend it to watch at Halloween.

Not a bad movie
chefjamiefildritt7 December 2019
If your looking for large budgets and over the top special effects then this money isnt for you. On the other hand if your looking for a unique story line than Somnium is pleasing in every sense of the word 'film making'
