Fun, But Don't Expect an 'Open Range'
paradiseimp-3924521 June 2019
Actually liked this film, but you need to drop preconceived expectations that it is a serious western. I definitely felt a chemistry among the actors...it seemed most were actually enjoying their characters. A few good laughs and general entertainment value is what I got out of the film, and frankly, that's what I was looking for when I hit "play".

Spaghetti Western meets Community Theater
redbaron-4135128 August 2019
Some funny parts and some chemistry between the actors; but, schizophrenic plot, stilted dialogue and slow moving 2 hours + run time make this not so great even by B movie standards. Not an entire waste of an evening, as it has some good and funny moments; but, the writer and director should be "Unforgiven"! LOL

Not bad for a modern western
firechap-061994 May 2019
This is no John Wayne or Gary Copper western but not bad the characters where enjoyable the costumes seemed to be close to period and the sets where ok . If your looking for a great story this isint it but if you like a decent shoot em up western with some comic relief this is not a bad movie .

Fun ride in the custom of the spagetti western of the 1970s
iamjamalwhite8 July 2019
This was a good flick, funny and smart. The characters are well drawn. There is some language and a quick flash of nudity but overall a clean movie for the whole family. Story of an accountant looking for his brother, hires some gamblers to help guide him, not happy with what he finds. I'd recommend this one. Best western I've seen in years!

Feels Like a Contract Celebrity Movie9
captbgb26 June 2019
It's an ok couple of hours to spend but don't expect any magic. Reminds me of the type of movie you get when TV actors come together on a network project they sort of have to do to fulfill a contract. Somebody writes a big screen script for three specific celebrities, but they pass on it, so you end up with a quick draw TV production, pun intended. I know that's not the case with Big Kill, it's just that only three actors really seem like they belong in the old west, Lou Diamond Phillips, Jason Patrick, and Danny Trejo, who is completely wasted in a teaser that goes nowhere. In fact, he's not the only character that shows up and then disappears without a payoff. Watching the guys on horseback is painful, and in some of the shots, the paint looks like a pony. Let's just say being in the saddle doesn't look like second nature to most of these riders. It's like taking the cast of Murder She Wrote and giving them parts in Gone Baby Gone, and then not giving them any time to get into character.

Concept is OK: Town goes bad after silver mines flood, gets taken over by hired guns rustling cattle. Of course, one look at the dusty town and sage brush, not a puddle or raindrop to be seen, and, well, you know, what floods? Whole town looks like a Hollywood back lot. And cinematography is not geared to making a visual statement.

Nothing really makes much sense, and characters just seem to do things at the whim of the screenwriter, especially at the end.

All this being said, I wouldn't mind seeing this same cast again in another western, albiet, better script and higher production values.

A pretty cool 2018 B Western. Go with the flow and have some fun.
michaelseither15 March 2019
After reading a number of reviews on IMDB, I hesitated to obtain and watch Big Kill. Since I really like Westerns and they seem to be a dying breed, I threw caution to the wind and decided to watch it anyway. Bottom line: It's a very decent example of the genre, which is a throw back John Ford camera stylish modern western (with some overhead shots Coach couldn't film). It has some problems related to over saturated color, semi-bizarre costumes (over the top) and HD camera style which keeps the homage from ringing too true but it is sui generis and as such, is interesting. I think they carried off their homage well enough that you can enjoy it as an pseudo old fashion, modern filmed western and it deserves an audience. Good actors, fun story, a sense of humor and great shoot-outs. It isn't exactly a classic but it is as good or better than most of these B style westerns in the past few years because it dares to be different but also classic enough to be a genuine western. I definitely recommend it, especially if you are an aficionado of the genre. ie: If you like westerns, in general, you shouldn't miss this stylish update of the classic form.

Well, I enjoyed it...
smcbee-2324923 June 2019
Not too gritty, pretty good body count but not too much gore. A couple short running gags that worked. Lou Diamond Phillips and Danny Trejo? What's not to like. I even liked that the production designer Dawn Ferry had a small uncredited role. It seemed like the cast and crew enjoyed making the film.

Much better than I expected!
conmck-4215717 September 2019
This is a great little western that's just plain entertaining. As previous reviewers have noted, it's got some humor along with the gunfighting. The acting, IMHO, is pretty darned good. All the actors do seem like they're enjoying their parts and they're all committed to making this the best movie possible. I recommend this film.

Not just bad. VERY BAD
roydo4322 June 2019
This is a poorly written poorly directed C western that doesn't deserve to be called a B movie. I take that back, C is too high a rating for this offering. Everything from the casting to soundtrack to stilted dialogue reeks of community theater. Netflix needs content for its vast catalog and this is a prime example of what would have been called direct to video low quality garbage that is showing up more and more there. The acting is BAD. The dialog very very bad. The soundtrack is cheap. The director is very very bad. His close ups and choice of shots are very strange giving the whole movie a very amateurish feel like someone with no directing experience or concept of film making was given a modest budget to put on a show. If you enjoy good movies this won't be a pleasant experience for you.

LABOR OF LOVE...BEAUTIFULLY SHOT...FILLED WITH WIT & ARTISTRY...COLORFUL CHARACTERS

Fun and Engaging Modern Western.

Manages to Mingle a Menagerie of Moments from the Long History of the Genre with Heart-Felt Fan Appeal.

Hoping that the Audience will Hop on Board and Enjoy the Ride.

The Reaction has been Mixed.

The Current Metacritic Score is 4.2.

Down and Dirty Fans of the Western seem to Like it.

The Westerns from the Past Blow in and Out of the Movie Like Tumbleweed.

You Notice then it's Gone. But Other Fleeting Visitors will Show-Up.

This is Part of the Charm.

None of it is Heavy-Handed.

Just an Inducement to Pay Attention while the Plot Unfolds with some Originality.

While Writer-Director-Star, Scott Martin has some Chops of His Own.

When the Two Lead Characters, Gamblers, are Playing Cards and the Camera Slowly Creeps in for an Over the Shoulder Peek, You Hear...

"7's?... No......Go Fish"

It's a Laugh Out Loud Moment that Appears at a Time when the Movie is Flatly an Unambiguous Stating...

"Having Fun Yet?"

That is the Point where You make a Personal Decision to Follow Along or Not.

It's an Underrated New Western that has been Coming in a Slow-Wave.

Testing the Temperature of the Masses to See if the Western Genre is Infectious Again.

Smart and Artistically Fulfilling.

Definitely Worth a Watch.

Really Bad
atomicis18 June 2019
So unnecessarily drawn out! Plot is all over the place, and few characters are believable - let alone relatable. I DID watch the whole thing (because reviews by people who don not aren't valid IMO)... But it was painful. Avoid at all costs

An enjoyable and funny movie
hifrmny16 March 2019
PLEASE pay no attention to the first reviewer here. Watch the movie and decide for yourself whether you enjoyed it or not. I found this movie to be quite good. I am keeping it as will watch again in future.

The movie has several funny parts and I mean I had several lol chuckles throughout watching it. You can't help but laugh at the "Never heard of it" line used frequently. And the one guy during the last shootout that was so fast, you never saw him draw. That was hilarious.

If you do like westerns, at least give this one a chance and you may end up having an enjoyable evening.

Surprisingly enjoyable
marcusgreenwood3 April 2020
I enjoyed this movie! Pace was brisk with a compelling ending. Some of the dialogue could have been better, but the characters were likable. Some great scenery shots that reminded me of good old-fashioned westerns from the likes of John Ford and Anthony Mann. The friendship and comedic aspects of the leading actors worked well. Christopher Sanders was also excellent in the lead role. Absolutely a surprisingly good modern Western movie!

Mediocre
PhillipJarodNelson16 March 2020
It's a western. That pretty much sums it up. The pacing is slow with little plot development along the way, slowly building a very basic, cliche story. Have someone imagine a stereotypical western, jot those notions down, and you've basically got this movie. It's not terrible, but it does absolutely nothing of interest. Drawn-out scenes that seem like they should be for character development or building the plot pretty much boil down to people staring seriously at each other. You've got a spaghetti western town inhabited by a few bad guys, a bunch of hanging out in a saloon, some prostitutes, a hanging, and a 1950s shootout in the street. If you've seen any western, you've already seen this.

A pathetic stupid farce, period.
MovieIQTest11 March 2019
This is one of the worst B Western movies in its worst form. Don't even know how this screenplay got approved into production. Such ridiculousness is beyond my comprehension and only the worst Chinese movies could be matched. Very childish and shallow. This kind of bad Western genre horrible movies only further deteriorated the survival of the public interest for any future Western movies. Besides, any movie with Danny Trejo in it will be definitely a lousy B movie. Danny Trejo is one of the brand names of bad movies. So if you see his name appeared in the cast, just don't bother.

I don't even know how to describe this "Big Kill" farce.

college project quality
jartzh10 July 2019
You can usually tell a decent movie by the first 5 minutes. I know this but I stuck with it . I will never get that 2 hours back. I should have watched Family Feud.

DONOT waste your time. Or watch it just to try to figure out how the reviewers who liked this movie sat thru the entire thing.

A+ B Movie Western
deager22 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Let's not get carried away on this. A very well done B movie Western pure & simple. Rises above the rest because it had good actors enjoying their roles & good chemistry. A rather tired premise made somewhat fresh by the script. A fistful of homages to past westerns from Butch Cassidy & Sundance Kid to My Darling Clementine. Lou Diamond Phillips was having a fun being the heavy & his climactic death scene was spot on perfect! Well directed. Just a lot of fun to watch, the two main leads were great together and adding in the "Accountant" made it 3 amigos. Jason Patric was very good as the heavy and went to his reward laughing all the way.

This movie is so bad I felt compelled to continue to watch to see if it got ant better but alas it did not. Amazing what some actors will do for what must have been modest income at best!

Spaghetti Western
nekengren-28 July 2019
I liked it. Definitely reminds one of the 60's classics. The music reinforces this. The acting is fine and I actually liked the slightly over the top costumes. The cinematography is excellent.

My only complaint is that the movie is a little schizoid. It started so spoofy I was sure where it was headed. It settles into the classic spaghetti western with choreographed shoot outs and music.

A TRULY AWFUL MOVIE
rbcohen-215034 July 2019
With so many movies on Netflix, I will never forgive myself for having chosen this one to watch. Filled with every cliche in the book, lacking in humor or suspense, the writer, director and producer of this production should be forced to attend a refresher course in Moviemaking 101.

A good throwback western
hangmen-0930119 July 2019
While not an Eastwood film, the characters are reminiscent of Butch and Sundance in their partnership and interplay. Probably pretty realistic in how some values of the old west were. Also a bit reminiscent of Wyatt Earp and the OK corral...it's enjoyable if you like a western with a story and gunplay.

I broke my own longstanding rule watching this movie.
richardbrennan-7842931 July 2019
The rule is, never watch any movie with Danny Trejo in it. I give it three stars because it's a really good looking move and the production values are good. The story line is okay, acting is okay. But Silverado or Hondo it ain't

A Wonderful Western
se_mac10 May 2020
This movie is a gem among a lot of amateurishly made films. It's well written, well directed, well casted, and well acted. The subtle humor between the two gambling ne'er-do-well saddle tramps is a treat. Actor/director Scott Martin has a great future in films. I look forward to his next project.

It's a fun movie. Don't overthink it.
e_newman20 September 2019
People need to lighten up. If I had listened to the negative reviews about this movie, I would have missed out on a pretty fun flick. It's not mind blowing. No innovative plot twists or Oscar worthy performances. Everything you'll see in this movie- you've seen somewhere else. But so what. It's a 'man cave' movie, complete with a solid plot, some pretty cool villains, great shootouts, and enough shenanigans to keep you chuckling. Everything doesn't need to be deep and thoughtful. Sometimes a good spaghetti western is the best prescription for a stressful day. And this is just that. A good spaghetti western. In days past- nobody expected spaghetti westerns to win a ton of awards, or be full of great acting. You watched them because they were mindless entertainment, and pretty fun, even though the regurgitated the same story line over, and over, and over again. Thankfully, in 2018, the genre seems to be alive- if not alive and well.

First rate bore fest
jbloch-7295322 August 2019
This movie was right up there with watching paint dry or grass growing. Lou Diamond Phillips was the highlight of this movie. He plays a very no nonsense psychopathic killer with hints of Lee Van Cleef. It is of course tongue in cheek. If this was supposed to come near the spaghetti western genre then they forgot the sauce.
