Ever since Season 1 started, I got the idea that this is a show that enjoys playing around with girl power! The show has provided a variety of strong female characters, even some characters who doesn't necessarily have the big superpowers. Some of the best characters have actually been the one without those big powers, who were simply reliant on good material and a very strong fanbase. However, the show has never really assembled a team of strong women before, so when I heard that they were going to do that in this specific episode, I became very excited. When I saw what characters they were going to include, I became less excited. However, I was not going to let my loathing for some of these characters take away from my anticipation, so I went into the episode with a lot of hope and I have to say that, for the most part, I was very thrilled with what I got from it.
It's funny, because the best character in this entire episode was actually Alex, and she wasn't even a part of the group. Her entire storyline in this episode is her taking care of Ruby, because Samantha is doing something for L-Corp. I have liked Alex's storyline throughout most of this season, and the entire thing about her wanting to have a daughter is something that I have found to be a big step for her. I loved to see her take on that role in this episode, and to see her get a relationship with Ruby that I think is going to factor into upcoming episodes of this season, and maybe even come into play past this season, and into Season 4.
The thing that has also been a big part of Alex's storyline this season, is that she broke up with Maggie early on. I didn't know if I was going to like that approach, because of what was set up in Season 2, but I actually love how they are dealing with it. Alex is not completely over Maggie, which would make sense since she was the first girlfriend she ever had. It wouldn't have made sense to me if they had just completely removed every single trace of Maggie from the storyline. And while she had something to do with past episodes, it seemed like Alex had moved on, but in this episode we realized that she clearly hadn't, and I liked that.
I still have a lot of love for the Reign character. She has been one of the most impressive things about the latest few episodes, and I like how they continue to set her up as a badass antagonist for Supergirl. And in this episode, they did something cool with the character that I didn't think they were going to do so early on. They had a twist implanted in the end to where Samantha is beginning to be aware of the things that she is doing. Not as Reign, but she begins to experience big gaps in her memory, which is something that I imagined they would do later on. However, the fact that it is coming this early on means that they have some big plans with it, which is something that I am looking forward to.
Now, to the things that I didn't like about the episode. I will say that I thought the chemistry between the team members was pretty good, but that didn't make me like the members. I still think that they could have included some better characters than these two stupid ones. Livewire and Psi have been some of the most cringeworthy villains we have up until this point in the show, and bringing them back like this didn't really help them. I also think that what happened to Leslie in this episode, felt so forced that I didn't believe the emotion in that scene. She didn't deserve to have that moment, that some of the heroes who have had that scene in this show, didn't have, when they deserved it even more.
I will also give a big slap the writers, because there were some cringeworthy lines in this episode. I don't know why Leslie has to be so weird all the time, but she calls everyone by these weird names that I don't remember ever calling them in the first place. And Psi had a very weird moment where she started to sing for no reason at all. I hate when writers do these things, because they simply seem to come out of the blue. I do like when characters have charisma or some different personality to them, but when it comes with no warning whatsoever, I don't buy it.
There is also a weak attempt at some social commentary. They try to deal with the concept of cyber-bulying, which is horrible. However, the way they did in this episode, felt like something out of a cartoon. I didn't think that part of the episode was necessary, even though it did give the audience something to talk about until next week's episode.
