I AM a Breaking Bad fan, and I LOVE Better Call Saul.
CajunGentleman25 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Let that sink in for all the haters of this show. I just read a review by "mike david" (The Fearmakers) where he stated:

"If you could never get into television shows before a masterpiece like Breaking Bad (me!) and you prefer cinematic experiences (me!), then BCS will be almost unbearable".

Nice try Mike. It may be unbearable to you (and I think I know why). But you can't conclude that about anyone else but yourself. This user has made a career of writing negative reviews on (just about every other) BCS episode since season 1 - check his account if you don't believe me. It's clear to me this person is so obsessed with one show, it won't allow any little brother steal the spotlight. I'm not saying BCS is as good or better than BB... but this phenomenon is nothing new. And it's obvious here.

BCS in many ways is much better constructed than BB. The only thing people can criticize is that the stakes of the show aren't constant life-or-death... with blood or meth or explosions bombarding every episode. If that is all that can interest you, then you have no depth. (yes, I said it... you have no depth... so there's that). I can only speak for myself, but I don't constantly face death and cartel druglords on a daily basis. But I do struggle to make relationships work. I do struggle with my past with my mother who died when I was nine, and never really felt worthy of any success for most of my life. I do continually battle flaws that define me, and continue to hope that I can make something worthwhile out of myself in a career... which isn't easy in today's world. I do have battles with my siblings and step-siblings which aren't too dissimilar from Jimmy's world. In every sense, BCS is WAYYYY more relatable and real. And honestly, it's better written and directed.

If all you want is entertainment, then mike has a point. BB is more entertaining with it's jumpy pace and high stakes. Which is why I don't believe BCS is better, or even as good overall (to me I don't even compare them, as they shouldn't be). I love this whole universe that Gilligan and Gould invented. And the only people who criticize the show are people who only want every show to be Breaking Bad, verse for verse. This is it's own show. It tells a different tale, and if you just want Breaking Bad, go watch Breaking Bad. I'll be happy to join you! But don't criticize other shows cause it failed to be something it never was supposed to be. If you have depth and are willing to let BCS be it's own show, you will find it enthralling.

And this episode was no exception. Most of the best scenes had one word or less (yes, one pivotal scene literally had 1 word). The writing and directing was incredible. And Odenkirk really killed it with his acting and humor here. No spoilers, but I'm excited to see how all these storylines are coming together. I have a strong feeling that when this whole series ends... it's going to mean so much to the entire BB story. So much of what's in BB is gaining new insight from this season - not just in terms of Jimmy/Saul. I still can't get over how difficult it is to make a show where the end is already fixed... and still make it captivating.

So Mike - this is one of those people you claimed would be bored by BCS. Yet, the opposite is true. I think it's time to stop with the nonsense and accept you just had horrible expectations for the show to begin with, and don't have the depth to care about the realistic themes in this story. It's no fault of BCS... cause in it's own right it's a beautiful masterpiece that stands on its own.

Hilarity Followed by a Pretzel-like Plot Twist
greggwager25 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
How does the plot twist in this one? A big smackeroo on the lips.

I've spent season 4 wondering what rat Kim Wexler smells at Mesa Verde that would send her off for extra public defender work. All along, she's only been sniffing around for herself, smelling what her instincts are telling her. If anything, Mesa Verde is too clean for her (something icky about all those white models). Now she finds herself as another Walter White: she likes the way riffraff makes her feel (especially the aphrodisiac stuff). I didn't see it coming. Neither did Saul.

I've also spent season 4 thinking only Saul's damn goldfish loves him. No, Kim has made up her mind. She's on board all the way with the guy she knows as Jimmy. She knows her guy has a gift others can't see. She loves her scumbag disbarred lawyer.

Saul spent the first part of the episode and the previous episode in despair about his moribund relationship with Kim. Mrs. Nguyen even senses Saul's domestic intranquility and gives him a bottle of Vietnamese hooch-she's not so bad, after all.

It also means that we the viewers must get back to the ruthless world of television reality: Kim is not in Saul's life in Breaking Bad, which means something horrible is about to happen to her (even odds says she won't make it to season 5). Her demise will be the final stage of the rocket that creates the monster Saul.

Aside from providing this most unpredictable and pleasant turn of events, "Coushatta" also ranks up there as one of the funniest episodes of the series (that's saying a lot). What was last week's cliffhanger has Kim devising a bogus letter-writing campaign from Huell's hometown of Coushatta, Louisiana. Saul's trio of film students return to add flair to the scheme. So does hapless Judge Munsinger who redoes a famous scene from Miracle on 34th Street

Underscoring this crucial moment in the story, Mike gives the Germans R & R at a dreary Albuquerque strip bar and must fix things when Kai predictably goes off the deep end. He must also fix Werner for being too free and easy with information to some fellows in another bar.

Nacho is back and mended. Introducing Lalo Salamanca, who now looks over Nacho's shoulder.

Hats off to Gilligan/Gould for milking out and finely honing to perfection all the talent that they have to work with. Posed pictures of Lavell Crawford as Huell helping his community back home will no doubt make for a centerpiece of this actor's scrapbook. When frantic ADA Susan Ericsen has her doubts about the mass of fan mail sent to Judge Munsinger, she calls one of the telephone numbers given in a letter and reaches a Louisiana-accented Hayley Holmes as make-up girl (she explains that she had some improvisation classes), which brings the house down.

I knew this series was going to pay us off big time. It has. I'm only sorry there's only one season (so far) to go, plus the final two episodes of this season which are probably going to be sad parts of the story. Still wouldn't miss them for all of Mrs. Nguyen's hooch in the world.

Perfect episode.
mm-391 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Coushatta has it all. Character development, good story, and solid acting. The viewer is wondering what is Jimmy up to? Much like a 70's Rockford Files episode Jimmy like Jim Rockford is creating a 70's style con on the D A back in New Mexico. Cell phones, letters, and actors create an illusion of public pressure for Jim's cohort to have no jail time. We found out Kim loves Jim's bad side. Mike and Guss discuss some problems which has the viewer guessing what will happen in the final two episodes. Solid acting of Mike with the Germans and comic genius of the Jimmy/Saul character creates acting bliss! Hint hint..... The pay as you phones with the paid actors in a back room is classic comedy. 10 stars. Do not miss this episode.

¡Bienvenido, Lalo Salamanca!
caballero-1927 March 2022
What a piece of episode, I feel that they gave me more than I needed, first Kim and Jimmy's extraordinary plan to free Huell from jail, very funny, intelligent and even charming. Near the end, Jimmy says again that those actions will not happen again, while Jimmy thinks throughout the episode that Kim is upset because he is forcing her to commit a crime (and several more), the reality is that Kim is watching how the world forces a person to commit small crimes to achieve true justice. Here is where the moral fall of both characters is defined.

Another character who is incredible with just one minute on screen is the great Lalo Salamanca. The introduction of this character is iconic and will be forever, everyone already associates Lalo Salamanca as a character who, in his best intentions, is in fact a very charismatic character. Really worrying and exciting about the inclusion of this character, I smell chaos.

Smokin' Episode
Hitchcoc18 March 2020
I thought this was one of THE most creative episodes of any I have seen. The letter writing campaign was hilarious. For those that are wondering why so much effort to save this guy, it's that he and his people did Jimmy a big favor, set him on his way. There is such a thing as loyalty and there is also a practical side to this. As for Kim. The same people, time after time, have it in for Kim Wexler. What's the big deal? She has been by Jimmy's side the whole time. He has strong feelings for her, but at times he betrays her. She has had to take on the financial burden underground whatever. How should she react? Please drop the show if one character is enough to dismiss any enjoyment.

Under The Bus?
darbski25 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
***SPOILERS*** Looks like Kim may have gotten hooked by the fun of being on the edge of right and wrong, even though what she decided to wing out there was clearly illegal. The idae of flooding the D.A.s work product with letters and phone messages, making it seem as if there was going to be a real media mess with attendant costs to pay for, finally overrode the A.D.As sense of duty I still say that she doesn't like the way her "corporate" career is going. For sure it must be boring work, especially when one sees that she's done all the serious ground work. She's pulling back from another "rabbit out of the hat". Good for her on that count, but she's courting danger by getting more deeply involved with Jimmy. Also, it looks like he's completely over the loss of his brother - THAT was fast, even for an adversary.

Nacho now has another creep to deal with, until Tuco shows back up. This is real bad news. Mike's idea about R+R was sound, but Kai again turns out to be a loose nut that should be screwed down tight; probably permanently. One other thing is that I just can't remember an elevator in B+B. I'll have to review my episodes for that. Maybe they could arrange to have Kai blow himself up? So, it looks like Huell may be off the hook for now, but for how long? Can Kim keep herself afloat around Jimmy? I hope that things work out for Kim, and that Jimmy doesn't screw up too badly. No doubt that Nacho MUST inform Gus about the development in their arrangement, and I wonder what the new bad guy will do with Nacho's safe, if anything? Sadly, this will probably be my last entry of reviews, so all I can do is hope for the best for the characters I like... I'm giving this one a 10.

One of the better episodes this season
8512223 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Greetings from Lithuania.

Don't get me wrong, i really like "Better Call Saul", but last episode 7 was one of the weakest if not the most this show has ever pulled. This season 4 in general is good, but they kinda going in circles with the story here - we all know were its all heading into but we do not know the road. So far the road is involving if not particularly amazing. And this episode was one of the best this season, kinda reminded me of i liked this show in a first place. Anyway i will be looking forward for next two remaining episodes in this season.

Nice surprises...this is the BEST season
uwantsun25 September 2018
The cast is just clicking with energy, every scene. I've written a great many books and screenplays, and I find the writing superlative. I usually see it coming. Long before it gets there. I'm impressed. Caught me with new twists, nice setups.

Well done.

This is why this show is flawless
gedikreverdi30 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Jimmy goes to a town in Louisiana to send mails from there. Jimmy and Kim destroyed the district attorney who's prosecuting Huell. Jimmy's plot with the phones with the help of his old filming crew did work so well that at the end Kim kissed him and she wants to do it again although it might ruin them. Mike's German crew screwed up at the strip bar. A man from the Salamanca family came over and Nacho isn't pleased.

Warning: Spoilers
Jimmy and Kim executing an over the top scheme to get a client off is finally a good use of these characters. This is the kind of thing that the show should be about week to week.

Way too much Nacho though. Nothing about that character or these storylines is working.

Hmm...
jdjc00123 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Not really sure what to say about this one.

On one hand, watching the elaborate scheme play out was very entertaining. On the other hand, the way that the district attorney just goes along with it and doesn't question anything doesn't seem plausible.

On one hand, it's nice to see Jimmy show off his signature cunning and that revelation from Kim at the end. On the other, the money and time they spent on the scheme seems entirely excessive for what they are trying to achieve and we aren't really given an explanation as to why Huell is so important to Jimmy.

I appreciate the clever humour in this episode but at the end of the day it all seems to be thrown together a bit clumsily. I really wanted to enjoy this but these glaring plot holes left quite the sour taste in my mouth.

In other news, the Mike storyline appears to be picking up and I guess it will be interesting to see how Nacho deals with yet another new character.

What makes Better Call Saul good
chmodmanual25 June 2020
Yes, it's slower and has it's own pace, but episodes like this are what make this show so good. It's a gradual buildup in the past few episodes, especially the last one was quite slow imo. But then this right here is a 10/10. Great twist, and great humor. What more can you ask? This show keeps it up.

Almost stopped watching, but this episode will bring me back next season
jaytonbye1 October 2018
I was getting bored. I liked the first 3 seasons, but season 4 has been slow, I had decided I'd be done after this one... Sometimes you've gotta wait for the punchline, and boy did this episode deliver. Hilarious, I now remember why I loved this show. This guy wrote breaking bad, of course anything he writes will be great, how could I have forgotten!

See it again after "Plan and Execution"
dirty_chords26 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The masterful use of the "untraceable cellphone" concept is enough to make this one of the best episodes of season 4. That said, I dare you to see this episode after having watched Plan and Execution from the final season. It is only then that you will realize Coushatta's true brilliance. This is the point where Kim admits her desire to play an essential part in Saul's schemes. For both of them, it's still fun and games. Then Lalo appears, and you don't have a clue who that guy is or how important he will become to the story. In reality, this ruthless Salamanca nephew is the character who will expose the tragic repercussions of Kim and Jimmy's "innocent" schemes. And his arrival makes this episode a masterpiece in the way it foreshadows Kim and Saul's fall from grace. Just wait and see.

Sydney Opera House
parisromero-369232 January 2023
The Sydney Opera House was built by a Danish engineer, not a German one.

I didn't see (or hear) anything that indicated that Werner Zeigler's family had immigrated from Denmark. His accent is soft, but not Danish.

Legos are a Danish product - to give you an idea of Danish engineering.

I am disappointed that the history of the Sydney Opera House wasn't checked for accuracy. If they made up a fictional building, I wouldn't have noticed.

I have over 300 required characters to complete this review, however the information that I'm providing does not require any more details than what I've stated.

This was a really nice episode, nothing particularly suspenseful about it, but something really ominous emerging in the Kim/Nacho/Mike storylines, especially knowing we're near the end of the season now. Jimmy's plan smacks of genius once again and the law stuff is spot on.

Coushatta
lassegalsgaard7 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Despite my immense love for this show and the season overall, the difference has surely been felt in comparison to the show's previous seasons. It's not that it's worse in quality or anything, but taking away Jimmy's law degree doesn't necessarily help the show when one of its best qualities was the great relationship he had with his clients and the stunts he would pull to get what he wanted. So it felt a bit like it was taking its time to find the spirit that the previous seasons had, while still telling a fun story that utilized these characters in the best way it possibly could. However, we're now in a timeline where Jimmy is about to get his law degree back, and I was expecting the show to highlight that in a big fashion, and after the events of the previous episode, it was clear that they were going to pull out all the stops for this one. What comes next is a scheme that is so out-there, that no one would ever question its validity or accuse it of being an act of fraud, but because Jimmy is the person he is, it's not even a question of being able to pull it off. And it happens in the framework of an episode that brilliantly pulls off the scheme of the century, while also setting the stage for what is going to be a big portion of episodes, especially with the arrival of a very specific foil for all of our characters.

The entertainment factor on this show has always been top-notch, but to frame an entire episode around gaslighting a district attorney's office into believing that a small town in Louisiana sees Huell as their guardian angel may just have been the peak that I didn't know the show was gearing towards. From start-to-finish, that proved to be a joke that I thought would seize to be funny at some point but never did. From the corny website to the amazingly convoluted phone scheme, this may have been the show's brightest hour when it comes to its often understated, yet brilliant comedy.

What comes of that is a completely different Kim as well. As to where she was apprehensive towards Jimmy's methods beforehand, it seems like she's finally starting to divert into the same direction that he is, especially after her surprising comments at the end of the episode. This is surely what will plant the seed of their downfall as a couple, which is going to be heartbreaking; but it is nevertheless a brilliant piece of character development that shows us that none of these characters are free from the ties that bind and the surroundings they find themselves in.

It's also starting to fall apart for Mike and the construction crew. Things are slipping and the work is getting sloppier, which leads to a fun night out at a strip club. However, there are other things that arise and we start to see that what looked like a perfectly planned project is not going to go ahead without some kind of gaffe in the road. The writing was especially good in those moments and what came to the screen was a clear sense of longing from the German workers, which speaks to Mike who still deeply misses his son.

However, the episode's biggest moment came with the masterful introduction of someone who is definitely going to wreck havoc for these characters. In the form of Lalo Salamanca, Tony Dalton makes his charismatic debut, giving us a character that is totally different from any other Salamanca we have seen this far, but clearly carries that same psychopathic tendency under his eyes. His relationship with Nacho is already starting out on rocky grounds, and with knowing what's happening later, this introduction packs such a bigger punch and is all the more brilliant when you watch it on that great little rewatch.

"Coushatta" is a great episode of "Better Call Saul" and the perfect beginning to the end of this amazing season, giving us a peak hour of television. The episode has some of the best humor that the show has ever had; some of the best moments of character development; and an introduction for the ages.

Pushing credibility
dierregi5 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I am in a minority here, but I find it very hard to believe that the intricate Coushatta plot would work IRL. First, it involves way too many variables and second it seems a disproportionate effort to save an almost irrelevant character from a few months of jail.

So far Kim seemed a reasonable, professional woman with a few wild moments, then suddenly and just when her relationship with Jim is deteriorating beyond salvation, she decides to take such a huge risk.

Finally, I was a bit disgusted by Jim/Kim approach to the situation: for them it was just a game to win at all costs, without any regard for the law - let alone justice. Surely not a problem for Jim, but even him should occasionally calculate the time and money spent recklessly to achieve very little of substance. Just puzzling behaviour for me.

Luckily the rest of the plot is moving along nicely with the Germans and the new Salamanca boy, who will definitely turn out worse than Hector.
