Fuuny, Cheesy and Satirical

I've seen this movie 4 times now, I always come back to it time and time again, it's short enough but doesn't feel like it zips by. The character's are well acted, even if they are a bit 1 dimensional and stereotypical.

Actually pretty good!
laurenhavingfun7 May 2020
I went into this movie expecting a good laugh, but I was actually very taken aback by how much I liked this movie. The use of common tropes was hilarious and somewhat relatable to teens today. I even somewhat enjoyed a lot of the music.

Not bad
mgaman17 October 2019
It's not the best movie ever, but it's definitely one of the only good musicals in existence. The music is good and it makes sense that the characters would be singing because they are in bands. There aren't any large group numbers where everyone knows the words for some reason. It's pretty much a perfect movie in that way. I only gave it a 7 based on my own personal scale. 7 means I like the movie but it's not something that I'd watch it over and over again. It's more of a once in a while kind of movie. That being said, I've seen it 4 times.

A Hyperbole of Emo's vs Christians at School
GranitePolishedCountertops11 February 2018
I mean, it's not the best movie ever, but it's pretty relatable. I go to a college in the US and, while we don't have a bunch of emos sulking around (this isn't 2006), we do have Christians. They don't sing or wear long skirts, but they do hand out flyers EVERYDAY, and if you're sitting alone in the cafeteria minding your own business trying to get some homework done, Jesus' disciples will come ask you to go to bible study. Even if you say "honestly, I'm not that interested" they will continue pestering you, asking you if you want some leftover baked goods. No, Timothy, Sarah, I don't want your fucking mini-cupcakes, I want to study for my botany test. Kindly remove yourself from my personal bubble.

Unique but dissatisfying.
mohamedmassoud-7147025 February 2018
EMO: THE MUSICAL- 58% What a nice idea of showing teenage drama between an Emo group and a faithful Christian one. It was also quite funny with certain stereotypes of Religious and Emo people. I felt like some characters were not casted properly, the songs were not jaw-dropping, and the story could have ended on a stronger note. Story wise and execution: 25/35 Acting: 11/25 Camera Work: 12/20 Sound: 10/20

Absolutely terrible
joshkupshik3 October 2018
I watched this movie on a plane as options were very limited. But this is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The emos never felt like real emos as they seemed to actually enjoy things. Trinity and Ethans love was the worst thing I have ever seen. After talking one time they immediately loved each other. It should have been so easy for Ethan to avoid her but he kept going to the library with her. The lyrics were terrible in most of the songs. The only reasonable song in the whole movie was infect me now. The voices of the characters was shocking and I don't know how they were castes. Ethan was a very dislikable character who didn't represent Emos properly at all. Most of the characters were stupid and should have seen most of the future events coming. Wouldn't recommend this to anyone, waste of time.

Perpetuating Depression & Repression of Self
jwiesman-2061119 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed that the movie was "Emo's" as compared to "Christian's"... In minutes, however, I came to the educated assumption that the movie was very much Emo's v Christians. Within an hour, the movie shaped to be very much that.

By the end, people were forced to compromise their beliefs to fit in with the other, and I though these compromises to be completely uneducated and dis-inclusive of the other party. Christian's were demonised through the treatment of the gay character, then further by the fact the emo's were in-compassionate to the emotions of the main character, his love character, and the non-antagonsided Christian's of the group. They were all pitted against each other, with the lead antagonist of the Emo's going to jail. Then, by the Christian leader who impregnated a member and was so in denial, they he lead her to believe her pregnancy to be immaculate.

It felt like an unnecessary plotting between two groups, when instead, it could have been the opposite. I feel as though the movie was made to plot against Christian's, when instead it could have fostered inclusiveness and pathed the way for gays, Christian's and non-believer's to be together.

Over all, it was about the triumph of the side group of believers -- I think it should have been about the unity of all... God bless the story line and the characters, I just don't think it had to outlaw the strongest Emo and Christian characters to make the point they did. They really aren't about the opposing ends of the spectrum the film had people believed in by the end.

To conclude, Emo's are not depressed non-believers who will do anything to stop people from believing and practicing their faith. People in youth groups will also not corrupt their faith, or even force others into it -- youth groups are often about to coming to terms with ones faith in a secular world without compromising the values of oneself, or pushing those onto another through the confines of bible study, or whatever. I just wish this film had been more real to the identities of many in mind.

Christian's rock! Emo's rule! Both are completely different takes on life that shouldn't be belittled to allow the other to thrive. Each are entitled to their beliefs and practices, and to collide and have members to correlated and faction with both -- I don't believe that in real life, this friction would truly occur. And if it does, that it is not representative enough to spore a movie that places the two at such a juxtaposition. God bless, and may Satan agree with me.

Love y'all, and hope you find my rating agreeable to some degree. Sorry it's so long My drunken self couldn't find a better way to say this!

P.s. I was asked if my review contained spoilers and I answered no. If you read this , and were truly shocked that this was the approach the movie took after the first five minutes... I'm sorry. I just hope you're able to enjoy the next hour and a half unbiasedly and make your own comment. Let me know how you felt! Love y'all!

Xoxo. <3

I honestly didn't expect to like this as much as I did. It's wacky and hilarious but also has a lot of heart. Plus the music is really catchy!

Faith-based or not?
When I ran across this movie, I was concerned that it might be faith-based, but I decided to give it a chance anyway. Now that I've watched it, I regret giving it that chance. It turns out that Emo The Musical is faith-based, just not in a traditional way. So I recommend passing on this title unless faith-based movies are your thing.

It's like Mean Girls but with Emos
MatthewswoodPro19 November 2017
This movie is such a hidden gem. The acting is good, the songs are catchy enough without being cheesy, the dialogue is quick and the story is clever enough to make it new. It's like Mean Girls but with Emos – you don't have to be a mean girl or Emo to like it. I gave it top marks.

Christianity for teenagers
dskywalker028 February 2021
It wasn't a masterpiece, but this is a feel-good teenage drama that might be seen as controversial - as everything that includes religion certainly is. It presents a sweet story with a dark sense of humour and I particularly like the message it tries to send: people don't have to be one thing and it takes courage to be who you are, but it's totally worth it.

Offensively bad.
ethancolebennett27 February 2023
The positive reviews, especially the ones saying this is fun for the whole family, are probably people that worked on the movie.

The acting is painful. The use of self harm as a joke is just disappointing. The music is exhausting. It doesn't do anything very well at all. The movie doesn't take itself seriously yet is so unfunny and grueling to watch. There are no nods to actual emo culture. And you could probably guess everything that happens after like 20 minutes of watching.

The actor that plays Ethan just looks so goofy and fake the whole time - he is not selling this weird boomer stereotype of an emo at all. Don't get me wrong though, nobody could ever have been good for this role because the script is cursed.

The worst movie I've ever seen
weareawesome-545254 January 2021
Honestly, everything in this movie is so BAD First of all, the "emos" aren't emo at all - did the producers even GOOGLE the word emo before they made this movie?? You could have put in at least a LITTLE BIT more effort for the characters to look more alternative - besides the bad eyeliner they're all wearing. The stereotypes on both sides are absolutely terrible; I don't know if that was supposed to be that way and just funny, but IF so, it certainly wasn't. I hate that every emo is portrayed as someone who worships satan or is an atheist at least, and DESPISES everything about christians. That is absolutely not the case, the emo subculture is about accepting people, as are the christian beliefs (to an extent). Also, the depression and suicide stereotypes are really harmful and offensive; "Depression is selfish - take serotonin"??? "Show the scars"???? "I woke up depressed this morning and it felt amazing"???? This movie portrays a serious mental illness as something "funny" that emos HAVE to have in order to be emo, and that's the only way you can be emo in the first place, hating everyone and everything (which, again, is not actually the case, and also not an accurate representation of depression) I just think it's not funny at all to make a joke of something this serious, and to feed into stereotypes like these. There is so much more to say about the plot which didn't quite make sense at all, the weird and unsatisfying ending, the REALLY bad lyrics in all of the songs in this movie, but I'll just leave it at this now. To conclude: i would absolutely not recommend this

Excellent!
jimhbi14 August 2016
Funny and important film every high school kid and parent should watch. Great pace, great music.

Really enjoyed it.

Fantastic production quality and attention to detail.

Great cast.

Excellent editing kept the story moving and enhanced the comedy.

Another great aspect is the universal theme. This isn't an Australian movie, it's a world movie that could play anywhere and get the same reaction.

Not just for teens. Anyone who enjoys good storytelling will thoroughly enjoy this film.

Really enjoyable Aussie movie with catchy songs
bilson100119 November 2017
My niece was watching this and I saw it over her shoulder and went out and hired it myself. I laughed so many times with my partner and we hardly ever laugh in movies. It's got important ideas for young people but also for older people like myself – these kind of stories never get old. It's smart enough for adults, and kids will like it without necessarily picking up on the dark stuff. Watch it alone, with your kids, let your teens watch it, it'll make you happy.

Surprisingly good
tdngamr19 April 2019
I really enjoyed this movie although I actually expected not to. It really reminds me of the emo part of my life with genuine moments and a coherent story. The songs were also great. One thing I didn't like is that it pushed the agenda that nobody's really emo and actually just faking but other than that, a great film.

A lighthearted, funny, campy movie.
sarahjeanne-7073619 February 2019
Emo the musical is not oscar worthy by any means, and not necessarily descriptive of emos or Christians. Despite this, it is so genuinely enjoyable to watch. The characters are compelling, the songs are good, and the joke are funny. what more could you want?

The HO(ly) and the (d)EMO(n)
zabletanotovna5 May 2020
A fun movie full of great one-liners. It has wasted potential in a few ways, but nonetheless, it is just perfect for:
  • a night with friends - get some holy communion and wine and enjoy!
  • netflix and chill - alternatively, a threesome with God
  • waking up your long forgotten angst ridden emo soul

Seriously though - it is not to be taken seriously. It is exaggarated, the acting and the dialogues are often limp, but sometimes, that is all one desires from a movie.
