Circle (2015)
A dirty mirror reflecting society
Circle (2015) is an existential conversational film - or at least it tries to be.
Compared to other movies shot in one room or in one place which emphasize dialogue (12 Angry Men) or other horror-ish movies placing a bunch of characters in traps and borderline situations (The Cube, The Platform), it is not all that well shot and the dialogues are not all that well written.
Nothing that happens doesn't affect anything - there is basically no build-up. The main focus is placed on sociological themes directly expressed in dialogues. There is no mystery and very little tension.
The movie tries very hard to reflect modern society - but this reflection is very foggy and sloppy.
Maksimum przyjemnosci (2014)
A silly reality of naive pensioners
The documentary is somewhat sad and silly, as it is very, very real. It shows the harsh reality of the naive elderly and the peddlers who take advantage of them. You cant help but laugh at some of the absurdities these old ladies believe. Nonetheless, you can see where they are coming from - the fear of getting old and ill is omnipresent in their lives.
They are the types of pensioners I personally cannot sympathize with. This film portrays them with little subjective judgment - it is up to the viewer to create their own opinion about these ocurrences and people. In conclusion, it is quite fun and pretty well made.
Divergent (2014)
The book was...better?
This movie raises one difficult question - and that is, whether the book version or its adaptation was worse. It is comparable to Twilight, albeit the dystopic environment made the plot a bit more interesting - that is, of course, until you start actually thinking about it. This is mostly the book's fault, as it is not particularly well written.
The movie itself is hard to rate, as it bring almost nothing new or innovative. The cinematography and the acting are basic to say at best.
It also has its good points - for example, former teens can see how much they have matured since liking this in their youth.
Bronenosets Potyomkin (1925)
Stillness and movement in a soviet propaganda
Eisenstein truly is a master of timeless visuals, greatly combining movement and stillness in his work. He uses both close-ups and long distance shots, quick cuts and long shots, the pacing is also great - the movie has a sort of a rhytm which lets you wonder but not long enough for you to get bored. It flows like water which often connects the still and the moving objects depicted.
The story is strongly biased and might be marked as propaganda. Hence, the movie is appreciated for its form - and rightfully so.
Loving Vincent (2017)
Dont let this one go/Van Gogh
The visuals are undeniably perfect and original. I find it hard to say anything else about this movie - simply because everything else seems kind of neglected. Despite that, this movie should definitely be appreciated for its magnificent craftsmanship.
Emo: The Musical (2016)
The HO(ly) and the (d)EMO(n)
A fun movie full of great one-liners. It has wasted potential in a few ways, but nonetheless, it is just perfect for:
- a night with friends - get some holy communion and wine and enjoy!
- netflix and chill - alternatively, a threesome with God
- waking up your long forgotten angst ridden emo soul
Seriously though - it is not to be taken seriously. It is exaggarated, the acting and the dialogues are often limp, but sometimes, that is all one desires from a movie.
Too Hot to Handle (2020)
Binge the cringe
It is a step-up from Love Island...which is not much, to be honest. It is to be watched when you are completely hungover and only have 3 brain cells available - just then will you not sense the narrator trying to act superior towards people which were specifically chosen for their high charisma and low intelligence. Just then, you will be okay with someone endlessly judging people which you have an inner feeling deserve to be judged, and just then, you will feel total superiority over other human beings - whether the contestants, the narrator or the other watchers (because obviously, there must be people genuinely enjoying this and you are the only superior being watching this sarcastically).
By trying to defy the laws of other basic reality shows, the creators removed all the drama by the second episode and made it just boring enough that you can watch it with your brain turned off and still feel that you manage to catch up to everything that is happening!
Le diable probablement (1977)
French nihilism
A wonderful piece of philosophy, this movie portrays the story of a boy named Charles. It uses both film language and words to express his nihilistic thoughts. The atmosphere is grim and often stylised - some scenes are even seemingly theatrical. The story itself is quite simple and I felt that it was not that emphasised, compared to the dialogues and cinematography. It serves this movie and its message well though - Charles' story doesn't matter, nor does anyone else's. What is really timeless, are thoughts and ideas.
Wild (2014)
Wild? More like Mild
It definitely is a movie with an interesting premise and an interesting opening scene. Needless to say, it fails to follow up to any possible expectations:
- The dialogues are laughable many times.
- The concept of hiking is probably so boring to the director he had to fill the movie up with overly dramatic scenes.
- The cuts are often chaotic.
Poustet draka (2019)
Wonderful
A wonderful short film with unique animation and style which is nicely intertwined with the story!
Curb Your Enthusiasm (2000)
Larry David and his peculiar obsessions
Live, laugh, love? More like cringe, laugh and relate.
Larry David, as you might find, is a very interesting man. He is petty about the smallest and most usual things - and if you are a fan of Seinfeld, you will have no problem thinking of at least five.
He very much launders his Seinfeld ideas, which is not at all a bad thing. Both are worth watching and especially comparing - the format of a sitcom vs a TV show, the budget, the characters, etc. There are some very strong paralells.
In this show, his talent for truthful depictions of everyday situations is strongly demonstrated.
In conclusion, the humor is great - and if you would like to see what would happen if you acted on your thoughts every single time, Larry and his show have all the answers.
Box of Moonlight (1996)
Kramer takes a roadtrip
As slow-paced as this movie is, it has a very chill vibe and a good sense of humor.
I find the main character similar to Kramer from Seinfeld, so if anyone wants to imagine what his roadtrip would look like, this is it.
It is generally a very chill movie - not too bad, not too good.
