Expect a B horror movie
sweetlilsoprano12 September 2018
The movie started strong with good music and cinematography and jokes that were funny and explained the world they live pretty well, chance acting was just bad and feel the movie could have been better. The last half really felt like a B horror movie and loses fuel in the comedy which is kinda expected. Don't go into this thinking it's an instant classic. But 100% worth a watch if you like B horror comedies

Disappointing
RTJ4-Pls12 September 2018
I'm a fan of the occasional schlocky B-movie, provided it's fun/funny, doesn't matter if it's intentional or unintentional. I knew this movie wasn't gonna be scary, but I did expect to get some laughs out of it, which I unfortunately didn't. It's a mercifully short movie at 82 mins, and yet it felt longer than its runtime.

The cast had some promising names, most of whom were wasted. Zazie Beetz is technically the lead in the movie, but she was criminally under-utilized. Hannibal Buress and the Stranger Things guy barely appeared in the movie. Chris Parnell tried a little. Chance cannot act at all. However, Paul Scheer gave the best performance in the movie, wish the movie had more of him.

I did like the setting of the movie though. A small town with humans coexisting with ghosts as an actual, official part of its population, people going around driving cars and wearing clothes from the 80s but using some technology (like laptops) from the present. It's a shame though, they could've done more with this setting and made a genuinely exciting and fun movie.

Paul Scheer's performance and the movie's setting were mostly the only things I enjoyed about the movie, and they're the reason I'm even giving it a 4/10.

All over the place...
littlemankazoo13 September 2018
What an strangely so-so, oddly-conceived, painfully mixed bag this film is...

"Slice" is the strange story of Small Town, USA...which also happens to harbor various monsters in it, such as ghosts, witches and werewolves. It also runs primarily off of food delivery services, specifically a tiny little pizza place that may very well be the gates to Hell.

...See, from that log line alone, one would be HOOKED to see what goes down in this film, no?...

"Slice" is the writing and directorial debut of Austin Vesely, who previously directed music videos, and also the acting debut of Chance The Rapper, who has worked with Vesely before (And, to be quite honest, is in this film so little it's a wonder why he gets top billing...). While I want to believe this was a concept the two of them dreamed-up one strange night, I cannot be totally sure.

What I CAN be totally sure of is how much this film works and doesn't work is completely inconsistent, which is truly a shame because there's plenty of things I really enjoyed here...and plenty of things that were absolutely dreadful.

"Slice" fancies itself very much in the same threads of a 80's B-movie run amok. Much of the film is very tongue-in-cheek, the world is played for laughs quite often, and the horror is downplayed often to show how ridiculous the story is getting and keeps borrowing strands of other lore to incorporate and stack the strangeness.

In this case, the screenplay is the one to blame, and the screenplay in its content is hardly lacking in quality. Plenty of monster movie lore is touched-up and taken-from to plant the seeds of an interesting world this film can take place in, and for a long while the tone and world really did mesh and created a fun little world to run around in.

The issue becomes clear about halfway through the film, however; the film's script lands about as often as a shotgun hits a rifle target. That's to say, it is ALL OVER the place, scattershot, throws every bullet at every angle, and rarely hits its bulls-eye.

The script feels cobbled-together, constantly trying to balance about five different sub-plots in a run-time that barely qualifies as a feature-length film (82 minutes? Come on now...). Various characters are established and then never seen again, or are woefully underutilized (You cast Joe Keery and Hannibal Burress and use them for 2-3 scenes MAX? C'mon now...).

Add-in that the humor sometimes hits, sometimes does not. There are big laughs in here, but at other times, the script or the actors can't seem to stick the landing and thus creates giant joke bombs where the film truly needs them most. There was clearly a FUNNY script here, but either the talent or revisions let it down.

Speaking of revisions...Good gravy, was the climax of this film ever hacked-apart and cobbled-together. It feels so patchwork and unfinished in how swift they simply try to end the film, I almost wonder if they simply did not have anything left in the budget to complete it. The cinematography was poor, the editing was poor, the makeup and effects were poor...Everything was just noticeably bad, and not something that should've been in a film that (Presumably) was slated for a theatrical release.

The concept also feels very much wasted in such a short film that never delivers on the promise of the premise. We get these opening moments where we are introduced to a world where humans, ghosts and other supernatural creatures co-exist...yet there's not much fun had with that concept beyond a few jokes and the climax, which simply falls flat on its face. An opportunity was missed with a concept this insane and destined to be fun, and it seems only half the fun was had with the idea.

For all things negative that I have to say...there do exist some bright spots to this otherwise disappointing and confusing venture.

The cinematography can actually be quite good at times, particularly when lighting is played with. It almost achieves its desired effect of an 80's B-level schlock film, something akin to 'The Monster Squad' if it were made in 2018. While in some moments the film looks like a TV sitcom, in rare cases I can really admire what work went into the staging.

The score is also nothing to shrug at, as its use of Synth somewhat works in its favor as another 80's callback. Clearly there was inspiration here, and it mostly works in the film itself. If it had made itself more prevalent, perhaps the score could've saved some more face.

I also can't help but touch-upon the premise again and the world this film "tries" to create, despite its minimal effort. It really is an oddly FUN, weird world it builds for us early on. Much as little is ever developed with it, I really would've loved to see a better writer and a better director and a bigger budget tackle it.

But in the end...this film is a mess. A mess of good things, but a mess of bad things just as well. A great score, great cinematography and a strangely interesting concept are counteracted by a poor script, a terrible climax, and technical aspects that seem just as inconsistent as this entire film seems to be.

For me, I almost dare to give this film extra points because I actually enjoyed some parts of it enough to say I didn't "Hate" it...but at the same time, I know I can't in good conscious recommend it.

It's an ambitious, poorly-executed, disappointing, slightly-interesting mixed bag, for me...

Gave it a 2 for Effort

Im not hard to please when it comes to movies but i can confidently tell you this movie is trash and should be in the bin. Terrible acting, tried to be funny but failed, story line is so cliche and dumb. I thought to myself before seeing this movie "it cant be that bad" and it was that bad.

It could have been a great film
zombiechan14 September 2018
I've never seen Chris Parnell in a movie before, so that was interesting...

This movie had some fantastic ideas and creativity, yet it was unorganized and poorly written. There were too many characters for the story it was trying to tell in 82 minutes. It was poorly paced and felt like it should have taken some more times with certain characters.

The dialogue also was pretty bad at times with some dumb jokes that just don't work for me. I can't even remember any quotes besides "Wait, wait. So you're telling me that my pizza place is built on a gateway to hell?"

Besides all the flaws in this film, I can still say I enjoyed it. You can tell it had a creative idea and Austin Vesely seemed very passionate about this project. I would recommend if you're in a mood to watch an 80s like B movie. I just wished this film was better because I love the idea and the world. It could have been a great film.

(Also want to add that I am happy I didn't drive to Milwaukee to see this film in a theater on September 10th. I almost did that.)

Gave me what i expected and wanted out of a b-rate horror comedy
jcstrauss-4642316 September 2018
So some of the performances are iffy and some of the dialogue isn't the best, but this is a damn funny and entertaining midnight horror comedy that you can watch with friends. Chance is pretty good for an acting debut and zazie beetz is good as usual. Paul Sheer steals the show and is easily the best part of the movie. Austin Vesely has some really great shots in here and does a good job directing this very unique cult classic. I came in expecting to laugh and to gave fun and dammit thats what i did!

Stale Pizza
torrascotia17 September 2018
This is a comedy horror somewhat in the same vein as Buffy or Ghosted but on a much lower budget. The plot is concerned with a series of murders of pizza delivery drivers, a rogue werewolf and a coven of witches. What will draw people to this movie is the cast, which includes quite a few talented actors. However overall this is a disappointing movie experience. The main issues are that this is simply not a well made movie, it doesn't hold your attention and despite some of the talent involved, they simply cant turn this into a satisfying experience as the script and production are so poor. I don't have an issue with low budget movies, just low budget movies which fail to entertain. Many of the flaws with the movie could have been forgiven if it was actually funny, but the comedy attempts fall flat. If you fancy some pizza delivery comedy try Fat Pizza instead which was also low budget but has a much healthier topping of full fat comedy.

"GET OUT OF HERE YOU WITCH!"
afrocut2 January 2019
Hands down the worst movie I've seen in 2018. It honestly fails on every front . Dialogue, acting, mystery , jokes , pacing and plot are completely terrible and fall flat in almost every moment ... well , except for when Paul Sheer goes way over board on the line that heads this review . But that took an hour and 19 minutes to get to. Things as simple as plot twists and the "who done its" are literally shown to you multiple times before there reveals making the entire thing pointless. The main joke of the entire thing is never funny and has been done better in low budget indie films from the early 2000s . I haven't turned off a movie in some time , but this one almost got me there. The only thing keeping me from giving it a 1 is its quality lighting and camera work. Theres nothing more odd or upsetting than a terrible movie that looks good . It's like a trick on the senses. Pass on this and save yourself the boredom .

Ignore the negative reviews.

If you go into this expecting a serious movie you will be disappointed. This movie knows what it is and its a fun watch. I've watched it a few times and still get a kick out of it. Fun horror movie that doesn't take itself seriously.

garbage movie
MrBojangles123422 September 2018
The writers didn't care, the actors didn't care, no one cared. why should i care?

no story, no plot, nonsense front to back. snippets of maybe something.... which fizzled.

the worst type of movie. where there's money, intent, star power, and yet.... total, complete, utter garbage.

camera man held it straight, editing wasn't terrible.

A Pitifully Poor 🍕Pizzeria Plot that Peters Out
knightox20 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I have admit this film 🎞 first got my attention because it mentioned there was a werewolf 🐺 in it. I should have known early on when they mentioned 40,000 ghosts 👻 walking casually among the public in the bordering city 🌃 this wasn't going to be a very scary movie 🎥. Hopefully the comedy would be entertaining enough. WRONG. It was about as funny as starring at a sick pig 🐖. The directors later introduced some asinine witches but this just made the whole thing even more ridiculous. The werewolf's makeup was the worst I've seen in years, slightly better than the acting though. I don't think the people who made this were taking it very seriously because it's not a B movie. It's more like a D- or F. And finally some scenes may cause you to lose your appetite 🤢 for pizza 🍕. Yeah, I gave it 2/10 stars simply because the actors kept straight faces throughout it.

ANNOYING
wizard-in-crocs20 September 2018
ANNOYING is the only word that comes to my mind after watching Slice. It's boring, unfunny and acted so badly. The ending looks like the final battle in Ghostbuster(2016), this is not a compliment. The only good thing about this movie is Zazie Beetz.

I'm Not Sure What They Were Going For, There Was Just Enough Here to Avoid Disaster
CANpatbuck366423 August 2021
I caught Slice because of Paul Scheer promoting it on How Did This Get Made, otherwise this movie would have passed me by. I kind of watched this movie scratching my head in confusion, it seems like the tone they were aiming for was schlockey late night horror/comedy and despite there being little scary or funny in Slice, the CGI, the makeup and the animated intro supports that theory. Its alright that we didn't get huge action pieces or expensive makeup jobs but you need a tighter script or something stronger to drive the plot ahead. There's plenty of weird stuff in the script that should be more interesting than it is when it plays out.

I can't say the plot of Slice had me fixated or on the edge of my seat but I wouldn't call it predictable. A movie centred around werewolves, witches, ghosts should command your attention and all I can say was that I was at least a little interested about where we'd finish up.

With the quality of the visual effects on display in Slice, I'm surprised the production was able to afford this calibre of actors and actresses. Zazie Beetz is an up and comer why was this project attractive to her? She's fine in this but other than wearing the punk rock getup and tackling urban fantasy, she's completely wasted here. Chance was better than I expected him to be but he's also used sparsely. Chris Parnell and Paul Scheer were surprising inclusions, both are solid in their supporting parts (or as much as they can be). Marilyn Dodds Frank is laying it on pretty thick as Vera but the movie needed more energy anyway. Rae Gray was fine as Sadie and Will Brill and Tim Decker probably got the most laughs of the movie as bumbling cops Mike and Bradley.

My reviews are usually longer but Slice, like its short run time, can be summarized pretty quickly. I did laugh a few times, the movie is so bizarre that I couldn't help but get some enjoyment out of it. I wanted to like Slice more than I did but there was just enough to enjoy to eke out a passing grade. My rating for Slice would be somewhere between 5-6 out of 10 but I'll round up to a 6. I still wouldn't recommend Slice, it was made for a very niche audience and I doubt you'll fall into it.

What a Turkey this is...
Codacious20 May 2019
I expected B- Horror Comedy from the reviews and got C- Horror instead. Not once did I crack a smile, smirk, or snide. An up comer "Lakin Valdez" had the best role and lines, Zazie Beetz and Chance gave a good performance but didn't have any good lines. Paul Scheer and Chris Parnell must have taken this just to get a credit as they know a bad part when they see it. I'll assume Parnell threw the painting bit in to get a laugh, but it was a miss. Scheer is good at schlock comedy, but added nothing to make this watchable. It's not that the acting is bad, it's just a bad script that the actors didn't improvise/improve on. I suggest watching the trailer instead as it has the best 2 minutes this movie has to give.

Fun Time!
eschiermeister12 October 2018
This movie is a unique and fun time. I'd equate it to your typical B-movies. There's a ton of great humor in the beginning. It does lull a bit in the middle though. The music is great and the world here is interesting. If you're looking for a more mellow movie for Halloween, this is a good pick.

the last Digiorno pizza slice of a film
melindasterne6 December 2018
This film feels fun in the beginning if you're a fan of Welcome to Night Vale and just binge watched the first season of Stranger Things and need something to fill the gaping hole season two couldn't fill. Unfortunately by the end you'll feel just as unfulfilled as when you started. It's a bummer because it has some of my favorites in it's cast: Paul Scheer, Chris Parnell, and a cameo by Hannibal Buress. As well as rising stars Zazie Beetz, Chance the Rapper, Rae Gray, and Joe Keery (who are adorable). It did have enough 80's synth throwback to satiate a very basic lizard brain part of my soul. Visually it was ok, there were a lot of great color themes that would have been cool if they carried into the rest of the film. I was pretty bummed and confused the ghosts didn't have any level of opacity/special effects to them. I feel like we're so far past the bad theater makeup for arts sake. I have to agree there wasn't any real humor or scares which made for a really flat film. It had so much potential and some really great ingredients but just never made it above basic unfortunately. I definitely wouldn't not recommend this film. But would advise to set the tone with a Digiorno pizza and eat some cannabis food before watching.

Godspeed, you Chinese food werewolf.
rorymarsh0023 September 2018
'Slice' is not an easy film to define, and has remained an enigma leading up to its release. Having been on the A24 slate for years, this Chance the Rapper vehicle was finally released on home video only. The lack of a theatrical run may ring alarm bells for many, however, this was likely more due to the very specific audience the film accommodates, rather than the quality of the film itself. 'Slice' is, at its core, a modern B-movie, however, unlike other recent additions to this peculiar sub-genre like 'Brawl in Cell Block 99', it lacks overall direction, both tonally, and within the narrative itself. The primary issue with 'Slice' is its personality crisis, sometimes satirising similar films of yester-year, sometimes attempting to imitate them. As a result, the film is tonally muddled, juggling hit-or-miss comedy and gratuitous yet ridiculous prosthetics with a plot lacking a main protagonist, resulting in a directionless and offbeat, yet entertaining film. Zazie Beetz and Chance the Rapper bring their characters to life with charismatic performances, both crafting characters that at once appear iconic. It is a great shame, therefore, that they are criminally underused and replaced by blander characters that lack motivation and purely exist to drive the plot. Whilst these aforementioned protagonists elevate the film significantly, injecting pace and humour, their absence only emphasises a plot that is grinding to a halt, supported by weaker characters that would otherwise be characteurs in films of a similar pedigree. This is a bold first feature for director Austin Vesely, who may mature into a heavyweight genre filmmaker, however, his moment may take some time to actually come. 'Slice' could have very well been a modern B-movie that finds enjoyment in mocking its influences with its effortlessly cool cast of characters and surreal narrative, however, its confusion over what it wants to be, and misguided tonal direction, prevent it from becoming anything more than a trashy yet enjoyable B-movie. 'Slice' is silly fun that will find cult audiences, even if that collective be a slim one.

This was mediocre...
paul_haakonsen12 June 2019
When I sat down to watch the 2018 movie "Slice" by director and writer Austin Vesely I must admit that I had absolutely no idea what to expect. So I entered the movie with a blank slate, so to speak.

Did "Slice" manage to fill the slate with a memorable and enjoyable movie experience? Hardly so. This movie was, at best, mediocre.

It felt like the movie wanted to accomplish more than it managed to deliver, at the hands of writer and director Austin Vesely. As such, then the movie was being dragged down by an ambition set way too high.

The acting in the movie was adequate, taking into consideration the type of movie that this is. But at times it felt like even the actors were not really buying into the script and storyline.

Writer and director Austin Vesely attempts to build a colorful and vivid world, wherein humans live side by side with the likes of ghosts, witches and werewolves. While the idea is indeed interesting in itself, it wasn't really portrayed all that well on the screen. Especially since the ghost had such horrible make-up applied to them that even a blind man would have a hard time buying into.

"Slice" is the type of movie that you watch once, if you manage to get through it entirely that first time, and then never to watch it again. The movie just doesn't have much of any appeal, much less anything to provide a foundation for a second viewing.

This is a movie that is more stylish than good
kevin_robbins10 November 2022
Slice (2018) is a movie that I finally watched on Tubi. The storyline follows a town that recently had a pizza boy brutally murdered. As the police, town and pizza shop uncover clues on who the murderer is it becomes apparent the pizza shop may be haunted and there may be werewolves in town.

This movie is written and directed by Austin Vesely in hit directorial debut and stars Zazie Beetz (Joker), Chance the Rapper (Space Jam: A New Legacy), Rae Gray (Fear the Walking Dead), Joe Kerry (Stranger Things) and Y'lan Noel (Insecure).

There is so much to like about this movie...and somehow it still ends up being not good. The animation during the opening credits was cool. The first kill and throat slash was worthwhile. It was cool seeing Joe Kerry from Stranger Things in this. The settings and attire are well done as is the lighting and cinematography. Unfortunately after the first kill there really aren't any more good kill scenes. The makeup and "monsters" look cheesy and the script is painful at times. The ending was okay and the use of CGI did not work for me.

Overall, this is a movie that tries to be more stylish than good. I would score this a 4.5/10 and only recommend watching it if nothing better is available.

Can't write funny dialogue so lifts it from other films.
necromancer-mcgill6 March 2021
I'm sure these are winking 'references' to these films but it's cheap. There's other films in this genre which do so much better with the B movie horror comedy thing. It's well made and polished but just lacks any real charm. It's not got a long runtime though, which makes it just bearable. The decent setting can't hold up a whole movie on it's own. A swing and a miss.

Not bad in a good way
NotHardAs_ActuallyNails31 December 2020
Imagine finding out you're bad at the thing you've always taken pride in being good at. Whoever directed this is a professional. Now they know their limits.

This movie is awful. The pacing is terrible. The plot is muddled. Who is the protagonist? Is it a revenge story or about a reluctant hero? Neither both aren't fleshed out in any real way.

It's not a fun, silly movie the critics didn't get it's just not well made. Too bad because I wanted Children's Hospital of Horror
