Take a shot everytime the kid says "Daddy..."
inexplicable00722 May 2019
You'll be super tossed. If you like painful boring films where people speak in riddles and no one bothers to question why everyone is speaking in riddles with the other majority of the film is the father stumbling around coonfused to his daughter's cries.......so much pain and the ending was not a good payofff at all and predictable. So I suffered.....like you suffered through my rant but seriously Im trying to save you your precious time

I would just skip this movie if I were you.
deloudelouvain1 January 2019
In Extremis is categorized in the genre horror and thriller so it was purely based on that that I watched it. Did I get to see a horror or a thriller? Absolutely not, so for that alone I was already disappointed. Add on that that the first fifty minutes of the movie are pretty lame, where you wonder what is going on, and that not in the mysterious way but in the boring way, and you get a below average movie. The second part made up for it a little bit but still it was not good enough. The acting was okay for some and bad for others. Lisa Gormley was bad, so I looked her up, and of course she played in a soap series, Home and Away in this case. So I was not really surprised why I thought she was a low ranked actress. The kid Anna played by Isabelle Allen was also poor acting. Sometimes you have really young actors that are good, but Isabelle Allen isn't one of them. Just skip this movie and watch something else.

Longer than it has to be
lolly673 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I've seen reviews saying that people don't understand the bad reviews and that you have to "think" to be able to "get" this movie. In my opinion you only have to "get" that the scene showing the room with everything covered in white sheets with exception of part of the piano, is the room of a dead child. Which you " get" because the first scene is going down a hospital corridor while the father is speaking of talking to a man in a small room (don't remember exact dialogue). I believe it was drawn out for way too long. The ending was good, because I had wondered why his hand was in his pocket and not bleeding when he was walking back to the house. I could only give it a four, because the premise was good but all we needed was the beginning and ending of the movie.

A genuinely bad movie
the_sarcasm_fairy31 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie isn't deep. It isn't well written or well acted. These other reviewers either watched a different movie, or they've got the same complex as the writer/director where they have a need to feel like they're artsy and totally "get it" more than other people.

The first 45 or so minutes of this movie are just the same 3 lines of dialogue over and over, written in different ways. "What's happening?" "You already know" "Anna?!"

Then, FINALLY, something tries to happen, and then that just turns into the same thing. Nothing happens, all the characters speak in crossword clues, the story drags its feet and gets nowhere. It's one of the most frustrating movies I've ever watched. This honestly could have been a 10 minute YouTube short; there was not nearly enough content for a feature length film.

The twist is also not foreshadowed or hinted at, it's basically told straight to you. My wife called "dead kid, cancer" in the first 5 minutes. They wait until the very end to drop that like it's going to be some kind of surprise.

Some movies hold onto mysteries very well, to intrigue you and make you want to see more. This is absolutely not that way. The characters talk a lot but none of them really say anything, and it is so annoying. It's like when you wrote a paper in high school and came up a page short of the minimum, so you just add in a bunch of filler that has no substance at all. This entire movie is that last page of filler.

The only reason this gets a 3 and not a 1 is because there's an excellent accidental "That's what she said" joke near the end. About halfway through, I told my wife it would be amazing if the last line of dialogue made it so the entire awful movie was an elaborate joke. Sadly, it was not the very last line of dialogue, but it was close so I'm going to count it and give two stars.

The only horror aspect to this movie is that you get to experience the sensation of torture as you slog through this trash. The acting isn't good, the writing isn't good, the story isn't good. And it's not that I "don't get it" either. This doesn't have some deep symbolism or metaphors or whatever artsy crap people think they're special for getting. They're hamfisted, grade school level symbols that are being shoved right in your face. I'd say they were basically explained to you, but the characters explain them while still managing to say absolutely nothing. It's kind of amazing how they can do that.

Truly just not well made.

This movie tries WAY too hard.
tbland-9275117 February 2021
All of the cryptic nonsense in this film absolutely wreaks of trying too hard. The "big reveal" at the end doesn't make up for a movie with a glacial pace that is completely predictable. It's only saving grace is decent cinematography and decent acting. The plot is a dud. If you like boring movies where nothing makes sense but everything is still predictable, go for it. This is the worst movie I've seen this year and I was happy to be validated by its poor rating.

Obvious, like a brick in brick in a birthday cake
yowilwasup8 August 2020
10 mins in.... If the description hadn't used the word 'horror' there would have been little doubt where this movie was headed. 20 mins in... no doubt where it's going....right where you thought it was. "Daddy did someone take the script out of the garbage can at Acme's Discount Scripts?" Yes honey. Yes they did.

I liked it
Dave_douell15 December 2018
People have different tastes in movies and a lot of people won't like this movie. I really enjoyed it, unlike most movies, it kept me guessing. Most movies I know what's going to happen within the first twenty minutes of the movie. The acting was superb! I don't want to spoil the movie but after I figured out most of what was going on, it was a very emotional movie for me. You have to watch this when there are no distractions and pay attention to everything said and I think you will really be glad you watched.

The look and feel of the movie is nice
corryville-735777 September 2020
The story needs more creativity.... The look of the movie is nice.... This could have really been a good movie, if a master mind was involved in the writing process.... I don't like this movie.....

It is a good film
mjsreg29 January 2019
I am sure this film is not to everyone's taste, especially if expecting a flash bang Hollywood movie that needs no concentration.

For me, that was the charm. I had no idea what to expect, but I was pleased I watched it.

It is a bit of a slow burn, and you need to think about what is going on and pay attention. I really didn't know which way the story was going - which was it's charm.

When the end of the film happened it was a surprise. In retrospect I could see all the clues were there throughout the film.

The acting was superb, as was the production. This film deserves a much higher rating that given here.

Huh?
petkanasw21 January 2021
Has the feel that they made this up as they went along, saying whatever came to mind, staging what they felt like doing, and care not a whit about whether it made sense. If you like making your own meaning out of this abstract mess, have at it!

Very good movie
vegicat18 December 2018
If you are looking for a typical "horror" movie, this is not the film for you. It is moody and dark, and you have to pay attention. It's more of a psychological thriller/suspense/drama. It gave me the same vibe as "Jacob's Ladder".

The acting is wonderful. Beautiful cinematography as well. As another reviewer said, you have to pay attention to the details.

Definitely dark but the message was a little more of an uplifting reminder
cmmedland3 February 2020
It's not a bad movie, but only the VERY end has anything uplifting. It's a bit hard to watch just due to the mood and even with just a minute or two left, I pondered the purpose in making such a dark film. It was also slightly predictable, but I did not predict the final message at the end it made me appreciate the film quite a bit more for what it really was.

I was not disappointed.
ljgreener8 July 2019
I am a fan of David O'Hara's. He is a fabulous actor. I would love to see him in more movies. The prior reviews did help me to prepare for the movie. Those who left poor reviews obviously do not understand this type of movie.

Turned it off for awful writing and boredom
Cindy-Siders22 October 2020
Actually, we sat on the remote by accident and it got switched off about 30 mins in of this guys poorly written self-loathing narrative. We decided to ditch it and go watch Tremors instead. Very over dramatic and cryptic for no reason. 2 stars for scenery.

Sure Why not?
kirstenlynch23 August 2020
Not a thriller. Not horror. More of a drama/deep sadness. Lots of questions throughout most of the movie. Slow moving. Kind of daunting. Ever see What Dreams May Come with Robin Williams? Kind of. Mind bender like that. One funny moment, especially if you like the American T.V. show, The Office. (That's what she said.)

This only horrifying thing about this movie is that it wastes two hours of your time. It sucks.

Dramatic exploration of the psychology of grief and trauma
Kyle_Eason1 February 2020
I can listen to David O'Hara all day. His Scottish brogue bespeaks character. I was impressed by the story, though, admittedly, it's a bit slow to develop. Another reviewer mentions a "Jacob's Ladder" feel - and I would agree. It's worth watching for fans of psychological dramas or thrillers, that's for certain. True students of film will appreciate O'Hara's performance, which carries the film. Use of color throughout the film adds to the story. I was brought to a few tears in the end, but left feeling redeemed and grateful that I'm still alive and kicking. For those who have lost a child, this could very well be too much to bear unless you're ready to face your grief and sadness head on. Please be in a good space before watching alone. Overall, this film was a worthy effort by a number of professionals, and deserves its place in the film record.

Fragile and broken

"We are all very fragile."

I liked the filming but it seemed very slow and was difficult to keep watching without dozing off. The imagery was cool. I appreciated the story. I'm not sure it portrayed just how scary this type of experience can be.

Garbage. Do not waste your time. You will be bored to tears; trust me. IMDB, you must do something about these fake reviews. There is no way this movie would rate above a 2; no way. Suggestion; have a panel assign a max rating to every movie. Throw out every review that exceeds that number. You can leave the review, but remove the number. This would give the rest of us an accurate rating.

A symbol of courage
blackmamba9997124 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I rather found this film to be a unique example on how our minds work during a catastrophic loss. David O' Hara portrayed such an individual as a successful father who lost a daughter to cancer. Imagine... if you will that you are someone who questions their sanity or fantasizes that you are crazy and everything else in between is nothing more than a fabricated lie. This is what O' hara saw when he realizes that the world is tumbling down brick by brick.

To lose a love of your life to a disease that has no mercy in the victim. To see strange images of despair surrounding you like - - a cancer. Such as the dark figure who represents death or the grim reaper waiting patiently for O' Hara's soul to come to him but in turn has Anna his daughter try to convince Alex, (O' Hara) that he's not done yet on our mortal plane.

I found this film a rather enjoyable watch because of the elements blended in that makes us who we are. Bleak pictures, to grim landscapes that represent our conscious thoughts in endless turmoil. To see a man broken into pieces because of the loss of his daughter, and a faithful wife who stood beside him the entire time.

Steve Stone captured each shot brilliantly using dark tones, sinister shadows and mind bending scenes using light, slithering darkness swallowing up Alex in the hallway. The music also set the stage for building up the climax with visceral scratching effects and white noise to encroach a person's psyche.

It is something we all have gone through. Heavy loss due to inoperable diseases to ailments without vaccines or cures. Losing a family member is hard, but to lose them slowly as they deal with the constant pain is absolute torture in itself, and David O' Hara displayed that perfectly in his role as Alex. I highly recommend this film for two reasons... One, it helps those deal with the pain of loss, and... Two the idea that life after death is final, is not always accurate.

Incredible movie for such a low budget. The capture shots were excellent, locations were spot on, and hidden innuendos inside the film was a nice touch too. Enjoy this movie.

Give this guy a budget to write SILENT HILL
marky-2904525 September 2020
Although the buildup takes a while, the payoff is emotional and good. The writer/director is obviously a fan of SILENT HILL, as his movie combines elements of the first 3 Silent Hill games. Give this man a budget, a crew and additional writers, and let him write the next movie.

Ok I think we can all agree that talking in codes is a fairly interesting way to start a movie. But my god this entire wasted effort was utterly ridiculous. It was a parody of itself.

Genre Confused
wilhelmsauers5 September 2020
This movie is not a horror movie. A semi-thriller, perhaps, but not a horror. It might be easier to categorize segments of the movie instead, starting with drama, then moving to disaster movie, then psychological thriller, and then ending with tear jerking drama, with a somewhat ambiguous message at the end. Each segment comes together in an attempt to tell a story about loss, in all its stages, using a lot of heavy subject matter in the process. Ultimately, while I can't really say I enjoyed it, I also can't recommend avoiding it either, as it may speak to everyone differently. I do however, feel it bears repeating that this is not a horror movie. It may be grouped with horror movies, but does not belong with them, so look elsewhere for frights.
