Um...What Did I Just Watch?
TheMovieDoctorful23 January 2019
One of my most anticipated films of 2019 is sadly a dud. The film starts off with modern U.S Marines wearing World War II helmets and that really sets the tone for the rest of the film.

World building is exceptionally vague with hardly anything explained and character development is pathetically rushed and paper thin. Even with extensive voiceover, I could barely tell you what the plot of this film even was, when it took place or why the characters act the way they do. Worse still, I didn't care too. It feels less like a film than it does a collection of poorly strung together scenes tied around Hayden Christensen's impressively acted, but narratively useless, voiceover. I was getting Slender Man (2018) flashbacks watching this at points and that's not a good thing. You can really tell how much of a nightmare this was to make and large portions of the movie just seem straight out missing. Often times, characters will shift behavior and personality seemingly between scenes. Hayden's Tove begins the film as a physically vulnerable, washed up bum and then becomes a cold, efficient, martial arts mastering badass a scene later. Occasional exposition will be thrown in to give us at least a bit of context, but hardly anything that makes this any easier to follow or any more compelling from a story standpoint.

It's a shame, because there's a lot to like here underneath all the incompetence. Hayden Christensen's performance is genuinely award worthy, probably his best since Shattered Glass. I was shocked by the range of his vocal delivery, it's easily the most he's ever showcased, and his facial acting is equally nuanced. It's one of those performances like Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady or Leonardo DiCaprio in J. Edgar, where his acting clearly belonged in a far better movie.

Harvey Keitel isn't half bad either. He's at a stage in his career where acting is pretty much optional for him, but he genuinely seems to be trying here. He believes in this film and he believes in this character and he definitely commands the charisma and presence of a "dark messiah"-esque character.

The overall aesthetic of the film is excellent as well. The visual direction (mostly) looks better than most theatrical wide releases, really capturing the dark, Gothic feel of a Gotham City or Blade Runner-style LA. The musical score is one of my favorites in recent memory as well, evoking a very moody, ominous and intense tone.

Overall, The Last Man is a mess. It has plenty of positive elements, but they can't fix a broken and confused (If not outright incoherent) story and character development. It's worth a onetime watch just to appreciate Rodrigo H. Vila's inspired direction and the excellent lead performances, but it's not worth much else. I was frustrated with The Last Man and ultimately let down by it.

it tries to be real
eduardo-g-melguizo29 September 2018
The best thing I can say about it is that it tries to be. Not "good", but "something". The film essentially meanders between apocalyptic sci-fi, noir (à la Mute), some kind of parable about climate change and traces of post-Vietnam war movies (PTSD). It just doesn't do too well in any of those fronts, choosing instead to bury down in itself with the promise of meaning. If you hate voice over, or simply think that it is a poor substitute for good storytelling (or storyshowing), and a crutch for emotional exposition, just stay aeay from this dissapointing film.

No, not even if you are a Harvey Keitel fan, or like the genre. It will not add much to your life.

Put Your Loyalties Aside
Astaroth2224 October 2019
I've noticed that some who review here vote based upon their "loyalties" to certain actors, genre, or other specifics or topics within the movie. For example, I like Harvey Keitel, but I'm not going to automatically give a movie like this a fake rating because of that. Or the fact that I tend to enjoy Sci-Fi, but again, simply because it happens to qualify under that category I cannot pretend this movie was something it is not. This movie proves both: Great actors can star in bad movies, and certain topics we all "wish" worked out can fail miserably. I really wish more people would start rating based upon reality - and put their loyalties aside.

a disappointing mess
natcalgary25 January 2019
Actors were not bad so I have to chalk it up to bad writing and dialog. My gf actually walked in and asked why they are talking like that. great concept just was not portrayed in a professional manner. a big disappointment for me and i am sure you will see the over-all rating plummet once a few people have seen this mess of a film.

One of the worst movies I have had the utter dis-pleasure of viewing!
omendata9 September 2019
This has to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen- The reviewers giving this a 2,3 or 4 are being far to generous as this is one of those movies that you look at the time every 5 minutes to see when it will be over and wondering when it will get better; hint: It never does it actually gets worse the longer the movie meanders on!

It is as though they took a Spanish translator who was not to good at his job at translating the script and made a movie from his mumblings as hardly any of the movie makes any sense whatsoever. I only realised this might have been some sort of Spanish collaboration when the three main security guys who all looked the same, spoke the same and had the usual Spanish beards but equally awful acting ability made a nod at perhaps these were all relatives of the Director or writer.

Then we throw in a pretty girl for no reason whatsoever and with the usual mysterious Eastern European accent to try and fool the viewers that this was going to be some exotic femme-fatal - Fatal is the word but not in the good way as her accent could not disguise her atrocious acting ability and prancing around in her first scene like a model when the movie had started in what looked like a post apocalyptic ghetto with people living in rags cmon. Then we have...hold on while i Yaaaawnnnn... Neo Nazi good old trope but in this case bad old trope and the most wimpy and weak characters that would not scare the skin off a custard - oh my goodness you have to watch their scenes to see how awful this movie really is.

I could go on for hours describing why this was so bad as virtual;ly every second presentedus with something absurd, awful, terrible...from the very first opening scene which another viewer mentioned American soldiers wearing WWII helmets then fast forwarding so some eastern european looking concrete jungle then throwing in some awful guy with a Manchester accent in another improbable scene complaining about a homeless guy outside his home when the whole city was in ruin - really??? Even in the security agency little things that i would otherwise ignore made me wonder like the computer monitor which was CRT and not a flat screen and this is supposed to be set in the future; its as if the directors tried to just do everything on the cheap. What am I watching were my thoughts as minute crawled by minute of cringeworthy acting and awful disconnected dialogue and scenes - notably the one in the insane asylum and the overacting black guy in the cage - what was all that about??? Answers on a postcard please! The funniest scene was Haydn taking out the Nazis with a pistol and some night vision goggles on when it was not dark enough to need them lol I fell off the chair and my tv exploded in utter frustration at that point.

The director and writer of this calamity should never be allowed to make another movie, rarely do I see such a disaster in nearly every area from acting ability, special effects, dialogue, story, camerawork - it truly is awful. Then we have Haydn doing some sort of nonsensical Apocalypse Now voice over with what sounds like a sore throat or some vo-coded nonsense to make him sound manly and James Earl Jones'ish - That was when I started laughing; just before I started crying when the female non-actress started mincing around and talking complete gibberish.

The question I want answered is what are actors like Harvey Keitel and Haydn Christensen doing in this? I would have thought the Direct Line insurance ads would be making enough money for Harvey than to appear in this turgid bore-fest and set his career into the nosedive that has affected so many other greats like Nic Cage, John Cusack, Clancy Brown,Ron Perlman et al Surely they read the script before accepting the role or is it as I would surmise saw the pay packet and just grabbed without looking.

What really puts the cherry on top of this turdcake (I can find no other polite expression to call this nonsense) is the Harvey Keitel final voice-over giving some utterly pointless and nonsensical apologue and to make matters worse a final end mid credits scene of Haydn and the girl in the cellar (For no apparent reason whatsoever than to copy the current trend).

I very rarely give a movie 1/10 but this truly is one of the worst movies I have seen this year and rates alongside The Bad Batch as a complete and utter waste of money and the viewers time - I do genuinely feel I have been cheated out of two hours of my life having to endure this cinematic aural and visual torture but due to my movie watching OCD i have to give every film a fair go and watch it to the end but this did push my envelope and i nearly did switch it off - Wish I had now, you have been warned - Only watch this if you want to see how not to make a movie in every conceivable way!

Another stupid over-praised movie
markchevaux26 January 2019
Plain and simple this movie sucks. It is based on faulty premises of doom's day coming because of the evil of men (and weather victimization). The movie made no sense, the story did not flow and most importantly the acting was deplorable. You have been warned!

Waste your money for nothing and your soul for free
soporific10 March 2019
A hobby of mine is to check out the reviews of really bad movies and to expose the astro-turfed reviews. Every single person that reviewed this movie favorably has only one review on IMDB. A pox on whoever is paying these people!

The other thing I want to ask is: Why, Harvey, Why?!?

Completely unexpected!
ivanaaaaaaaaa19 April 2020
I really like Hayden Christensen and I'm a big fan of apocalypse-type movies, so despite the terrible reviews, I couldn't pass on this.

This movie was kind of a mind@#$&, but not in a bad way as if it didn't know what it is or what it wants to accomplish. Hayden's character was a complicated one and it was really painful to watch him at times. The filmmakers did a great job making me feel the anxiety, fear, discomfort, hopelessness, etc.

Hayden Christensen did an amazing job, his friend and Noe were ok, and the rest of the cast was meh (some maybe even annoying). But, it's a low budget movie and really, those other people didn't make much difference anyway.

There's really no easy way to describe this movie, to me it had the elements of:
  • Shelter (Michael Shannon)
  • Man Down (Shia Labeouf)
  • Joker (Joaquin Phoenix)
  • Mad Max (Mel Gibson)
  • Clockwork Orange
  • and something else that I can't really pinpoint.

If you're a fan of Hayden, apocalyptic type of movies, odd low budget movies, or any of the movies I mentioned below, give this one a shot.

Interesting movie
magiucbc8 November 2020
There are a lot of bad reviews for this movie. I've never put out a review before, and this one isn't going to be very informative. But I felt the need to at the very least say that this movie isn't as bad as everyone is making it out to be. It's a dark look into the mind of a man suffering from ptsd coupled with an apocalyptic end times setting. Some are saying it doesn't flow well or make sense...but maybe some of those elements are by design as someone suffering from ptsd can be pretty twisted up inside. This isn't a blockbuster, but it's worth a watch on a lazy and rainy Sunday.

I'm sorry, but the acting from most of the actors was very amateurish. The idea is pretty good, but the script is terrible. You've been warned.

Atrocious movie
darthsparhawk8 March 2019
Rarely I write negative reviews as I always try to find something positive in a movie, particularly it if features one of my favorite actors. I am a fan of Hayden Christensen and enjoyed his performances in Star Wars, Jumper and Outcast, however they all had some plot and a normal storyline. This movie might be a simulation of PTSD-induced psychosis, I have no idea, but if so, it should have been a documentary. As it is, it is unpleasant to watch and difficult to follow. 2 stars and only because of Hayden. Otherwise it is a solid 1 star - one of the worst movies I have ever watched.

Waste of time... absolutely awful acting with a crap plot. Haydn's drunken-like accent was so irritating that I had subtitles on and volume down low to avoid listening to it. A really excellent attempt at making a 3rd rate movie... Well done!

Horrific
mingmarmot1 March 2021
This dire trash probably cost under £100 to make, the actors including Harvey Keitel are not deserving of £100 and the people who made this I would not trust even to work in McDonald's, the lead actor sounds like hes smoked enough weed to give an elephant an overdose and the plot and script will leave you praying for the actual apocalypse to swiftly arrive to extinguish any memory and existence that this film was ever made...I've seen my fair share of under budget disaster movies but this disappoints on a whole new level. It just gets worse and worse until you simply have to turn it off.

At every turn this movie disappoints. I saw some artistry in the first few clips and in the trailer. But in the endI simply felt sorry for the actors and myself.

This is the debut of the Asado Sci-Fi
macraig-229 January 2019
You've no doubt heard of the Spaghetti Western genre? I mark this movie as the debut of the Asado Sci-Fi genre. It's a supremely ignominious debut at that. There is no talent nor innovation on display here; like its Spaghetti forebears, it's laden with misappropriated tropes and stereotypes, acted out - very poorly - with no particular rhyme or reason. Keitel and Christensen will not be able to live this one down; they should have seen the apocalyptic train wreck coming when they first read the script.

Do not
Ok. So, this took me four days to finish and the movie is not even two hours, but like the main character, I struggled heavily through this nonsensical mess.

To put this lightly, The Last Man is truly the worst movie I've ever seen. Bar none. University film projects will be better than this, and I'm not kidding.

It makes zero sense. Zero. The idea of the world ending starts off at least somewhat interesting, but Tove's character is boring and uninteresting. Characters are not explained. Motivations are not explained. Questions are never answered. It spirals into lunacy. Was this a joke? Did the director just... give up? I genuinely ask. This is the first time I've ever felt second-hand embarrassment over how bad a movie was.

I mean it was so terrible all around, that the acting was the least of the problems. (The lighting was good. Whoever did the lighting. Thank you.) But I'm telling you that movie would've made Joaquin Phoenix look bad at acting. Still, Hayden clearly gave his heart and soul into this mess and *tried* to elevate it which is why I am giving it a 2/10 rather than a 1/10.

Why do people call it bad?!
dylanworkowski15 March 2019
I watched this movie and thought it was phenomenal, the main character story was touching and had me invested the whole way and I found myself truly caring about the story. So In the end I don't understand why people rate this bad but I found it a very interesting and investing story.

Don't believe the hate!
andy-127387 May 2022
Yes, the movie wasn't a classic of the century but by no means was it as bad as people make it out to be. The acting was decent, the plot wasn't hard to follow at all unless you're 5 or just have very low IQ but on the negative side more could be desired from the dialogue and character development but as I said it's by no means a terrible movie. In conclusion it was an original and artistic take on a post apocalyptic world and an interesting way to portray what suffering from PTSD is like, it kept you interested and is definitely worth a watch on a lazy day!

Please, forgive me for the wasted time on this movie
knightkp24 September 2020
On my deathbed, I will want the time back, I would have rather sat in the DMV or had a root canal. It truly is not worth the effort to push the buttons on the remote to tune it in and that was more of an effort than anyone put into making this terrible movie. Just don't bother.

Are You Kidding Me.
UltraMaximal17 January 2019
Another. Let's make an entire movie about the tragedy of PTSD and force feed it to an audience for almost two hours but give you nothing else to care about. Enough with the I haz PTSD look what a horrible person I am but I have an excuse. Again, passable cast. It's nice to see Hayden give acting a go again. The premise is just too melodramatic annoying and snowflake.

Exorcising Societal PTSD
webo-66619 September 2020
Argies here exorcising a societal PTSD caused by decades of economic and political war, a dirty war that left thousands dead or disappeared, and the inability to make their way in the world without self-imploding once every decade or so. Alas, here the intent, I guess, is to surmount the PTSD, become a developed "European" country, leave all the Sudacas behind, and avoid that old Apocalypse. I couldn't make it to the end due to god-awful acting by the protagonist and wooden acting by most others. I'm afraid Keitel phoned it in and used his check to pay off the gardeners. The script feels like it was translated from Spanish directly into English without the massaging and coaxing of a proficient wordsmith. The lighting is so dark you can't see anything. Yes, it's a moody, dark sci-fi film, but come on. The actors dress like minor thugs at a boliche or at a seedy bar, waiting for some gringo to waltz in, order a stiff wisquecito and wonder where the tango-ing women be at. All we need is the hott owner's daughter to stand in the balcony and plead that the fates not cry for Argentina. That may have happened. I'll never know because I shut this drivel off after about 35 minutes.

This film start out wrong, was bad in the middle, and ended badly. I fast forwarded through the full parts and I never do that. It cut about an hour out of the movie. Really, don't waste your time.

Dreadful
thedoc-6743718 June 2020
The acting isn't bad, but there's no plot to speak of and a tired, overused and improbable premise. Along with the 100% predictable Dystopian future (global warming of course) with a post war dystopia and PTSD in the main character. It's complete drek but any movie with a human-caused apocalypse is bound to get hype (and money). This is the worst of many like it. On the other hand, if you believe the global warming apocalypse is coming, you might live the (too) dark sets and squalor. Personally, I'm waiting for "Inconvenient Truth" to be re-released as a comedy and listen to the audiences roar with laughter at the predictions (like hurricanes and 30' of water in NYC by 2010).
