Goodbye old friend...
vredrom16 August 2021
Several years has passed since the previous installment and I simply could not remember where the story has stopped. Therefore, I decided to revise the whole thing starting from 1995's original. It took me about 18 hours and I must say it was a good time as always. It took me back more than 20 years, when I watched it for the first time. I was overwhelmed by it. It made me think of my life from a different perspective and I even made some changes as I thought for the best.

Now, two decades later, I can see that most of my dreams did not come true and I am still a little boy trying to find my place among other people, find myself. While watching Eva today, I have remembered my friends from school and university, teachers, family members long gone, colleagues from my very first job - and how they all were really nice to me, though I didn't noticed it at that time. After all those years, Evangelion still resonates in my heart, even more than it was at the first time.

For me 21st century Evangelion movies were something that kept me going through my life. Every time things went from bad to worse I thought that I need to live long enough to see that upcoming Evangelion move. And now, the project that occupied Hideaki's mind for more than 20 years is released. So was it a good movie? Well in a matter of fact - yes. I wasn't expecting any revelations or mind-blowing philosophy, I just wanted to see it all again, and a new movie is quite a good excuse to watch it all from the very beginning. It was pleasant to see old friends, memorable locations, to experience emotions that I felt 20 years ago. I do not care about the plot, action, or CGI - I am just happy seeing Rei smiling again. All the things that I really care are present here. It is a nostalgic movie - it makes you try to remember, try to go back in time to see if you have missed something, not only in the movie but in your life itself. It's also a sad farewell movie, an end of the line, the real end of Evangelion, because there will be nothing more. Evangelion time has passed, now we live in a world without Evas.

I have watched Evangelion when I was just a young student. This is maybe my third time returning to it in more than 20 years. Will I watch Evangelion again? I would love to... Maybe in 10, maybe in another 20 years. But will I live for that long? I am not sure... Most likely, it is a "Goodbye Evangelion" forever. Sayonara old friend. I wish I could see you again for a last time, before I go.

Still almost incomprehensible
ericag_ph24 August 2021
I'm a fan of the series, I watched the TV series decades ago, and now the Rebuild movies, but they are still inherently flawed in that it has always been almost incomprehensible.

So what is wrong with it? Here's what I find myself saying many times:

1. What does that even mean?!?!

It uses unknown terms in a sentence then again several minutes later as if that would help understand what it meant in the first place. Then when it does use a term that is vaguely familiar, it is used in a completely different manner and context.

2. What is that?!?!

It tries to wow us with imagery and animation that is incomprehensible. I don't even know what I am looking at!

3. What is going on?!?!

The main flaw is the story telling. It only allows a portion of it, just barely enough, to understand what is really going on. Frankly, it could lose the audience.

But hey, I am still a fan, love the characters, most especially Rei, distantly followed by Asuka, and I will watch whatever comes next.

"So it's Evangelion 4." "No, I'm calling it Evangelion 3 + 1."
dopefishie14 August 2021
Everyone can relax. It was good.

It took the stunning visuals to the next level.

It stayed true to the characters.

It continued its use of incomprehensible techno-biblical-psychobabble.

The music was incredible.

There's gratuitous fan service.

And I left the experience feeling satisfied even thought I didn't completely understand what I just watched.

Yes, this film will finally answer so many of your burning Eva questions: Will Asuka ever say anything nice?

Will Rei ever learn to be a real person?

Will Shinji ever stop being so depressed?

In the end, it was not the game changer that End of Evangelion was. But it's still a great addition to the story.

A fantastic conclusion to the franchise
SchoolDaysEnjoyer13 August 2021
I was very skeptical before watching this film, I am a huge fan of the original show and film and I didn't think they had to be "rebuilt".

It also didn't help that I thought the previous three films kind of sucked (though I did rewatch them before watching this one and I liked them way more the second time).

But, here we are, 9 years after the last Eva film, 24 years after Evangelion's previous theatrical conclusion, we have this movie, a beautifully animated 155 minutes long love letter to the Evangelion franchise and its fans.

This time the ending can satisfy all fans, those who look for great action, those who watch for the surrealist imagery and philosophy, those who love the characters, this movie ties every loose end beautifully.

Only issues I had here were some unnecessary fan-service scenes (though there are fans who watch it for this kind of stuff, I guess) and the 3D CGI fight scenes look kind of jarring sometimes but other than that, this was yet another high quality film by Hideaki Anno and I would highly recommend it.

Bye-bye, all of Evangelion.

An Evolution of Eva
nicholast199013 August 2021
I love this movie.

Eva 3+1 and the whole rebuild series is complimentary to the original series. If you're going into this movie hoping to find if it's a parallel universe to the original series, or if it's a time loop, crazy mech action, a romance drama, or anything of that nature, you'll be approaching this series in a way that will leave you dissatisfied.

This is a psychological/meta commentary. It's experimental, it revels in its babel and self-indulgence, and that's what I love about it. It examines itself, it's exploring themes around the series, fans of the series, the creator, and what the series means to all of the above.

The rebuild series takes the messages and ideas of the original series and takes a step forward, and this final movie is where that is cemented.

If you liked the last two episodes of NGA and could appreciate what they were trying to do, then there might be something here for you.

Bye bye, all of Evangelion
CracklingRami29 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is my first written review for an Eva film so bear with me. Spoilers contained. The conclusion to the Rebuild tetralogy is so fulfilling. From start to finish you really get to explore the ends of our character's story. Starting with Rei Q who becomes more of a person rather than a drone from 3.0, she was easily my favourite part of the first act of the film with her goodbye to Shinji before turning into LCL. Shinji's PTSD at the beginning was well handled especially with a few visual tidbits like Asuka having to wear a DSS choker. The film also helps give a better understanding to everything that happened in 3.0, including Asuka's eyepatch (turns out to be the 9th angel that merged with her and she gets powers during the final impact) The soundtrack is stellar as always. Seeing more Eva vs Eva action between Shinji and Gendo was amazing (Gendo fuses with Eva 13 similar to how Yui is a part of Unit 01) as well as the new mass production Eva's vs Eva's 2 & 8. The psychoanalysis stuff during the final impact was very well done too. Less depressing as compared to EoE. We get a more in depth look on Kaworu's mental health because he placed too much focus on helping Shinji all this time than himself too (we see him interact with Kaji and he cries). Then Shinji's wish at the end to have a world that doesn't have Angel's and one that doesn't need Eva's was very satisfying and the conclusion with him and Mari at the train station now both adults felt very fulfilling. I'm sure many people would be shocked by the Shinji x Mari ending but in my opinion it works out after everything during the final impact was explained. I'm happy to see Evangelion end on a good and happy note with the world being restored and everyone living on happily. Bye bye all of Evangelion and thank you Hideaki Anno and Studio Khara for bringing this truly epic and wonderful film into being.

A lot of crybabies in the reviews

Warning: Spoilers
I think the main reason of why a lot of people are giving 1/10 it's beacuse their "ships" doesn't become real, and probably they just see the leaks and not the complete film, remember it's only avaible in Japan.

This can't be happening
gretthomb9 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
OMG, I can't believe this after all the wait, is what it ended up. Let's summarize all because I didn't like in the slightest most of the story as well as 3d, but the 2d was good.

So most of the movie is based on a message of growing up, touching grass, stop fantasizing a fantastic world, and you as a person will be love unconditionally? Because that's what I've got, so in a 120-min film this MC ends up delivering all of this to the others before disappearing, so later he could refute that premise by reseting the world into an utopia?

Man, I can't with this anymore, I don't know why this was claimed as either the best ending or at least doing these movies a favor of being tagged underrated jewel when it actually makes them more complicated and unnecessary than they already are.

Gosh, I hoped everything ended in EOE, but it seems far from being the end at this point.

Most annoying characters ever seen
lamptoncfrederique14 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I honestly bear plenty of the actions from the majority of characters in EOE and NGE, but here they all act stupidly without even making utter sense which makes me hate them yet.

.Shinji can't help the fact again that he's alone when he isn't, and still acts quite selfishly at the end even by becoming as many point out chad when he thoroughly isn't.

.Rei is split by two with her clone's appearance, and even though out of the most from this movie series who behave incoherently, is by far the best from going clueless to accept everything that's going on without any complain, but some of her actions are just holding back by clumsy screen play decision making.

Oh goodness, what have they done to Asuka? Since the release of this movies, I was pretty concerned about her portrait here, and my fears became true.

. Firstly, turning her now into a clone was one of the most stupid decisions which this series could ever offer since she's not so different from Rei anymore, and it's implied that she had nearly the same purpose like her in order to become a love appealing bait for Shinji which is a huge step back from NGE.

. Secondly, Manking her more aware of the situation but not making her get that behaving the way she was doing through out those movies, is completily wrong.

. Thirdly, If these is a sequel from EOE as well as being the complete and better take on her, then why did she still behave in that manner with Shinji by knowing that The 2.0 incident was on Gendo, and most of the movie address more that event as his fault more than the one in 3.0? That reasoning is definitely bonkers and baffling.

In addition, I even more hated This Pink-suited-4-eyes who is along side Sakura who ( in comparison with another anime character)'s the most useless as well as the pink haired dumbass who couldn't make reasonable decision by her own, is one of the most undeserving all-the-spotlight, badly written and annoyest characters I ever seen.

Plus, the fact that most of the last part was surrounding him and her due to an out-of-nowhere relationship which showed them running away from that world and portraying a hopeful as well as getting-out-to-the-real-world message, is just baffling because most of the actions showcased of that movie completily contradicts it.

A movie worth the wait
liualan-6916515 August 2021
Shin Evangelion (Evangelion 3.0+1.0) has finally come out and it not only ends off Rebuild, but the entire franchise while also acting as a new beginning.

The animation feels distracting at specific points and has some weird choices, especially with which scenes are animated with or without cgi, but doesn't take away from the experience.

The movie isn't afraid to get meta and personal at moments and the scenes look so detailed and beautiful that you can't help but stay hooked.

Be warned that there are, although a very select few, scenes may confuse at first glance without prior knowledge of the prior installments in the franchise.

The music helps add atmosphere and drives home the themes of the movie and tetralogy very well.

Overall, this movie was absolutely worth the wait and should be watched by everyone, especially with the rest of the Rebuild series.

Sayonara, subete no Evangelion. (Bye-bye all of Evangelion)

Wow, It unbelievably makes EOE look more understandable than the movies thereselves
crimsonjewl4 August 2022
I don't know if I was the only one, but when these movies that forced the plot in numerous moments in order to arrive to a happy ending, feel quite incompetent, unearned, incongruent, and ridiculous.

Plus, This utter of a mess films make me turn around to look at EOE, and it's quite rampage on its own, though, the film surprisingly makes more sense as well as feeling more satisfying than that universe/ sequel/ reboot/ loop/ or whatever you want to call since that plot is nonsense..

Fan Fiction
electricflux15 January 2022
An embarrassment of majestic proportions. So many failures in basic and fundamental storytelling, that I don't even know where to begin.

-Multiple breaks of the 4th wall that interrupt immersed storytelling and basic cohesion -Almost every character is involved in enormous exposition dump monologues. What makes this worse is that many times this happens, its to someone who knows just as much as or even more than them -Severe overreliance on elements from original story, many times for nostalgia instead of taking the time to break new storytelling ground

I'm still in shock. It's like they picked up a book on scriptwriting, and played Bingo with all of the fundamental storytelling mistakes the book said to avoid. I could write a novel on everything this movie did wrong. This film could be studied as a case study on how to focus on everything but what's important. But I'm on an American site, reviewing a Japanese movie, and none of the staff will likely read it. It gets 3 stars for the production value and deeply rare scattered moments of nostalgia-driven satisfaction.

Good movies exist as a result of deep conversations, discussion on what makes sense and doesn't, what should be included and what shouldn't, scenes that are important for characters and scenes that aren't. Ideas win because they are good, not because they come from the top. And I suspect a lack of almost any of that, resulted in the outcome that was this movie.

This is the 100th review for the film. And I'm telling you not to see it.

Classic Hideaki Anno! Farewell Evangelion.
kill_the13 August 2021
Aside from the no brainer cutting edge Mo-cap + CGI + cel shading + mind blowing cinematography, this was a tear jerking closing for Evangelion.

People don't seem to understand that Evangelion transcends conventional plots. It is more of a vehicle for Hideaki Anno to debate and discuss social and individual idealisms.

Thank you Hideaki Anno.

The best out of the Evangelion Rebuild movies
CSVAPOR16 August 2021
First off, to the people new to Evangelion: you really should watch the previous three rebuild movies before this one to get a better grasp of what's happening. If you have patience, it's well worth watching the original episodic series and the original Evangelion movie from 1997 to get the best grasp possible, this take 2-3 days if you binge watch.

Truth be told, I didn't have high hopes after the last movie (3.0).

I thought the unexpected story from 3.0 had written itself into a corner, that there was no redeeming the Rebuild series as there were too many questions left unanswered that can't be explained with one final movie, but the story from 3.0+1.01 did as well as you can possibly hope for it to do--It tied up some loose ends, explained things that made sense of the last movie and added to the Evangelion lore in a meaningful way.

There are fighting scenes but as usual for the Evangalion franchise, some of the best scenes are the interactions between the characters Shinji, Rei, Asuka and the people around them. The most interesting of these is near the end of the movie when Shinji confronts his intimidating father who has been a mystery for so long. We learn he's not too different from his son, he just has a different way of coping.

Many themes about humanity are explored such as maturity, loneliness, compassion and the importance of responsibility and these themes are told in such a way that it didn't feel like it was hammering away at you to make the point like you're an idiot but it wasn't very obtuse either that no one gets it.

This movie easily contain some of the best drawn animations in current anime history, it's filled with fluid animation from unique angles, which helps with some of the fanservice (and there's heaps of it in this movie) Combined with the top notch shot composition, the movie is beautiful to watch. You can see the money being spent on screen.

It's not perfect. The first 15 minutes seemed like a drag even though it was an action sequence, the CGI can be quite jarring in contrast to the hand drawn stuff and certain parts of the story is not easy to follow (this is why i recommend you watch everything else first) but the movie is so great as a whole that it still gets a 9 from me. Evangelion has already cemented itself as one of the most esteemed anime of all time and the last movie elevates its status to something higher.

Time to move on
JeSuisCroissantHD14 August 2021
My first review, here goes nothing.

Besides the awe inspiring visuals and just overall production of this thing the emotional impact this movie gives me is something I can't put my finger on (yet).

I think many people can dislike this movie for very "obvious" reasons, but I think they miss the point. This isn't about mecha's and the OG evangelion anymore, it's something that is saying something about the evangelion franchise as a whole, how we must ultimately move and let go of it.

It's time to move on and find to other things to love.

This is the third time I'm having to do this and it's still annoying that I have to.
HardLight23 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There's a lot to say about the final piece of Evangelion work that Hideki Anno is going to helm, the last piece of "official" Evangelion story to be told and a lot of it is the usual fare when it comes to the stuff that makes up Evangelion.

And I won't bore you with it if you're just a casual viewer, suffice it to say that even veterans of the series are going to scratch their noodle at this a little bit.

But to my review.

I like it, it's an ending that is final - supposedly - and it "works" in the world of the Remake series. But there's a massive problem with it that needs to be said.

In the Evangelion series there was enough room to do story build up, for the plot to be explained that you can understand whats coming for EoE.

This story feels unfinished in that the majority of it isn't needed, the quiet moments in the country where Rei 6 learns to.accept humanity and Shinji comes out of his self-disgust is beautiful, it's quiet and it's a set piece to give Shinji a reason to fight.

But it isn't needed, there's nothing in it that is required to be there and it stumbles as we were told in 3.0 that Toji was dead, he's not, he's alive and has a family.

The ending felt rushed if I'm going to be fair to it, the build up to 4th impact comes without any dramatic descent, it's just happening, Gendo overrides the heroes, takes Unit 13 and merges with it.

Then Shinji enters Unit 1 and battles him in a mental landscape of a world that we've never heard of before, beyond the Gates of Guf.

I feel like Anno is trying to fit in all his ideas into this final project so he can bookend the series and walk away, but it fails to do so as it doesn't answer anything ultimately.

There's references to the long held belief that the series and movies have been a long looping set of ideas that really never ends and I liked it, but then there's the out of nowhere change that comes in right at the end that allows Shinji to survive and fixes the world to be without Evangelions.

Now.

To the big honking Mammoth in the room.

The Ending.

Fans of Evangelion have known for a long time that Hideki Anno doesn't exactly have the best relationship with us, it's sort of a seething hatred, a level of anger and resentment on both sides for being - in both words - a stubborn (well I said a word for bum but apparently that's not allowed now)

And Anno has ended the story of Evangelion by doing something I didn't expect him to do but makes sense with the way things go. Rather than give half the fanbase a middle finger and giving the wanted happy moment for the other (even though both sides would not work in the "happy ending" that would come of that) he choose the third option.

Which is a big ol' middle finger to all of us. All the Rei Stans, all the Asuka Stans, all the EVERY single Stan that is part of the ever lovin' ever toxic as (uigly word for boink) ever silly Evangelion Fandom.

And gets an Adult Shinji paired up with a girl who he had less than 10 minutes of screentime with in the entire movie series.

It's kinda magnificently brilliant in how cruel, how spiteful, how twisted and vindictive it is to all of us while at the same time making the most sense.

Mari was the weirdest yet the most "balanced" of the "Eva Children" in this iteration and having a balanced and stable Shinji ending up with her works.

I just have a bitter pill to swallow as my German Redhaired waifu wasn't even seen in the ending and everyone else was! That's kinda the most painful part.

But why the 6/10?

Well the animation on it's own was fantastic, the art direction and set pieces were perfect as was the voice acting from the original cast - not the Netflix one - and it looked brilliant....

All until we get to the Eva Unit 1 and 13 fights, half of them were in 3D animation and one of the problems with Anime 3D animation is that it can be janky as all hell in places. This one does that where the movements are smooth as hell and the 3D models are pitch perfect

it's just that they're "painfully" slow, and its clear the entire scene is there for little reason other than to cut costs on animation. There were points where I noticed that the scenery was solid blocks and would move when hit but wouldn't be affected by the impacts, there was a particular scene with a house that just floated along after being hit with a Spear of Longinus and I thought "ooh god, when my eye is directed that rather than the fighting robots, that's bad"

Couple that with the confusing ending, the blatant loathing that Anno has for the story and the fanbase and the bitter pill needing to swallow, it isn't something I'm going to watch again.

Evangelion is a masterclass of storytelling and thought, but I still do believe that Hideki Anno needs a wrangler to fix things when they get too out there.

Summary: It's an ending...it's not what we wanted but it's an ending.

And I will keep doing this. I'll resubmit until you post it because it is NOT worth an 8.2.

The conclusion..
JWick235 September 2021
What what I honestly don't have anything to say. I'm just confused on what I just watched not in it being too complex but seemingly stupid and with 0 creativity and logic. But tbh this was expected since Evangelion 3.0 its prequel was was just horrible. I only watched it cuz I felt like completing the franchise. They took some inspirations from the series while diverging it from quiet a lot. They left us with so many questions in the last prequel and this movie still didn't answer them but instead added some more confusion.

The characters are the same pretty much. Though some of them are completely ruined and the way they were written felt like parodies and fanfic instead.

Pretty good sound effects and music. Visuals are pretty good also though the CG is questionable and a bit aggressive at times.

Don't watch it its a waste of time I only watched it cuz I felt like completing it.

Oh dear
chmd-077108 August 2022
I have no idea what happened there, but this doesn't look good in the sense of narrative as well as message because it all seemed crafted by someone at midnight before presenting an assessment.

I didn't really have much hopes for this movie ever since 3.0 because that film is personally awful, and this one doesn't improve that much either the state of those movies.

Perhaps, the only thing which I can find fascinating, is the 2d, but by looking the 3d is like seeing a low-budget DVD-animated movie. Oh goodness.

An exceptional conclusion to the Rebuild quadrilogy
ririsputra13 August 2021
After years of waiting, Evangelion 3.0+10 ended on a satisfying conclusion. The stand out of this movie is the third act, because it isn't afraid to go meta and getting weird with its dialogue and plot points.

The animations could be distracting at times, because of the unstable framerate at some scenes, the visual is also fantastic, the details in each scenes are also another aspect that needs to be praised.

After 9 years of waiting, it's finally here.

Goodbye all Evangelion.

A bit of a letdown
garabedian12316 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So im new to the series. I was forced to watch the anime, but then I started to really like it. So I finished the anime twice.. and still had questions and mistakenly thought that these movies would hold answers...Nothing is answered at all. This is just a giant mess of random crap.

I was expecting more. That Rick and Morty episode made me think this was going to be amazing. But most of it was spent doing more of the same. And WTF is with the ending. Why did he walk away with the new girl and not with Asuka? That almost ruined the movie for me.

So Shinji keeps rejecting human instrumentality and his father keeps setting it back up to be with Yuewi. But we never spend any time as "instrumentality" we dont see what shapes their minds while in that state and its the one thing missing from this show. A brief throw away line " we have been here many times before" is all we get as an explanation and that was a bit lame.

I regret watching the movies now. They do not add anything to the story. I should have stopped after the anime, which was better!

14 years in the making of 4 movies just for bitterness...
evalangley26 January 2022
I created an account just for making this review. By seeing my pseudonym on the internet, you can guess that I have a special interest in the original series which drastically changed my life for the best or the worst... a curse of some kind in my quest for understanding my existence. You can now understand that this will not be your typical review, but more of a reconciliation of my state of mind.

I watched Neon Genesis Evangelion for the first time around 2000. I was around 16 years old and it kind of called me even more because of the age proximity with the characters. At first I was just expecting some giant robots until the plot and the twist unfold after the first couple of episodes. The character development is still unmatched to this day. It made me cry so much due to the connection I made to my personal life which is freaking drastic, it is just insane. Even today, nothing has changed about that.

Basically, there is a character that I was just despising. A character that I share a bond with. I was literally witnessing my life on screen... in granularity. I am not talking about the story of course, but who that character is. The background, the family, the emotions, the challenges, the attitude, the determination, the pride, the hate, the anger, the perfectionism, the independence, the beauty, the torment, the pain, the emptiness, the all or nothing... if you didn't guess I am talking about Asuka Langley Sohryu, then I don't know how you couldn't figure it out. I could not endure looking at her, it was hurting me. I cried so much because I understood why I was like that and for the first time in my life, someone somewhere had been able to paint me in a picture without even knowing me, and that person had been able to create a character that literally was me in a nutshell. I was just hating her... until I realized it was me. To this day, if I had to simply describe myself, the only thing I would need to do is referring someone to go watch the original Neon Genesis Evangelion series. They would be able to make the link without a shadow of a doubt.

To this day, it just haunts me. I am even doing some art and she is my point of focus, because she is proof of my existence. Ironic that a fictional character can be a proof of my existence, but in reality people will never really know who I am while millions know who she is, so in reality people will know what kind of person I am inherently.

So all this for explaining that the original series changed my life. I was expecting this movie series to maybe bring me other philosophical revelations about myself by analyzing this character under a new optic. To my huge disappointment, this was not possible because Asuka is not the same character. There is a reason why they changed her name to Shikinami, because this Asuka is just heavily inspired by Sohryu, but it is not her in this second spin.

I am not going to go further than this, but the story revolves around Shinji and there is no character development which was literally why the series was so disruptive. So nothing that was good from Neon Genesis Evangelion was there. Just questionable choice and plot decisions... like who the hell is Mari?

This was nothing more than a fan service that was not meant for the fans... like the new Star Wars trilogy. If there is something you need to get out of this is just don't bother if you are a fan of the original. The only thing you are going to find here are crushed expectations.

Growing with the Audience
arslan-5100613 August 2021
I have been watch the EVA series for more than 20 years, since the pandemic, I can not go to Japan and enjoy the last movie in the cinema. After watching it, I am pretty sure this movie is made for those who already grew up, I have to say those criticals I heard before about this movie is kind of childish, perhaps they are not able to perceive what the author really want to tell about and the sentiment behind the fighting scenes, be more mature, do not be stucked with who is with whom in the end, open your mind and enjoy the last Evangelion movie.
