It had so much promise.
davidaka23 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It was fun to watch if you don't think too much about the intricacies, in other words leave common sense out of it.

First of, episode 1-talk about a mouthful. That was way too much for a pilot episode, I know they were trying to sink the hook but it is a series, the trailer did it justice they didn't need to rush it . Character development for Ishaya was good, the story development however was way off, it left me playing catch-up most times.

Casting? 10/10. Everyone was perfectly suited for their role.

Plot holes? They just got worse as it progressed. The fast-paced story development was to blame. Another reviewer said, "it was like the writer was rushed..." I felt like they didn't have enough money to continuing shooting, if not, why are we rushing.

I like it's vibe, I like the storyline, I love the casting, the costumes and make-up. Big props to them for job well done.

Derenle is character who's villain story could be this series, 😂.

Filled with SO MANY CLICHES
kasmirzane25 December 2022
Literally every single cliche you can think of was put into this that it's almost embarrassing. It's like an insult to the intelligence of the audience. Are we suppose to believe these are actually teenagers? The story is so rushed and there are so many plot holes. Drug dealing show to save family cliche, friend sleeping with friends boyfriend cliche, guy sneaks into a school out of his league cliche, school riot cliche that actually works despite the fact kids actually burned the school, kidnapping cliche, bitter ex girlfriend turned villain cliche which makes zero sense. How did she even get supply or people to work for her....so many secrets and lies cliches in this that its so bad. Protagonist knows a secret and keeps it from love interest cliche, the person the protagonist admires disappoints him cliche, the fact that the school actually knows the protagonist cheated and yet allows him to stay.....so much obvious nonsense..

Far From Home: A review
oo-onigbanjo28 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Nollywood has come a long way. It has evolved from using powder to paint ghosts and using blackcurrant juice as blood to actually competing with the international standard. It is a good thing for the entire industry, and we say kudos to all involved.

However, it is one thing to be able to compete in the big leagues; it is another thing to mentor young ones who can take the industry to another level. This limited series, Far from Home did that seamlessly. It was able to assemble the veterans who took on supporting roles and use the Gen Z; the young ones to push the movie, and as a result of that, what we are seeing is this masterpiece.

Capturing the debauchery of Isale Eko and the class and luxury associated with the other side, this series follows the tale of Ishaya Bello, a morally grey young man who will do anything to achieve his dreams. He initially starts as naïve and innocent, working 3 jobs and trying to sell his art, but his mother and sister steal his money and are unrepentant about it. Ishaya gets into a lot of pressure and unconsciously decides to mess everybody's lives up.

Indeed, their lives get messed up badly. Everybody who comes close to him gets worse off. This pressure destroys everything in his way. He cheats and forges his way into Wilmer Academy, a school for the 1% elite. As a result of this, the school catches fire as a result of a drug pandemic caused by Ishaya, students get kidnapped, the power couple breaks up, and gangsters invade the school. All within two weeks. Is Ishaya a bad influence? Or is he just under a lot pressure?

This series is character based. That is one of the things they got right. There isn't much character development. The good characters are good, and the bad characters, worse. There are also redundant characters like the character of Denrele. I don't cancel characters. I try to see the reason why someone was casted. There were so many anti-heroes here that creating Denrele was unnecessary. But at the same time, I don't know why Denrele's character resonated with a lot of us. Maybe because most of us have felt a sense of not belonging at one point in our lives. I guess his character is not so useless after all. Dude went through it all in this series. From being emotionally and verbally abused by his father to losing the scholarship to the maid's son to feeling invisible (no one even bothered to know his name) to not having friends to being tased just because he was standing around. His character may be useless, but I think that his was the most important and well-rounded character ever created.

There is a lot of bad parenting going on. Ishaya's mother, most especially takes the heat in this one. Not only does she steal his money, she kicks him out in his time of need. She refuses to allow her husband paint and fend for the family, blaming him for the death of her son as if he did not lose the use of his legs too. Another bad parent is Denrele's dad. He verbally abuses his son, insults him at every opportunity he has and buys exam answers for him to enter the school. Atlas' mum is more absent than ever. She is just never available for her son. Emotionally and otherwise. She prefers holding on to the fringes of her social status. And when she is asked of how she will pay her son's fees, she resorts to blackmail.

Parents need to do better.

Apart from this, there are some things I really don't understand. A typical example is Adufe's character. She goes from a teenager dating another teenager to being a stripper to catching the wandering eye of a gang leader to being the gang leader's woman. All of a sudden, she is organizing kidnaps, overthrowing the gang leader and keeping him locked up in his dog's cage. How? Since the school authorities know that Ishaya cheated, why didn't they just quietly expel him, saving them the trouble of all the stress? And why did the creators of this series fit him into the school smugly like a glove? A boy from Isale Eko in the midst of rich kids and there is no struggle whatsoever to fit in. How? Ishaya steals N150,000 and two gang leaders come to his house to harass his family, but Joe steals drugs worth millions and he is forgotten like that. How? Ishaya confesses to Frank to know about his kidnap, he confesses his other crimes too. And they all forgive him. Frank even allows his family to stay in his house to divert Rambo's attention and wrath from them. How?

An ambulance comes to pick and drop Ishaya's father. Is that even realistic in Nigeria? Rahila wears a cone shaped birthday hat with candles and a cake. Is that how we celebrate birthdays in the trenches? Oga Rambo storms Wilmer Academy with thugs. But these thugs are dressed in corporate shirts and trousers with leather belts. And they are carrying tasers! Government, a gang leader and a drug pusher is speaking posh English and looks so refined. Perhaps they are trying to copy the Russian mob bosses we love to hate and hate to love. We won't know.

However, Far from Home is not a bad watch. If you can look past these plot holes the size of Texas, you will see a compelling story with a perfect cast. Cast members include Mike Afolarin, Natse Jemide, Genoveva Umeh, Olumide Oworu, Elma Mbadiwe, Tomi Ojo, Gbubemi Ejeye, Moshood Fattah, Emeka Nwagbaraocha, Ruby Okezie, Raymond Umuenze, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Funke Akindele, Bimbo Akintola, Caroline King, Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Bolanle Ninalowo, Deyemi Okanlawon, Bucci Franklin, Chioma Chukwuka-Akpota, Yemi Black, Oge Okoye, Jumoke George, Linda Suleiman, Ibrahim Suleiman, Ufuoma McDermott, Femi Branch, Rotimi Salami, Oribabhor Dickson as the enigmatic Baido, amongst others.

A horrible mess.
RagnarBloodaxe23 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I went into this without too much expectation and less than 15 minutes into the first episode I found myself itching to tap the forward button. Who ever wrote the script must have been given a short period of time to do so and no one else went over it. A lot of things don't add up. Is Ishaya a high school student or is he supposed to be in college?

The over exaggerated way in which the rich treat the poor. An acclaimed institution offering scholarships but demanding payment. Some of the scenes are just painful to watch and I found myself cringing at some of the dialogue.

Given more time and a better director, this series would have been better.

Great acting and cinematography
osekhian31 December 2022
I think the casting really boosted the series. Great acting skills, they killed their roles and that made the film a great watch for me. Ishaya embodied his role, it was fantastic. The cinematography was great too. I think the storyline was rushed and not so realistic enough. Since it was going to be a series, they would have developed the storyline better, don't see the need to rush everything in one season. We could have had more realistic feel of what living in the slum area of Isale Eko is for a young adult. It was a nice and it's one of those films I'll see again a few more times when I'm bored.

THE SERIES IS JUST ALL OVER THE PLACE
rocksteady-0111716 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The main character, Ishaya Bello, is he a high school student or what? The art teacher calls him a year 1 student but he was dating a girl who is already up and running her business?

The father of the guy he cleans for gets angry at his son for not winning the scholarship but somehow he is still going to the school? Make it make sense.

How do you kidnap and con your friend 20million N and the still agree to house you after the ptsd caused? Which parents would allow that?

How is a teacher not angry that a student's 'uncle' is randomly strangling him in school?

Why would you need 150k to apply to a scholarship for the needy? Like what kind of institution does that?

Why is Atlas' mum able to bribe the owners of the school? What is the past relationship they have that allows this? Why don't they reveal that Atlas was the one driving and the blame went to Carmen in the car accident? Like what were they trying to cover up? This piece of the story is missing.

Are there teachers in institutions that openly call out poor students? Because why did the teacher call Ishaya Mr Scholarship on day one? Not to mention the rude secretary in the school.

Security cameras are in the school but they didn't catch Frank's kidnapping?

There's too much going on and not enough at the same time. The series felt like filler which was surprising considering it's only 5 episodes. They need to do better.

Props to the sets and makeup artists, they did a good job.

Too much repetition of the same songs throughout, surely Nigeria has an abundance of music.

ALL CRITICS, STOP LOOKING AT THE BAD SIDE.
isotepatson10 April 2023
The show is great, a good story. The ones commenting here with critics, had high expectations.

The show is great, and teaches alot.

I have watched it from the begining to the end non stop.

I have laughed alot, a very nice story, the writter is a genius, no one ever thought of this before.

Most of people expect this to be like other high class budget shows with lots of expenses, this is an African pure series, this is how life is in Africa.

Enjoy the movie, stop trying to watch the flaws of the movie, just watch it and enjoy it.

I recommend it to all of you guys, a very nice African show.

Horrible story, Worse directing, worst writing and manageable acting
praisetogod7 December 2023
The most baffling of all is the writing. The series is completely not intriguing at all.

I tried this series because of the popularity and praises but was eventually left thunderstoke at what I saw. The actors did a preferred job by bringing out the best from the terrible storyline.

It doesn't just make sense. Please, do a better job on your writing. There was a part where the office attendant asked him, (the protagonist) about his transcript and further insisted on calling the school but he said "their phones are dead. Call this one instead" and the office attendant listened to him; that just doesn't make sense at all.

A lot can be done with the actors if the writers are not lazy. The directing still is below average make everything sicky.

Amateur writing and terrible directing
ebukarokonkwo4 January 2023
Far from home looks like a glorified high budget elementary school production written and directed by an imaginative 10 year old. It is truly ridiculous with a plot that lacks direction is uncoordinated , with loopholes that defy common sense.

It is packed with a star studded cast who's talents are undermined by amateur script writing and terrible directing. The series desperately tries to embody western young high school troupes but ends up being pretentious and sometimes downright cringe. The characters lacked depth and are unlikeable particularly the protagonist. The series ends in a rushed and an anti climatic manner and one is left truly feeling like their time has been wasted

A truly terrible series in every sense.

TOO MANY CRITICS
effiongcrown27 March 2023
Seriously guys, why the critical reviews. I dunno about you guys but for me i love it. Look, every movie got it's own flaws, but trust me of you can overlook the flaws of those one, you'd enjoy it. You guys shouldn't come and make Netflix to cancel this series, they're people that are dying to see season 2. Please, if yo don't like it just move on, don't make it look as if the people who made the movie did nonsense. Or you can go make yours, if you hate it so much. I'd personally recommend this movie anytime anywhere so please let no one feel watching wet paint dry is better than this. You'll enjoy it.

There are better Nigerian series
exceladeogun21 December 2022
Far from home managed to garner a lot of attention even before it was released on Netflix, so it's no shocker that the young adult series blitzed its way to the top of Netflix's viewership charts, but, is it worth all the hype?

Far from home tries to thrive on the novelty of being Netflix's first Nigerian young adult series, and in doing so, poorly borrows from all the tropes that the genre is known for. The first episode opens deftly, trying to display the background of the protagonist and how he manoeuvres his way into Wilmer Academy (a school for the one-percenters), but everything goes downhill from here. Far from home is unabashedly centred on its protagonist, and seeing the sprawling number of supporting characters, removes the individuality of the supporting characters and doesn't propel character development.

The themes approached by the series are half-baked at best. The plot is messy, convoluted and filled with plotholes, and most egregiously, it builds up to a climax that's rushed.

The redeeming quality Far from home has is in its cast, locations and cinematography. The cast is a good blend of upcoming actors and a-list actors; Far from home also handles its cast carefully, making sure that the renowned actors (which it has a lot of, throwing them into cameos and smaller roles) don't overshadow the newbies. The cast can also be praised for bringing the best out of the poorly fleshed story they had to work with.

In all, Far from home is binge-able and enjoyable but its innumerable flaws would leave a bad taste, especially given how much better it could have been.

5 hours of my life I'll never get back
pfmreal14 January 2023
I haven't written a review on IMDB before, but with how terrible this Film is , I feel like I need to inform Sane , intelligent persons to avoid this film at all cost!!

It's so terrible I don't even know where to begin. The plot is very unrealistic, the acting was wooden on most occasions. So many cringe moments like the Cheerleader scenes. Cheer leaders in Nigeria?!!! C'mon!!!

How about the fight scenes, or the kid kidnapping, so many plot holes it's a wonder the actors didn't fall through a crack.

Please avoid at all cost. You should Instead watch wet paint dry up. That'll be a more reasonable use of your time.

Excellent Series
writersdoctor25 December 2022
I'm trying to understand the 5 out of 10 star review. Di people just have an issue with shows that deal in reality or ones without dropping "f" bombs all over the place??!! This show is great! The writers do an excellent job. The show is action packed, great acting, and great writing. I wouldn't be surprised if Netflix cancels it as they normally do with really good shows. Seems to stay on air you have to incorporate some stupid agenda, include witchcraft, and use unnecessary language that don't fit. Talent is overlooked and stupidity is celebrated, hence the dumb 5 out 10 stars for what is clearly a great show with great writers.

Good enough for passing time
RandmDood-00710 January 2023
For a show meant to appeal to Nigerians, this show whitewashed the culture down to the mere pronunciation of the protagonist's name; Ishaya.

There are lots more things that make the show extremely unbearable to watch such as the lack of proper context of what exactly Wilmer is, the cringeworthy dialogues, as well as the forced accents and the mediocre acting from a vast majority of the cast excluding the portrayers of the Antagonists. Surely there are much more talented actors in Nigeria; the most populated country in Africa yet the ones that make it to the big screen always represent the Nigerian movie industry quite poorly.

The show has flaws that outweigh the good parts, however i honestly couldn't stop until i got the last episode. The show had so much potential and could do better with a lot more brains put into the writing. It's worth a watch nonetheless.

Might as well call it Ishaya and friend, because that's all it is!
unbelievableactions6531 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I get it, this is the first true 'teen' drama to come out of Nigeria so they don't have a formula yet. But as always they brought in South Africans and Americans and put them in positions of power. People who don't understand the country, the culture and what makes Nigerians tick.

It's not good. The main character has no moral compass at all. And the same pretty much is true for everyone. There was so much potential to create a beautiful teen flick. But we ended up with the tale of a man who'll do absolutely anything to get ahead, even betraying his best friends and we're supposed to root for him.

If there is a season 2 I hope they at least make some of these characters somewhat likeable so we have a reason to want to see them succeed.

Nah!!
princessnicedavid18 December 2023
The emergence of the first young adult series from Nigeria to debut on Netflix marks a significant milestone in the country's entertainment industry. However, despite this achievement, certain aspects of the show might raise concerns among viewers, particularly regarding the apparent overuse of adapted concepts from other sources.

One of the noticeable criticisms is the utilization of themes and elements that seem borrowed or reminiscent of existing concepts. For instance, the incorporation of cheerleading, certain hairstyles, and even the uniform aesthetics that resemble those seen in the South African series "Blood and Water" may trigger a sense of déjà vu among audiences. This replication of ideas might detract from the show's originality and leave viewers questioning the creativity and uniqueness of the series.

On a positive note, the series boasts a stunning cast and impressive cinematography, which contribute significantly to its appeal. The visual presentation, combined with the charismatic performances of the actors, adds a layer of allure to the show. Additionally, the plot, while not exceptional, manages to maintain an "okay" level of intrigue, providing enough substance to keep viewers engaged.

weak storytelling
ponjulnden1 February 2023
I will play the devils advocate and at least say the series showed moments of promise but never delivered on that promise which was a big disappointment given the strong cast.

The cinematography and production design was the only redeeming qualities. As for the story it was poor, illogical, cringe and hard to watch. The fact that the creators decided to be derivative with the western way of high-school drama made me cringe because we have our own unique stories and experiences that haven't been given chance to flourish on the screen, only when we realise our stories are important can we truly create genuine art that do come off as pretentious.

Far from being a good one
chukudenne13 January 2023
First things first The hype from the movie was something else, I decided to spend time to download, watch and give my remarks on it, which I did and would love to share it.

The early part of the movie was seemingly interesting I was loving it and flowing with it until it got to a point when everything became two easy You see two persons who see for the first time and they fall in love immediately, bumping into each other, one of the things we have seen over and over again. There were no changes made to it.

Let's talk about the use of excess stars in the movie The unrealistic part of school, which is something I am still trying to wrap my head around, the visiting times of the school, the horrible fight scenes at the end.

Practically just a show of luxury with little or nothing to gather from the movie.

Watch just for entertainment purpose only, nothing fantastic to see here.
