Too linear and tame for an Aqua Teen movie, but still worth watching if you're a fan of the series
gurlerilgaz12 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'll start by bringing up the failure that was the trailers and the promotional material. Half of everything that was in the movie was also in the trailers, so much so that the "twist villain" was basically revealed the first time you saw the damn guy.

Other than that the movie itself didn't have the feel of neither the first movie nor the series as a whole. And maybe they just didn't want to make just a longer episode of Aqua Teens. Still, it didn't have the out of the blue nonsense that made the show so great barring the Mooninites and the ending, which was pretty good all things considered.

Another thing that bugged me was how light the cast felt. Just the regular trio, Carl, Mooninites, and the two new antagonists. I feel like the movie could have used more scenes with other characters from the Athf pantheon just to cut up the structure.

Overall, it's good to know that there is going to be more Athf content in the future, and hopefully what we'll have next is better than this movie which felt more like a proper movie than an Aqua Teen movie.

Flawed But Fun Return for ATHF
decrazyman10 November 2022
ATHF maintained a consistent high quality for 15 years in air, and the recent shorts on YouTube felt just like the old series. So my expectations for this were pretty high. I won't say I'm disappointed, but moreso I got a mixed bag.

What works: First off, the animation is of notably higher quality than the series. Some fans have complained about it, but I enjoyed the higher quality animation. The first movie also had better animation than the series, albeit not to this extent. Speaking of the first movie, this one actually has a plot unlike the first one, and it's actually pretty engaging despite an inconsistent pace. Also, the intro song is amazing.

What doesn't work: The comedy is different. The zany absurdity and rambly, witty dialogue ATHF is know for is still there, but unfortunately it takes a backseat to more conventional and sometimes predictable jokes. Also, while I appreciate the effort to try something (somewhat) new, satire and social commentary is not ATHF's strong suit. The very few times they did it the series fell flat, and that's the same case with the movie.

Also, the Mooninite interruptions are funny at first but they get a little stale and repetitive as the movie goes on. However, the interactive texts are hilarious.

It's not all bad, the characters are mostly the same and there are some laughs to be had. Just not at the same nonstop pace as the series. Also the action sequences in here are brief but genuinely incredible. Plantasm is definitely worth a watch, and while not the strongest ATHF entry, it's something fans can appreciate, and it's relatively friendly to newcomers.

Great as an Aqua Teen fan, others may need some "influence."
wilkcarver9 November 2022
Admittedly it's not as absurdist as the show or the first movie, it actually tells a concise story. I could have done without all the Mooninite movie interruptions, though they were funny at times. It felt like an extended "villain of the week" style episode of Aqua Teen with Neil being a pretty funny inclusion.

Good to see all of the voice cast return, a few more little cameos would have been cool as it feels almost like a reunion since the show's cancellation. I just hope Carey Means got a better contract deal out of this one., and I really do hope the sequel bait at the very very end wasn't just a goof.

Aqua Teen could stand to return every couple years with something like this, but I would kill for a new season instead.

Glad to see the Aqua Teen's back
Yosherss8 November 2022
Judging from a movie perspective, It's an improvement over the 2007 theater release, but is still filled with nonsense all the way through, which is expected from the humor of the show, but sometimes I feel like it detracts a bit from the enjoyment like the Mooninites that were funny at first but end up feeling kinda stale by the end of the film, the runtime feels a bit too short as well, but it has decent pacing. Aside from that, nothing I didn't expect, amazing animation for Aqua Teen standards tho, amazing song by RTJ as well, very much recommended if you enjoyed the show, won't blow your mind but will make you laugh.

Aqua finding their groove again
toonyjakes12 February 2023
Aqua Teen has always been a gem in my eyes, yet they can be completely deceptive. You can never expect, nor trust where a certain story (or mixture of nonsense) will end up, but that's why I love this show. This movie was surprisingly straightforward and I loved it. But of course, the trademark mannerisms are on point.

Don't look at the thumbnails for the film, you'll think it's some sort of superhero ripoff. This movie mainly plays off of the Amazon corporation, which yes I think it's a lazy step, but they make it work somehow. The main villain in the movie is kind of annoying and certainly not like the alien spider or Mr. Wong from the dickesode- he's not surreal, he's just a power hungry weird guy with a man bun that does yoga. But all I can say is that fans will be satisfied, there are epic moments for the characters, and it's amazing to see them separated only to unite again.

All in all, the movie has some of the greatest ATHF moments of all time, seriously. But the dull parts are flimsy and lame. Without them, this would have neared perfection. Oh and don't worry, the theme song is exquisite.

older aqua teen is more beautiful
accauntmillesimo30 April 2023
In my very personal opinion, I have to admit that initially I felt quite disappointed with this film, because the behavior of the protagonist Frylock out of tune annoyed me a lot. To add further discontent, there was also the character of Frylock's friend, who was irritating not only from the point of view of drawing but also from the point of view of personality.

However, I have to say that with the passage of time the conversation became more interesting and I started to like the film. Although I didn't like it as much as a regular episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, I was fascinated by how the plot evolved.

I noticed that the film definitely improved towards the end, with a more engaging narrative and a more articulated plot. Of course, the level of fun and comedy that this show has accustomed us to expect has not been fully achieved, but that does not mean that the film is to be thrown away.

In conclusion, I can certainly say that the Aqua Teen Hunger Force film is still a positive experience, able to offer moments of fun and entertainment with a narrative that combines various themes. Despite its initial slowness and the character of the characters that may not please everyone, the film offers a fun and interesting vision of the world of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and for this I recommend the viewing to all fans of the genre.

Really Missed An Opportunity Here
seblivingston22 November 2022
As an Aqua Teen Fan from season 1 all those years ago during college, the nostalgia making me a lifelong fan, I was super disappointed in this film. It felt like an extended episode and not a good one at that. Felt disconnected.

Think about what Family Guy did with their Star Wars parodies, that's great storytelling. Let's be honest the last ATHF movie wasn't the best either. If they do another film I hope they push the envelope, do something really of the box, you're ATHF for crying out loud!

I did like the Neil character, but cannot say the same for others. They felt uninteresting. Not sure if anyone noticed but the guy who does Carl's/meatwad's voice seemed to have some sinus issues going on for some of the voice work. Sounded stuffed up slash nasaly.

I have faith before it's over ATHF will not let me down, you got this!

AQUA TEEN FOREVER!!!
coffeefoxo10 November 2022
Frylock, Master Shake, Meatwad, and Carl all triumphantly back again. Lots of funny gags and references to older ATHF and pop culture. Star wars references, interruptions from the Mooninites, Mad Max, Master Shake wailing on Meatwad, this movie has everything that a true Aqua Teen Hunger Force fan could ask for. Adult Swim knocked it out of the park with this film.

The movie has incredible animation by Aqua Teen standards. You can tell it had a relatively higher budget compared to other Aqua Teen projects, a very good view of what Aqua Teen should look like in the future. A must watch for any Aqua Teen fan. Fingers crossed for a sequel.

The Return of Everyone's Favorite, Idiotic Food Mascots (for better or worse)
Bippityboo6211 February 2023
If you had told me a few years ago that Aqua Teen Hunger Force (or Aqua TV Show Show, Aqua Something You Know Whatever, etc) would come back as a movie in 2022, I would've told you that you were full of it, but now, I'm happy to see the iconic trio and their sardonic neighbor Carl back! As for the movie? Well, we'll get to that in a second.

ATHF was one of Adult Swim's longest running shows at the time of its cancellation in 2015 and for good reason; the surrealist humor and shoestring flash budget made for a charming, funny, albeit very stupid show that was thoroughly entertaining. In 2007, they released a theatrical film "Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters." I'm probably in the minority of fans that thought, despite my love for the show, it was an extremely disjointed and disappointing mess of a movie. The show's formula of surrealist humor and insanity works well for 11 minute vacuums, but not an 87 minute feature film, especially when it feels like they're still working on the same budget.

Aqua Teen Forever: Plantasm seems like it learned from the mistakes of Colon Movie and both improves upon it and falters a bit. For one thing, the animation is VASTLY improved. People no longer look like static png's with moving mouths and actually have movement to them. That may not sound like a lot, but it's a huge thing for Aqua Teen. The opening sequence alone sold me on the improvement and even if there's still the occasional animation style here and there, the new animation helps breathe further life into it. The voice actors also feel like they've jumped right back into their roles and like they haven't been gone for nearly 7 years. There's still love for the IP and I'm glad the cast seems like they're having fun.

The story itself is also a massive improvement...as there actually is one somewhat this time around. It feels like the episode of Frylock leaving the gang, only with a bit more stakes to it: the gang is officially split up, Frylock is in a beat up apartment downtown and working for a corporation called Amazin (a not so subtle nod to Amazon), Meatwad is living at a dog shelter bring in dogs that don't even need rescued, and Shake is a homeless bum who refuses to get a job. Frylock becomes buddy buddy with the CEO of Amazin and begins research into cloning that can allow the vertically challenged boss to be taller. However, things go array when a disgruntled employee uses his new research to create plants and usurp the company. With the world in peril, it's up to the Aqua Teens and Carl to settle their differences and save the world from domination.

The story is very straightforward this time around and doesn't feel like a total, shock value filled, disjointed amalgamation and it works well enough for what it is. You're not going to get anything deep or insightful from this film about food products kicking ass, but it's still a pretty fun time regardless...for the most part. While I think it's a vast improvement on Colon Movie, I do still have some gripes. For starters, the movie feels like a giant middle finger to Amazon. I'm all for dragging them through the mud with their unethical work practices, but nothing really new is added to it and the commentary is already know jokes and critiques about Amazon that have been done to death: the CEO who's full of himself and slightly evil, the underprivileged people being paid nothing and working in grueling conditions, the fact that it's pretty much taking over the world, etc. Another thing that is slightly disappointing is the actual Plantasm part, which doesn't even come into play until the third act. It's fun to see the group fight off a large amount of mutated plants, but it feels like it comes in way too late to have much impact.

But by far the most annoying thing about this movie are the Mooninites. Normally they're alright, but here they are an absolute travesty. Their main purpose here is to break the fourth wall (this movie is streaming on HBO Max) and either mess with the timeline of the movie or just flat out insult the audience with a bunch of meta humor and pop culture references. This is a trend that's become very annoying in recent times, especially in shows like Rick and Morty and most egregiously in Velma, and it's no different here. The pacing is pretty decent for the most part, but these segments bring the film to a screeching halt. One grievous flaw in particular is a sequence involving them insulting the audience as they fast forward through the film as a chase scene happens, with Shake, Meatwad, and Carl talking about the insane thing that happened. It's probably the most cliche trope you could do and does not at all feel like Aqua Teen. While I appreciate them toning down the insanity to make the story more streamlined for a movie format, these segments really sour the movie for me and keeps me from wanting to watch it again, hence the 6/10 score.

All in all, it's a decent but flawed return for ATHF. They've apparently announced they're making another season and I'm excited to see what they bring to the table this time around, especially if they keep this style of animation, though I really hope they don't start to go down the Meta route or make it more streamlined.

Laugh count: Once
DiamondOzMU14 January 2023
Like so many others, I've been a fan of Aqua Teen since the 2000s and was thrilled when this movie was announced. Unfortunately, the result was very disappointing.

The plot is certainly more focused than the previous outing, which while not perfect, retained the show's humour perfectly. This time, the audience receives a more linear story parodying the unlikable tech moguls we know and endure today, but the satire itself doesn't have much else to say other than pointing to the obvious faults and misdeeds these real life supervillains commit.

The classic characters are still very much themselves, particularly Meatwad, who is as naïve and innocent as ever. Peter Serafinowicz, an amazing impressionist and hilarious performer, is used for little more than a very good Robert Downey Jr. Mimic, which was a bit of a waste of such talent. Longtime fans may also be disappointed by the lack of favourites such as The Plutonians and The Cybernetic Ghost Of Christmas Past, who provided the show and previous film with some hysterical moments. Instead we receive a very dull villain sidekick in Elmer, the flat Japongaloids and Fraptaculans and the forgettable co-workers of Frylock.

While it was nice to see these characters again and not feel like soulless nostalgia such as Han Solo in The Force Awakens, they could and should have been used better, or at least be given better dialogue. Ultimately, I still want more Aqua Teen but not if it's as dreary as this sad, wet fart of a return.

They still got it
Amthermandes25 February 2023
Aqua Teen is back....sorta. They've had their differences, but it takes an egocentric shipping conglomerate named "Amazin'" (yeah, we all see what you did there) to help the Teens get past their petty differences, and work together to somehow, maybe, save the world, I dunno...

You still get the regular ATHF humor, the totally random encounters, and Shake being Shake. It feels a bit different, being a movie, but it's a lot like the classic episodes, and any fan shouldn't be disappointed. All the main characters are there, and some new ones are introduced. Some people complain about the animation, I for one see no problem with it. It's the same show just with a teensy bit more budget.

It really feels like a slightly-above average ATHF episode. It's got some memorable lines, and I think fans should be lucky we even got this movie, considering. Literally the next best thing to a Metalocalypse movie (or show continuation) is another Aqua Teen Hunger Force season. We didn't get that, but we did get another movie which is the THIRD best thing we can get from the offspring of Adult Swim (and Bento Box and Williams Street productions). And it came out of nowhere, so my fellow fans, let's consider ourselves lucky, because this film isn't some stupid cash-grab, desperate movie for attention. It's got actual ATHF soul.

AQUA BORE
marceldibosa14 November 2022
The Good.

1)Animation quality of the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie was as i'd expect from an adult swim ip, so i will not be judging this movie on that fact because the animation is what it has always been, but on a higher budget.

2)Voice acting was as good as i remembered, Shake, Meatwad, Frylock and Carl, all sound as good as ever. Folks that's about it for the good and now...

THE BAD

One of the most boring, disjointed animated movies i've ever watched. I actually watched this movie through 3 days because every scene exhausted me. The plot was thin to none existent, the dialogue was banal and unfunny, and that constant meta interruption on my screen was cringeeeee. Aqua Teen Forever: Plantasm is a dreadful chore of a movie and i wholeheartedly do not recommend.

a dull stale cash grab
talllwoood1330 November 2022
The only thing keeping this going is the nostalgia to see our beloved characters as I've been watching Aqua teen hunger force since at least 2002. I've seen the series multiple times as it's usually one of the more fun and creative shows on tv with what they can do. Come on where else are you going to see a talking hamburger combo! I don't understand why they thought this was the best script they could have went with. Was there a rush to get it done? I found this to be unwatchable and boring where at least the first movie had at least a memorable story for it. Yet the show has such potential. Maybe too much where we'll never be satisfied? Who knows. There was and is a lot of episodes that they could have went with to make a movie and just trash what we got. Similar to the Beavis And Butthead movie where they went to space (yep that's a thing). They had some fun explaining where and what Frylock, Meatwad and Master Shake have been up to since Adult Swim cancelled them as the last season or two was mediocre to say the least and they seemed exhausted or out of ideas but I seriously wish this never came out. Adult Swim made so many bad decisions I completely gave up on their network cancelling metalocalypse and this as well as some other shows I really enjoyed.

The story is a mess, it takes forever for it to establish anything. Just one stale joke after another. I maybe laughed 2 or 3 times. There is so little story in the beginning that you ask yourself why am I watching this it's just a soul less cash grab. Then when eventually we do get our story which is just a satire of this and that person without ruining anything it's just like who cares.

The moonanites constantly breaking the fourth wall was not needed and yet I feel with the vast amount of characters they had they could have seriously done more with. Such as Hand Banana, The bible fruits, Rubberman (the snowman made of trash) or even Dr. Wongburger.

When it ended and after the credits for that last little bit of footage I honestly didn't care. My friend fell asleep watching this how bored she was and same thing she had watched the show for 10+ years. When I explained the ending she just looked at me puzzled. Did some network which I swear is behind both quick cash grabs dumb 20 year old kid take their dads spot or something and say no no.. it's got to be space! SPACEEE. It just doesn't work for either Beavis And Butthead or this.

The animation is solid, the voice actors for the most part returned to play their roles and just like a lot of animation lately the writing is ATROCIOUS. Such as Rick And Morty (season 5), Archer, Aqua Teen "forever" and beavis and butthead or the last series (not movies) of South Park are all awful. The story I'm running out of words to keep saying describing this uninspired train wreck.

This movie was liek,,, really good !! Didnt hit as hard as the series but it was still really fun ;o. I can understand where some people are coming from when they say they dont like this movie because it isnt really like the show, but hey, its been 7 years since the show ended. Also urmmmm neil especially the small one was so freaking hot. Im not even gonna lie. Hes rhe hottest aqua teen hunger force character ever invented. If they were make an aqua teen hunger force reboot or something along those lines, i hope and peay that they will put neil in it because oh my lordy lord he is so mf hot i would literally let him commit devious acts to me. Also elmer reminds me of agustus gloop :-)

Aquawoke Yawnfest
TheGMang14 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Hugely disappointing. Another franchise that should have just stayed dead if it's going to be this bad. This postpandemic version is full of subtle woke messages. There's global warming nonsense about c02. There are dali llama jokes while frylock wears a bandanna that says suck my dongle- weird as this came out well before that real life incident. The animation is missing the charm of the original. The voice acting is tired and uninspired. The direction does not support comedy animation, it doesn't work at all. The plot had some interesting concepts but the writing itself isn't funny. I did not once laugh out loud. It's not attention grabbing and feels disjointed. It had some of the same old jokes but they don't play them in a funny way for some reason. I liked the first movie ok, but this one you should skip to preserve your memory of the show. Hopefully they didn't f over the guy who plays frylock yet again and he got paid good money for this schlock.

Thank You!
tbridges-5155724 April 2024
Thanks for coming back?

I didn't catch all the permutations of the petering out of the Aqua Teen Hunger Force phranchise, but this movie length features re-establishes this as a phantastic and phresh show!

I guess I need to watch it from the start again!

I really enjoyed the movie. I am so happy to have you back. The story is a completely believable continuation of the series.

And so much fun!

I have really missed these rich characters!

Very sorry it was two years after the release that I finally stumbled upon this wonderful creation.

Now if I only knew a single other human who could give a thing.

Oh well, it's their loss!

Disappointing
amarisdsage25 February 2023
I'm a huge fan of the show, so of course I was excited to watch a new movie. Sadly it wasn't nearly as good as the show was. I had hoped to see more familiar characters, but instead was introduced to several new and very interesting ones. It hurts me to say there's something ATHF I don't like, cuz the show was so brilliant and hilarious, but this movie just didn't do it for me. The humor seemed to be the same, but it just didn't deliver like it used to. I'm so sad. Still love you, ATHF.

This is the part where I just try to fulfill the ridiculous character requirements so I can submit my review.

this made me borderline suicidal
gdflx22 May 2023
ATHF was my favorite show for years. It got me through some incredibly dark periods. Even towards the end of the original run when the quality started to dip it was still the show I loved. This isn't. It has the same characters and name as Aqua Teen Hunger Force but it is not. In the first twenty minutes of this abortion I didn't laugh once. In a normal 12 minute episode of ATHF I am doubled over for most of it. Matt and Dave took the bad reviews of the 1st movie(which rocked)to heart and made this trying to make it "good" which apparently means formulaic and boring. Retire guys, you've lost it.

It's Daria
blackaudun18 November 2023
I've been a fan of ATHF since the beginning and THIS is not aqua teen! It might have the characters but it's like watching Daria. It's drab and hard to focus on with all its pointless nonstop fast pace talking that attempts to sound smart but goes nowhere and most often without a punchline. Every single episode of ATHF had me on the floor laughing no matter how many times I watch it but I got half way thru this movie without a single laugh. I hate to give a review like this but it's attempting to be something it's not. Maybe they're rebranding the franchise or maybe they just forgot what it's all about. I'll watch the original episodes if I want to laugh without having to think.

Not nearly outrageous enough
jfgibson735 May 2024
I enjoy these characters as much as anyone, but this movie was way too conventional. The appeal of the show is that it can go in so many nonsensical directions in just an 11 minute runtime. For this film, it seems like they thought they needed to keep a linear narrative going for the 75 minute runtime. I preferred it when things would go off the rails right from the start, and then keep getting more and more out of control. Of course, there are plenty of silly moments and goofy plot points, but compared to what we've been used to, this seems really tame, even as they add in explicit language. I recommend skipping this one--it offers minimal payoff.
