Delightful mystery series with literary references and snarky dialogue!
cgvsluis9 May 2022
This is a mystery series built around a newly retired professor Harry Wild, played by Jane Seymour, and a quirky albeit snarky teenage boy from the wrong side of the tracks named Fergus, played by the wonderful newcomer Rohan Nedd.

This series won me over from episode one! The mysteries are great and the dialogue is fantastic. The supporting cast is wonderful and anything but typical. Harry has a son Charlie who is a guard (police officer), Fergus' dad, who is a low level criminal, seems to know a guy who can just about do anything. Harry's local pub is filled with colorful characters including the owner and a constant bar stool fixture named Glen, who has some of the most ridiculous dialogue!

I really enjoy all of the literary references in the regular banter...Harry establishes early on that she is not your typical "grandmother".

I have already started recommending this to my closest friends and can't wait for season two. I found it thoroughly delightful!

A quirky entertaining detective series
bosporan11 April 2022
There have been a number of similar shows on UK TV recently; odd-couple detective teams e.g. The Chelsea Detective, Murder in Provence, McDonald & Dodds. Fabulous for me as they are right in my wheelhouse and this one delivers.

Harry (Jane Seymour) is self-confident, mouthy with few social filters and, as a recently retired English Professor, offers unwelcome grammatical corrections during conversations. She has a detective son Charlie (Kevin Ryan) whose life she generally makes a misery by interfering with his cases - usually by solving them! Her partner-in-crime is Fergus (Rohan Nedd) who is an articulate, street-wise teenager from a poor background. Indeed they first meet during a mugging perpetrated by Fergus on Harry! Their relationship works well and they develop a growing mutual admiration as their complementary skills help them solve cases.

Easily-digestible, enjoyable viewing - believable core characters - interesting stories flying above the mere procedural.

I have a great time

Acorn did it again! Casting Jane Seymour as lead character is the right decision. She clearly have fun as an amateur detective, and combining classic literature as a part of story is just great. Can't wait for season 2, Acorn! 💋

A fun show

It makes me want to learn Shakespeare and other books- or read them again. I'd say that is a great outcome for a show these days. Jane of course is wonderful. The supporting cast are fine too. I'd like to see more series- I hope they continue for a while.

Wild at Heart
Prince-P13 June 2022
Time sure flies. As early as 1973, Jane Seymour had her big break as a Bond girl in "Live and Let Die". After leaving her native England, she then made herself known as the "Queen of the Mini-Series" on American TV. Among other things, by playing the lead in "Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman" for more than five years.

But now Jane Seymour is back in Europe again. In "Harry Wild", she portrays a retired English professor who discovers that she has a penchant for solving criminal cases that the police have failed at. Especially such assignments where her own son, Detective Inspector Charlie Wild, leads the investigation. That this is not always so popular in the police force doesn't come as a surprise to anyone (except for Harry Wild of course).

The result: a TV series that combines police procedures and comedy in a very entertaining mix.

Really enjoying it!
bkm-728 April 2022
It's good to see Seymour in a series again. And while I enjoy a good British cozy mystery, I can't recall ever reading or watching one based in Ireland. I'm enjoying the characters of Fergus and Harry and the emerging friendship and partnership between them.

Annoying Characters
auntpeanut-0713926 April 2022
The storyline is interesting enough. I really like Fergus and Charlie. Normally I like Jane Seymour, but her character is obnoxious. I can totally see why her son calls her by her first name. I also hate Charlie's wife. Every time she appears, I want to close my eyes. She's a mousey nag. I don't feel like this show is really aiming for a 2nd season. Just my opinion.

Good mystery show
ebradley-794415 May 2022
If you liked Miss Fisher, or Jane Seymour, you will like this show. It's fun Agatha Christie style mysteries solved by an older woman and a young man, that she meets by random. Interesting characters, great cast, and good stories. I really like it.

Relatively Good Series
Michaela656929 July 2023
Harry Wild is a new British mystery that airs on Acorn streaming. Jane Seymour plays a retired professor who becomes a private investigator after retirement. It is a little bit like Murder She Wrote with Angela Lansbury. I tuned in to this because I certainly enjoyed Jane Seymour in the Dear Prudence detective movie on the Hallmark Channel. This is a relatively good series with good plot lines and good writing. The acting is very good. The episodes are very interesting. A couple of things I do not like about the show is first of all the profanity. I could do without the profanity in this series and I'm sure many others who watch this feel the same way. The series has also made the character Harry out to basically be an alcoholic even though they do not outright say it it is strongly implied by how much she drinks in the series. I'm finishing season 1 and have enjoyed it except for the items above I will wait to see if I will watch season 2. I really hope they will take out the profanity next season. The series would be just as good without the profanity. Murder She Wrote with Angela Lansbury rarely used profanity and it was excellent. I hope that Harry Wild will take note and do the same. The profanity is what led me to give this series a review of 6 instead of 9.

Just Enough...
tomtpcarpe19 April 2022
Just funny enough to watch for a while, and just annoying enough to make me stop. I'm a Jane Seymour fan, but Harry Wild is so obnoxious and irritating! As is the police commissioner (or whatever her rank/position is). I'm married to a strong, confident, successful woman, so I know how wonderful they are. Do the Harry Wild writers really have to make these characters so hard to like? I watch shows to be entertained, not to be irritated, and this show irritates me.

A Gem!
laurelhagen11 April 2022
Jane Seymour is wonderful in this comedy as Harry Wild, a recently retired English professor. Harry is not some old stodgy retiree but a vibrant, sassy and often hilarious amateur sleuth who can't help but correct improper grammar even when dangerous situations. This series delivers it all; comedy, mystery, heart in a well-acted and filmed package.

So Much Drinking
holloway-sarahjane14 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I haven't counted the bottles of booze in these episodes but one wonders if there's some funding by wine companies to keep a glass of wine constantly being filled. I doubt if Jane Seymour drinks or smokes since she cares about her looks and spends a lot on those teeth. This is not the only detective show out there that does this but it seems like it is replacing the constant smoking that was part of the 1950's movies. Does it matter in terms of the plot? Only that some of the dialog takes place in Pubs. I fear for the livers of the characters. As a side note Harry Wild better get tested for STDs. She seems to think sex with anyone is just fine, along with the booze. The plots themselves take a air of silliness because they try so hard to connect literature to murders. This isn't an important show and will not go down as one of the greats but it's good enough and I won't mind watching so I can start counting how many bottles and how many trysts. Frankly, I do actually appreciate that Jane Seymour hasn't had a lot of plastic surgery, and she moves well for her age.

I only made it halfway thru the first episode and then bailed
reb-warrior16 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I only made it halfway thru the first episode and then bailed. I found the character of Harry obnoxious and crude. I just didn't like her. I thought from the trailer she was going to be charming, witty, and quirky. But no, I was wrong. I do like cranky, sarcastic, witty characters. I watch other shows with characters like that, that I like very much. I think they are trying too hard to make her hip with this gen of viewers, but it's just not working and she comes off as crass and frankly, unlikable.

From what I gather she is going to co-detect with the teenage kid. Oh joy. I didn't like the kid and the whole classroom scene. I didn't find him funny or clever. Just smug and arrogant. From reading the reviews, all her clues and figuring out stuff comes from literature. Not actual police-type work or research. There is no indication that she's a big crime buff or anything. She just retires from teaching literature one day, and bam, she's solving murder cases the next day.

Maybe I'm not being fair and should try 2 or 3 full episodes and see how it goes. I may give it another shot. Maybe hear what some of my friends think. But it was just very hard when you just don't like the lead character. I like Jane Seymour. Always have loved her in other roles. So I'm not sure what happened here. 3/10.

I hope the cast is up to another season. It was a great series. Great cast of main characters. So good to see Jane Seymour again. She is one of the ageless beauties no matter her age.

Engaging story lines, but...
repete524 July 2022
Some of the acting is a bit cheesy...Fergus character in particular is rather amateurish acting.

Jane Seymour's mouth is increasingly crude speech, unnecessarily vulgar.

Surprisingly and pleasantly fun!
BeneCumb8 June 2022
/Refers to Season 1/

A distinct Irish approach with lots of black humour and political incorrectness - but crimes are never fun, but characters or situations can be. Singular performances (well, Jane Seymour was 70 when filming, can you believe this?) and versatile cases (true, not all are equally interesting and meaty, but still...).

In spite of evident exaggerations, the Series captivated me in the very beginning and I really do hope that Season 2 will follow as the last episode ended in a promising manner and several storylines remained infinite. As for similarities, I would juxtapose Harry Wild with Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators from UK. If you liked-enjoyed one of them, you would definitely like-enjoy the other as well.

PS Season 2 has somewhat lost its "sheen" and vigour, with some cases where one could easily surmise the wrongdoer, but 7.5=8, so - no change in my opinion here.

FUN, FUN, FUN......
suzpomz30 May 2022
All of the reviewers who don't like this series are just tooooo serious about it. It's for FUN, and I, for one, am having a ball watching it!

It is so great to see Jane Seymour in a series again, and her "partner-in-solving-crimes", Rohan Need, is, IMHO, brilliant.

PLEASE, there MUST be a second season and a third and and and...

By the way, I'm also a "grammar nerd", so I totally understand Harry! She's not "arrogant". She just knows how to perfectly use the English language!

S2 ep 2
trimellone-1884012 October 2023
I started this season, expecting more of the same--okay, fine. But I need subtitles and they've totally messed up episode 2. I don't know whether they applied the closed captioning from Season 1 or what, but whatever they're playing has nothing to do with the beginning of this episode. I can hear some of what is being said by the group of partying girls, but I need the right subtitles in order to really follow it all. I'm really disappointed by this lack of care for the hearing-impaired. Maybe I'll try again some day, but I won't be watching unless they get it together to play the right subtitles.

Love Jane Seymour but I got hooked, character development even! Quirky little procedural, some omg, how dare they do that/be like that?! Moments that add an extra depth. Can't wait for season two.

Jane Seymour wrong for the part
jokamac8 April 2023
I have watched the first episode and am extremely disappointed. Jane Seymour was just not right for the part she does not have the presence to carry the role. The Idea of the show is quite good and being set in Ireland the irish humour would make a very enjoyable change to the huge amount of Police shows available on television which rely on violence and swearing to try and fail to entertain. I have read most of the reviews on here and am surprised about the high ratings it is receiving especially for Ms Seymour. I will give it one more episode but if there is no improvement then the rest of the series will be avoided. UPDATE I have now watched the second episode and both myself and my wife have decided it's not worth watching any more it's getting worse.

Jane Seymour's best role ever?
SavRev14 April 2022
Retired literature professor solving crime. Fun repartee. Enjoy the literary references employed in the plots.

Personally I think Jane's character is too young, vivacious, and witty to be retired.

We find it hysterically funny.

Harry and Fergus - such a unique and fun team

These two characters are different than the average detective duo, makes the show more interesting and enjoyable to watch. Decent storylines and great chemistry between the stars.

I cannot get enough of these feel good English detective shows
gillian-8538323 June 2022
The show seasons are ALWAYS too short. I live for the days that these odd-ball English/Scottish/Irish/Wales detective shows ran endlessly. Please write and produce more more more.

The Main Character is ANNOYING
I reluctantly made it through the first episode. Watched about ten minutes of the second episode. The Harry character is SO rude and overbearing. I can't stand her rudeness to her son and daughter in law.

Captivating captures by cheeky, curious Prof Harry Wild (J
barbarashaver29 April 2022
Harry is played by an always compelling actress Jane Seymour.

Her resourceful helper, Fergus once mugged her to save his Da from a loanshark. Fergus is a natural, curious, intuitive and intelligent but fearless. He cares for his little sister and alcoholic Dad respectfully.

Jane decides to teach him and the art of deduction binds them together in successfully solving homicides. He inspires her forward despite her son's objections. Her son is the detective who should be solving the cases. Most enjoyable to watch as they find their timing and perfect the chemistry!
