I Like the Fact Tyson Wasn't Involved
jasonfalquist8 September 2022
I'm shocked by the terrible ratings and suspect half the people haven't even watched the show. The main actor does an excellent job of capturing the essence of Tyson and the first few episodes are pretty entertaining. My biggest knock on most biopics is how they allow the subject to influence the story which ultimately robs the movie/show of any authenticity. I love Mike Tyson and find him to be a compelling story teller, but allowing him to choose what goes in or out of this show would have been a mistake. If you're looking for garbage like that check out Bohemian Rhapsody, Ali, or Straight Out of Compton.

I'm sorry guys (those who gave it low marks)..

... you aren't seeing the forest through the trees! This show has potential to be a great overall series and I'll go in record and say that it will garner Emmy nominations - give it time and you'll see the high quality in every aspect of this show.

After 2 episodes

The visual story telling is amazing using backdrops and on locations scenes in NYC. The beginning of the series adds a thin layer to what was already known about mike and what can be found in his book by taking keywords and dramatizing it but doesnt over do it. The kid that plays teen Tyson is amazing and looks just like him which is really suprising Otherwise I would aliken this series to another Pam and Tommy I feel like Hulu is trying to bank off. It gets saltier knowing that mike tyson didnt back this at all and seems like a money grab before the actual film by Scorsese does him justice. Although just being a carbon copy with less emphasis on actual boxing I like how they fill in the gaps in history by making well shot and put together scenes that add to the legacy, but we will see if it gets better or worse. Granted how much I already know about Mike's bio I find myself more interested in the fabled or made up scenes and imagery then the actual story.

Too fast
michaelmail-97-52006028 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The pacing of this show is all over the place, it jumps around really fast and the fighting is just bad. For some reason it looks like young Mike tyson is CGI and if he is then it's bad at some points. The acting is good for the side characters, but the acting of Mike tyson is cringe and robotic. I thought Jamie Foxx was going to play Tyson, but here's to hoping they make a movie with Jamie Foxx as Mike tyson rather than this guy. I also hear that Tyson has no input on this as well and it shows, i also highly doubt Tyson was as dumb as they portray him in this series. There is only 2 episodes out right now but so far I'm pretty disappointed with the direction they decide to go with this.

Give it a shot.....7.5/10
Madmartigan175 June 2023
The first five minutes in I was thinking I may just turn it off and browse for another hour on what to watch next. The reason I felt this way is because the lead character didn't look like Tyson to me.....but let me tell you, he grows on you. His acting is really solid and he's built like Mike, which is not an easy task to have that physical stature. The way it's filmed, the acting, the music, the length of the episodes, are all great. I think they did a stand up job with this mini series. When each episode ended, I found myself looking forward to the next one, and the next one, until we reach the final round. Give it a shot.

underwhelming
sochima-3264022 September 2022
I agree with the average user rating of about a 6. Heavy narration seems to be trending in shows/films lately and this show takes full advantage, every other scene is narrated. They should have limited the narration to the scenes that seem to be mimicking a ted talk. This show is a bit low brow and lazy for my taste, but for me, the most interesting parts were, one, his relationship with his mother who seemed to have emotional problems and spoke very bluntly, yet with care in her facial expressions. I like how the actress played that role. And two, his relationship with Don King, how he admired Don but mistrusted him at the same time. I can't say this is a quality series, but it's OK for what it is.

The show is really good, disappointed in hulu
samuel-granados1830 August 2022
I'm not sure why they didn't involve Mike Tyson in this. Tyson seems disappointed that they didn't listen to him. I really wonder what they did to upset him. It looks like he's mad that they ripped off most of what he said during his undisputed stand up talk. So in a way Mike should get writing credits, which I agree he should. This would make the most sense.

This show is really good, the main actor did a great job portraying him. It's shot incredibly well and the script is solid. Playing Mike can go very wrong, and they surprisingly pulled it off so far.

If I'm rating the show it's a 10, but the fact that Mike didn't sign off on it rubs me the wrong way.

No mike tyson
cjward-025319 September 2022
I understand how lots of people might give it a low score because Mike Tyson doesn't approve of the show, but the show itself is really good and very deep. I wish Mike had more to do with the production but if it were me I wouldn't want this show to air either, but it's a good show. Whether it's all the true or not only mike Tyson knows, and I'm not gonna take another persons telling of someone's life to heart, but all I know is, it's a good show. The rape scene is where I assume he wouldn't definitely not approve of and honestly at this point I'm just typing words cause I guess you need to write 600 characters in order to make a review but I said what I said, I'm making an unbiased review, it's a good show, well acted, well written, and that's it. Whether it's all true or not I'm not sure, and I love mike Tyson but I have my own life and I watch this show for entertainment that's it. It's entertaining and well put together, no matter the way the show goes my view on Mike Tyson isn't going to change. He's still one of the best heavyweight boxing champions of all time and even after watching this show and feeling like I know him more, I don't, so my opinion won't change.

"Mike" is a good biopic, but the pacing of the story and the in-between narration hurt this series.
chrisl-5038228 November 2022
I understand that a lot of people on social media were upset with Mike Tyson not being a part of his own story. People were equally upset with him not receiving any compensation for the biopic. I understand the anger and disappointment; however, if Mike Tyson had control of his own story it's possible that certain aspects of himself would not have been shown. The Hulu presented biopic, "Mike" is meant to leave the viewer with having to formulate their own opinion.

Mike Tyson and Don King were both well-portrayed. It felt like you were watching them play themselves. There are a total of 8 episodes with 22 minutes or so to each episode. Personally, I would have liked if the episodes were longer and would not have minded if there were multiple seasons to this biopic.

I listen to and watch Teddy Atlas' YouTube podcast called "The Fight Game," and he has talked about Cus D'Amato at length and never once talked poorly about him. Teddy Atlas was a "street tough" himself and neither he nor Cus I think knew how to address Mike Tyson's behavior. I understand that I am only basing my opinion off of Teddy Atlas so I do not truly know if Cus D'Amato was portrayed accurately. I think it leaves the viewer once again having to formulate their own opinion on who was actually in Mike Tyson's life to support him and who was there to only manipulate him. It left me wondering about Cus D'Amato's intentions, but I've heard consistently that he believed in him and treated him like family. Cus D'Amato, by the time he met Mike Tyson, was older and had lived for boxing and I think that was his way of teaching him about life and showing him love. Cus D'Amato's unwavering support of Mike Tyson I believe eventually pushed Teddy Atlas away.

I think the biopic does a good job of also holding Mike Tyson accountable for his own behaviors, that although a victim of trauma and being used by unsavory people he also made poor choices and hurt a lot of people, physically and emotionally.

I was not too fond of the boxing scenes and wish they were a bit longer. I understand it's about his story, but the boxing scenes also matter. For a figure that can be so polarizing I also wish they went slower with telling Mike Tyson's story. In some ways it felt rushed. The in-between narrating was excessive and took away from certain moments. It felt like literally in every scene there was some kind of narration. I don't need it all the time to understand the point. In some ways it also felt like the writer/director were trying too hard. When Mike Tyson was shown on stage there were some scenes where you could see the line of his bald cap. It might sound trivial, but for a major streaming service you have to do better.

It's a good biopic, but you don't need to watch it more than once. A 6/10 rating is more than fair.

Creative, Stylist, great performances
getglamd9 September 2022
Even though Mike is not involved, they do him great justice. The cinematography is amazing. The storytelling is really creative. All the actors do an amazing job, especially Trevante, by embodying Mike's wild but serious spirit. I'm hooked. Each episode is really intriguing and keeps me wanting to watch more. I love the nostalgia of the 90's. All the music, clothes, props really take you back. The handle his story by holding nothing back, it doesn't paint him to be all bad or all good, just a deeply flawed man from a really colorful past. I don't see how anyone can not like this. Each episode does a good job of capturing moments from his life, all of which I had no clue about and wanted to do research of my own. If you want an easy binge, watch this show.

It's an OK watch - if your expectations are low
kzjbdz15 September 2022
The story telling, the acting, the style in which its shot, the way it unpacks the events of Tysons life is all 'OK'.

Nothing here particularly impressive, no new insights for those who have followed Tysons journey and without Mike Tysons personal input, it feels both unofficial and a little surface level - not really tackling the complexity of the man or the circumstances of each of the events that unfold.

If you watch it knowing that it isn't very deep, is unofficial and the acting and production is 'ok' you will likely find enough to consider it enjoyable and pass the time. If you expect and want more than that, you will be disappointed.

6 stars just airs in the side that the majority will see it for what it is, I can see why you would also give it only a couple of stars if you went in expecting more than what's on offer.

Meh
steven-p-williams-cpt9 September 2022
Comes out strong first few episodes then becomes a snoozer. Writing gets worse and worse and what should be an easy story to tell as is and be intriguing. It's like they spent all their time money and good efforts in the beginning and then let it go. I can see why Tyson doesn't appreciate the D level effort. Can't wait to see a well done version of this done soon. He's got lots of bad parts of his life but the sloppy way they did some of these come across more as hit piece than unbiased story telling. They made the story of one of the most interesting people in the last 50 years boring. That's almost impressive.

Learned alot more about Mike Tyson
Prophetik16 September 2022
I learned alot more about Mike Tyson in this series. It makes alot more sense how Mike Tyson ended up broke. Starting from his child hood and losing alot early he did not have many role models and many people who actually cared for him. It seems almost everyone around him didn't have his best interest. But one thing there is Mike Tyson defenitley is someone to look up to in the process of being nothing to something.

All he really knew Is one thing and he grew up and became rich off that. It's funny you never know that one thing you're completely good at it could make you super rich and famous, over all this was a good series and the plot was always on point.

Coming along just fine...I'm enjoying it
davidvliet26 August 2022
I think the format is clever and it's an interesting approach. A little bit like The Rock (which is terrific). The ratings will pick up over the season. Give it a shot. It's a great looking production with a number of different Mike's that do a beautiful job. The soundtrack is really sharp - they clearly spared no expense on rights and it's worth it.

Harvey Keitel really is amazing in the production and the love and care Cus D'Amato has for Tyson is sensitivity displayed. He's so nuanced as always.

The fight recreations, which I typically dislike are great bring back the nostalgia of the era, the actor that plays Mike in the ring is a dead ringer.

Everyone under estimates Tyson if you ask me. The show makes it clear that to underestimate Mike was and is a mistake.

Nope..
NullUnit28 August 2022
Any series with narration is nothing short of LAZY. If the story can't be told on screen, without narration, it needs to be written better.

To have this series narrated in a voice trying to match Tyson's speech issues is simply a poor choice.

I lasted an episode and a half and just couldn't tolerate the narration any longer - and there was nothing which was really that compelling. I love Keitel's work and was stoked when I saw him in this.. but the way the series is written is just REALLY sloppy and lazy. It's RELYING on the narration.. making it all the more poorly written.

It wasn't until after I saw the first episodes that I learned Mike Tyson actually had NOTHING to do with this series...so.. what's the point. A biographical series without any input from the subject who is still very much alive and well seems clearly destined for wild leaps of fiction and inconsistencies.

The undisputed best show on TV.
gregorymandarano-9856825 August 2022
It's phenomenal. Incredible everything. I'm shocked at how good it was.

Every writer should watch this show. It does everything right. It's exciting. Very very emotional. Amazing character work. Great soundtrack. Even the structure is impressive. It's a treasure trove of lessons and extremely entertaining. The second episode was even better than the first.

Blunt and brash look at the tragic up and down life of Mike as he's always behind the 8 ball!
blanbrn17 September 2022
"Mike" an original bio series from "Hulu" is one interesting and entertaining watch if you like and enjoy sports, as I remember growing up with Iron Mike as he stamped his fists and impacted culture.

The series episodes explores and showcases his tough upbringing on the mean streets, and how he was rescued by Cus D' Amato and trained to become a fighting monster, along the way it was interesting to see how Mike developed love and trust.

However later his marriage to actress Robin Givens and signing with promoter Don King you see how Mike became their easy meal ticket, as he became world champion.

Only things would worsen for the bad man on the planet after he encountered beauty queen Desiree, as the jail experience would also transform Mike. Finally in a gross and barbaric manner Mike became a cannibal. Overall well done series that looks at Mike's wild and somewhat tragic life and career, a watch for any boxing or Tyson fan.

Fantastic! Must See! Even if you are not a boxing fan!
johnklinton1 September 2022
You do not need to be a boxing fan to relate to this outstanding show.

Excellent , sharp writing and clever use of the live stage show and flashbacks. Storytelling is fresh and poignant.

Mike tells the story of a man on a mission to find the love he never got and discover who he is. It is brutal, sad and funny.

I was touched by the sadness in Mike as his destiny was fulfilled. The dream that he never really wanted but was reachable by his determination and grit.

A truly moving performance by Harvey Keitel Trevante Rhodes nails it. From the live stage show to the earliest days of his carrer

Only two episodes in, and I think a golden globe is waiting in the wings

Hats off to the creative team behind Mike. Whoever they may be.

Story Without "Iron Mike" !?
unpaid_movie_critic26 August 2022
Mike Tyson was, is, and will stay in a boxing history without doubt. He is one of the greatest boxer and his legacy will live probably till box will be not interesting. However, besides his boxing career, he is well known for troubles, and conflicts. Unfortunately, his life outside of the ring created an unpleasant image about him and that like a Will Smith-Chris Rock slapping incident. Nobody will ever forget because some of the things will remain permanently on the Internet, books, newspapers, etc. Sadly, but Mike Tyson without his coach Constantine D'Amato is a different person.

Mike (TV Mini Series) is similar to "Iron Mike" without his coach who has been like a father figure. Once you start watching it, you will feel a tasteless scenario with some strange feeling about cash-grab. Personally, do not want watch it because it is not about an undisputed champion, it's about guy with tiger and crazy tattoo on a face. Most of the documentaries or recordings of boxing matches are worth much more in terms of transparency, history, and even inspiration. Thanks for effort but I pass on it.

Good series
kate_buckley17 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Well made show with great acting. Interesting story line - I felt like I learnt a lot more about Mike Tyson than I knew before. The main actor obviously put in a lot of effort to bulk up for the role. The guy who plays Don King is good too. I know Mike Tyson was not involved with this series but I think that can happen when your life is in the public domain. Sometimes it's the only way to get an accurate portrayal/unbiased view. 8 episodes was about right. The episodes are short. I would recommend this show if you are interested in Mike Tyson or if you are interested in boxing. Over all worthwhile.

Excellent telling of his journey
Jared-flynn2228 August 2022
Undisputed Truth was an amazing book in which Mike gave full input on. This series seems to replicate the storyline and ideals from that book. Although Mike Tyson is not happy about his non-inclusion in this show, I think even he will accept it and like it after he watches. The first two episodes were great and hopefully it continues on that path.

I only gave a 9/10 because I felt Cus' father-type relationship towards Mike needed to be shown more for viewers to understand the impact of his loss on Mike. Yes, there was a lot shown, but perhaps Mike himself in his own actions, created other storylines throughout his tumultuous career/life that will take more screen time then what justly should have been.

Powerful insightful well worth the watch!
maffyfitz30 August 2022
I loved I Tonya and I am loving MIKE for many of the same reasons. I have so much more empathy for Mike Tyson. His talents are undeniable and yet he struggles because the cards are stacked against him. He is a brilliant athlete who struggled and was taken advantage of and he became a punchline but MIKE explores his humanity. The first episode explores his childhood and it is heartbreaking. It shows how difficult it is to succeed even if you are arguably one of the most talented athletes in the world. I think the show treats Mike Tyson's story with respect while leaning in to what a complicated person he is and why. I am routing for him and cannot wait for episode 3!

The acting, writing and directing are excellent

I needed a new show and this is it!
