My Life with the Walter Boys (2023)
generic teen show
I disagree with the folks saying it's so weird she's being romantically pursued by her adoptive brothers. I don't recall her being legally adopted. The boy's parents are her legal guardian until she's 18 and she's already 16. Jackie would only be living with them for less than 2 years until she goes away to college/Princeton. She has no bond with any of the family members except the 2 boys pursuing her. The parents barely even talk to her. She would have no reason to stay in touch with them after high school unless she really wanted to. It's very realistic if this happened irl that a teenage girl in a house full of hormonal boys would be into her. The only way this wouldn't happen was if she was super unattractive.
The character Jackie is smart, athletic, and good at everything she does. Personality wise she's nice but unremarkable. IMO Cole's attracted to her sadness, bc he's sad about his football injury and future plans so he's bonding to that emotion with her. He sees her as the only person more depressed than me, so she gets me.
Alex wants to be her savior, the one that makes her happy, the stereotypical white knight. Overall it's a basic teen show but it is entertaining and you connect to the characters which makes you wanna see what happens next.
Biz Kimden Kaçiyorduk Anne? (2023)
it's okay
I liked the suspense but it starts becoming long and drawn out by episode 5. It becomes repetitive. In the beginning they say they have to lay low and not attract attention but in every single episode they do things that bring attention to themselves. This would have been better as a movie to get straight to the point instead of a series. There are too many fluff scenes and fluff dialogue. The cast is good looking and the location settings are beautiful. They're staying at 5 star hotels and blowing through money fast. Alot of their problems wouldn't have happened if they lived a simple life so I guess the story is not supposed to make sense or be logical. Still a good watch to pass time or before bed.
Marriage Story (2019)
beautiful acting
I really miss movies like this where it's all about the acting. No gimmicks no special effects. Scarlett and Adam were equally amazing in this film although the film gives Adam more scenes and is more sympathetic to his character, I don't think either outperformed the other. Nowadays Scarlett is known for Marvel but I've always enjoyed her acting style pre-Marvel since the 2000s. I've also loved Adam Driver since Girls on HBO. Both are extremely talented and deserve all their success. There is not one flaw in this film. Even the supporting actors did an amazing job, including the child actor. Genuine performances all around which is also attributable to the director and writers. Hollywood please make more films like this!
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
solid film
The best thing about this film is that it's visually beautiful the setting, the costume design, and the under water world was absolutely gorgeous. The storyline had a nice flow from beginning to end. The action and Sci fi was entertaining. Solid directing and acting. Angela Bassett was the most compelling actor in this film. She carried the first half of this film on her back and it's close to 3 hrs long. She was definitely snubbed at the Oscar's this year. I watched both films and Angela definitely outperformed JLC for supporting actress. Honorable mention also goes to the actor who played Namor (villain). During his scenes I couldn't take my eyes off of him. I hope to see him in more roles. Where the movie lacked was in that tension heart racing feeling that action-dramas are supposed to evoke. Also there was zero comic relief. The film maintained a serious tone all through out, in contrast with other Marvel films. There were maybe 3 or 4 times throughout the 2.41 hr film where they even attempted a joke, and they weren't funny or landed flat. Even with these flaws, overall it's entertaining.
65 (2023)
ummm idk
The movie would be great if there was some dialogue. The characters barely talk to each other. It's really questionable why the decision was made to have a language barrier between the only 2 main characters. All we know is that some guy has a sick daughter (they don't say what illness) goes on a voyage that will help his daughter (they don't say what exactly he's looking for). He's the pilot of a ship full of ppl (who are the other ppl on the ship and why a child was on board, they don't say). Ship crashes and him and a random 9 yr old are the only survivors. The action and effects are really good if you're into Sci Fi. It's only an hour and 20 minutes so an easy watch.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
trippy campy unique
So I typically don't watch this type of genre of movie. It's a campy comedic-drama. It's silly and heartwarming. It's not for everyone. The movie is not meant to be taken seriously. This is the type of movie people study in film school. There's so many messages in this movie that could be dissected but this movie is too long and irritating at times for me to watch more than once. One message was that doing something deemed weird may unlock a new/better life for yourself. I understand why it won so many awards due to the amount of effort and creativity it takes to put a film like this together. However Jamie Lee Curtis didn't do anything spectacular in this film to deserve an Oscar. The other awards I can agree with bc the film caters to the more artsy eccentric crowd. The lead actress and supporting actor deserved their award imo. I rated 7 because the film takes too long to get interesting. The first 45 minutes of the film is pretty tough and I would not watch this film again.
13 Reasons Why (2017)
frustrating characters
I have tried so many times to sit down and watch this show all the way through and I always lose interest. Maybe I'm too old for this show. Maybe it's more interesting for people in their teens to mid 20s. Almost every character is irritating, the dialogue is pretentious and repetitive. There's nothing I like about the show. It kept my interest until the middle of season 2 just to see how the story would unfold, and then I stopped caring and turned it off. Season 2 is the civil trial against the school for inaction/neglect where everyone claims they want to help Hannah get justice yet the very same people get on the stand and make comments that hurt Hannah's image. Also, TV is for entertainment. No one wants to hear the R word every 10 mins if no one is actually going to do anything about it. It may be realistic that most victims do not come forward and when they do it's not taken seriously or there's not enough evidence to prosecute, however it's frustrating to watch on the screen, and it even further trivializes what victims go through. This show must be so triggering for any actual victims watching and I'm not sure if it's worth it.
You People (2023)
Cringe
What is even the point of this movie. The Hollywood liberal agenda is in full force in this movie. An entire movie about identity politics in 2023. I would leave a better review if the jokes were actually funny. The jokes would have been funny 10-15 yrs ago. The dialogue sounds like it was written by an out of touch 40yr old. It's a shame bc of all the big name celebrities that appeared but were not utilized appropriately. This is the first Eddie Murphy movie where I didn't laugh. The idea wasn't bad but poor execution. The writing was lazy and leaves alot to be desired. Too heavy reliance on identity politics and awkward moments.
The Circle (2020)
background show
Good if you just want some low brow entertainment or some background noise while cooking and cleaning. It's irritating that whoever is the most popular influencer during the first few votes typically holds all the power til the end of the season but that's how human interaction typically goes in real life. One or two ppl emerge as the leaders and everyone just follows. The sidekick players and the newer players typically end up in 3rd or 4th place by sucking up to the popular players who typically win. But they're supposed to be competing for money. The show would be more juicy if the contestants were more bold and scheming to eliminate the popular contestants. It's just irritating watching people give the game away to others and get themselves eliminated. Every season is pretty much the same. Season 5 is the most recent and has pretty good drama compared to the previous season.
House of the Dragon (2022)
weak character development
I'm having a hard time caring about any of these characters and I'm 4 episodes in now. With GOT I was immediately connecting with the characters. This show is missing emotion and its missing strong sub plots. The character development is weak so far. I hope they are just laying the groundwork and it gets better but GOT was immediately engaging. House of Dragons already has the blueprint why not just follow it and improve on that. This family feud is dragging and it's not as interesting as the writers think it is. The dialogue is seriously lacking. Where is the wit and backbiting, and clever insults? I read that HOD has already been renewed for a second season. I am determined to stay the course and finish season 1, and if I am not satisfied, I'll be done with the series altogether.
Mike (2022)
underwhelming
I agree with the average user rating of about a 6. Heavy narration seems to be trending in shows/films lately and this show takes full advantage, every other scene is narrated. They should have limited the narration to the scenes that seem to be mimicking a ted talk. This show is a bit low brow and lazy for my taste, but for me, the most interesting parts were, one, his relationship with his mother who seemed to have emotional problems and spoke very bluntly, yet with care in her facial expressions. I like how the actress played that role. And two, his relationship with Don King, how he admired Don but mistrusted him at the same time. I can't say this is a quality series, but it's OK for what it is.
Cobra Kai (2018)
teen show
In my teen years I would probably love this show. As an adult, it's a decent show but after the 3rd season it's not as mentally stimulating and its more of a show I put on for background noise now. Even though it's based on 80s movies, the entire aesthetic of the show doesn't have to be 80s inspired. A witty nod to the 80s would be sufficient. Even some of the clothes worn on the show look very outdated like all the wardrobe came from an old thrift shop with all the plaid shirts. Kids of today don't dress like that. And when's the last time you seen a teen in a spikey mohawk? Some of the actors are good and some are atrociously bad. So many cringey and cheesey moments but overall a fun show.
Insatiable (2018)
hilarious dark comedy
This is one of the funniest shows I've seen in a really long time. The storyline is unpredictable and with lots of drama, highs, and low. Lots of inappropriate jokes and ridiculousness. Do not believe the low reviews. This show is super engaging and entertaining. I'm a big fan of Dallas Roberts facial and physical acting.
Infidelity (2020)
solid movie
I am a fan of Tyrone Jackson films. If you like this you need to watch Turned Out which is even better. Infidelity has a very serious plot with a lot of toxic behavior however they were able to include humorous moments throughout the movie. I found myself laughing at certain moments and thinking maybe I shouldn't be laughing at this. Very entertaining movie.
Malignant (2021)
Ridiculous
This movie is bloody but I didn't find it scary due to it's far fetched storyline. I rolled my eyes during parts of this movie and started playing on my phone. I can't believe this type of movie made it into theaters. I've watched low budget D-list movies with better storylines.
The Photograph (2020)
nice story just dull and long
The storyline is strong but the execution is weak. There could be a bit more humor, a bit more tension, and more heartfelt conversations between Issa and Lakeith. Issa acting was a bit dry, she does better in comedic roles. She looked beautiful in the movie and her outfits were on point. I do like the message of the movie. It's not a bad movie just needed more personality.
Turned Out (2019)
I love hood movies
If you like this specific type of genre of low budget movies this is one of top tier ones when it comes to storyline, dialogue, humor, and sexual content.
