solid start for season 2, but nothing mindblowing
thetypingavocado12 January 2022
I like this premiere, but not in love with it. The VFX and Visuals are on par with season 1 (still very great), and it keeps the same sincerity as well.

Although one thing I cringed at is when they say that the twins are 15 years old, even though they look far older... just a nitpick, but it sticks with me.

And the classic angsty teen thing is still there, but it's understandable, for the character.

I like the tease at the end, cuz it could lead to multiple possibilities.

Good start, but I truly hope that the season has higher highs than season 1.

What Lies Beneath is more focused on character development than action, but it shines on the technical side of things
Holt34413 January 2022
Gregory Smith returns to direct the season premiere of Superman and Lois. "What Lies Beneath" follows Lois and Clark struggle as a couple and the aftermath of the season finale. I can only praise the script and direction, Gregory Smith did a terrific job and a big reason is him being an actor himself and a great director too. There's also some great cinematography and the visual effects are also strong, keeping the same quality from the previous season if not better. But back to the direction, Gregory Smith nailed it with this episode.

What Lies Beneath begins the season with lots of promise, building on the plot and character arcs from the previous season and especially the season one finale. Brent Fletcher & Todd Helbing wrote the script for this episode and the latter actually wrote the season 1 finale, I couldn't see any flaws regarding the writing in this episode, it was the quality we are used in seeing and the same is said regarding the other departments, the quality is there. I actually thought this was a solid season premiere, not the best as it didn't really pack a lot of punch like what we think a premiere would be, but what we got was a more dramatic episode with plenty of character development and plot development, ultimately building towards interesting story arcs.

I have read some criticism about the writing for Lois Lane in this episode and honestly I don't agree with them, it feels weird though how it took her 3 whole months, 1 or 2 months is understandable but let's get behind this. So we know from the previous season how Lois Lane lost a baby and how her mother left her when young, so her feelings in this episode is completely realistic towards Natalie. Another criticism was how Lois had more screen time and the show is called Superman and Lois so they should have equal amount of screen time, I was one of them who looked forward in seeing where they would take Lois Lane's character arc in this season and I think they went the right route. Did Superman's arc hold up to Lois? Time will tell as this episode was all about building towards the reveal of the next big bad and his relationship with the Army.

Lois

Decent episode to come back to, definitely not as strong as S1 so far in my opinion, some good superman scenes, the multiverse family daughter mom thing isn't for me I'm kind of sick of it, it's in all the movies and CW shows and I think it's run it's course

The one thing that really bugged me was Lois, she needed to chill the F Out, her character took a total 90 degree turn and I don't like it, screaming at everyone for stupid reasons.

At the end was that

Doomsday??? Would be awesome if it was. The effects are still movie worthy. Besides the action the show is a great family drama with extremely likable characters. The dynamics involving John and Natalie look very promising. Tyler continues to prove that he is probably the greatest Superman of all time; big and small screen ( never did like Reeves clumsy portrayal of Clark ). The first season was superb. Looks like another is forthcoming. Outstanding. Incidentally Tyler and Anderson were both werewolves in Teen Wolf. One of the better supernatural series.

Welcome Back Superman & Lois! Man I missed this show
ldamena12 January 2022
So happy it's back and with a great premiere to boot. Great character moments. Lois' struggle was real this ep but I'm glad she finally opened up about how she was feeling and is able to move on somewhat from her dilema. Clark was a cutie this ep but serious when he needed to be. I already don't like General Anderson. What is going on with Sarah and Jonathan being a typical 15 yr old was funny. Im in awe of the action scenes and that twist at the end? So excited to see where S2 is taking us.

It's back
michaelstonecipher12 January 2022
The only show on cw I still watch it has not disappointed me yet. I see why louis did what she did in the end asking Natalie and John to stay alot of it had to do with the daughter she lost and the memories of her mom abandoned her and her sister and both Natalie and her filling a void in their lives if anything with a strong friendship and louis helping steer Natalie to having a happier life later in her life.

What Lies Beneath
Prismark1017 July 2022
Somewhere underneath Smallville might be the big bad villain for the second season.

Until then this was a more of a soapy opener. Lois feels moody as she does not know what to do with her daughter from another multiverse.

This is bad news for Jonathan who is caught getting close up with a girl in his room.

As for Superman. New military honcho Lt Anderson wants Superman to stand for the American way and be a US only asset.

It makes Superman wish that he trademarked the 'S.'

It was obvious that Anderson will be a minor villain for this season. It rumbled along nicely but just a bit too much of domestics for my liking.

Superman and Lois gets even better, we all know the part that elevated this episode above each and every other show/film just recently. I love the show, it's just pure entertainment at it's core and the writers know not to mirror themselves, but mirror the comics. Good story, actors - everything.

A really solid premier to Season 2.

Warning: Spoilers
Let me just start by saying that my OG rating for this episode would be 8 or 9, but I'm giving it a 10 to balance out with the complete bogus reviews here.

Moving on, I loved that the music, cinematography and writing did not fail to impress me, as always.

I loved Lois' arc, and even more the fact that they wrapped it up in the pilot episode.

I generally like the direction in which they're heading though I would have preferred Brainiac to Doomsday.

Loved the drama, the heartwarming moments.

Ignore the reviews. The show is as good as the first season.

What the hell was that?
storm_rider_8823 February 2022

Worst season premiere ever! Horrible writing! Why are Lois, Sarah and Natalie so annoying?

Lois is overly defensive over things that are her problem. She can't handle Natalie being around so she takes it out on her family for 3 months.

Sarah obviously met someone at camp so she treats Jordan like crap.

Natalie was just told that she's in another dimension and even though people look the same, they are not the same people. Then she leaves school on her first day because no one recognizes her. Jesus H. Christ!!!

Incredibly bad writing OR incredibly bad acting. Either way it's the worst season premiere in history. I should cut my losses now and stop watching.

Great start to season 2
addicy12 January 2022
I hope Lois and Natalie become friends. Sam's replacement seems a little unusual for one, Clark is suspicious. One character stood out for me is Sarah. She returns home from camp and gives Jordan the cold shoulder. Something is definitely off about her. I'll try to figure it out before the next episode airs.

You think she'd tell her parents to take her to see Jordsn right away. That moment kinda stuck with me and threw me for a loop.

Dissapointing start to season 2.
Arch-Carl16 July 2022
I understand Lois is having difficulty and that's fine but dame this has a lot of wineing in it.

And please get rid of Natalie character she is just terrible and bad for the story and is just dragging it down constantly.

(Yeah watched a few episodes in before said this and does not get any better.)

The special effecs are great and superman and sons story are good shame about rest though being poor. And the whole military thing was exciting.

Up in the sky! Oh look, it's a bird! It's a plane! IT'S SUPERMAN!
wetmars30 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Season 2, here we go. At Kent Farm, Lex's daughter thinks this Lois is her mom, but Lex immediately steps aside telling her. The two get in the RV driving away. Three months later. Superman has gained popularity across Smallville. Sarah arrives out of the bus from camp reuniting with her parents. Lately, Lois' new paper company has been going through some trouble. Jordan arrives to meet Sarah asking if she could arrive at a pond in half an hour. Meanwhile, Jordan still had a career in Football. Oh look, Jothanhn now has a girlfriend.

Clark hears some trouble arriving in the ocean, but something is going wrong with his mind causing him to drop underwater. Superman snaps out of it respecting a Submarine crew of Koreans raising it. I must say, that shot of Superman flying above the ocean was top-notch! The crew celebrates after this thanking Superman. Lex is discussing with his daughter to not panic during School, and that any familiar faces are not the same person that she knew. Wow, she just called her dad "Henry." Yikes.

Lois arrives home LITERALLY WALKING IN JOTHNAHN HAVING "it" WITH CANDICE. She is upset ready to talk with the two. Superman arrives at some Military Base to discuss with a Lieutenant. Superman hears from Lois that she needs her, and he does arrive to hear the news. Okay, I completely forgot that Jonathan was 15. The two have a heated argument about all of this. Yeah, I do wonder what the hell is going on with Lois. Meanwhile, at the pond, Jordan impresses Sarah by showing her a bunch of candles floating in the waters.

Man, I do hope this Mayor Hart isn't a bad person. Heheheh. Clark comes to talk with Sarah's dad about his concerns about Lois. During the night, Nat arrives late to her father telling him about her trauma. Jesus Christ, I feel for her. Jordan arrives late. Yet, Lois is questioning him. I wouldn't blame her being on her mood since what recently happened with Jonathan, but I might be wrong as I have no experience with parenting lol.

Some kind of Earthquake happens disturbing the peace for a bit. Clark has a brief discussion with Lois. We get an explanation of why Lois has been acting all strange for three months because of Nat. This is sincerely heartbreaking, since when I've been sensitively emotional? Lol. Clark hears an earthquake as it wreaks havoc in Smallville. Earthquakes in Kansas? That is not normal... Superman continues saving lives until he arrives at a line seeing two Krypotians. This causes Superman's mind to go wack for a moment.

He arrives at the same Military Base questioning Lieutenant. Something is wrong with this guy. He has that bad vibe. Lois arrives at the Diner to meet Lex. Nat immediately walks out. Lois comes to apologize to her. Clark has a talk with his sons about what has happened. Clark walks out with his sons delivered with the news that Lex and Nat will live on the same farm with them. The rumbling is continuing coming from the deep depths of Earth... DOOMSDAY?

Thoughts?

"I am somewhat pessimistic with a second season. I do think the problem with the shows is that they go on for so long." I do have the same feeling, and I am genuinely worried, but we're not here for that.

An excellent slow start that is setting up the plot of Season 2, yes. I will keep on saying this - the characters always feel real about having problems in their life which give them more exploration. For example, the family drama between an emotional arc with Lois pays off in execution where she doesn't want to become her mother, etc.

I have no problem with the lack of action since this is the first episode focusing on the characters. I was completely invested throughout 42-minutes, but there is one flaw that I was having a struggle with is that they weren't showing us Nat's difficulties, but instead it was telling. I don't get the hate for Nat. She is supposed to be a character with flaws. Stop prematurely judging on characters before they develop more, lol. (( Yeah, I am behind, but my point stands. ))

From reading from negative reviews, this caught my attention. "Well this was awful. Lois behaving like a strict christian cult leader acting out on her boys for doing wrong." Oh wow, I guess underage intercourse is permitted but ok. That's messed up on every level, but ok. This review will not focus on negativity. Positivity is good. But still, it feels good to correct someone. Also very interesting to see Superman's relationship with the Military is now changed. Not bad on the new intro!

I truly forgot how phenomenal this show was, and it is amazing to feel the beauty again after five months. I am quite not sure if I stated this before, but here you go: Tyler Hoechlin is now my all-time personal favorite Superman from now on at this point. Sorry Christopher Reeves, but you're my second favorite even though. You're still great.

"Just... I guess the timing seems a little sus, no?"

10/10.

That's it! I'm giving up here!
fixxy7525 January 2022
Watched the whole 1st season. The season had its ups and downs and it was OK. Sort of!

I just watched the first episode of Season 2 and that's it. I'm giving up on this series.

Too much whining and moaning by Lois. This is a series for the women! Nope, not for me. I'm sorry, I don't have the strength for this anymore.

Superman and the Woman who Constantly Whines
man-9651312 January 2022
The program should be called "Superman and the Whiney Woman".

Too much time, far too much time, was devoted to Lois Lane in this episode. And Elizabeth Tulloch is too much of a light weight to handle this much screen time. Tulloch is by far the least interesting actress in the series. Any time she appears on screen it is like a great black hole opening up. I did not enjoy the opening episode of the second season at all.

There are certain conventions which must be followed in a super hero program. The writers of "Superman and Lois" just do not seem to understand that. They keep insisting on changing this series into something it is not. The result is that they alienate their core audience and fail to attract any other viewers. The writers need to rewatch the earlier Superman movies - they just lack a basic understanding of the nature of Superman.

All in all just a very disappointing start for a season premier.

Quite bad
pauli_gomez20 January 2022
This episode was not interesting at all. Anderson and most women acted like jerks. I get Anderson is the annoying soldier that does not understand that it is better not to antagonize Superman (and who thinks is perfectly good to stole his sign). I mean, I do not like it, I do not think is done well, but I understand it. Instead, I do not know why they decided to do the women so annoying. Natalie has been here for 3 months, she could be better. Sarah seems to be playing with Jordan, even when I think that will probably get better in the next episodes. But Lois behavior makes no sense, no matter what rationale the writers tried to feed us. It does not work, and it is a disservice to the character and to the actress. And the thing she does in the end, without consulting her family? Absurd!!

Oh, and Clark not telling anyone about his visions? It is out of character too.

10% story, 90% boredom
krulle2714 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
10% of the episode is actual story development, DOD is an ass, new "Superman" characters appearing, bad guy (or not) in the mine, very cool. 90% is uninteresting "character development", based around whiny teens and a pathetic Lois, all there to make us enjoy what I call an alibi episode. Hopefully it'll get better.

Where is Superman?
CriticalThought12 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Middle aged Lois acting exactly like a spoiled bratty teenager, and using the emergency thing.. because she's what? Jealous of her sons happiness?

"You are the alpha you set the tone"? Wtf? No she's met someone else and too spineless to tell the truth to Jordan and i'm pretty damn sure the one she met is a girl and she's now the LGBT token character.

Andersson is set up to be the typical white-man-bad in this season, because loving ones country and wanting it to be secure is what? That's right.. BAD!

Superman, what this show is supposed to be about, where is he? He's doing the same this he's always done, and getting pissed on for doing so.

Only reason this EP didn't get a 1 was because of how they set up this seasons "supervillain" Other than that it's just filled with cringe and skippable scenes without meaning, a typical highschool teen drama show filled with boring narratives.

Global Superman.
jamericanbeauty12 January 2022
I like Henry/Steel. I don't like his daughter. When I saw her name in the main cast, disappointment flooded me. I don't like mopey Sarah. I find Lois irritating. Now on to The Man of Steel. Superman's motto is: "Truth, Justice, and the American way." The CW has decided Superman, a symbol of hope, truth, justice and the American way is not acceptable because American exceptional and patriotism has become negative in recent years to Hollywood. You see it in their scripts and their politics. Superman belongs to the world now. Last season, Superman stopped an armed bank robbery in Mexico and there's nothing wrong with that. In real life, our American military and financial aid helps nations around the world, however a government and military's priorities are its own people. Period. I found it unpatriotic, insulting and disrespectful that Superman refused to pledge his allegiance and loyalty-first to The Dept of Defense and the country he represents - America. My grandparents and parents came from Jamaica for America's freedoms and opportunities. I love this country and everything it stands for. We are the world's beacon of hope, and that is why more immigrants come here than any other nation in the world. Shame on CW. I am done. You clearly don't want American viewers. Rely on global viewers. As for viewership, the numbers have declined. At first, Season One brought in a million-plus, but midway it fell under a million and the season finale had 622,000 viewers. I can see why. Too much Lois, too much Sarah and her family and the pc writing is creeping on in.
