For kids? Maybe.. excellent anyway? Definitely
pfne12 August 2021
So I was sat at home, bored. My kid was off doing whatever it is kids do when they're in their rooms. I was lazily flicking through Disney+ and spotted this show. I thought, "That'll do for the afternoon."

So there I was, a 42 year old flabby man watching a mystery show for kids... And it hooked me. The first coup of episodes drew me and I really wanted to know what happened to the missing girl and what the adults knew.

The kids in this show are all fantastic, they play their roles incredibly well. The core mystery is interesting and it turns and twists well through the whole show. It's paced incredibly well, with each episode only being around 20 minutes once intro and recaps etc are done.

All in all a fantastic show that keeps the intrigue up, the pace held and turns interesting and surprising.

Well worth a watch for adults... And kids too.

Creepily cute
arod_8524 March 2021
I have a younger teen daughter and when she was a child we enjoyed watching Disney shows like "Good Luck Charlie", "Shake It Up", and "Wizards of Waverly Place". I always loved watching Disney with her because it brought back the nostalgia of my childhood watching The Famous Jett Jackson, Fastforward, and Even Stevens. However, we both agree that they don't make them like that anymore. Until Secrets of Sulpher Springs. It reminds me of those "quality" Disney shows we remember from back in the day where the story was family oriented but engaging across the age span. This show was creepy and mysterious enough to keep you interested, but not so scary to deter younger children. Even my 38 year-old husband got into the series and got annoyed when we watched an episode without him and Insisted we rewind it. The plot and acting were fairly good for a Disney show. Not likely to win any awards or make it to the big screen, but it's good for what it is. Surprisingly, the children's acting is far superior to the adults' acting. Hopefully there is a season 2 coming soon.

Disney made a Twilight Zone episode into a series!
cyberknight19 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
If you are in doubt if you should or not watch this series, here's a quick check: if you like most of Disney Channel's series (shows like 'Whatever Place' and 'Whoever Montana'), then this series is probably not for you.

Remember Disney's "Dinosaurs" (1991)? It was NOT a children's show, although it was built to look so. It's the same with this show, it has a bunch of kids running around, doing some goofy things, but it's NOT a show aimed for children. That's not to say that it's not entertaining for children, but that it's not Disney Channel's regular brainless junk. It's more like an episode of "The Twilight Zone" (1959) rewritten as a series. Actually, it's so much like an episode of TTZ that some people may find it cliché. I, personally, don't think that's a problem, as long as the show is well done.

Spoiler alert! You should know the drill...

A girl goes missing, somehow causing a hotel to be closed. 30 years later, a man blows all his savings to buy the decayed hotel and move in with his unhappy and comprehensibly frustrated family, for reasons he can't/doesn't want to explain.

At first, nothing is explained, but the connection is established right in the first episode: some kids discover that there's a "portal" linking the present days with the past, around the time the girl disappeared.

The actors are good (and they improve as the series advances), the script is well written, the production is excellent (scenarios, musical score, props, background) and the pace is fast, with lots happening in the 25 min of each episode.

Of course, unlike "Dinosaurs," which was basically composed of unrelated episodes, this series tells a coherent story, so, there's a risk that the writers or the producers eventually do something wrong and break it, like padding the show with meaningless episodes or unnecessary drama. This review is based on the first season (11 episodes) and I'm hoping they already have mapped the road to finish the series with a proper ending (because the story being told is only good and worth telling if it has a conclusion), instead of letting it derail and get cancelled, like so many series before (damn, even "Dinosaurs" got an ending, and it didn't required one!)

I didn't expect a Disney show to be this good.
turner-bugzyblue-james9416 January 2021
I wasn't thinking a Disney Show could be this good. I love how it actually has a plot line and not just random episodes. The mystery is intriguing and makes me want to watch more. Definitely the best Disney channel show in years. I like the direction Disney is going and hope to get more shows like this in the future. More dark and mystery shows like this with an actual plot line please Disney!

Really good for all ages
bryanwilson-5103116 January 2021
This seems out of place on Disney. I hope it doesn't get snatched to Disney+, but wow everyone in my household is waiting to see what happens next. The mystery and suspense is intense and they really set it up to continue to build. Not sure how long they can make it last, seasons wise, but man I'm ready for the next few episodes. Only downside of the show is waiting til next week. Louisiana as the background is beautiful and really add to the suspense. Give it a shot, you won't be disappointed. It does have some "scary" scenes that had my daughter turning away but for the most part it's not a "scary" show but more of an edge of your seat mystery thriller! Can't wait until they start to reveal some of the mysteries!!

Don't want to spoil anything but there are so many similarities in the plot that it can't be a coincidence.

Cant wait for the next episode!
crussum16 January 2021
My kids made me watch this, so I wasn't expecting much from a Disney channel pilot. But we all are really excited for the next episode. From the storyline, to the acting, this show so far is better than anything they've ever put out. We were all on the edge of our seats waiting for what would happen next.

Reviewlux: Secrets of Sulphur Springs
reviewerlux7 February 2021
Secrets of Sulphur Springs is a mystery series that follows 12-year-old Griffin Campbell and his thrill-seeking friend, Harper as they uncover a secret portal that leads them to uncover clues in order to solve their town's biggest unsolved mystery and save a past child from going missing, never to be seen again.

When I first saw the trailer, which advertised the series as horror films, I did not plan to watch the films, but after reading several reviews and summaries, I decided to try the series, although still hesitant.

I have now seen the first six episodes and love the series! Each scene is full of suspense and action and the sets and effects are amazing! The acting is outstanding and the episodes are never boring. I did not, however, find this series to fit under the horror category. I am personally more sensitive to scary and horrorous films and did not find this series frightening. I would recommend for kids under the age of eight to watch with a trusted adult or family member, since there were a few scenes and concepts that could be scary for younger viewers.

Secrets of Sulphur Springs is rated PG for mild scares and concepts that may frighten younger viewers. In the episodes I have seen (Episodes 1-6) there hasn't been any inappropriate language or violence.

The show is chilling, mysterious, family friendly, and very different from most of the Disney Channel shows. It features impressive effects, great acting, and suspenseful time travel scenes. I recommend this series and am looking forward to the next episode!

The Secrets of Sulphur Springs
union-kursk12 August 2022
This series is about teens, who find a secret portal to travel back in time. The series is set in USA and starts in 2021. Acting in this series so amazing! Preston Oliver as Griffin and Kyliegh Curran as Harper. My favourite character is Savannah, because she can be both funny and serious. I think this is exelent series for teenagers, who love fantasy and adentures. I give this series 7 stars, because he has cool cast and interesting plot. Go and watch it soon!

Kid's time travel
ckr-7193415 July 2021
Really liked. Especially because nothing was jumping out (like in Stranger Things). But it bothered me the characters were wearing sweaters in Louisiana in August. Have you ever been to the south in August? Nobody would be wearing a sweater! It's hot, muggy, and humid.

fun for awhile
SnoopyStyle7 February 2024
12 year old Griffin Campbell moves to the small town of Sulphur Springs with his parents who are refurbishing the abandoned Hotel Tremont from his father's childhood. He is befriended by classmate Harper and is told about the ghost of a girl named Savannah Dillon who went missing thirty years earlier. The two young kids find a bunker underneath the hotel and go through a passage back in time. They discover that Griffin's father and Harper's mother had known Savannah, and that they are hiding secrets from their past.

It's a good initial premise for a Disney channel sci-fi fantasy mystery. I like the search for Savannah. I like the two lead kids. Eventually, it's another time travel show which gets too convoluted. That happens sometimes when time travel muddies the waters and the show struggles to keep twisting. It does some ill-advised supernatural turns. A show can lose cohesion over time. By the third season, it's jumping over a time traveling ghost shark, but it was fun for a season or two.

Bad writing or bad acting?
jezfernandez28 March 2022
This is a plot-driven show, so I'm really not sure if some of the shoddiness is down to bad writing or bad acting.

The kids are generally okay: Griffin and Harper are the most competent, and Savannah's acting has dramatically improved since S1. But the replacement actor for Topher is *toe-curlingly* bad. I mean seriously awful. It's as if they needed to find a new actor whose sole qualification was to look as much like the first guy as possible.

In any event, the entire show is instantly forgettable, though immediately watchable.

Kindergarten version of Dark
Freezing_Walkers10 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I guess it's ok for kids, but I felt no mystery or suspense in the series.

In fact, it reminded me of Netflix Dark. Too much similarities with its storyline.

The character of Topher was the only good one, which made me smile. Otherwise, the show is just on borderline watchable, and easily forgettable.

Wonderful new show
dieseldog3337 December 2021
I can't wait for season 2. Very well done. Good actors. Fun story but also tense and sometimes scary. It's actually quite an original storyline. It sucked me in and I couldn't stop watching. Such a cliffhanger at the end.

Just make it a film please instead of a series
florin-radu-343-90009415 February 2021
A Disney movie is by definition a story waiting to be told, you just need to find the right words and the right context to spread it through. Butchering a potentially enjoyable feature film into thin slices that are delivered as a series kills all the fun and should not be allowed. Our kids deserve better than that. The show is great but the packaging is totally wrong.

Entertaining

It's very familiar to the Dark's plot but way more relaxed vibe though, less stressful and actually interesting.

Goofs Galore!
dogs_rule23 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
All in all for a children's sci-fi show, it's entertaining and a rather extensive plot that may be too difficult for much younger viewers to follow. It may also, for younger viewers be a little too scary in the third season as the show takes a much darker turn. It seems as though the writers lost track of previous storylines as there are so many goofs in this series, it's becoming difficult to keep up. Who was the person in the hoodie stocking Savannah in season 1? How did Savannah use the portal to go to 2020 in season 1, episode 11 when Sam hadn't been introduced yet and the portal wasn't working yet in her year? Season 3, episode 4 we meet a 31 year old Daisy. Daisy was 14 in 1930, in 1962 she would have 46! That's just a few.

Surprisingly good
hughmcgill21 January 2022
As a recent subscriber of Disney+ it's now my new favourite streaming service and contains lots of gems. The Secrets of Sulphur Springs being one of them. I pressed Play on the first episode out of curiosity not expecting too much but found myself drawn in and couldn't stop myself from watching one episode after another, helped by the fact they are very short. There's a classic 'family move into old haunted house' style to the film but there's more to it than that and the central premise and how you see events unfold is really well done and although there's an eerie quality to it along with mild suspense, overall it's quite gentle, which I have to say I prefer to the modern trend for portraying/displaying psychological torture and physical abuse. For me the kids all steal the show, especially Topher and the Twins. I liked that they closed off the main storyline in season 1 but left the premise alive and well with a nice little cliffhanger for season 2, which I hope they make. If the adults could match the children I'd have given it a 10! :)

I guess for kids it's okay.
deloudelouvain13 July 2021
To be honest, after reading all the positive reviews, I was expecting something really good but that's just not the case. I admit there's some mystery that keeps you mildly interested but that's about it. I think I watched nine episodes, had to wait too long for the next one and so I forgot about the story and wasn't interested by it anymore. The kids are annoying to watch. I get it that it's Disney and I guess younger people will find this very entertaining, but in my case I'm just way too old for this kind of series.

Harper was the reason for giving this show a chance. Very entertaining and had unexpected twists. Storyline was clear and characters were given good amounts of screen time. Loved the diversity.

This show is the bomb!
munyuaalice7 February 2023
Secrets of Sulphur Springs is awesome! I loved everything about it from the niceness of the main characters to the horror within. Personally, I feel that season 2 is a little bit scarier than season one Can't wait for season 3.

I like how the show is suitable for both adults and kids. I watched it with my kid & we were both scared, but also intrigued by the other concepts of the show.

I love shows like this; i.e. They're clean, laid back, creative, mind boggling & of course kinda scary (but in an innocent way).

The cast & production crew did an amazing job. Beautiful!!!! I simply love secrets of Sulphur springs.
