Lighter touch
Leofwine_draca26 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
LUELLA is a SAINT episode with a lighter touch than some, even by the standards of the series. Templar hooks up with an old buddy - David Hedison - whose appetite for high living soon leads him into a blackmail plot. The rest of the episide is taken up by boisterous fight scenes and some amusing references to the James Bond franchise, which of course Moore would later front.

Totally different and that's the special plus
oe-laub16 April 2021
I completely disagree with the reviewer from 9th February 2021.

This episode was almost insane, totally different and with great performances.

YES, if you except a straight forward mystery and seriousness, this is not for you, but come on, THE SAINT had 117 episodes, so of course there also can be comedy episodes like this one.

David Hedison is the jolly fool in it, but very likeable (the scene with the two doors as he doesn't want that his wife gets out).

Then we have two beautiful Lloyds in it. SUZANNE Lloyd who appeared in six episodes of THE SAINT and Sue (here as Susan) Lloyd as seductive title character "Luella" wo played in two episodes and who was a very familiar face on british TV (she also played with Michael Caine in "The Ipcress File").

Last but not least Simon disguising himself as Samuel P. Taggart, absolutely joyful performance.

This is obviously more comedy, but never boring, with great cast and performances (especially Moore as Taggart, Hedison and sexy Luella Sue Lloyd).

Very Funny

Just loved the episode. Suzanne Lloyd was just brilliant playing the accusing wife. Sue Lloyd had just the right amount of charm, elegance and seduction. Roger Moore was his usual amount of politeness and assertiveness. All around just a brilliantly written and acted episode. This was British Humour at its best. The best humour is humour that is not too obvious or humour that is not perceived as humour. A great comedic break from the rather serious episodes.

Bishops & stained glass windows

A hugely entertaining episode, lit up by Sue Lloyd''s sultry, seductive sexy Luella.

The supporting roles are all more than competently performed by Ms Lloyd' s namesake actress and the permanently anxious David Hedison on a mission to marital disaster while the wife's away.

Enter Luella and immediately one is reminded of Raymond Chandlers quip in The Big Sleep, where a woman is described as sexy enough to make "a bishop kick in a stained glass window.

I watched the episode over breakfast and felt my temperature rise.

The marital spats between Hedison and Suzanne Lloyd were comic joy as the errant husband dug himself ever deeper into his self created mire.

Great fun.

Luella
Prismark1031 October 2022
Simon Templar meets up with an old friend Bill Harvey (David Hedison) and his wife Doris.

Bill is an American banker who has received a promotion and will be spending time in London because of his work.

When Doris is suddenly called away to Paris because her sister is about to give birth.

The Saint and Bill go out to party. Only Simon Templar tries his best to keep Bill on the straight and narrow.

Bill wants to party, gamble and have dames. He wins big on roulette. Later he ends up falling for a honey trap when glamorous Luella takes him to her apartment.

Bill is then photographed in a compromising position and ends up paying her 'husband' £2000 to get rid of the photo.

The Saint realizes that Bill has been duped and sets out to reverse the tables.

Clearly meant to be a lighthearted episode. This one ends up being a bad farce. The only thing missing was a custard pie fight.

It seemed the script was quickly knocked off. The argument between Bill and Doris stank of 1960s sexism.

The big plus was David Hedison. He had lots of energy and a good chemistry with Roger Moore. I can see why Hedison later teamed up with Moore in a James Bond movie where he played Felix Leiter.

I did raise an eyebrow when Simon was mistaken for James Bond at the end of the episode.

The Saint Sins
jimdoyle1119 February 2021
This isn't the worst episode of the normally excellent 'The Saint', but it comes close. Despite a reasonable story about the blackmail of errant husbands, the whole thing is overplayed by everyone (except the man with the halo) and comes over more like a Whitehall farce rather with characters falling down and opening the wrong doors and even the compulsory punch up is done slapstick style. The whole thing is a bit bonkers with two actresses called Su Lloyd, Simon Templar being mistaken for James Bond ten years before he was the real deal and with everybody's favourite Felix Leiter as his none-too-clever friend. And a plot flaw - David Hedison's character has previously lived in London so why does Simon spend hours showing him all the tourist sites at the beginning?
