VTTBOTS had a touch of Star Trek (Alexander Courage music, "red shirts" who get killed by creatures, danger, adventure, explosions, blinking light computer banks on the ship, time travel, military talk, etc)

TV-G | 25 min | Action, Crime, Fantasy

The Caped Crusader and his young ward battle evildoers in Gotham City.

Submarine (the inside of it is in fact the Seaview!).

8. The Return of Captain Nemo (1978 TV Movie)

After a century of being in suspended animation, the mysterious submarine commander is revived in modern times for new adventures.

Directors: Alex March, Paul Stader | Stars: José Ferrer, Burgess Meredith, Mel Ferrer, Horst Buchholz

Votes: 444

Submarine. Irwin Allen. Captain Nemo. Despite lasting just three episodes, this is my second favourite submarine show/movie ever made!

9. Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1964–1968)

TV-G | 52 min | Adventure, Sci-Fi

The submarine Seaview is commissioned to investigate the mysteries of the seas. Usually it finds more problems than answers...

TV-G | 60 min | Adventure, Comedy, Family

A space colony family struggles to survive when a spy/accidental stowaway throws their ship hopelessly off course.

Stars: Guy Williams, June Lockhart, Mark Goddard, Marta Kristen

Votes: 8,863

VTTBOTS used all the monsters and computer banks. The Lydecker effects for the FS1 and J2 crash landings looked alike. Both shows had a pirate played by the same actor. The Terrible Toys spaceship also appeared in LIS. The Mullendore & Leith Stevens scores in both shows sounded alike. And so it goes - I think you get the idea!

11. The Time Tunnel (1966–1967)

TV-PG | 60 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

Two scientists with a secret time travel project find themselves trapped in the time stream and appearing in notable periods of history.

Stars: James Darren, Robert Colbert, Whit Bissell, John Zaremba

Votes: 4,232

Irwin Allen's sister series to VTTBOTS - I sort of view Whit Bissell (Kirk) as another Nelson. Both shows have that same grim faced determination in the lead actors.

12. Land of the Giants (1968–1970)

TV-G | 60 min | Sci-Fi

A spaceship from Earth crash-lands on an Earth-like planet on which everything, including the human-like inhabitants, is twelve times the size of its counterpart on Earth.

Stars: Gary Conway, Don Matheson, Stefan Arngrim, Don Marshall

Votes: 2,859

Irwin Allen. The flying sub and spaceship Spindrift look alike. VTTBOTS had many episodes about "giant" sea creatures, giant dinosaurs and even a giant man in one episode.

13. The Poseidon Adventure (1972)

PG | 117 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

70 Metascore

A group of passengers must embark on a harrowing struggle for survival after a rogue wave capsizes their cruise ship at sea.

Director: Ronald Neame | Stars: Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Shelley Winters, Red Buttons

Votes: 49,226 | Gross: $84.56M

Irwin Allen at sea. The footage of flooded ship corridors does indeed bring back memories of VTTBOTS.

14. Beyond the Poseidon Adventure (1979)

PG | 114 min | Action, Adventure

22 Metascore

An extension of the previous film, wherein a group of adventurers return to the overturned ship to seek several fortunes.

Director: Irwin Allen | Stars: Michael Caine, Sally Field, Telly Savalas, Peter Boyle

Votes: 5,870

Irwin Allen at sea - a ten out of ten movie! Every single cast member is outstanding. How often can you say that about a disaster movie or any movie? This is also one of the most amusing disaster movies ever made - more amusing than the first Poseidon flick.

15. The Swarm (1978)

PG | 116 min | Horror, Thriller

30 Metascore

A huge swarm of deadly African bees spreads terror over American cities by killing thousands of people.

Director: Irwin Allen | Stars: Michael Caine, Katharine Ross, Richard Widmark, Richard Chamberlain

Votes: 8,554 | Gross: $10.00M

Irwin Allen with monsters (aka bees). A good part of this movie is Michael Caine yelling at Richard Widmark but what the hell. Some of the acting is a bit average. I like the action scenes, the Irwin Allen quirks and the wonderfully LOUD Jerry Goldsmith score.

16. Batman (1966–1968)
Episode: Ma Parker (1966)

TV-G | 25 min | Action, Crime, Fantasy

When the Dynamic Duo realizes Ma Parker has seized control of the Gotham Penitentiary, they must get in to stop her.

Director: Oscar Rudolph | Stars: Adam West, Burt Ward, Alan Napier, Neil Hamilton

A group of 21st-century colonists inhabit the underwater city called Pacifica. They find they must defend the city against hostile alien forces.

Director: Irwin Allen | Stars: Stuart Whitman, Rosemary Forsyth, Robert Colbert, Burr DeBenning

A movie that has casted a lifetime spell over me. See also the 1969 mini-version which is available on Youtube.

18. Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961)

PG | 105 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

49 Metascore

When the Earth is threatened by a burning Van Allen Radiation Belt, U.S. Navy Admiral Harriman Nelson plans to shoot a nuclear missile at the Belt, using his experimental atomic submarine, the Seaview.

Director: Irwin Allen | Stars: Walter Pidgeon, Joan Fontaine, Barbara Eden, Peter Lorre

Votes: 6,664

Starring the submarine Seaview not the human cast. This was Irwin's first GREAT movie! Before this we got things like The Story of Mankind and The Lost World. The Paul Sawtell score is very good - and I even like the Frankie song at the start! This started the 60s, or my take on the 60s. See below for 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (1954) for more VTTBOTS related comments.

19. Radar Men from the Moon (1952)

Votes: 1,180

VTTBOTS also had Howard Lydecker flying craft effects (FS1).

20. Sole Survivor (1970 TV Movie)

Not Rated | 100 min | Drama, Fantasy

This story is loosely based on the discovery of the B-24 "Liberator" bomber the "Lady Be Good" that was found in the Libyan desert after the crew got lost on their 1st bombing mission to Italy.

Director: Paul Stanley | Stars: Vince Edwards, Richard Basehart, William Shatner, Lou Antonio

Votes: 984

Basehart really got a chance to show his vast acting talents in this film where he plays a General with a troubled past. In 2023 I made a Youtube video about this movie and it was/is a surprise hit.

21. Zombies of the Stratosphere (1952)

Passed | 167 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

The invaders come to Earth to create an H-bomb to blast Earth out of orbit so that Mars can take its place.

Director: Fred C. Brannon | Stars: Judd Holdren, Aline Towne, Wilson Wood, Lane Bradford

Votes: 480

VTTBOTS had these sort of Howard Lydecker flying craft effects. The colorized version is shorter and better.

22. Fantastic Voyage (1966)

PG | 100 min | Adventure, Sci-Fi

72 Metascore

When a blood clot renders a scientist comatose, a submarine and its crew are shrunk and injected into his bloodstream in order to save him.

Director: Richard Fleischer | Stars: Stephen Boyd, Raquel Welch, Edmond O'Brien, Donald Pleasence

Votes: 20,828

20th Century Fox full-scale submarine. Something needs to be cleared here! VTTBOTS had a whale set seen in Jonah And The Whale. It has often been reported that Irwin pinched the set from FV. However, after looking at every frame of FV it is clear to me that the set was NOT seen in FV. It is possible the set was made for the flick but never used (this often happens in massive budget flicks like FV).

23. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)

G | 127 min | Adventure, Drama, Family

83 Metascore

A ship sent to investigate a wave of mysterious sinkings encounters the advanced submarine, the Nautilus, commanded by Captain Nemo.

Director: Richard Fleischer | Stars: Kirk Douglas, James Mason, Paul Lukas, Peter Lorre

Votes: 37,168 | Gross: $28.20M

Before VTTBOTS came this! This was the first GOOD sub production ever put on film! The sub miniature effects very much resemble the FX for the Seaview. "Leagues" is related to VTTBOTS in a few ways as it used the massive Fox tank for some of the Nautilus scenes. IMDb reports that Howard Lydecker was an uncredited consultant on the film however no other website seems to confirm this??

24. Mysterious Island (1961)

Not Rated | 101 min | Adventure, Family, Fantasy

During the Civil War a group of Union soldiers, a Confederate and a civilian escape the stockade using a hot-air balloon and end up on a strange Pacific island.

Director: Ishirô Honda | Stars: Akira Takarada, Joseph Cotten, Cesar Romero, Richard Jaeckel

Stars: Ray Barrett, David Graham, Robert Easton, Don Mason

Votes: 1,426

Submarine. My view of this series keeps changing?? There was a time in about 2003 when I thought it was one of the true TV classics! I am less interesting today. The puppets are the main issue.

30. Down Periscope (1996)

Loved in the 90s but this submarine series has not stood the test of time too well. The CGI effects now look terrible and we are now reminded that the youthful star (Brandis) took his own life in a very ugly way. However, the pilot, Abalon and "Sympathy" are must see episodes.

Route 66 does the Mermaid story and VTTBOTS composer Nelson Riddle does the music. This plot line is totally out of place in Route 66 just as it was in VTTBOTS - but I love it both times anyway!

Yes, VTTBOTS was not the only 60s adventure series with Leprechauns. With this talk about Bonanza you might be inspired to track down the series. I should warn you that I have singled out two unusual and special episodes. 95% of "normal" Bonanza will bore the crap out of you!
