Knocked Up (2007)
I can't understand the rating of 7.9
I can count on one hand the number of movies that I could not watch all the way through. This is one of them. The vulgarity of the main character and all of his buddies was so over the top as to be totally unbelievable; beyond even the realm of fantasy. I think I can tolerate a fair bit of this sort of stuff, but the movie exceeded my threshold. The only way the writers could have made this gang of misfits any less appealing would have been to make them criminals. I stopped watching soon after the lead female character decided to keep the baby; a decision that was totally unrealistic given her new career as a television interviewer. The idea that a woman like her would have anything to do with a guy like that was simply ludicrous. I thought this was going to be a good comedy, but excessive vulgarity isn't funny, it's just vulgar.
Monster House (2006)
Missing the adult appeal methinks
The previews, and the tendencies of current feature length animated movies, led me to believe this would be a humorous thriller. I was disappointed therefore, that the amount of humor was fairly small. I believe this movie might be a thriller for children, but there is nothing there to excite the heart of an adult. I found the character of the babysitter especially repugnant for an animated children's feature. I feel that sort of despicable character belonged in a movie for teenagers, not for younger children. The animation is first rate, but it is not "fun" to look at, like Toy Story or Shrek.
So no story for this adult, not much humor, and unexciting animation sums up why I give this movie a four out of ten.
Punch-Drunk Love (2002)
wasted my time, spoiler alert
** SPOILER ALERT ** An oversimplified story of two mentally ill people falling in love for absolutely no visible reason with a side plot of the dangers of phone sex. I cannot believe anyone likes this movie. I felt ripped off renting it. Adam Sandler, once again, acts like Adam Sandler.
Dr. T & the Women (2000)
I expected more comedy, less drama.
I expected more comedy, less drama, so I was fairly disappointed. I had a couple of short laughs at waiting room scenes and at Shelly Long in the office, but that was all. The drama part bored me. It was one of those movies that made me ask "what was the point?".
The Cell (2000)
Mildly interesting special effects, nothing else.
I saw this movie for free and I got what I paid for. There is just enough plot to give a reason for the special effects. Much of the special effects includes gruesome or female-exploitive images. A very unsatisfying movie.
Resurrection (1999)
Different from the rest.
I rented this movie based on a DVD reviewer mentioning that it made good use of the Dolby Digital 5.1 capabilities. I found that was true. For a change, with my home theater system, the rainfall in the movie sounded like it was all around me. Another good sound spot was in the crowded police station - I could hear the sounds all around me. The big surprise however, was how much I enjoyed the movie. I expected a typical serial murder movie, and I don't normally watch those types of movies. This one had several plot twists that managed to surprise me, as well as some unexpected and sometimes unique photographic techniques. I didn't need the gory scenes, but I can usually remind myself its just special effects.
The Whole Nine Yards (2000)
Good for a few laughs.
The premise of the story is a stretch, but after you accept it, you can enjoy the verbal jokes and sight gags. If you live in Montreal, you can enjoy seeing our city in a full fledged Hollywood movie. You can also wince at the atrocious French accent by one of the characters in the movie.
X-Men (2000)
As good as it gets for a comic adaptation.
I stopped collecting and reading comic books around 15 years ago. At that time, X-men was one of the best selling titles, and one of my favorites. Although the movie doesn't match every detail of the comic book (e.g., uniforms) the ones that it skips do not seem important. I enjoyed the movie the same way I enjoyed the comic book. What more could I ask for?
End of Days (1999)
Just barely okay for an Arnie fan
I have liked most of Arnold's films for their action and stunts. I even liked "last action hero". EOD, however, did not give me what I want in an Arnold movie. Most of the action seemed to be merely explosions. The movie suffers from the major plot hole of all movies with the Devil as an antagonist. He is all powerful, raining death and destruction everywhere, yet can't seem to rid himself of Arnie.
Velocity Trap (1999)
Not even worth renting
Weak story, weak writing and poor acting. The only good thing I can say about this film is that it had mediocre special effects.
