A Lot Less Clever Than It Thinks It Is
cadillac2017 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Part of me wants to rate this well for how good it is at touching on a lot of what Gen Z is today. A lot of me wants to give this a thumbs down for how completely unlikable the characters are, how overplayed the point is, and how predictable and dumb the whole movie ends up being.

I give it points for it's grounded approach. It advertises itself as a slasher, but it really ends up mostly being a deconstruction of these characters. Nothing over the top or typically slasher. Unfortunately, everyone here is a cliche. Mousy, quiet girl in the back. Recovering drug addict, the promiscuous one, the artist, the smart and serious one, the unapologetically obnoxious one. It's Gen Z paint by numbers. For their worth, the actors do a good job. They really channel the 'everything is a crises' vibe well. Unfortunately, in doing so, they're all pretty annoying. Even the most likable character ends up being disappointing.

The singular location is put to good use, but the movie goes through the rolodex of cliches to keep everyone there. Big storm, no working phones, power's gone. I can't tell if this part was In tribute to the genre or just lazy writing. And if you're expecting this to fulfill a slasher checklist, you can pull kills off the list. Like I said, this is grounded. Just about everything is tame and/or a post-kill discovery. Anyone going in for slasher thrills will be pretty disappointed.

Deciding whether you want to watch this movie or not essentially comes down to one question: how much do you really want to hang out with a bunch of partying gen z cliches?

Fun treat - don't take it too seriously
petarilic3219 October 2022
I keep seeing negative reviews for this film and don't understand why? A lot of people used the word "boring" while it literally can't be used to describe it. Simple? Sure. Dumb? Yes. Boring? Hell no.

It's a typical popcorn horror to watch with friends and have fun. The "who done it" comes into full effect while everyone contributes in their own way. The movie doesn't take itself too seriously and makes fun of social tropes. If that's not your thing, I understand, but it is in no way boring.

The pace is pretty good, acting performances are solid, very intense and keeps your attention. I had a good laugh multiple times which says a lot considering I don't like horror comedies. The aspects I liked the most about this film are it's self awareness and genuinely not knowing who did it midway through. I'd recommend watching this for Halloween with a group of friends and having a blast! Not a masterpiece but a solid 7/10 from me.

Not A Slasher!!! Leave Your Expectations At The Door
mattyice125 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know who needs to hear this but just a heads up that BODIES BODIES BODIES is a murder mystery and not a slasher film (think AND THEN THERE WERE NONE through a social satire/gen z lens). If you go in expecting a slasher film you *WILL* be disappointed. Like I don't know why it's being sold as a slasher film. It's just setting up unrealistic expectations for the horror crowd. Basically a group of friends meet up and play a game of Bodies Bodies Bodies (aka "Mafia" or "Werewolf") and one of them gets killed. Then they start to turn on each other trying to figure out who the murder is.

It's not a slasher film lol. Don't be upset if you go in expecting a serious horror film and you walk out saying "that was dumb" (despite the fact that that was the film's intention)

An Average Thriller/Comedy with an Above Average Twist
kjproulx25 August 2022
When A24 released the first trailer for one of their newest films, Bodies Bodies Bodies, I wasn't sure what to make of it. It felt almost like Scream, but with a modern spin, and while I can say it's not that, this is an enjoyable film if you know what you're in for. It won't be for everyone though, as this film is loaded with subject matter that will turn certain viewers off. All I will say is that it's worth watching, even if you're not enjoying yourself and I'll explain why. You don't have to rush out and see Bodies Bodies Bodies, but here's why it's worth a watch.

During a hurricane, a group of young adults party in their friend's mansion, while doing drugs and drinking a lot of alcohol. Not in their right mind, they decide to play a game that requires the skill of trying to find the killer. Things go very wrong though when one of them actually turns up dead. Trying to figure out who the killer is, this group lets out many bottled-up emotions and continuously backstab each other. This makes for some entertaining scenes of heavy dialogue, but it also works against the film in my opinion. The banter/arguing between characters is nearly half of what this film is, but I get that it was meant to be tongue and cheek. It just didn't quite do it for me all the time. In fact, if it wasn't for the ending, I'm not even sure I'd be talking highly about this film at all.

About halfway through the film, I wasn't even sure who to root for, even though I knew which characters the film wanted me to care about the most. The mystery always kept me on the edge of my seat, having no idea who the killer was, but I also wasn't sure I even cared that much. With that said, the way this film wraps up is one of my favourite few minutes of the year. Yes, I loved the ending that much. The issue is though, I don't think the rest of the film was enjoyable enough to say that I loved it overall. I will gladly watch this film over and over again with people who haven't seen it though. This is the type of film that has a reveal that comes out of nowhere and I couldn't get enough of it.

Overall, Bodies Bodies Bodies has some fun dialogue and Halina Reijn's directing work (which I have yet to see, until now) was also very commendable. It's just a fun horror/comedy that's not supposed to be taken as anything more. If it was that from start to finish, I'd barely give this film a pass because I just mildly enjoy myself. Again though, it's all about that ending for me. When the film finished, I thought back through the film and it worked a lot better for me. Some people may not like it as much as I did, but I wanted to stand up and cheer for the writers on this one, Sarah DeLappe crafted one hell of a twist. Bodies Bodies Bodies is now playing in select theatres, and while I do recommend it, this can easily be watched at home.

Mixed Feelings
loganschainker14 August 2022
There are a lot things that I really like about Bodies Bodies Bodies. How it makes fun of Gen Z. Which is why all of the characters are intentionally obnoxious, as well as the great twist. My issues with it being that though the film is short, I started to loose interest. And the humor, which I'll admit I was laughing in any many scenes, there were points where I couldn't tell whether or not if it was trying to be funny. Overall, Bodies Bodies Bodies is a mixed bag.

I don't think he's hiding in my bra
nogodnomasters10 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The production opens with Sophie (Amandla Stenberg) and Bee (Maria Bakalova) passionately kissing. They are on their way to a remote mansion for a Hurricane party. The place belongs to David's (Pete Davidson) father and some of the guests have no respect for his possessions, especially Greg (Lee Pace) for which there is a shared animosity. We quickly discover that most of the guests did not want Sophie to be there, nor did they know she was coming. We later discover Sophie had a real bad cocaine problem and has since gone to rehab, although cocaine and alcohol pour freely.

After playing a game where they smack each other in the face, they decide to play a game called "Bodies, Bodies,Bodies" which is half-way similar to a live Clue game. The game does not go well and breaks up. Afterwards a real dead body is discovered. They blame the person who was not there, who Bee subsequently whacks in the head in self defense and kills. After the third body shows up the group airs out their differences and hatred for each other. The body count grows. The ending was comical.

The film had elements of dark comedy perhaps aimed at a young adult audience. I half-way enjoyed it until the end and wished I had seen the film knowing the ending so I could laugh through the whole thing,

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

Scream for Gen Z
Calicodreamin21 August 2022
A modern horror of sorts, no scares and mild action. Mostly focused on trying to study the breakdown of people in the wake of suspicion. As I was looking for some good scares, I left feeling disappointed. I should have kept my old ass at home.

Smart, hilarious, cringy (but in the best way possible)
epru895 August 2022
Anyone reviewing this as vapid and shallow and claims it has a predictable ending is missing the entire point of the film.

The characters are of course absurdist representations of not only current youth but also humanity as a whole.

This is not meant to be a horror film that reinvents the wheel. It's meant to be a discussion of how we as a culture have warped our relationship with information, specifically technologically. It's meant to represent how we gather and receive unsound information, react impulsively, and create destruction while doing so, whether to ourselves or others. Understandably, the movie isn't TOO heavy handed in its approach as to not come across as preachy, but I think the message is clear and the film conveys it in a way that's fun and entertaining. I mean, come on, it's A24. If you're showing up expecting a by the books slasher, you've come to the wrong place. I think that's more of an expectation setting problem than it should be a knock at the film.

Great twist, did not see it coming
smoke024 September 2022
This was enjoyable from start to finish, and I don't get the negative reviews, particularly those whining about Gen Z; this isn't just Gen Z, it's any group of rich kids having a party that goes very wrong in any generation, with the same behaviors and reactions any of them would have exhibited in any generation, of course with minor differences. So enough about that.

I also did not expect a typical slasher movie when I started watching this, and the marketing I saw didn't depict it that way, so I don't get the whining about it not being a slasher movie or even a horror movie; it does fall into that genre though, so enough about that.

The actors are smart and behave like real people, and the story is clever, especially the twist at the end. There are no dull moments unless you aren't interested in character development or storyline, so in that case go watch Friday the 13th and leave this film for the rest of us who can appreciate it.

Rachel Sennott is the MVP
doubleb-2654128 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It's a fun movie in a whodunnit style and literally inspired by Among Us. Rachel Sennott stands above the rest. Her comedy skills are undenible. Although, I couldn't help but feel at certain moments that this movie was only made to be meme'd, gif'ed and tweeted about. However, my biggest dissapointment is the predictable ending which I guessed in the very beginning. I wish there was more suspense and tension.

A cast with zero chemistry
caroline_chupaa23 September 2022
Well this movie was.. dull dull dull. I guess it had a few fun scenes but that's about it. It's like "Clue meets Scream" only it does not work, and the whole build up everyone's waiting for just does not happen.

The script and the whole cast feels really rushed, some of these actors are great, they just didn't work so well together.

Was really hoping this would be cool and entertaining but this feels like a super annoying party I really want to leave, I don't even want to stay to see what happens and that will unfold I'd rather just say bye and go home and sleep, and than sleep some More.

A big big big no from me. Too bad it had potential.

A suspenseful, pleasantly different who-dunnit
johannes2000-116 September 2022
I liked it. Yes, it's a bit talkative, but that didn't really bother me, since the dialogues are pleasantly sharp and added wonderfully to the toxic and ominous atmosphere of mutual suspicion between this group of (supposed) friends. The settings (a luxurious villa, thunder and lightning, lights falling out, etcetera) are of course über-cliché, but somehow it all felt fresh and very convincing, helped by an evident tongue-in-cheek vibe. The story was well written, there is no real gore, but a lot of genuine suspense, and I loved the surprising (and cynical) twist at the very end. The acting in this kind of movies usually doesn't have the highest priority, but here it was actually pretty good.

Fun thriller that's not meant to be taken seriously
aprilsfriendorin12 February 2024
Based on the negative reviews here, I think a lot of people are taking this film too seriously. The thing is, this isn't your standard thriller. It's really more of a satire than a traditional thriller in any sense. If you don't take it too seriously and just look at it as a fun, silly time, you'll like it. (Side-note- it's also creative and has good twists.)

In essence, it's an over the top, stereotypical portrayal of Gen Z in a classic horror set-up. While some of the dialogue is inevitably cringey, it's also pretty funny (at least, if you have a sense of humor). Ultimately, if you're liberal- you need to be able to laugh at yourself. If you're conservative- you need to be able to watch young, liberal characters without triggering your fragile ego and short temper.

Unsure how this gets good reviews?
scottytnz23 September 2022
This is by far the most useless, painful to watch movie I have ever seen. Kept watching for a while waiting for it to get interesting, or scary, or well anything other than cringy Gen Z rubbish. If there was one character that was likeable, and a few scares it might have been watchable. As it is we turned off after about an hour (which felt like 3) and just WTF! How did someone spend money to make this?

The only horror is how bad the movie is. No thrills, and unsure how "comedy" comes into it at all? The joke is on the viewer wasting time!

Signed up to IMDB to leave my first movie review of my 43 years.

Cringey Irony (No Idea How to Rate it)
nigivysh11 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Bodies Bodies Bodies is a new film by A24. At this point I'm ready to watch anything they make no matter what it is. If you know the cast before you watch this movie, you probably know that it's going to be terrible. Even if you just look at the poster, you'll pretty much know what the movie will be about.

A couple of horny 20 year olds and an older war veteran whom one of the horny 20 year olds met through Tinder have a party at a distant house. They decide to play a game called Bodies Bodies Bodies where there's a killer who has to haunt others. They're having fun but suddenly one of them actually dies so they have to figure out what's going on.

When it comes to the characters, the actors did a great job depicting parts of the extremely annoying and clueless American teenage culture and I've had great laughs about it because it's something that's been annoying me on a daily basis ever since I moved here. Although I am sure that in Bodies Bodies Bodies it's all irony about similar movies and said culture and that this was the main purpose, I am not sure whether this film achieves anything with it. Everything that this film says I had already had in my head for some time before I watched it and even though I've had some great laughs, I still wouldn't say that Bodie Bodies Bodies is a good film even with its ironic context.

It's extremely difficult for me to rate this film, so I'm just going to say that in my head its rating can vary from 3 to 8 out of 10. I don't think that you have to watch it. It is more dumb than it is funny but that's also the point so I have no clue whether to recommend it or not. I will say that A24 are rockstars of filmmaking, 5/10.

An unexpectedly good, gen z movie
funnycommentor4 October 2022
The plot of the movie was very interesting and it looked like it was gonna be a slasher, murder-mystery movie (for example, "Scream"). Eventually, the plot of the movie was kinda misleading.. The storyline was very well written, so clever and full of gen z vibes. The characters were very interesting and so well-developed, but not very likeable. The filming location of the movie was only one (a huge mansion) and it was really good. The casting was really good and their acting was amazing. I have to admit, the whole marketing plan (trailers, posters) of the movie was so misleading. It wasn't a scary movie, nor creepy. It was more of a black-comedy, including some horror elements. It was a very funny movie and the dialogues between the characters, were very well scripted. In my opinion, the killcount of the movie was low and I expected bloodier and gorier kills. Sadly, some kills were done off-screen and they weren't very graphic. Overall, it was an enjoyable movie, full of twists and iconic scenes. Last but not least, the ending scene was totally unexpected and the plot twist was totally shocking.

Not so much a slasher movie than a passable, dark social satire
The-Last-Prydonian1 June 2023
Bee and her lover Sophie, attend the hurricane party of the latter's friend, David's Georgian grey manor house. As the night progresses, the group of obnoxious, self-centered Generation Z Brats decide to play a murder game called, Bodies Bodies Bodies within the dark corridors of the house. The fun however is cut short when one of their number is found dead, apparently having been murdered, and, cut off from the outside world the evening descends into one of paranoia, backstabbing, and petty recriminations as the so-called friends turn against one another. With the priorities on figuratively unmasking who the murderer is taking a backseat to their over-inflated egos.

A black satirical horror comedy from A24 studios and directed by Dutch movie Director, and actress, Helen Raijn, who had previously helmed the 2019 Dutch psychological drama, Instinct, Bodies Bodies Bodies marks her English language debut. Essentially a social satire, Raijn avails herself of the horror genre as a means to get across what is intended to be a stinging indictment of Gen. Z culture. Revolving around a group of some of the most hateful, self-absorbed entitled 20-somethings you'd wish not to come across, its cast does a bang-up job of getting under the audience's skin pretty much from the off. The stand out in his hatefulness is Pete Davidson's David, who personifies the spoiled, narcissistic "Rich Kid". With its plot owing some little inspiration from Agatha Christies "Ten Little Indians", one might be forgiven for being mistaken that it is a fairly traditional slasher movie, which it indeed has. No doubt leading to some of the negative reception the movie has received from audiences, and is partially the fault of severe mismarketing.

The movie is a fairly effective social commentary, with its obnoxious protagonists caught in a web of increasing paranoia, as they grow more and more suspicious of one another. Anyone who has used the internet and that's practically everyone, and been on social media will recognize something in each of the spoiled, self-entitled rich brats. A collective of egocentric idiots, who are deserving of little or no sympathy, and neither should there be. The movie swiftly becomes the equivalent of putting a a pack of vicious dogs in a room and having them tear each other to pieces. Raijn makes pretty good use of the confined setting with her cast firing on all cylinders once things begin to turn ugly. The problem is that the petty bickering does get dragged out too much once it kicks off when the more intense horror elements should be concentrated on. Meaning that it does gradually begin to start to run out of steam as it draws to its conclusion.

And while the characters are intended to be unlikeable, they may prove too insufferable to bear for the movie's ninety-minute run time. It does, however, conclude with a deliciously ironic twist that is topped off by a sharp final line before cutting to the end credits. Bodies Bodies Bodies for all its shortcomings still has moments of wit, and some biting satire, although nothing doesn't come together as well as might have been hoped. It marks a passable directorial debut for Raijn in her first Hollywood movie.

Not a Complete Miss but Doesn't Offer Much Either
CANpatbuck366420 November 2022
Not every story needs a hero and it can be refreshing when the characters are a little more "real" and grounded. But it's more difficult to write characters that are jerks that you still want to follow. Bodies Bodies Bodies is aware that the entire group of people they've centred the movie around are terrible people. It's not a blunder or something the creative team overlooked, but I'm not sure why they made that choice. Is the entire point that young people suck? That's fine... but other than the fact they're rich and are snorting and smoking everything in sight, they don't go about it in an amusing way. The movie is trying to crack jokes but it fails at that as well. You don't need heroic or even likeable characters but it forces the story to do even more heavy lifting to hold your attention.

Bodies is a movie where it isn't easy to separate the actors from their characters. I've already talked about how this movie is intentionally populated by vapid and annoying characters. This choice also makes it harder to distinguish between a badly written character or a mishandled performance. If I had to pick a member of the cast that was the most impressive, I'd go with Amandla Stenberg playing the emotionally vulnerable Sophie. She's grown up a lot since her appearance in The Hunger Games and with her character drying out and trying to stay sober, she did a good job being erratic and unpredictable. I liked Maria Bakalova so much in Borat Subsequent, she's just fine here. It's not a comedic role but she didn't have the same spark she showed previously. If there was someone who got on my nerves, Pete Davidson's character David was extra snarky and annoying but I couldn't really distinguish if that was just the character or something he was putting on top of it.

The only defence I can really muster for Bodies is that the central mystery was interesting enough to sustain me through all of the dead air. With all the characters unable to properly process due to the illicit substances and the hurricane raging outside, it could have been anyone and that's properly played up. The reveal is unique but it's also fitting as it kind of fizzles out like most of the tension. I'll give them credit for being creative but I just kind of shrugged as we hit the closing credits.

I've seen worse than Bodies Bodies Bodies but I don't get why there was such huge hype from the critics. Bodies isn't scary and there's only so much tension and excitement to be gleaned from the premise. The acting was fine but it was also hampered by the characters being so self-absorbed and hard to like. While the twist is kind-of new, it didn't mean much and I was still left disappointed that I sunk an hour and a half into this. I'm giving it a 5/10 and I'm probably being generous. We're getting much better thrillers and horror movies more frequently now, you're better off checking out one of those.

Generation Z horror.
jp_9119 October 2022
"Bodies Bodies Bodies" is a fun horror and black humor movie whose script manages to entertain and make you wonder who the murderer could be. Although some internet pages mistakenly classify it within the slasher subgenre, this movie is really focused on black comedy. The performances are good and the best thing is its soundtrack, which is totally awesome, making a good duet with the image on the screen. A defect is its cinematography which is not bad but could have achieved a better effect if it had been more innovative. A film that, without being a masterpiece, talks about generation Z in a crude way, it is definitely a film worth seeing.

Welcome to the House of Fun Fun Fun...
Xstal23 September 2022
Imagine what you'd do, arriving at a rather large residence with your new girlfriend, to attend a gathering with several of her friends who are all ever so slightly scarred by their existence and the wealthy lifestyles they were born into. Suffice to say that things don't go as you may have expected or imagined or planned, or perhaps they do, as egos and charisma born from the detritus of inheritance go toe to toe and exceed the imaginings of the most cynical onlooker, as well as providing a casualty or two, or three, or maybe more, all injured by the exceptionally sharp chips on their as yet fully grown shoulders - a lion's den indeed.

Bodies Bodies Bodies, is Boring Boring Boring
nscoby9320 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
When I saw the trailers for this film I thought it would be trash and that's exactly what I was given. The only reason I watched this film was because of the positive ratings it's currently receiving on IMDb and Letterboxd, so I thought maybe I'm wrong and being an A24 fan I wanted to be. But dear God was this film so unbelievably boring, the worst A24 film I've ever seen.

This will be quick as I literally didn't like anything about this film, the characters are absolutely annoying. They are incredibly unlikeable and nothing about them is interesting. The "story" is boring bordering on nonexistent. I know it's satirical but it's boring, uninteresting, and terrible.

The only thing that wasn't straight trash were the performances which were passable at best. I will mention Maria Bakalova as Bee and Lee Pace as Greg in a positive light as they were the only likeable characters. In the end all this film did for me was fortify how annoying I find this generation to be.

If this film is supposed to be comedy it's not funny, if it's supposed to be horror it's not scary, if it's supposed to be a slasher the kills are boring, if it's supposed to be a thriller it's sure as hell not thrilling. The films conclusion is damn near a slap in the face, to suffer the one hour and 34 minute run time which felt like two hours and for it to all literally be for nothing was insulting. Perhaps that's the point to show how desperate and unpredictable people get during moments of crisis. All I could think after that reveal was "Good lord all of this for nothing" it was an absolute waste of time. The only good thing about that ending was how possible and true it could be to life.

This was a huge swing and a miss for A24 I don't understand how or why they would produce such trash. Oh well it's not for me simple as that, if the rest of you like it then I'm happy for you.

Great whodunnit satire
masonsaul10 September 2022
Bodies Bodies Bodies mixes the traits of a whodunnit with some quality satire about the upper classes of society that hooks you in once the power cuts out and keeps you engaged right up until its final statement, that admittedly could've been a little more potent.

The whole cast is really good at making these characters unlikeable with antagonistic chemistry but still extremely entertaining to watch except Maria Bakalova who's innocent presence and shy body language make her the one to root for.

Halina Reijn's direction is excellent, despite the minimal lighting due to narrative events the film is always well lit and comprehensible and keeps the tension going once the bodies start dropping. The soundtrack is really good and fits the film's tone perfectly.

Not gonna lie, they had us in the first half
fernandopaezfdz26 April 2023
I saw another reviewer who said it's a great gen z movie, I totally agree.

You are not going to see a movie with many jump scares, however, it is a film that has you glued to the screen intrigued from beginning to the end.

I think Pete Davidson makes this movie more intriguing with a role that is truly compelling, doesn't disappoint with all of the cringe comedy moments.

I think it makes a very good criticism of many of the toxic things that the gen z has haha

Btw...You have to watch it until the end to understand everything.

I recommend it for a casual day where you are looking for an entertaining movie to watch.

Boring Boring Boring
vgamerdc12 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Ugh. Let me start by saying I really wanted to like this film. However it is nothing how I assumed it would be-and not in a good way. Bodies Bodies Bodies is not a slasher film or a thriller for that matter. It's a film about rich people being a-holes to one another, too caught up in their own narcissism to actually do any detective work. The first and third body I actually was questioning whether or not they were actually dead. It just didn't make any sense. And turns out I was right. If everyone had stopped complaining about their relationships and treating feelings like facts-which is cleverly acknowledged in the only good sequence in the film-and actually done some detective work... Well, we wouldn't have this film and you would have saved 95 minutes of your life.

I was especially disappointed with the lack of comedy. When Pete Davidson nut taps that one guy early on, that could have been a running gag. I just kept wanting to do some more digging into Pete and how he died. Well, there is a reason they don't want you to know, and it's because it's so dumb. When the "killer" is revealed the survivors feel like idiots and the audience agrees. Why did you waste my time? What was the point? These people didnt have to be rich for this to happen either, if the point was something about narcissism. HOWEVER, if the film had starred a bunch of middle school girls and it was a satire about how overly dramatic the hormone raging teens are, then I might have been more entertained or bought their emotional reactions.

The one good sequence is when there are four girls left and Bee manages to enter the house again. I enjoyed the dialogue in that scene, but that's really it. The lighting was well done overall, but there are way too many closeups. I mean, I kinda get it-if it was mostly medium-wide shots then most of the frame would be darkness. But at the same time, it just felt like poor filmmaking. No, I didn't expect a masterpiece when I came in, but come on, this is an A24 film for crying out loud. If it's a comedy, then okay, but this wasn't funny. And it wasn't thrilling either. I felt no tension whatsoever, even when people were fighting with one another.

I do not recommend Bodies Bodies Bodies. It is neither funny nor suspenseful. The characters are not engaging and the entire film feels like a waste of time-and it actually turns out to be that way for the characters as well. 3/10. A few points for that sequence later one with the gun and for lighting it well. (side note - what brand Glow Sticks did Alice use? Those things lasted for hours!)
