The last couple Reznor-Ross soundtracks weren’t hitting as hard: on The Killer they ceded ground to Morrissey, replacing their multi-tone soundscapes for atmospherics; Bones and All found them exploring some more pastoral tones to admirable, if limited ends; Empire of Light, what can you say. There’s a special joy, then, listening to their work for Challengers, which our review was indeed correct in calling “their most inspired work in some time”––it suggests those bouncier, more aggressive bits from The Social Network becoming an entire album unto themselves.
There’s also “Compress / Repress,” a track the duo wrote with Luca Guadagnino and which finds Reznor making a rare vocal appearance. It’s been, somehow, six years since a non-instrumental Nine Inch Nails album; this writer hopes it sparks something of the frontman’s old habits.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have unveiled their latest film score. Today, the duo released Challengers [Mixed] by Boys Noize, the score for Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film remixed as a contentious DJ set by Boys Noize.
Spanning 28 minutes, Challengers [Mixed] sees Boys Noize reimagine the nine songs Reznor and Ross made for the score, adding additional production and leaning into its synth-driven, electronic feel. The duo “hand-selected” Boys Noize for the project.
“It’s been a fun challenge to turn this into one fluid experience and take it even further by redesigning the tracks, creating new elements and changing certain parts,” Boys Noize said in a statement. “Especially on ‘Compress / Repress,’ which turns super epic in the end. Working with Trent and Atticus has been a dream come true; they’ve been so great and helpful during the entire process.” Stream the album below.

In the luddite days of the Nineties, there were a handful of ways to discover a new video game: You could hear about it in the schoolyard from that one kid who swore that their older brother got a copy straight from Japan. You could read about it from a more legitimate source, like a magazine you picked up at Borders. Or you could inevitably stumble across a commercial on TV. That last one, that’s how I discovered the original Final Fantasy VII. But unlike other game commercials that relied on near-traumatic,...

The internet is abuzz with anticipation for David Ayer’s forthcoming action film The Beekeeper. MGM debuted a red band trailer for the hard-hitting thrill ride on Wednesday, featuring Jason Statham as an elite ass-kicking machine with an axe to grind.
In The Beekeeper, one man’s brutal campaign for vengeance takes on national stakes after he is revealed to be a former operative of a powerful and clandestine organization known as “Beekeepers.” Ayer directs from a script by Kurt Wimmer. While Statham is the star of the show, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Josh Hutcherson, Bobby Naderi, Minnie Driver, Phylicia Rashad, and Jeremy Irons complete the primary cast.

Pop star Britney Spears had a shiny new pink pole installed in her house, and promptly celebrated by provocatively dancing to Nine Inch Nails‘ equally provocative hit “Closer.”
Spears, who has posted dozens of videos of herself dancing on Instagram over the past couple years, was particularly excited to try out her new pole. She wrote, “Got this pole two days ago and last night was my first time on it!!!”
The clip shows Spears working the pole while wearing a leopard-print bikini, showing off her skills as Nin’s industrial classic provides the soundtrack. In the years since its 1994 release, “Closer” has become a staple at strip clubs, so it’s no stranger to supplying the music for pole dancing.

“Yeah,” Hamm said. “I was down to the very end of that. It was meant to be me, but we had to film the continuing adventures of Mr. Draper.”
At the time, Hamm was still starring as Don Draper in the critically acclaimed drama series “Mad Men”, creating the scheduling conflict.
But the actor explained that he had a direct connection to the character of Nicholas Dunne, because he is also from St. Louis.
“Poor Ben, a Boston guy, had to wear a Cardinals hat,” Hamm joked of Affleck. “He was not very happy about it.”

The Mother is a mutha of an intimately scaled action film, a violent female-centric drama about a hardened combat veteran who has great difficulty adapting to being anything other than a tough soldier, and that includes being a mother. Joining Kathryn Bigelow, Patty Jenkins, Gina Prince-Blythewood, Mimi Leder and the Wachowski siblings among women responsible for notable action features, Aussie director Niki Caro has delivered a film that could easily have veered into sentiment at any moment but instead remains tough as nails and doesn’t go soft at the end. The film would surely have an even greater impact on the big screen but, as it is, launched Friday on Netflix.
Perhaps no star as survived more ups and downs in her career than has Jennifer Lopez, and while her performance here mostly calls on her to be lacking anything akin to sentiment, she powers through...

Britney Spears gets sweaty in the studio for a dance session. Pic credit: ©ImageCollect.com/Sun/StarMaxWorldwide
Between her conservatorship ending, officially becoming a wife, and releasing a chart-topping single all in one year, it seems that Britney Spears has plenty to dance about these days.
Britney, 40, was not shy to load her Instagram followers’ feeds up with posts on Thursday.
One video, in particular, showed the megastar dancing inside what appeared to be an empty dance studio.
The 2000’s pop icon entered the screen while lip-syncing to Noga Erez’s song, Nails. It didn’t take long before she added in her signature hair flips and spins along to the beats of the catchy tune.
Britney started the video off with her hair in a high ponytail before taking it down halfway through for a more “dramatic effect.”

It was a night of mixed returns for the broadcast networks.
The reboot of CSI finally stabilized for CBS, drawing 3.3 million total viewers and a 0.3 rating.
These numbers are soft, but it's possible the show could have a strong digital footprint.
Survivor came down a bit for CBS opposite the World Series.
It had 5 million viewers and a 0.8 rating.
Tough as Nails managed 2.8 million viewers and a 0.4 rating.
Over on NBC, Chicago Med (6.6 million/0.7 rating) and Pd (5.5 million/0.7 rating) were both steady.
Chicago Fire (6.6 million/0.7 rating), meanwhile, ticked down a tenth.
Legends of Tomorrow celebrated its 100th episode by rising a bit in total viewers.
Batwoman (0.4 million/0.1 rating) took a tumble in total viewers but was steady in the demo.
ABC had a mostly steady night with The Goldbergs, The Wonder Years, Home Economics, and Amlt at their typical levels.
The Conners, however, took a hit after a small hiatus.
The reboot of CSI finally stabilized for CBS, drawing 3.3 million total viewers and a 0.3 rating.
These numbers are soft, but it's possible the show could have a strong digital footprint.

It had 5 million viewers and a 0.8 rating.
Tough as Nails managed 2.8 million viewers and a 0.4 rating.
Over on NBC, Chicago Med (6.6 million/0.7 rating) and Pd (5.5 million/0.7 rating) were both steady.

The Houston Astros bounced back Wednesday night to even their score with one win a piece against the Atlanta Braves during Game 2 of the 2021 World Series. Just as the scores evened out between the two vying teams, the Game 2 broadcast itself evened out with the corresponding game of the 2020 World Series by earning a 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demo and 8.69 million viewers, in fast nationals. Numbers are set to rise, as is the case with most major sports and live events, pending adjustment.
While last night’s game matched that of 2020, it’s worth noting that the sophomore match was down from Tuesday’s opener by five tenths in demo rating and approximately 14% in viewership. Despite the slip, the Game 2 of the 2021 World Series topped Wednesday primetime on all fronts.

For the second time in three weeks, CBS’ Survivor led Fox’s The Masked Singer among adults 18-49, taking the demographic crown on the broadcast networks Wednesday night. NBC’s Chicago Fire was the most watched show of the evening, tying its season high with the departure of long-time regular Jesse Spencer.

The ratings are in and the CSI revival may not be long for this world.
The second episode of the revival managed 3.7 million viewers and a 0.4 rating.
It slipped in total viewers but was steady in the demo -- that's a positive.
Survivor, meanwhile, inched down a tenth in the demo, delivering 5.4 million viewers and a 0.8 rating.
Tough as Nails also dipped tenth, attracting 2.9 million viewers and a 0.4 rating.
The CW's Legends of Tomorrow (0.6 million/0.1 rating) and Batwoman (0.5 million/0.1 rating) moved to their new nights on par with their results at the end of their previous seasons.
The true measure of success on this network is in how the shows perform digitally.

Looks like viewers did not miss CSI as much as CBS hoped.
The highly-anticipated limited series revival, CSI: Vegas, kicked off with 4 million viewers and a 0.4 rating in the demo.
The network probably expected better from a format that was, at one time, the most popular in the world.
There's really no room for slippage here, but it is possible the show could emerge as a success on streaming.
Time will tell.
Earlier in the night for CBS, Survivor managed 5.6 million viewers and a 0.9 rating -- enough to lead the night in the demo.
Tough as Nails returned at 3.1 million viewers and a 0.5 rating.
Over on NBC, Chicago Med perked up to 6.7 million viewers and a 0.8 rating.
Chicago Fire was steady at 7 million viewers and a 0.8 rating.
Chicago P.D. slipped to 5.6 million viewers and a 0.7 rating.
The Goldbergs on ABC (3.2 milluon/0.6) was up.
The Wonder Years (2.4 million/0.5) and The Conners (3.1 million/0.5) were both steady.

I first encountered Joonas Neuvonen’s Lost Boys, a sort of “unintended sequel” to 2010’s spectacular look at self-destructive Subutex addicts in rural Finland, Reindeerspotting: Escape from Santaland – which was co-written and edited by Lost Boys co-director Sadri Cetinkaya – at this year’s virtual Cph:dox. At the time I tried but failed to take notes while watching. The film just got under my skin in a way that froze me to my laptop screen. Atmospherically, Neuvonen’s decade-later doc brought to mind the sensation of being trapped inside a Nine Inch Nails video. The next generation of artists and filmmakers need guidance, and many in Hollywood have long grappled with how to offer training and support. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is trying to achieve that through its Academy Gold Rising program, which completed its fifth year of over 100 entertainment enhancement and mentorship for students and young professionals.
Of course, Hollywood is still not an even playing field, even despite dramatic changes in the industry in the last few years. Still, as Christine Simmons, the chief operating officer for the Academy tells Variety, she’s optimistic.
“I don’t know that many Black CEOs,” Simmons says. “We have industry folks mentoring and matching these young people, so that trail that we had to run uphill, barefoot, in the snow, can be eliminated. But, more importantly, they can see people that look like them that are actually doing it.”

The CW has a hit on its hands with Kung Fu.
Kung Fu Season 1 Episode 2 drew 1.4 million viewers and a 0.2 rating -- identical to the numbers it posted last week for its series premiere.
Given that most new shows drop in the vicinity of 10 to 15% in their second weeks, this is an impressive hold.
What did you think of the follow-up to the premiere?
Nancy Drew continued with increased ratings thanks to the stronger lead-in support.
The latest episode had 0.6 million viewers and a 0.1 rating.
Over on ABC, The Goldbergs, The Conners, Home Economics, and Call Your Mother were all steady week-to-week.
A Million Little Things, however, dipped to a new series low in the demo.
The former Thursday drama had 2.5 million viewers and a 0.3 in the demo -- coming in behind a Chicago Pd encore.
Fox's The Masked Singer (4.8 million viewers/1.1 rating) and Game of Talents (2.7 million/0.6 rating) were steady.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross scored not one but two Best Original Score Oscar nominations this morning, for “Mank” and “Soul.” Those films, along with their score for the HBO series “Watchmen,” wrap up a string of “pretty disparate projects” for Reznor and Ross, and while the pair said the nominations are “humbling” and “flattering,” they’re really just itching for one thing: getting back in front of crowds to perform as Nine Inch Nails.
“Usually when we finish a tour, we both have had enough of it,” Reznor told TheWrap on Monday. “Now that I can’t go out, it’s triggered the teenager in me that now desperately needs to go out, and I can’t wait to get back to bitching about how long a bus ride is or complaining about backstage toilets and all those things. God, it sounds good.”

Does it still rear its ugly head and punch me in the face sometimes?...

Though Bram Stoker’s 19th-century Dracula story is now in the public domain, sources told THR that the movie will likely end up with Universal Studios as it reboots its pantheon of monster-movie characters.

Ever since it was announced that another Paranormal Activity was in the works, many have wondered when the next chapter in the frightening franchise would terrify audiences once again. There’s been little news on the upcoming film’s development, but one of the producers has now offered an update. Unfortunately, though, it’s not terribly positive.
Love them or despise them, the Paranormal Activity franchise has been one of the most successful in the entire genre of horror. The first movie back in 2007 only cost a meager $15,000 and brought in $194 million. Altogether, the six films have grossed a combined effort of $890 million, which is higher than the likes of Halloween, Predator, Scream and Final Destination. Not all of them have been well-received though, and the property did start to experience some fatigue with their last few entries. Still, it seems enough time has passed and fans could very well get behind another chilling chapter.
