Buno Haansh - The Movie Review

*MAY HOLD SOME SPOILERS. EVADE IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE*

There are very scarce movies which make sense in real life. Buno Haansh is one of those films. It is a story of a common middle-class lad, Amol who daydreams of getting bigger, not for himself, but for his household and contacts. He used to live a small life covering his love interest, Sohag and his family. He encounters his old colleague who takes him to Madam, the deity of the bad world. Amol gets a chance of living his dreams and gets involve into the hazardous trafficking business. He is absolutely unaware of his track, but he continues to walk or rather run on this new runway, the underworld's runway. He bumps into new individuals on his journey which brings a new definition to his life. This new life has necessity, gluttony, pursuit, money and gore. Will Amol be able to escape from his new life is what the story is all about.

The story is truly eye-catching, credits to Samaresh Majumdar. The director introduces us to all the characters at the first minutes of the movie. Amol stays with his mother, his sister-in-law and his brother. They are living in poverty and somehow exhausted of their condition. He works at a mall where he encounters Robin and the key story starts. He complements emotional factor to the entire design which takes the movie to another level. Amol starts drifting down risky ways with fear as he flies from Kolkata to Dhaka to Bangkok. He is still uninformed of his future. In the meantime, he meets Rijula and his life takes another huge turn and the rest? Better go watch the film.

I haven't read the book, but I overheard that there are many alterations in the script which actually makes the flick better. Amol's sister in law used to be a selfish woman which is totally different here. There are new characters here. Even the climax of the movie is a bit different. I sensed that the director did an amusing job making those modifications. The cinematographer has done a brilliant job. The music should get a 20 out of 10 points, extra 10 points for adding a great texture to the movie. "Zindagi Kabhi Thamti Nehi" is actually the theme of the movie. Shantanu Da, Anindya Da, Chandril da Kudos

Director – Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury takes an entirely different writing from what he actually does, a whodunit instead of an emotional-romantic flick. This actually helps the movie as he adds his own original feels to the film. The film is a bit slow during the first half, but Shoojit Sircar comes to rescue. The climax is outstanding.

Acting – The movie comprises big names. Shankar Chakraborty, Shantilal Mukherjee, Gargi RoyChowdhury, Sohag Sen, Arindam Sil everybody has done a great job. Moon Moon Sen is the ultimate choice for Madam. Srabanti does miracles in his short and sweet role. Tanusree Chakraborty adds a great intensity with her avaricious yet candid role. Sudiptaa Chakraborty – I simply adore her act, with splendid dialogue throwing and great expressions, she boosts the entire movie.

It's a must watch for every film lovers. I'm sure that they will surely love the sentiment and the ecstasy of this film. 8/10.

P.S. I overlooked something? Yes, I suppose. How was our "Mahanayak Dev's acting? Ans – I would say that there is simply no one who could have done Amol's role with such aptness. He worked hard and did an awesome job in this movie. Bonu Haansh is his best performance till date, the BEST!

Watch it for it's cinematography.

In Buno Haansh actor Dev has come a lot ahead than the days of challenge, yet i have some doubt over his skill in dialog delivery which is visible in parts of the movie.DoP did a great job in the movie,as the cultures of three different cities Dhaka,Bangkok and Kolkata has come alive.Score from Santanu Moitra is not something to remember coming out of the hall and it has failed to create suspense anywhere in the movie. What the film really lacks i feel is suspense.Director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury has tried to mix thrill of chase with grief of losing loved and dear ones. The viewer is never forced to sit tight and shiver in tension about what is going to happen next moment.Though the film had great potential it lacks the x-factor to be remembered after years. However it is surely best Bengali movie of 2014.

Watchable, with a relevant story and some good performances
avik-kumar-si24 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Buno Haansh, director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury's latest film starring Dev is based on a story by the popular author Samaresh Majumdar. The storyline follows the trajectory of a guileless young man's descent into a world of crime and deception.

Amal Kumar Biswas (whose first name translates to clean/ pure), played by Dev, is the younger son of a financially challenged family. A chance encounter with a friend triggers a chain of events where Amal - partly driven by financial demands and partly the lure of easy, big money - gets trapped in a world of men, women and machinations the likes of which he has little idea of. Lacking in the skills and cunning to deal with this sort of world, Amal slips into the abyss faster than he can fathom.

To say any more about the story would spoil the broth.

Buno Haansh is a film which is in some parts a thriller and in some parts a drama. It is pretty slick and gripping when it is a thriller, with the cinematography being excellent and the sequences fast-moving. It is when it comes to the drama bits where Buno Haansh could have been better. The inter-character interactions could have been scripted better. Amal's relation with his fiancée Sohag (played by Srabanti) and his family come out half-baked. Sohag's character lacks depth and hence remains unrelatable despite Srabanti's best efforts. In comparison, Tanushree emerges as the more attractive female lead, though she seems to be a bit aware of the camera at times. In the bit roles, Sudipta Chakraborty (as Amal's sister-in-law) and Shankar Chakraborty deserve special mention for breathing credibility into their characters.

Coming to Dev, his biggest strengths remain his physique and his handsome, innocence-laden face. His non-verbal acting is very good and he can convey every emotion from embarrassment to turbulence, from fear to care superbly with his expressions and body language. However, it is when he has to speak that he can be mediocre. It could be his lines to blame at times, but somehow his dialogue delivery lacks conviction too. If he can work on this aspect, it could take his performances to a whole new level.

In summary, Buno Haansh is quite a watchable film with some good performances and a story which is relevant for most of us, albeit with our own parallels.

An interesting story marred a bit by a difficult to believe leading character.
planktonrules13 November 2014
"Buno Haansh" is an Indian film that has many ingredients you would want in a suspense film but it also has a serious problem which cripples the plot. It's worth seeing, perhaps, but is far from the best sort of film coming from this wonderful filmmaking country.

The story comes from a novel by Samaresh Majumdar and the film stars Dev. Dev plays Amal, a poor but apparently decent Bangladeshi immigrant living in Kolkata (Calcutta). But, like so many people, he's struggling--struggling to help take care of his family, struggling with illnesses and struggling to make a life for himself. While he does have a job, he realizes it will never allow him to get ahead of all his debts and obligations. One day, he sees an old friend and the friend offers him a job. This job sounds perfect--he gets to travel the world and make lots of money. All he has to do in return is bring home a package each trip. Because he's an honest looking sort, he shouldn't have any problems with the customs people...especially since he's been told that some of these agents are also in on it. But what is 'it'? What is he smuggling into the country? And for whom? Amal doesn't ask such questions--he just does his job and is quite good at it.

At this point I assumed that what would follow would be a rags to riches crime story where Amal worked his way up through organized crime to become a big man. This is a very typical sort of Indian film theme. However, the story surprised me--and I appreciate that. During one of his trips abroad, Amal meets a pretty Indian lady who is herself on the run from the mob. He fatefully decides to help her. Instead of minding his own business and returning home with the package as usual, he makes a few decisions--decisions which could easily get him killed. What's next for this ambitious young man? Well, I don't want to spoil it...suffice to day that his life gets a lot more interesting!

Unlike many Indian films, this one lacks the usual musical interludes, romance and clichés you might expect--and I appreciate that. It isn't that I don't like a more typical Bollywood film, but I also like variety--and "Buno Haansh" offers something different in style and content. But, there is a serious problem. Dev plays one of the most incredibly passive guys you could ever see--too passive. His friend convinces him to go into the smuggling business and the pretty lady on the run convinces Amal to do something even crazier. In both cases, the character says very little and soon finds himself pulled along by others. This makes for a strange sort of film--a film where there really is no hero nor any sense of direction. You find that there really is no one to root for and, at times, Amal is exasperating because he just seems awfully naive and stupid. Because of this, it's really hard to take the film very seriously or care about the guy and therefore it limits the impact of the story. An interesting near miss that is worth seeing but there are certainly better Indian films you could see instead.

Not up to the mark.
Spectacula23 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Inappropriate Ending; Characters not well cast and portrayed; Srabanti's role, Gargi's role are too limited. It will leave you unsatisfied, I bet.

Deb plays a common man (Amal) whose girlfriend (Sohag/Srabanti) is suffering from some terminal illness. He's offered a job by Munmun Sen to smuggle illegal articles across international borders. His first consignment takes him to Dhaka. Before the next consignment he's sent on a trip to Bangkok where he incidentally meets Rijula/Tanushree who was cheated by Gargi/Adrija (Addy) into an escort job. Amal and Rijula meets another Mafia who consigns them with a leather bag. Rijula separates from Amal at the Calcutta airport without informing Amal who soon finds him in trouble with local goons who works for that Mafia as he has lost the leather bag that he entrusted to Rijula. Rijula has taken that bag to her apartment. She calls him after he has searched her for long and asks him to reach her room. Rijula insists on opening the bag to see its contents. It turns out to be 1 crore Indian rupee. They plan on escaping to Pune with that sum. At Pune, when they discover that their money is fake currency, they bet it on racecourse and get huge returns. Soon the racecourse corruption breaks out and cops come out to hunt them. The local goons back in Calcutta also intensify their search with their Pune connections. They plan to escape to Australia. Rijula gets her visa from the consulate whereas Amal is denied due to bad interview. She manages to take off but her partner is stuck back with the leader goon fiercely after him. During the chase game, Amal learns that his Sohag is comatized. As he has lost his hope for her recovery, he becomes more miserable. With the help of his friend Robin, he gets an "Italian" gun and ""in his first shot" and "in an unaimed stray shot" shoots down the goon who is behind him. The movie ends there in a gloomy tone.

Thrilling movie with some great performances.
somak-mukherjee18 August 2014
I had read Samaresh Majumdar's novel Buno Haansh before watching the movie, so i had expectations from it, but i was a bit hesitant as i did not trust Dev's dialog delivery and acting, but i am happy to say he has pulled off a difficult role brilliantly, he was not perfect but was much much better than his previous movies and has acted really well in this one looking innocent and confused as Amol, the main character. It will surely be one of the highlights of his career and he has the potential. Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury has made a detailed movie with a soul, keeping the thrill elements intact. All the other characters are perfectly cast but Sudipta Chakraborty's act is the standout. The background score and music by Shantanu Moitra are great as always. Buno Haansh and Dev's act is surely one of the best this year.

There's a 100 feet of crap, there's Grand Masti and, then, there's Buno Haansh
ardwibedi371 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I walked into the crowded multiplex, apprehensive of Dev, only lured there by the seductive words of professional critics. I came out, swearing at the critics who I had so naively believed, with vigor that I myself didn't know I possessed. To summarize what's wrong with Buno Haansh, let me give you an example. A villain, a pimp as she was, has a favorite dialog. Now, I don't compare all villains with The Joker or, you know, any GOOD villain of Hollywood when I watch Indian movies. But, her lines left me brain dead.

She said and, I quote verbatim "Dushtu lokera amai Addy bole." I won't bother translating, as, no one other than Bengalis watch Tollywood anyway. Then, Dev, looking as dumb as he probably is in real life, struts around, irritating the hell out of me. In one scene, a girl tells him for FIVE fricking minutes about how she was pimped to Bangkok from India. After she ends, Dev says something like, "I see, that woman deals in women." I mean, what the hell? You understood that now, GENIUS? Then, there' the minor matter of the protagonist(if Dev deserves such a respectful tag) and his new girlfriend running away to Pune with 20 lakh, set to make a new life in Australia. Other than the fact that, 20 lakh is not enough to make a new life in India, let alone Australia, with it's negative currency value, without any qualifications whatsoever, why the hell will you choose Australia? The country's filled with racist people who stick screwdrivers into you! And,then, there's the Race fiasco. Apparently, all you need to win horse races is a pretty chick and bundles of fake thousand bucks notes. But, the list goes on. I could, for example, quote how Dev shoots a professional killer who he had eluded so far with one shot. And, on and on and on. To conclude,NEVER EVER EVER think about watching that movie. It LITERALLY decreases your IQ.

A must watch!
ahirjoy24 August 2014
A must watch! Dev has given another powerful performance as the central character and silenced his critiques yet again. Not sure how long the intellectuals can go on ignoring his talents! Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury's direction is outstanding. The thrilling story is based on Samaresh Mazumdar's novel, - it is the gripping story of Amal - a simple man, born into a poor family who works as a security guard at a mall. He gets tempted by the world of wealth and lust and lives his ordinary life to join the underworld, and gradually gets trapped into the world of greed and crime. All the supporting casts - Srabanti, Tanusree Chakraborty, Sohag Sen, Sudiptaa Chakraborty, Moon Moon Sen have performed their acts exceptionally well. The music and songs have matched the situations perfectly. Shantanu Moitra along with Anindya and Chandril and other singers have done wonders. Specially I was in love with the song - "Zindagi kahin bhi thamti nahin (Life never stops anywhere), " Overall 4.5/5 from me.

Half of the characters in the movie had no purpose or character development
jimygomes17 May 2021
I have read few Samresh Mazumder's novel during my teenage years. And did not find him fascinating. So, I was not hoping this movie to be great. But, I was not hoping it to be pointless like this either. Like at the end of the movie, I had a feeling that the movie is just a squandered opportunity. It had so much potential, but wasted them all. For example, what was the purpose of Addy, or Sohag? They did not add anything to the story. Like if you delete those two characters completely, you would still arrive at the plot end without any problem. Similar thing can be said about Badal vai, Dev's visit to his ancestorial home to Bangladesh, and the pointless lenghty ending after Tanusree left. There were so many good actors cast into this moview that if the writer and director consolidated their message and focused on some key characters and their evolution throughout the story, it could have been a masterpiece. Instead it was at the end a pontless time waster.

Superb
vishal-kundu16 August 2014
A must watch..! A film made in heaven.. a life of a common man..his change from being the simple Amal to an unknown supplier from and to different countries.. his situation of desperation to end up needs of his family.. a good life for his love interest to making it big with one shot.. one can easily relate to Amal..

though the story line could have been made a little bit better with a more thrilling climax.. a little more suspense at the end should have grossed it a "Suspense Thriller" genre.. and the cinematography needs an applaud..it made it look more realistic..and the main thing..the music..Shantanu Moitra did a superb job..and Director Aniruddha Roy Choudhury placed it very well and maintained the pace..the songs fitted very well with some truly awesome lyrics and background score

Dev must learn acting first 🤣
JamesPolok24 May 2023
Devastating acting from the hero Dev who doesn't have the clear idea when & how he should react or which situation how to show emotion or not & he just only utters hush hash sound throughout the whole movie in every scene LoL.

Director wanted to make Bunohash as an art and a thriller movie simultaneously.

Irrelevant story, screenplay & Ending as well as.

The director portrays the hero as a naive & innocuous person from the very begining of the movie but at the end of the movie when the hero who first touched the Pistol in his life & later on he killed a villain by just a shot from a long distance.

Pure piece of ridicule.

Underrated But Must Watch
sounaksaha-640305 April 2020
This is Dev's one of the finest performance ever. Nowadays he kind of getting trolled by netizens. But this film is a masterpiece of this Bengali actor. Wonderful story, great script writing, promising supporting cast, awesome music, beautiful screenplay, acting all the things portrayed beautifully. Unlike other stereotypical bengali offbeat films, this film ends with a mind blowing open ended climax with spectators with their own interpretation that's why this is a must watch for every Bengali movie lovers, offbeat movie lovers and always Dev's lovers.

A great Wild Goose Chase
rupam-chakraborty30 August 2014
Buno Haansh, a wild goose chase by the protagonist. Amal(Dev) a lower middle class honest Bengali boy who works as security guard in a shopping mall manages his family with monthly income of Rs.7000. His life changes when he meets his childhood friend Robin on duty and the later takes him to Madam(Moon Moon Sen) who entrust Amal with a job of receiving and delivering goods between countries. Movies keeps you back on your seat when Amal does a job to earn extra money with the help of Rijula(Tanushree). Does this extra money leads him to the dark world, will he be able to come out of it ? Will Amal be able to escape this wild goose chase ?

Anirudha Roy chowdhury is well known for his urban complex love story which we have seen in Aparajita Tumi. This film he made a 360 degree turn. In this movie there is thrill, every character is playing their game and the game plan changes for each character in the family. Amal a simple honest man who waits for his chance to secure a better life. He cries when he visit his home in Bangladesh, get restless and never looses his simplicity in the whole journey. The other characters which are Amal's Boudi(Sister-in-law) whose presence makes you believe the small aspiration that lady of the house feels. Rijula a lady completely bounded by lust for money which is reflected in her eyes and body language and last not the least Sohag college crush of Amal who savors the moment and scares everyday as she succumbs to cancer every day.

All in all Buno Haansh is a must watch Bengali film as it explores the another paradigm of Bengali movie.

Some great performances with magnificent cinematography!
ajijrahaman-0843719 February 2024
Finally I watched it..it takes almost 10 years to come over to this perticular dev movie. After watching this..now I can say it's actually ahead of its time..all the performances are great..i actually shocked after realising that this movie shot at real locations..the bgms of this movie are perfect. Firstly it makes you emotional and then the thrill takes you to the end and leave you with an unsatisfactory ending..the editing..the screenplay all are great..never thought this movie can be that good in cinematography..i am a little bit unsatisfied with the ending of the story..the twists and turns engaged you all the time..you never bored..it you are a Bengali movie lover then you should give it a watch. That's it..

Not a bad effort ...
mysonamartya28 January 2016
BUNO HAANSH unfolds the story of an unsuspecting youth who gets trapped in the activities of an International smuggling racket. Amol (Dev) lives in a poor colony in Kolkata with his Mother, elder brother and his wife. Theirs is a needy family. Through his friend's contact Amol meets an influential lady of the nefarious group (MoonMoon Sen). Soon, he is criss-crossing the world, from Dacca to Bangkok, meeting dubious people and handing over illegal stuff to them. In the process, Amol moves further away from his family and his lady-love (Srabonti) who is battling a debilitating ailment..

In Bangkok Amol meets a mysterious girl J (Tanusree Chakraborty). She reveals to Amol that she did a course in tourism in Kolkata and was recruited by a travel company for a plum assignment in Bangkok. When she reached Bangkok, her passport was taken away by the company and she was coerced to work as an Escort. She somehow managed to grab her passport and flee from that place. Now goons are on the lookout for her...

The film is based on a story by Samaresh Mazumdar and directed by Aniruddha Roy Choudhury. The director ARC is repeatedly working to expand the breadth of meaningful Bengali cinema in terms of locales. In his APARAJITA TUMI he shot at several cities in the United States. Even in this film he takes the Bengali viewer to Dacca, Bangkok and other International destinations.

The director keeps the ending open-ended. I particularly liked the way the film ended. None of the relationship is taken towards a logical conclusion. The character of J is quite interesting. She is ambitious and quite ethical in her dealings. She is practical too, and when Amol could not get a Visa, J doesn't let her sentiments bog her down.
