Could've been better
Luv2Spooge3 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
They did a good job to create the mystery. I was mixed feeling at first how they revealed the tie between Max and the couple so early on, but it worked out for them and actually add to the mystery.

However, the ending was so weak that it leaves you just feeling robbed of investing an hour and half. It's like all that build up for a weak ending that doesn't justify the time spent.

Anyways, I read a lot of people needed the ending explained. It's actually quite easy. Remember when she first came to visit? She said it to the guy, "I would kill to have a cabin like this."

And.. well... she did.

I guess it's not terrible
FeastMode9 April 2023
Gone in the Night is a mildly intriguing movie with an interesting story. It's helped by non-linear story-telling. I didn't hate watching it. It's not a terrible choice if you really have nothing else to watch.

Why didn't I like it more? I don't really know. I just wasn't that engaged. I could tell it was more of a streaming-level movie. I looked up that it had a limited theatrical release, but it's not theater-worthy in my eyes.

I also found the story to be mostly predictable. Maybe I watch too many movies. I think others will enjoy this much more if they don't see everything coming. But you're probably better off rewatching a great movie instead. (1 viewing, 4/8/2023)

A Shame Ryder has to make such rubbish....bad as even a B movie
danew134 August 2022
It begins with a decent build up, buy slowly decends into absurdity. At the end, there is no end...no real dramatic resolution...it just ends and you wonder why you watched this. Just plain bad.

Predictable and boring.
DeepRest3 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The second the other couple appears, they both look sinister af. Surprise! They were responsible for the disappearance of Kath's (Winona Ryder's character) boyfriend. In a movie like this, you should never be one step ahead of it. I was ten steps ahead of it. I'm not a person who tries to outsmart a movie. I prefer to be surprised. But there are no surprises to be had with this movie. None. It even shows the boyfriend having already met the couple thirty minutes into the movie, just to spell it out for anyone who might even be remotely curious as to whether or not they are guilty.

I knew that the owner of the cabin was in on it as well. Why introduce him, have him show such a strong interest in helping WR's character, if he wasn't going to tie into the "twist" somehow? He rented the cabin to both couples for the same night, and not one question as to why or how that happened? When he mentioned his father died from a genetic blood disorder and that he was experimenting with his own treatment, that filled in the WHY part. The couple. The guy is probably the father of one of them, and they took WR's boyfriend so he could use his blood to experiment with.

Still doesn't sound silly? Turns out, the father's not dying. He's using Kath's boyfriend to stay and feel younger. Huh? What? He was looking for a cure to his father's illness and accidentally discovered the fountain of youth? He didn't look any younger than his character would have been, unless he was playing a character in his 80s. Being that his son was in his early to mid 20's, I don't think that to be the case. That reveal rendered the entire movie to be one gigantic waste of time. Then when Kath says that she wants to do it too, with her boyfriend lying right next to her, the dad and son just say, "Okay!" and turn on the psycho girlfriend. "Oh no! Kath tricked us! She wasn't cool with us draining her boyfriend's blood after all!" Also, matching blood types don't seem to be an issue in this movie's universe.

This movie is as dumb as every character in it. The girlfriend was psychotic for absolutely no reason. This movie exists for no reason. I initially gave it 4 stars, because I like Winona Ryder and John Gallagher Jr. As actors. The more I started writing this review, the less stars I wanted to give it. Those two actors deserve much better than this. Dermot Mulroney, as well. I'm giving it three stars for those three actors, and that's being generous to this movie. Damn, this movie is dumb.

Fast forward to the last 30 mins
twizzlerfreakk6 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was a complete clickbait. A good description on Hulu and then a standstill image of a well known actress to draw you in. Then you get hit with a movie filled with nothing but filler shots. You can literally fast forward to the last 30 minutes of the movie and understand the whole plot without any other context and save you some time. I am convinced these streaming platforms are legally bound to throw out crap movies just to reach a quota. Also, there was no explanation of how blood from a random stranger was supposed to make you younger? So many unanswered questions. The ending with Ryder putting her hands on glass is laughable.

Very lame movie. Wish I didn't spend $7.99 on this disappointment of a movie. Save your money and rent a movie that is actually good. The ending especially was the worst.

Good but not great
gavynhelfyre20 July 2022
This is a fun little movie. It's not the most clever mystery, but it's interesting enough that it didn't overstay its welcome (and I say that as someone who mostly figured it out fairly early). The flashback structure is hit or miss, sometimes giving you enough to make you more intrigued, and sometimes dispelling the tension it's already built. I knew absolutely nothing about the movie before I saw it, and I left happy to have seen it. It's nothing you'll be talking about weeks later, but it's an enjoyable way to spend 90 minutes.

flashbacks are the story
ferguson-621 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Greetings again from the darkness. There is a fine line between movies that cheat and those that cleverly keep us guessing. The first feature from writer-director Eli Horowitz and Matthew Derby seems to fully embrace cheating as a storytelling structure, relegating us to merely observing rather than guiding us as engaged participants. The film opens with a severely mismatched couple driving deep into the woods for a weekend getaway. We've all heard that "opposites attract", but Kath (an excellent Winona Ryder) and Max (John Gallagher Jr) have been together for a year, and not only do they have opposite life goals, the two can barely hold a conversation. It's not just awkward, it makes no sense that these two could have co-existed for so long.

Their drive leads to a 'cabin in the woods' set-up, as another couple is already settled in. The double-booking leads to another awkward exchange with Max pleading to let them stay the night ... two unfamiliar couples sharing the cabin. Taciturn and creepy Al (Owen Teague) and overly exuberant Greta (Brianne Tiu) agree and soon the four are drinking together and playing an adult board game that exposes more personality divides. Despite dating the younger Max, or perhaps because of it, Kath is transitioning into a quieter middle-age life stage. Max is a childish man constantly pressuring Kath to be 'more adventurous. Al and Greta have an "open" relationship, and she's unapologetically flirty with Max, while Al mostly scowls. Kath heads off to bed before the others, and when she wakes up the next morning, an upset Al informs her that Max and Greta took off together.

So, Kath does what no real person would do. She heads back to her life as a horticulturalist and enjoys the solitude ... right up until she finally reacts the way every other human would have initially. She wonders why long-time boyfriend Max didn't bother to call or text or mail a postcard. This kicks off her (too late) mission of solving the mystery, and it leads her to connect with the mysterious Barlow (Dermot Mulroney), the owner of the cabin. Kath and Barlow go on a stakeout and end up telling personal secrets to each other - including details of the genetic illness that affected his father and may impact Barlow as well. They seem to connect despite the oddity that brought them together.

Director Horowtiz abuses the flashback crutch by filling in the many otherwise unexplainable gaps that exist in the actual timeline. It's during these segments when we learn about the characters and circumstances that brought them together, although, to the film's credit, it does allow us to experience the final reveal as it happens. There are some nice touches throughout, including shots of a shipping container behind the cabin that is visible from multiple spots and at various times. Kath's work with plants provides a certain symmetry, and Barlow's backstory is interesting. Perhaps the most unique element here is with only five main characters, the story involves four distinct generations: boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z (maybe not exact birthdates, but close enough). The cabin in the woods put us on high alert early on, but the reliance on flashbacks taints the twists to such an extreme that the ultimate reveal of 'the cow' is a bit of a letdown, and still feels like cheating.

Decent because of Winona
doorsscorpywag5 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Gone In The Nights tells the tale of Kath who has a bit of a pillock of a boyfriend who then dumps her overnight when having a weekend cabin retreat.

They get there and find another couple are booked as well so both have to hunker down.

Kath's fella sneaks off with the younger woman leaving her there with the woman's very strange boyfriend Al.

She takes it on the chin at first then decides to find that woman by contacting the owner.

Cue Kath being attracted to Dermot Mulroney who says he will help her with her search.

The story is told via flashbacks which give us important background and 'seem' to tell a story that 'seems' to be a conspiracy but all is not as it 'seems'.

The ending is decent enough even if it was telegraphed a bit.

I got it slightly wrong but in the right area.

We find out why it was/is called The Cow which is interesting.

The end scene with Winona is rather well done.

Acting from Winona and Mulroney is as you would expect, pretty good. The rest of the cast so-so but not too bad.

90 minutes probably about right as the script is not exactly Alfred Hitchcock.

It's something worth watching if you have time to kill but nothing to worry about if you miss it.

I gave it 5 but added 1 for Winona who played her part well.

When bad movies happen to good actors
felixbynum-688453 August 2022
All the actors in this lazily written, poorly conceived thriller have been really good in other movies and shows so the blame can't be put on them. The dialogue almost makes me think this was a parody. It's paced like a bad Lifetime movie. Don't waste your time. You will never get that 90 minutes back.

Flawed but I loved almost every minute of it
jtindahouse15 August 2022
'Gone in the Night' is one of those films that I know is riddled with problems, but I don't care - I loved almost every minute of it. The cast was just strong enough that I decided I needed to see it, based on the IMDb rating I could easily have skipped over this one otherwise. What I got was everything I love in a mystery/thriller film.

If you're in a dusty mood or this isn't your favourite genre you could easily find a lot to hate about the film. Nobody is going to take that away from you. The plot has some holes, logic goes out the window at certain points and the flower shop negotiation scene was one of the worst things I've ever seen put to screen. Even I'll happily bag that. How that made it into the final cut I'll never know.

However, if you're in a great mood or this is just the type of movie you absolutely love, then I would suggest you're going to have a great time. The cast has some fun names in it and they give it their all. The plot, for all its flaws, is never boring and has a lot of fun and dark twists along the way. The film is also edited in a very clever way so that the reveals come later in the story. I had a blast with this film and have no shame in giving it a perhaps generous 8/10.

NOTE: The barrel gave me 'Megan is Missing' PTSD.

A Little Predictable But Not Bad
stevendbeard24 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I saw Gone in the Night, starring Winona Ryder-Stranger Things_tv, Beetlejuice; John Gallagher Jr.-Underwater, Peppermint; Owen Teague-Montana Story, the It movies; Brianne Tju-I Know What You Did Last Summer_tv, 47 Meters Down:Uncaged and Dermot Mulroney-Hanna_tv, Young Guns.

This is a mystery/horror thriller. Winona and John are a couple that have been dating for about a year and decide to rent a cabin in the woods to get away from everything. When they get there, another couple, Owen and Brianne, are already there-it seems that it was double booked. They all decide to share the cabin and everything is hunky dory until the next morning, when Winona awakens to find John and Brianne are gone-in the night. Owen-crying like a baby-tells Winona that he caught the two making out and they left together in the middle of the night. Winona goes home but decides something is fishy and wants to track down the owner of the cabin, Dermot, and find Owen or Brianne and hopefully find out what happened to John-she can't seem to reach him by phone. Dermot becomes her sidekick in her search. The events are told out of sequence using flashbacks so you learn what really happened by the end.

It's rated R for language and bloody images and has a running time of 1 hour & 30 minutes.

It's a little predictable-I figured it out about half way through-but it's not a bad movie. I wouldn't buy it on DVD but it would be alright as a rental.

Ridiculous Story told in a convoluted way
McScared23 September 2022
I hated this film. I'm sure you will too.

Why? Because of the writing mainly. I honestly don't understand how Winona Ryder was convinced to be in this garbage film. How do you read a script with so many holes in the plot and not know how bad it will end up. I patiently watched this piece of trash until the end. They didn't even try. So frustrating that people can have this stuff produced.

I think Winona Ryder is a decent actress generally speaking. But her acting can't make up for the poor direction along with terrible writing. I'll try to forgive her for enticing me to waste an hour and a half I'll never get back.

Slow and Unamusing
astanyoung26 July 2022
From the start, I began to wonder if I was just watching a romance movie. Halfway through, I nearly nodded off and began thinking about my credit score. By the end, I was ready to go home and watch something else on Netflix.

This movie is slow to reveal anything resembling a story. I wanted to be lured into the narrative, but even Winona Ryder couldn't keep me interested. The last fifteen minutes should've been more intriguing but we're lost in the previous 75 minutes of development. The characters almost dissolve into pointlessness the longer the story plods on without revealing anything of interest to the audience. This movie isn't even a tease, but more like a ruined joke.

Makes no sense and has false suspense behind the actual story
taygiunta17 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie has some real suspense in the beginning behind what actually happened to Kaths boyfriend. When I first saw this movie I believed it would be a film about her uncovering her boyfriends murderer or finding out about a secret cult but it just turns out to be about her boyfriend being used as a blood cow for a experiment that's believed to provide eternal life or youth from what it seems it's not really very well explained what Nick the character who worked for a biotech company is really doing. Plus the characters Kath and Max have no chemistry. Nor do any of the other characters. The motives behind each character isn't really clear and they're acting seems flat. I feel like this could have been a good story but there was too much unexplained and the end when Kath locks Max, Nick, his son and Greta away just doesn't seem like the reaction she should have had. There's no loose ends tied up at the end of this movie. Could have been a great movie but falls short.

Disappointing
debbiemittleman7 December 2022
I like movies that keep you guessing until the very end and make me go WTF I never saw that coming. This is not one of those. Had this one figured out early on yet I kept hoping there would be a twist to prove me wrong. Nope. Come on, Winona Ryder, you can do better than this! Not much else very noteworthy to say about this movie but they don't like short and sweet reviews here so will keep typing until I meet the minimum character limit and that's not easy to do and it reminds me of trying to write a one page essay for school by using lots of filler words so let's just say I was very very disappointed.

Slow Reveal
jeroduptown16 August 2022
Ryder may not have signed up for an award-winner in this one, but if you can hang on to the plot line long enough - it's a good kind of crazy turny. When her and her boyfriend show up at an Airbnb and find a couple already there, the backstory starts to play.

Great and familiar actors!
I watched this movie because I recognised the actors and had seen the trailer before it intrigued me. I just feel like the story wasn't really there, the pacing was weird too. It was fine FOR me, but it might be good or even great for YOU.

Watch it for yourself!

zack_gideon3 August 2022
The movie sucks. It's a bunch of wack dialogue and the plot is so one dimensional. It's non linear so you get to watch some scenes twice! Yay. Why bother with movies like this? It's not funny, scary, thrilling, engaging or anything of value. Would have rather watched some cooking videos on YouTube than this trash. The end.

Another little Winona Ryder gem - not flawless or mind-blowing, but engaging & twisty
danieljfarthing19 August 2022
Both the two movies wonderful Winona Ryder's made in the past seven years are hidden gems, and while low-key thriller "Gone In The Night" isn't a patch on "Destination Wedding" it's still original, compelling, well paced & nicely played. Imperfect couple Ryder & John Gallagher Jnr get double-booked at a mountain AirBnB cabin (owned by Dermot Mulroney (good)) with hipsters Brianne Tju (superb) & Owen Teague... from where Gallagher disappears, apparently with Tju. Despite some holes, the script (from co-writers Matthew Derby & debut director Eli Horowitz) cleverly cuts timelines to layer up its satisfyingly (if not mind-blowingly) twisty tale. Good stuff.

A decent movie.
willsfamily111 August 2023
I liked it. I had it in my watch list for a while and had been debating giving it a go. I watched despite the poor rating, knowing that neither Winona nor Dermot would connect themselves to a crappy script. Admittedly I was able to call the twist about halfway through, but I still enjoyed watching it unfold. It's a cool concept. With so many reboots and remakes, it was nice to have some original content. I would recommend giving this movie a chance. Ignore the bad ratings and judge for yourself. If you still don't enjoy it then, fair enough but give it a go and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Messy and convoluted
MK_Ultra_4 August 2022
They certainly tried.

When the script writer was staring up at the ceiling trying to piece this screenplay into a film that would be an enjoyable viewing, he/she failed. That should be warning enough of the fate of many that walk into this expecting a well made film and come away wondering how this got greenlit in the first place.

It's a mess. The acting by actors that have been around and you'd think would be able to pull it off, can't, or don't. The story is a series of flashbacks in real-time, seemingly trying to avoid the M Night Sham ending, but just falls completely flat every.single.time.

Convoluted and barely watchable and felt like a made for television type of film.

3 stars is a gift.

Rubbish. I want my 90 mins back.
reginaprezas16 December 2022
Beautiful imagery and not much else. The story had the potential to be good, but fell flat at the end. The ending was trying to be more clever than it actually was. Aging, time lost, love lost, death and immortality are all big themes of this film but the themes overshadowed the actual story, which was poorly written at best. I found the young actors performances so cliche it was almost comical. Where did they get these two? The film missed the mark of mystery or thriller and made me wonder whats the point here? The acting itself was over done and not even Winona Ryder could keep this shipwreck afloat.

Gone (From My Memory) In the Night
JackCowart3419 January 2023
I somewhat invariably hold the opinion that feature-length films should be released in cinemas. With that being said, I have no problem with a movie so poorly conceived going straight to VOD, as I have to imagine the typical viewer would have left the theater feeling as if their time and money had been wasted. The performances range from average to below average, and although the writer's ending was anything but safe, the last act was so outrageously overwrought that I found myself audibly laughing at the surprise "a-ha" moment. All of the suspense and intrigue that had been building up to that point evaporated in an instant. When mystery films are done right, they feel plausible, but occupy a space slightly outside of reality; when they're done wrong, you get a movie like Gone in the Night.
