Smart and fearless and TUNES
sarahjuliet4 February 2023
On paper this very British young adult comedy is made up of so many familiar parts, but the writing is fresh, unpredictable and often riotously funny. The principal roles are perfectly cast - the housemates completely believable as former student friends growing in different directions, and the weirdness, grounded in familiar situations, seems completely natural. I quickly learned I could trust the writers to land each embarrassing situation so I could relax and enjoy the ride. A couple of familiar faces are reassuring but don't distract from the main characters. And whoever chose the music had a LOT of fun - the soundtrack is excellent. After the first run through I missed its company, so I watched it again.

We are rehoming a cat tomorrow, I'm sorely tempted to change his name. At least I'll get him a laser pointer.

Loved this.
chunkyant29 January 2023
This is the kind of comedy we Brits have excelled at for the last 40 years.

Set in a world where at 18 most people inherit a super power, we follow Jen, a 25 year old who still hasn't been granted her power.

There are some cool and original powers in the series. Jen's best friend can channel the dead, her mum has the power to control Tech but has no clue how modern gadgets work and we meet a man who can 3D print items from his arse, graffiti artists who can walk on walls and a woman trapped in the body of a teenage girl.

Although the main plot is following Jen as she tries to fit in and find her ability, the show is filled with brilliant characters and great sight gags.

Full of toilet humour and sure to offend many it's truly funny.

Worth a binge watch
kendallforbes29 January 2023
I must admit, when Disney+ first recommended this to me I expected it to be an American show aimed at teens, and I immediately wrote it off. Thank goodness my curiosity later prevailed!

Set in the UK, Extraordinary is centred around a group of 25 year olds in a world where everyone has powers... except Jen.

Much the same energy as Sex Education and Derry Girls, it shows (mostly) real life situations, turned up a notch thanks to shape-shifting, super strength, teleportation, and flight.

Each episode is around 30 mins and has a mid-credit scene. Great casting, writing, and relatable storylines make this a must watch for any fan of British comedy/drama.

Relieved to see it has already been confirmed for a second season.

Please ignore reviews
cpcarpitella26 January 2023
I rarely if ever write reviews but I'm really taken aback by some of these reviews. This show is so well written, incredibly smart, and simply a delight to watch. The way they thought through how average people would utilize having powers is inspired. If you're looking for yet another superhero show without a plot or humor, then this isn't for you. But if you enjoy humor, smart writing, something unpredictable, and new, then this is for you! I feel as though people are so used to superpowers to mean action without any thought, concept, or acting, which may explain the other reviews. Enough Marvel, more of this!!

Please ignore the narrow-minded reviews and give this a watch!

What is says on the tin-Extraordinary
atleverton4 February 2023
I have always liked Superhero movies that did not take the conventional approach to the genre. For example, kick ass, and the Watchmen were my favorites for some time, and despite people's hatred for it, I kind of dug Ironman 3. Extraordinary tells the story of a woman without superpowers in a world where everyone has superpowers. The superpowers are kind of irrelevant to the story, it's just the story of an unextraordinary person who does not know what her purpose is. It is full of very meaningful moments, and hilarity. There are very few things that I can watch by myself and laugh out loud and this is one of them. The actors are great, and the writing is superb.

THIS IS EPIC
sergior-0291726 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Just discovered that show 4 hours ago... and now, 4 hours later, I am immediately writing this review! Don't even know where to start.. performance of the actors is so great! The characters are unique and memorable, even smaller episodic roles feel so well thought through and well written! (PDF Guy will shine someday I hope xD) the music is so fresh and energetic (I already downloaded the playlist on spotify) The music and the overall playful aesthetic actually remind me of Scott Pilgrim in the best possible way!! That comic-like nature of the whole show and all the small details.. My highlight is the character Carrie.. I am amazed by this character, all the fun situations she gets into, and I am amazed by the actresses performance - I hope she will read this - I am your huge fan! Jizzlord is so fun too - over the whole season he grew into a very likeable character!

Overall, I hope there will be more from that show in the future, it just made my day!!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

So good.
noamben-9521728 January 2023
Let's just say it - there is no really a plot twist, or a plot at all but that's just doesn't matter.

It's just pure fun and laughs

You'll watch the show with constant smile on your face along with laugh out moments from time to time, and wow - every joke just land with perfect timing

Jenn is so fun to watch, brilliant actor - cool, beautiful, weirdo.

The other cast members are really great too, loved the vigilanties crew, there are really good comedy moments with those.

The world building is quite cool and quirky, similar vibes to the brilliant show misfits, but much funnier and more "open"

An ordinary woman in a world where everyone has superpowers. Dirty genre, rated 18+
folk_egm26 January 2023
The story of Jane, an ordinary woman in a world where everyone has superpowers. So she became the black sheep of society. Only her friends help her to find her own power.

This is the ultimate low-cost superhero series. Not focusing on showing power using CG at all, but focusing on selling dramatic stories, life issues in the world that reflect interestingly to the new generation in today's society. A little emotional And the most wicked comedy 18+ of the story invites you to laugh continuously from beginning to end. It's good enough for you to try and open it to watch (one episode is short, 25 minutes).

It's ridiculous funny
Luce141728 January 2023
I had to write a review about this show. It's just so great. I love everything about it. I was waiting for a light comedy and that's what it is. The writing is so well done, all the characters are so well written. For once I live all the characters, also the actors are all great. Live to see new faces and these guys are just nailing it. The plot is very good and you might think it's a superhero/xmen stuff but not really. I love the feel too, the wardrobe is very colorful too.

The format is also nice, I wish it was a hour long but this is okay. Looking forward to more, sometimes new ideas Pay off and this one is one of them.

Some very good ingredients that were not quite fully cooked
rogelioramirez-1086913 March 2023
One easy war to describe Extraordinarily could be, xmen, but it's a comedy.

Another way to describe it, not much in the plot, but instead in style would be: "What we do in the shadows", but with superheroes instead of vampires.

That specific kind of British humor tries to demystify a certain fantastical element by marrying it with the mundane modern world and culture, looking to create a humorous tone dissonance of sorts. (like wwdits or ghosts)

And personally, I love the idea, I don't want to say brilliant because it's nothing new, but I think it's a great concept that lends itself really well to create a lot of fun situations, which is kind of the point of this kind of comedy.

In respect to how well this is accomplished, I would say its a bit of a mixed bag. I did find a lot of the situations funny or at least fun, and I thought a lot of references or details were somewhat clever or funny elements (like the mother who has the power to control technology but is so un-savvy that she always needs a co-pilot to help her navigate her own power or the pizza place called "the pizza bucket"), the truth is that a lot of the jokes are not very funny, its not rare that we see a scene that is trying hard, for a bit too long, to create a joke that, to me, personally, didn't really come together (like the scene with Hitler´s resurrection, or the racist country singer in ep 3), and while the general premise does work really well and a lot of elements are well crafted, the truth is that the characters themselves (and therefore the dialogue) prevented the show from reaching its true potential(to me personally).

The only character I only like so far is the medium girl, and sadly, a lot of her scenes are quite underwhelming, her boyfriend i don't really get, the main character I started liking, but it feels like she's getting flanderized into her pathetic petty loser role faster than you can say flash, and I think the humor with the boss turned child is just sort of... trashy.

I think extraordinary proves a fundamental truth of comedy series, it doesn't matter how good your plot is, the true juice of the show is going to be the characters and their interactions, and this element, to me, lacked just a bit of work, it's not terrible, but it definitely hindered the experience for me, let's see how it turns out, but for the moment, I give this a sort of fun 6.5/10.

No witches or werewolves, just people
A_Different_Drummer25 January 2023
When Tim Kring's HEROES first appeared in 2007 -- about humans born with odd abilities -- it was a cultural milestone. Even late-night talk show hosts could not resist praising the series. That was then, this is now. Now shows about people with "powers" abound. This Disney UK release approaches the topic from the viewpoint of "coming of age," with notes of empathy, deadpan British humor, and overall sweetness. Good casting, good acting, and good scripts generally deliver the goods. Not an action series, not an adventure series, no werewolves or witches. Just people. Recommended. Uneven
asc8524 March 2023
There are 8 episodes to this series. Episode 1 was fantastic, as was Episode 3, so I thought this could be one of my favorite shows of 2023. Alas, Episodes 2, and 4-7 were just OK. The finale, Episode 8 was good, and gives a preview to how Season 2 will start. I definitely plan on watching it.

Carrie, the best friend who can channel spirits is probably my favorite character so far. Her boyfriend, Kash, has a ridiculous story line, and quite frankly, he annoyed me, and his storyline annoyed me.

The character that I had wished they'd shown more of was Darcy Porter Cassidy, who plays Jen's manager at the party store, who's superpower is that she looks like a tween, even though she is probably in her 50's. She steals every scene she is in.

Great premise, good acting, soundtrack ruins it
andy-goris16 January 2024
Great premise that the writers and actors use for great humor. Each episode is rich with people with new superpowers and they use them in hillarious ways. I give the writers A+ for creativity. The actors execute well, with just a little over-acting. The pace is a tad fast. It would do to be about 10% slower so you can take it all in.

They use the superpower thing to create humor, sadness, curiosity, fear, obnoxiousness, camaraderie, naiveté, surprise, and dozens of other emotions. Again, a great premise well written.

Unfortunately the soundtrack is the worst I've ever experienced. The volume of the sound track is 10dB over the voice track, the music selection is terrible, and the music cuts in at the worst times. If there was a way to completely delete the music and just watch with the rest of the audio, I'd stay with the series, but after a few episodes I just couldn't take it.

I wish my superpower was to ignore the music track :-).

I'd give it an 8 without the music. 5 with.

It's Good
GalAlba25 January 2023
It's good.

I'm just relieved to watch anything these days that isn't a spiteful pseudo moral lecture set to marginalise normal people. Extraordinary is extraordinary in so much as it is a new TV show that doesn't do the afore mentioned and is genuinely funny, accessible & touching.

Good work everybody.

The lead actress is wonderfully relatable & has a touch of screen magic about her.

I've only watched the first episode, but, I do hope this nugget of escapism continues in the vain it's set out in.

P. S. Like the aesthetic too. It has a touch of the 70s/80s about it. There's something nostalgic in the viewing.

Misfits meets Spaced
m_imdb-944-370181 February 2023
Totally refreshing tv. Stumbled across this after seeing an ad. 2 episodes in and I was hooked.

If you liked the weird vibe that the legendary tv series Misfits gave you and are a fan of the unbeatable Spaced with Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Jessica Haynes then this is a show you can get into.

It's not high budget, but the cast are brilliant. Each character has a back story you want to explore, and have difficult intricate quirks that add to the story.

The lead played by Máiréad Tyers bring a realism to the happenings that works in this unusual world. The entire cast are perfectly cast in this unusual setting.

Is it for everyone? No Is it worth watching? Yes Did I laugh? Oh yes!

Did I cry? No, but got feels Did I binge it? Yes, I had to.

Where did I watch it? Star on Disney+ (uk)

A Great Superhero Show and a Great Comedy!
aarongregoryj12 March 2024
I am SUPER impressed with this show. It's like a combination of Heroes and Spaced, and just as good as either at it's best. The show is written by first time writer Emma Moran and she is a truly talented and original voice. The show is genuinely funny. It's just the right amount of raunchy, has likeable characters, and at it's core it's a goodhearted show with real warmth. I wish I had more to say about it, but I'm still in the middle of the first season, and felt compelled to add a good review in hopes that it might give the show even the smallest bump on imdb. It's the best show I've seen in a while and I hope there's more to come, at least more by Emma Moran.

Extraordinary indeed
Imashelbob11 March 2024
Reviewing after finishing season 1:

I L O V E this show. It's funny, quirky, touching, it is everything. The characters are multifaceted which means they are likeable, annoying, frustrating and relatable.

The acting is really superb, at least by most characters. My favourite is jizzlord but Carrie is also doing an amazing job playing multiple (famous) characters. If I had to choose my least favourite it would be Kash. But I guess he's there for Carrie's arch...

The soundtrack is fantastic. So many good tunes! It is just such a fun little show and I am so happy I stumbled upon it! Looking forward to starting season 2.

She's quirkless. Like deku.
ksunofficial29 January 2023
I felt the whole time I watched, like they had stole plot ideas from my hero academia.

Somehow, I was okay with that. The whole show was a bit deviant and smart. Very enjoyable would recommend.

I feel like it was very good, but also missing some thing. It could have been done better. But was still good enough, without the special flare. It didn't use a lot of cgi or big budget sfx. Just a slice of life style of story.

The episodes could have been longer, or had more of them. I feel like TV shows these days are just too short. The seasons don't last long enough eight episodes or 12 episodes none of that is enough to tell a real story.

I don't write reviews
tristankb26 January 2023
I'll repeat that I don't write in Reviews because it's that important that I just don't... but I will for this show! This hidden gem popped up in my suggestions and I'm thankful it did! I don't want to give a lot of spoilers but it's definitely worth a watch. If you fear British humor don't be scared. It has a slice of that and so much more!! I think we binged at least seven episodes in a row and I wish I could stay up late... I really love the premise, and I love that the characters are so believable, realistic, and enjoyable, to get to know... you become immersed in their world and want to be a part of it... give it a try!

Ruined by Kash and Jizzlord
bbartolome30 March 2024
I'm clearly not the target audience for the show but Jen and Carrie are lovely and likable characters for all their Gen Z/A faults. The show is at its best when they focus on their friendship but awful when it comes to Kash and Jizzlord, two incredibly horrible characters. Jizzlord is not as cute as the writers think he is and he doesn't deserve Jen and Kash is the lowest type of human being I've ever seen on a comedy show - this a-hole is NOT funny and should be killed off. If it gets another season they should get rid of both Kash and Jizzlord - the two characters are completely unnecessary and don't add anything to the show.

Brilliant
big-ben-ellis7 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
3 episodes in and I love it. Brilliantly casted, wouldn't change a character, or any of the actors who play the roles. Excited to see the rest of the season. My favorite part, it's weird, but when Jen is forced into the dentist by her friend. The dentist's receptionist asked if they have an appointment and Jen says to the receptionist, "f@?k you!.". I don't know why that was so hilarious but at the time that was the last thing I expected for Jen to say. The rest of the scenes, so far, are hilariously written. Jen's half sisters birthday scene was great, the lead up to her half sister getting her power was so funny. Give this show a chance, but if you have fragile ears then maybe Barney will suit you, otherwise, I dig this show. Also, I love the cat, you'll see why.

Fresh Quirky Rom-Com Series!!!
misterw20003 April 2024
This rom-com series is a riot-think superhero shenanigans meets romantic mishaps. It's a refreshing break from the typical superhero flicks we're all tired of.

Each episode is like unwrapping a surprise gift, keeping you hooked with its unexpected twists and turns.

Binge-worthy. Spend a rainy weekend indoors with this gem of a series. You won't regret it. The characters' interactions feel natural, none of that forced drama nonsense. It's like hanging out with your wacky friends, minus the awkward silences.

My only complaint? Make the episodes longer!

Sometimes it feels like they end too soon, leaving you craving for more laughs.

Overall, a must-watch for anyone craving a good laugh and a fresh take on the superhero scene.

Atrocious main characters
smagius7 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This series starts of funny and light with odd situations, sex jokes and what could be a relatable situation.

The more it advances though the more horrible the main character turns out without apparent consequences or remorse.

By episode 4 we know she is more than willing to abuse any advantage she has to ridicule, diminish and humiliate her sister. She is a parasite to her friend, a cruel merciless bully when she can to her little step sister ... by episode 4 and it keeps getting worse.

She assaults people because she can (and apparently no one reacts except for some very mild words). I mean seriously there should be some kind of consequences for an out of shape idiot assaulting people at random.

I really liked the beginning but now I am considering stopping after the 6th episode, the main character is to hard to watch especially without the obvious and predictable consequences she should have faced.

The best thing since sliced bread
jayclaurence3 March 2023
This is the funniest most entertaining and heartfelt series I've watched in YEARS!! And I watch a lot of TV. If this doesn't go to a second series I'll give up TV forever. I was apprehensive watching a series about super piers but it's not the main focus. It's about people and their lives. It's honestly amazing. Great sound track too. Hard to watch just before bed because all you want to do is dance and keep watching. Very easy to binge in a day and no wholes in the plot when you binge. Can't wait to see where this goes and what comes next. Now just typing to meet the character requirements. WATCH THIS SERIES!!!

Living in a totally normal world with an extra-ordinary twist
gudlaugottosdottir29 January 2023
I saw this show title and thought "eh, I´ll give it a go". I watched the show and I was suprised. The reality the show has... I just loved that it felt like the show´s reality could really be an actual reality - if that makes sense (not too "from another planet" or "aliens have landed on Earth" ....just "Earth. How it´s always been". That it was a totally normal world and nothing too superpower-y about it. It gives this fresh twist on the ordinary and the extraordinary. The music gives it this extra kick that I am all for. The actors make it feel real and up to date and the actor Ms. Oxenham is doing a great job in her role as "Carrie". Keep going Ms. Moran...love it. Hoping for a season 2.
