Fresh off winning the Audience Award at this year’s Toronto Film Festival, “American Fiction” lays out its cynically comic premise in its first trailer. Cord Jefferson’s directorial debut features Jeffrey Wright as a struggling novelist who watches as his competition profits from Black entertainment that plays into cultural stereotypes and offensive tropes to the huzzahs of white cultural gatekeepers. In a moment of “If you can’t beat them, join them,” he uses a pen name to write a conventionally stereotypical memoir only to watch the book become a cultural focal point and a best-seller.

It’s ironic but unavoidable that the greatest annual celebration of film should be a television special — but that’s just how it is. March often means Oscar season, a time for cinephiles to boot up that small screen you use for movies and use it to see if they win any awards during a telecast.
If you don’t have TV service anymore, Hulu has you covered with a pre-Oscars telecast as well as two red carpet specials before and after the main event. Though the ceremony itself won’t be livestreamed on Hulu, it will be added the next morning, like regular ABC programming. Awards viewership has been in general decline over the past several years, but next-day streaming gives curious viewers a chance to join the conversation and boost those Oscar ratings after the live show. It’s also a chance for superfans to pause and rewind...

The legacy of Robin Williams is the gift that keeps on giving. He was undeniably one of our greatest comedic performers with such classics as "Aladdin," "The Birdcage," and "Mrs. Doubtfire," but perhaps one of his most memorable performances came in the form of director Bobcat Goldthwait's dark comedy "World's Greatest Dad." The film stars Williams as Lance Clayton, an aspiring author whose pile of manuscripts have gone ignored by publishers for years. Without a prosperous writing career, he continues his unfulfilling position as a high school poetry teacher, in which barely anyone attends his class. When tragedy unexpectedly strikes his contemptible...

Following in the deranged footsteps of Bobcat Goldthwait’s “World’s Greatest Dad” — and making good on that lineage in all of the most cringe-inducing ways — . The premise couldn’t be simpler: A clinically depressed twentysomething named Franklin (played by the writer-director himself) emerges from his latest stint in a mental health facility with a new resolve to cut ties with his toxic fuck-up of a father, Chuck (Patton Oswalt). Upon discovering that his son has blocked him on social media, a desperate Chuck decides to catfish his own kid with the fake profile he creates around pictures of a beautiful waitress who works at his local diner (Claudia Sulewski). Hijinks ensue.
Well, “hijinks” might be an insufficient way of describing a scene in which a grown man furiously sexts with his own son… who’s jerking off on the toilet of the motel room they’re staying in together. But...

Chicago – The career of comedian Bobcat Goldthwait is a wild roller coaster of hilarity and passion, so it stands to reason that his latest film is called “Joy Ride.” The film, one of the funniest stand up docs you’ll ever see, also features Bobcat’s comedy partner Dana Gould on a stand up tour right before the pandemic. It’s available through VOD and iTunes, click Joy Ride for details.
“Joy Ride” is essentially a stand-up comedy tour documentary, because it is rooted in the career overviews of Bobcat and Dana. Both men have had trials and tribulations in show business, based on backgrounds that included difficulties in their youth. These situations become their comedy in the film, with Gould especially opening up on a complete meltdown in the 1990s. The Bobcat past highlights are especially telling, and has precipitated a long running feud between the comic and his fellow traveler Jerry Seinfeld.

Bobcat Goldthwait has made a career of dissecting what makes tragedy funny. It’s an impressive second act for the comedian, who was once known primarily for that voice (you know the one) and that character (Zed) from that comedy franchise (Police Academy). Joy Ride, directed by Goldthwait, who co-stars with Dana Gould, documents the duo as they travel across the American South discussing everything from their strange friendship, their similar upbringings, and the severe hypocrisies of conservatism.
At the top, the comedians acknowledge the serious car accident that stunted the beginning of the documentary. It left both with injuries, Goldthwait even sustaining a concussion for his trouble. But no matter, just another piece of solid material on stage. At a breezy 70 minutes, Goldthwait and Gould make an immensely watchable pair. “I didn’t know you were crazier then me?” Goldthwait says of Gould at one point. “Oh yeah,” Gould confidently responds.

“Hello, Atlanta!” Bobcat Goldthwait greets his enthusiastic audience in a small comedy club at the start of “Joy Ride.” “A funny thing happened on the way to the show.” Actually, what happened was a near-fatal 2019 automobile accident that, contrary to contemporary news reports of the mishap, seriously injured Goldthwait and fellow comic Dana Gould while they were driving to a joint stand-up gig. But as this engagingly intimate documentary makes clear: They’re still standing. And doing stand-up.
Goldthwait and Gould prove to be engaging traveling companions offstage and amusing performers in the spotlight throughout “Joy Ride,” Goldthwait’s amiably no-frills account of their 2020 tour of comedy clubs in Los Angeles, Georgia and North Carolina.
The venues where they perform are a few steps short of world-renowned showcases, something Goldthwait indirectly acknowledges during a bit in which he dismisses “fans” who unfollowed him on Twitter after learning of his left-leaning...

Chicago – The career of comedian Bobcat Goldthwait is a wild roller coaster of hilarity and passion, so naturally his latest film is called “Joy Ride.” The film will be co-presented by the Chicago Critics Film Festival at the Music Box Theatre on October 22th, 2021. Bobcat and Dana Gould, his tour partner in the documentary, will attend. Click Joy Ride for details.
“Joy Ride” is one of the funniest examples of stand-up comedy tour documentary, because it is rooted in the career overviews of Bobcat and Dana. “Joy Ride” is an ironic title,...

This article contains Stargirl spoilers.
Stargirl has been one of the few good things about 2020. Smart, impressively crafted, and full of heart, the newest addition to The CW superhero roster has been bringing us some much needed joy. Sadly, the season has ended, but it finished on a high note with an action-packed and emotional episode that tied up some loose ends, had a few shocking surprises, and opened up a lot of potential for the already announced second season that will air exclusively on The CW. Check out our review for a full rundown of the awesome episode, but we’re here to breakdown that wild ending, all those stingers, and answer some of the most burning questions that “Stars & S.T.R.I.P.E. Six years ago this week was the tragic passing of comedy legend Robin Williams. A new documentary is now arriving to shed some light on his final days and the struggles he faced. Robin’s Wish, directed by Tylor Norwood (The United States of Detroit), sets out to detail the actor’s private battle with Lewy Body Dementia and the effect it had on his family, friends, and legions of fans who idolized the peerless performer. The trailer of the film hints at both the public and private life of the star, and how he remained positive and steadfast even as he succumbed to his illness.
Rising to prominence in the television show Mork & Mindy and his stand up specials, Williams then made a prominent career in film, starring in such acclaimed movies as Good Morning, Vietnam, Dead Poets Society, The Fisher King, and his Oscar-winning turn in Good Will Hunting,...

Taylor Swift plays a yacht-owning, model-dating, man-spreading corporate scumbag in the music video for her song “The Man” that dropped Thursday morning, and her transformation into a man is so seamless that at first, you might not recognize it’s her.
In the dramatic video, Swift walks around in full prosthetic makeup looking like a rich and powerful businessman with a fancy job and a private yacht who is generally rude to people and still somehow gets everything he wants.
We watch this version of Swift get applauded for traipsing through the office and fist-bumping people; man-spread on the subway while blowing smoke in some poor woman’s face; pee on the wall of the subway station; describe the shape of a woman’s body using wild hand-gestures; take his daughter to the park one time and get called the World’s Greatest Dad, and so on.

Swift previously shared an animated lyric video for the song, which even included a storyline centered around women rising up in the workplace. But in the newest visual, Swift is The Man himself — boisterous, rude, yelling at his coworkers, smoking cigars on the subway,...

"I wouldn't have made the movie if it wasn't for Robin's encouragement."-- Director Bobcat Goldthwait on Call Me Lucky. The first time I interviewed actor-turned-director Bobcat Goldthwait, it was for the weird and wonderful World's Greatest Dad, starring the late, irreplaceable Robin Williams. (You can read that interview here). The film was an unexpected wallop, and is even more important to me now. Goldthwait continues to switch up his filmmaking, taking on different genres and styles. Last year he made a great horror film called Willow Creek. It's a found footage film, but unlike most found footage films made today, he brought originality and terror to the exhausted sub-genre. There's a 20-minute single take scene that's guaranteed to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand straight...

Without any exaggeration, I would call Bobcat Goldthwait one of the most consistently interesting and original filmmakers working today. When he first started turning out films like "Sleeping Dogs Lie" and "World's Greatest Dad," there was a quick moment where it seemed surprising to me that the guy from the "Police Academy" films could make those movies. That passed, though, and now the surprising part is that someone as thoughtful and articulate and big-hearted could have ever vanished into the character from those movies. I can't connect the guy I've been speaking with on and off for the last five or six years to the guy I saw perform live several times in the '80s, and I find him fascinating as a result. I wasn't nervous about having Bobcat in to the HitFix studios on Tuesday, but I was very nervous about meeting Barry Crimmins, the subject of "Call Me Lucky,...

"It would've been easier to get actual Bigfoot footage," Bobcat Goldthwait says, on having to unearth clips of razor-tongued comedian-activist Barry Crimmins, the subject of his emotionally rich documentary Call Me Lucky. Though the Boston-based stand-up was an influence on no shortage of East Coast alt-comics in the Eighties and Nineties, Crimmins was the guy who bellowed biting jokes about the Hud scandal on Comic Strip Live, thus making his television footprint was relatively small. "It would've been easier to do a Gallagher doc," the director admits.

Read More: Provincetown Film Festival Releases Lineup For 17th Edition Comedian-turned-filmmaker Bobcat Goldthwait's movies are by all accounts edgy, just like his brand of standup comedy that first brought him recognition. It's therefore no surprise that the Provincetown International Film Festival (Piff) named him this year's "Filmmaker on the Edge." The "Police Academy" star made his feature debut with "Shakes the Clown," a twisted comedy that centers on a party clown who spends his free days getting wasted. "Sleeping Dogs Lie," his sophomore film, is a comedy about a woman whose life is thrown into turmoil after she confesses to her fiancé that she once gave a blowjob to a dog. With "World's Greatest Dad," Goldthwait sent up the feel-good comedy genre with a redemptive tale of a father (Robin Williams) who finds his voice after his son dies of autoerotic asphyxiation. His hero in "God Bless America" at one.

Is that the last we'll see of Community or will the hashtag become a reality when six seasons are joined by a movie?
Warning: contains spoilers for Community season 6.
For the first time since 2009, Community just got through a season without the threat of cancellation looming over it at any given moment. NBC finally pulled the plug on Dan Harmon's weird and wonderful series in 2014 after five seasons, but like Arrested Development before it and The Mindy Project since, it got another season by moving online, to the Yahoo! Given how Harmon was fired in 2012, following a harried production schedule on season three and a very public dispute with Chevy Chase over filming, it seems kind of impossible that the show ever got to the six seasons for which the fans campaigned ceaselessly. #SixSeasonsAndAMovie became the rallying cry for Greendale's Human Beings and the lifespan of...

Park City - When you cover film and pop culture for 17 years, you end up writing about an incredibly broad spectrum of topics. Even so, there are things that are obviously more important to you or that you care about more, and for me, one of the things that I have always felt strongly about is stand-up comedy. I took a shot at it early on in life, and very quickly realized that it wasn't for me. As much as I admire the craft, the lifestyle was simply not something I would have survived. There were a number of reasons, but it was a very basic decision when it came down to it. I had something else I loved more, and I can't imagine putting yourself through everything it takes to become a truly great stand-up if you don't love it above and beyond anything else. I'm still friends, though,...

The Sundance Film Festival announced its four main 2015 narrative and competition slates on Wednesday (December 3) and the Us Documentary Competition field is packed with Oscar winners and returning Park City favorites. Leading the way, at least to some degree, is last year's Documentary Oscar winner Morgan Neville, whose "Twenty Feet From Stardom" was one of the openers at the 2013 Festival. Neville and Robert Gordon co-directed "Best of Enemies," which looks at the 1968 televised debates between Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley Jr. "The Cove" Oscar winner Louie Psihoyos is back with "Racing Extinction," which focuses on endangered species and, yes, mass extinction from a variety of viewpoints. Also sporting an Oscar, for the short "Saving Face," is Daniel Junge, who chronicles the life of Evel Knievel in "Being Evel." Both "The Cove" and "Twenty Feet From Stardom" played at Sundance, which has been a fairly reliable feeder for Oscar winners in recent years,...

It is a sad fact that Robin Williams' last few years worth of work has been relegated to On Demand or straight to cable. Films like The Angriest Man In Brooklyn and World's Greatest Dad did not get the exposure the acclaimed Oscar winner had received in years past. While the world is coming to terms with the sudden passing of Robin Williams more and more people are finding wonderful ways to pay tribute. The latest, coming from Atlanta sportscaster Zach Klein, might be the most unique one we've seen yet. During what seems like a typical report, he manages to work in nods to 22 films from the late actor's body of work. There are, of course, obvious references like Mrs. Doubtfire and Patch Adams, but many are incredibly subtle like World's Greatest Dad and The Final Cut. This heartwarming homage only adds to countless messages that have been shared about Robin. In addition to Jimmy Fallon's and Seth Meyers's tributes, there have been a slew of reactions from costars and close friends, and his children have all shared their own touching messages as well. Watch the latest tribute above, and see if you can pick out all 22 Robin Williams films!

Robin Williams has died at the age of 63. The Hollywood star had more than 100 acting credits to his name, and although he'll be largely remembered for his comic roles, looking back through his career it's quickly evident that he was just as talented when it came to drama.
Digital Spy takes a look back at 10 incredible roles, from Good Morning, Vietnam to World's Greatest Dad, below:
1. Good Morning, Vietnam (1987)
One of Williams's earliest and most memorable roles on the big screen came in Barry Levinson's Vietnam war comedy, in which he played radio DJ Adrian Cronauer. 2. Dead Poets Society (1989)

Shocking and upsetting news: Robin Williams has passed away, at the age of 63.
What horrible, horrible news. It's being widely reported that Robin Williams has died, at the age of 63. It appears that he chose to take his own life.
In a statement, Williams' publicist wrote that "Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time".
We sincerely hope that they get that privacy. What a terrible time for them, and our thoughts are very much with them.
It's hard to know where to start digesting this news, and we weren't even related to the man. Williams' work speaks for itself, though, from his mainstream comedy, his movie breakthrough in Good Morning, Vietnam, his lovely, judged drama work in the likes of Dead Poets Society...

I had to stop and think about it. When was the first time I encountered Robin Williams? I'm pretty sure it was reruns of "Mork & Mindy" at a young age, if not the boisterous Oscar-nominated performance he gave in Barry Levinson's "Good Morning, Vietnam." By then he had already dazzled countless audiences in "The World According to Garp." Whatever it was, like so many, it was the start of, as his widow noted in a release, "countless moments of joy and laughter" he would deliver for the next three decades of my life. And now, he's gone. It soon became erratic late night appearances with David Letterman and the like, as the movies flowed in. Terry Gilliam's "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen," for instance, or another, much more timid Oscar-nominated performance in Peter Weir's "Dead Poets Society." He continued to spotlight range and versatility in Penny Marshall...

It was also revealed the 63-year-old Academy Award winner had been seeking treatment for depression. You really can't get any more iconic than Robin Williams, whose performances ranged from the silly and funny to the strange and heartwarming, and everything in between. There wasn't a scene he didn't give his all to, nor a performance that was too crazy to take on. Some of our favorites include Mork & Mindy, Popeye, Good Morning, Vietnam, Dead Poets Society (O Captain! My Captain!), The Fisher King, Aladdin, Mrs. Doubtfire, Good Will Hunting, One Hour Photo and World's Greatest Dad. ...
