One of the Best Surprise Dramas Ever! I loved it!!! Thank You Korea & Netflix
lumiens6 January 2021
Simply stated, this is one of the best police dramas I have ever seen - regardless of its language. I am a 54 year old high school language teacher. I have plenty of experience with daytime soaps and prime time programming here in the United States. We don't leave the house. However, I still feel as if I've traveled to Korea. This was an incredible way of spending our Covid lockdown and I state sincerely that I have enjoyed each and every single one of the 16 episodes - compare it to Hill Street Blues - Korean Style.

"The Good Detective" was very well directed, very well scripted and very well-acted. There was an incredible tension between the protagonists and the villains!!! I cared about the people and I would scream out loud so often that my family forced me to watch in my bedroom.

So many of the episodes ran me through an emotional gamut - the acting/direction was top notch. The plot twists and engaging characters drew me in and kept me watching. I would say that I liked this even more than "El gran hotel" - which, if you have seen it, is very high praise. (I've watched "Gran Hotel" more times that I will admit - I teach languages :) )

I hope for a second season. Nevertheless, this season was perfect. You never want to say good-bye to friends. And, if this is all we get from these characters, I understand. At least I can watch it over and over again on Netflix when I need to see them again.

Good Detective Thriller!
wheatley-2023021 July 2021
A satisfying plot with plenty to keep you guessing, but that is what I have come to expect from Korean dramas. My inability to remember the names did make it hard to follow at times, but it kept me watching.

What made the series stand out, though, was the wonderfully drawn relationships, for example between the detective and his sister and between the reporter and her editor. Perhaps the most compelling was between the convicted murderer and his daughter. Jo Jae-yoon played the father to perfection.

The Good Detective
Tweekums25 January 2023
This South Korean series is set primarily in the city of Incheon. Our protagonists are veteran detective Kang Do-chang, who tends to rely on his long experience and the connections he has made, and Oh Ji-hyuk, an up-and-coming high flier who relies on firm evidence and psychological insight into the suspects. They are part of Violent Crime Division Two; while other team members are secondary they are still important to the series.

In the first season questions are raised concerning the guilt of a man sentenced to hang. Do-chang is initially convinced that he is the killer but as the investigation progresses he starts to have his doubts. As the season progresses more suspects emerge and questions are raised about the initial investigation.

The second series sees the team caught up in a serial killer case after they arrest a suspect in a minor case yards away from where a body is found the next day. The serial killer is being hunted by a team from Seoul and their leader is keen to blame the arrested man, who has unfortunately now been released. Events lead to the case being swiftly closed; but then another body is found... is it a copycat or did the police get the wrong man? Even after a killer is arrested questions remain about one of the victims and suspicion falls on those at the top of one of Korea's most powerful conglomerates.

I thought this was a really enjoyable series. Each season provides a good mystery with plenty of interesting characters. The stories are told in a way that keeps the viewer ahead of the detectives but not too far. This means the twist, of which there are quite a few, are still fun without feeling as if they come out of nowhere. As anybody who has watched any Korean dramas would expect there is a good degree of comedy; this comes from the characters rather than forced gags. The cast does a really fine job creating characters the viewer it likely to care about so moments of tension can have one worrying about their safety. Overall I'd definitely recommend this to fans of Korean crime drama.

These comments are based on watching the series in Korean with English subtitles.

Entertaining food for thought!
croxcatto-maria-ivana11 November 2020
I like that the story is so human, compelling, and interesting. I find character depth good, in a sense that each one has a very distinctive way of thinking and doing things. The storyline portrays a rich puzzle of perspectives in relation to the same situation, and feelings about what happened, and what each one can/should do. Detective story is interesting, and makes me want to continue watching to see what would happen next. Lots of trascendental questions shown in simple terms. I like very much that the whole story is about one case, and not a different case in each episode. Really good!

Pretty solid male lead but the female 3rd was abysmal
elyyyyy18 February 2023
The lead trio is quite uneven. The story gets draggy. The old male detective was a good lead. I can see the struggle, the battle within his eyes when he is trying to decide which way to go. His performance was solid. The young male detective was second. I would like to see a bit more explosiveness in his performance, but overall not bad acting. The female lead, well, that's the whole reason I feel I need to write a review. She is very pretty and it ended there. From the very beginning, her acting just wasn't catching up with others. There is no noticeable difference in her performance, facial expressions in terms of being happy, sad, shocked, annoyed. She has one facial expression and that was all. Every time the camera pointed to her, I was like...well...you need to act! Stop just saying words. All the normal human reactions when a reporter hearing things, I don't see it.

Why are you not dead
alaningle718 November 2021
A veteran police officer gets paired with a rookie, the older detective uses experience and contacts whilst the younger who doesn't show emotions, works on the criminals psyche. Throw in the mix a female reporter and you have an interesting murder mystery series. Solid character, good cast and a well paced storyline make this an enjoyable watch.

Detective work is a Job!
KatieDuncan4424 September 2023
I wonder if this is a more realistic portrait of detective work than most shows? It got me curious and it made me want to find a book written by an actual real detective. But like written by detective and not a journalist or fiction author.

Anyway, this series displayed detectives as workers. People with jobs. That this detective work is a job. And like jobs they are subject to lots of pressures.

There's the grueling nine to five. But then there's office politics, pressure from co-workers, the boss, journalists, the families who are victims, and in this show, there's pressure from political sources as well.

This show is about fighting to be an honorable detective despite all the pressures to not be from the outside world.

It's really sad that they can't just do their job without all these evil people getting in their way.

Probably detectives in real life have many of these pressures. I think that this is one of the few shows that makes this apparent.

The plot is interesting for this series and the main characters, the protagonists are likable.

I thought it dragged a bit in season one towards the end. I think it could have ended after twelve episodes and didn't need sixteen episodes.

Great, but...
lbfr-1197814 March 2023
...the character of the reporter is just not the best, no depth. The actress needs more practice in drama, it often felt like there was no real acting in there. The expressions and the emotions are not believable. Let's see in season 2.

HOWEVER, Do-Chang's sister! What a class act!! A-mazing actress! And Do-Chang's character himself is a whole world of emotions, brilliant acting as well. He takes you on the journey along with Ji-Hyeok who is perfect as the tortured and smart detective. All the actors are excellent. The plot is very well woven. Highly recommend it.

Enjoyed every minute of it.

It Couldn't Have Been Better...
Chaokage6 February 2021
Throughout the whole series, you'll have this feeling that you are the same unchanging with every single episode. For some reason, this series failed to constantly draw me in with every episode. The pace felt very similar the whole series. As a matter of fact, this might be one of those series that you may mildly enjoy just because it doesn't stress you, excite you, make you feel joy or sadness or even anger you. This is one of those series that you'll watch to just take a breath before you start the next one. If I'm going to say one positive thing about this series, it would be how relaxed it made feel.

Solid Mystery that falls apart due to unexplicable reactions of female lead reporter
Comphunk18 November 2020
Everything is wonderful whodunit drama. There's great character development, the plot is Engaging. It's true korean style corrupt police prosecution story, quite similar in tone to Forest of Secrets. But the female lead just blows apart any logical human affection and rationale. How can she have split mind 99% of times as a reporter. You need to watch it to see how her character goes down to depths of complete humiliation of human behavior. Having emotions for killers is something unexplicable. Especially cold blooded murder and an innocent being executed If her character was kept more believable, I would have given it a 9. There's tonnes of comedy. But for me the female lead wrecks it apart by her completely unbelievable affection for the revealed killer

Tonally uneven and draggy
Glue2Screen13 February 2023
This series started off a bit uneven but laid a nice foundation of suspense and mystery to keep me interested. However, this didn't last long as I did wish there were more substance as the series started to become very draggy at the 9 episode mark. The mystery of the murder was mostly revealed at that point, and I was bit bored already with still 7 episodes to go. It would have been more impactful if they had additional mystery happening at the same time or just break the drama into two halves with two separate murder mysteries. When the show revealed all the players and relied on just trying to bounce blame between the characters, it can become really boring really fast.

The tone felt all over the place. It tried to very gritty and slowburn/dark, while wanting to be slightly more playful and stylish. I'm not saying you can't have opposing themes/tones as many movies/shows successfully capture any different themes at once (Hotel Del Luna with horror, comedy, grit). Good Detectives just didn't achieve to establish any theme fully. The show seem to scathe by being gritty but doesn't establish this long enough before trying to switch the tone. The opening credits, for example, really throws you off as it is very playful and has an Avenger feel but when the show starts it feels like something completely different--very uneven.

I quite enjoyed a lot of the meta references from Son Hyun-joo's character Kang De Chang. A few times he would be referring to himself like "typical detective on TV" and I felt that refreshing. His acting is pretty solid in this drama but he has always play this type of role well.

Overall, not the best but if you don't mind slow paced show with mystery with fillers, this might be for you.

The Incompetent Naive Detective
Park_Min20 February 2024
Regarding season 1, I liked the earlier episodes and I was looking forward to the upcoming ones but things didn't go as expected. They had a really poor mix of investigators and journalists/reporters working on the case. Not even the involved characters from that side were appealing to watch. You often hear in any police/investigation drama how they keep information away from journalists/reporters to not hinder the investigation, it turned out they were right. I liked how Oh Ji Hyuk didn't stand out as a main lead too much to allow those around him to have a space, he blended in nicely. Him and Do Chang had a nice dynamic but they started to drift apart a little bit later on. Moving on to season 2, the main case was definitely less interesting. The involved parties were boring. The investigation was slower and much simpler. There was barely any tension, not much action and thriller anymore. Most of the time they were slacking around. Less budget maybe? Throughout both season there was a very small side plot in the background regarding Oh Ji Hyuk and finding a meaning in living but the writer didn't allow for such development and, eventually, after 2 full seasons, everything boiled down that he found a meaning in life through being a workaholic detective. The way they handled that after 32 episodes was the most disappointing thing about the whole thing.

Superb on every front - it will be a classic for decades to come !
Objectivity15 November 2020
During the first lockdown this year I discovered the blockbuster Spanish series called LA CASA DE PAPEL and thought I would not find any better than that.

Well, Wow oh Wow - I have. This Korean series is the best series I have seen this year (2020), surpassing La Casa de Papel and Stranger.

It has everything at a very high level : sensitivity, suspense, acting depth, superb direction, critique of South Korean endemic deference to hierarchy and ensuing political and police corruption, sub-plots, the beauty of human beings, the failures of human beings, emotional conflicts, humour, team spirit, injustice, justice, and, throughout, how life is often simply not just Black and White.

All the while following an investigation into a murder for which a seemingly innocent man has been incarcerated.

The South Korean series STRANGER, which I also discovered this year, won all sorts of praise worldwide, deservedly, and scores 8.6 on IMDB.

This one, THE GOOD DETECTIVE, manages, for me, to be even better than STRANGER - that's saying something.

Superb, Superb, Superb !

Not bad, but doesn't particulary show Koreans in a good light
captain_astronaut25 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Nearly all the characters would prefer an innocent man be executed in order to preserve their own feelings. They could actually live with themselves after condemning someone to death for a crime they didn't commit?

How do our hero detectives not get that the bad detectives (who they know are bad) will continue to do bad things?

Why wouldn't news lady leak that footage proving the innocent guy was innocent the moment she received it?

How could super lawyer not have had an expert examine the footage of the innocent man, after making a big deal about the tampered footage from the guy they suspect? No one in their meetings said "Should we check our video too, so it's beyond reproach?"

Either all police stations in Korea use the same blueprints to build their departments, or all Korean cop shows use the same set with slight alterations.

Good drama!!!
vanminhpham16 November 2020
Overall, I think is a good drama. It is very entertaining with a good pace. The actors did a good job. Script is okay. However, I would hope they would spend more time on Oh Ji Hyuk story. On how his father was killed. Other than that, I really enjoy watching this drama.

Gripping until the 10 th episode
honeybloggs-6964811 April 2024
It really was amazing . It was excitjng, intriguing , suspenseful and realistic . Then after the episode it just dragged on and on .

It felt like.they were prolonging the series until it covered 16 episodes. It should have finished by by the 10th episode ( if not before )

. The female reporter Jin , was pushing boundaries . She was strong, persuasive, relentless, fearless and very ambitious , selfish and yet sensitive at times too . The character was played very badly by the actress. She actually made her character very boring and weak. She had a big part in the series . An actress who could act would have changed the whole dynamic of the show.

However the rest of the actors and actresses were fantastic !

This seriesshowed how unglamorous police work is. And that police officers are subject to corruption but that doesn't make them a bad person or a terrible cop. Corruption in the police force happens world wide and not just in South Korea.

They've been many cases whereby senior police officers in Scotland Yard, UK have been arrested for taking huge bribes for many years .

Team 1 police officers were very likeable characters . What I found confusing were all the names. The Korean names were very similar so hard to know which character people in the series were talking about . And in the translation they'd shorten the names or totally misspell the names which added to the confusion I googled the list of names , with pictures of the characters . And often the names translated were misspelt , giving the character a totally different first name or surname . I only recognised the character by their picture .

I'd love to know why wardrobe dressed Eui in ill fitting , diarrhoea coloured trousers throughout the whole series . In fact her jacket and sweatshirt were dire too . She was a teenager ,not an old hobo ! . When she went to live permanently with the detective and his sister , they could have put her in a pair of jeans and a decent sweat shirt or T shirt .

I read from one review on here that series 2 is better , so I'll give it a try by watching a few episodes . I love Korean crime and horror and have been watching it for years. It's much better than the rubbish Hollywood produces nowadays .

Two Exceptionally Principled Cops and One Exceptionally Weak and Compromised Reporter!
spasek5 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
What is the price of integrity? What is the price of doing the right thing as opposed to the easy thing? And what is the price of compromising one's integrity and doing the right thing? There have been a number of K-Dramas dealing with corruption. Some within the police force. Some within the prosecution. Some within the political annals, and several dealing with all three. "Stranger" is still the all-time best when it comes to dealing with corruption within the hierarchies of Korean judicial systems. "The Good Detective" is-for the most part-very solid with a few small issues here and there.

A senior detective who's been stuck in the same position for many years finds himself not following proper protocols when dealing with a murder suspect. That suspect is up for execution and Sergeant Kang Do Chang comes across some new evidence from some suspicious sources that prove that his suspect is likely innocent and was set up. Kang Do Chang has many years of experience under his belt, and he soon realizes the toll of doing the wrong thing can do to a person. We get the sense that this is his first major blunder, but it would soon cost him, and now he endeavors to do whatever it takes to set things right and also to vow never to go down that road again.

Lieutenant Oh Ji Hyuk is the newest member of Violent Crimes Team Two, and even though he's technically Kang Do Chang's superior, he takes the subordinate role for some reason. While Kang Do Chang is savvy, Oh Ji Hyuk is the smarter of the two. His skills at deductive reasoning help him see things that even his senior partner is unable to grasp. He's also got a tie to Kang Do Chang's case, as the principal suspect is actually his sadistic and wealthy cousin, Oh Jong Tae (played by Oh Jung Se). It's very hard for me to see actor Oh Jung Se as anyone other than his stellar performance of Moon Sang Tae from "It's Okay to Not Be Okay" which is one of the best acting performances I've ever seen.

The two detectives are principled and endeavor not to break the rules when it comes to bringing the truth to light. Little do they realize how stacked the corruption is against them, from prosecutors to superior police officers. To Civil Petition Division officers (Internal Affairs) and to the Ministry of Justice himself. Not to mention the press.

Speaking of the press, we have our third major character of the series, and easily my least favorite. Reporter Jin Seo Kyung is a selfish, immature, and weak person, who reaches for a bottle of alcohol more readily than she does her "mighty pen." A number of times, we see her stumble and refuse to do what's right. She compromises her own integrity because she's afraid and doesn't have the guts. She thinks little of anyone but herself and how a decision will impact her. In many ways, she's the antithesis of our two detectives. Once, she withholds key evidence that might help save innocent Lee Dae Chul. And then she refuses to share the murder confession of her boss to the police, which unwittingly gets him killed. Oh, she finally gets around to doing it, but not before it's too late. She's a miserable woman who can't see the forest for the trees. She easily discards the actions of her boss. She comes across as naïve, but she isn't. She knows what he's been up to and what he's doing and the abuse of power he's wielded as a prominent editor of a big-time newspaper. And yet, she does nothing. It's been said that too often the biggest problem in the fight against injustice is for good people to do nothing.

It's always been sickening to see how much disregard there is for human life, especially when they are pawns and victims being ground under wheels of corruption. Kang Do Chang admits his mistake but does his best to rectify the situation. Some of the most touching scenes in the series are between him and Lee Dae Chul's daughter, Lee Eun Hye. It takes a lot of courage to admit that you're partly responsible for what's happened to a young girl's father. It takes an even bigger person in Lee Eun Hye to forgive him and even thank him for trying to set things right.

As with many Korean dramas, the series is filled with suspense, touching moments, and outright humor. I'm not sure how a police officer could endure so much when they are trying to catch suspects and are-at the same time-fighting against the system they are a part of. How would an officer keep his sanity under such conditions?

I was glad to see several supporting characters realize their mistake and also try to find a way to redeem themselves, rather than simply being swept aside by the system. Yoon Sang Mi (Civil Petition Division) compromises her own integrity by lying in court in order to get a promotion. Kang Do Chang holds her in contempt and makes her face her own greed when he confronts her. Then we have Chief Moon who is also a part of the cover-up of the true crime. Fortunately, of all the characters to fall into the corruption pool, he does the most to try and set things right.

I'm not sure why Oh Ji Hyuk is held accountable for using his gun in the last episode. If there truly is a "rule" that prohibits an officer from using his weapon to save the life of another officer, then something is terribly wrong. I thought that wasn't just silly, but insulting and offensive. Oh Ji Hyuk literally saves Kang Do Chang's life. That was a stretch for me.

If it hadn't been for such a deplorable character in Jin Seo Kyung, this series would have been nearly perfect for me. Her character was cringe-worthy. I'm not sure why the writer chose to make the female characters so unlikeable. Kang Do Chang's sister drinks like a fish and snaps at him at every turn. I'd have kicked her out of the house. Her voice is even like nails on a chalkboard. I tend to prefer stronger female characters. They don't have to be impeccable or flawless, but at least make them likable.

Acting performances-for the most part-are all rock solid. Again, I still feel that the two best performances were from Son Hyun Joo (Kang Do Chang) and Jang Seung Jo (Oh Ji Hyuk). These two have that good "buddy cop" vibe that you want to see in these types of stories.

Overall, this is a good series. However, I think I'll wait a while before delving into Season 2, which I've already heard, isn't nearly as good.

Awful people
gresa-1903624 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I quit after the execution. Almost every character was a horrible person in this show. Even then I would have given it a chance but the justification just seemed laughable to me. They make it out to be as selfishness when it's just being an awful person. You can be selfish and still be a good person. But you can't be a good person when that selfishness (for not losing your job/promotion) causes the loss of someone life. Especially when you're well aware of that. "You can be like that (not selfish) but you can't judge us for being selfish". One of them said this basically. Are you kidding me? Of course everyone can judge you. Because multiple people thought like this, someone lost his life and someone had to live as a "murderer' daughter" for 5 years. I just couldn't watch it anymore as these people didn't even feel guilty or had any repercussions. I have seen series with awful people. But there at least the majority doesn't condone it.

Even the girl reporter who seemed a good person, when she could've saved an innocent man's life, she didn't. There was so much wrong in this in series and so much blame to pass around but nobody even acknowledged it. "Only the culprit is at fault". What kind of nonsense is this. All the people who contributed in some way in his execution (and didn't try to fix it) are to blame. BECAUSE IT WAS THEIR FREAKING JOB! Their job is to literally find the real culprit. And if in the process you've witnessed something that wasn't right, it's YOUR job to at least tell the truth about it. ESPECIALLY if someone's life is on the line. But no. They chose not to because their career was more important than a man's life. That isn't just being selfish anymore. That's being a horrible person.

In conclusion; hated most of the people, hated the justification, hated the lesson of "you can be selfish, even if an innocent life is at stake. It doesn't make you a horrible person", hated the lesson "only the culprit is to blame. Even if you contributed to turning an innocent person's life upside down and didn't try to mend that mistake when you had that opportunity". Hated so much in this series. It's not even funny.

The other Kdrama - can totally recommend
lilou-clark19 April 2021
I love Korean dramas but sometimes you get the feeling that the plot is a bit over the top.

In my opinion, this story could happen this way. There were no blatant fighting scenes where one person made 20 others harmless, the corruption was not excessive and it was not a triangular relationship (boy 2 wants girl 1, but girl 1 wants boy 1 who in turn wants girl 2). It has action, family, a little love and friendship. The only thing I think is a shame is that investigator Kang takes all the laurels and presents himself as if he would never give up until he has the true criminal. But it was actually Lieutenant Oh who investigated the matter at the beginning and it was also him who continued to investigate after his cousin's conviction. There is also a pale aftertaste when investigator Kang is ready to make the same mistake, just to get Jong Tae behind bars.

I have nothing to say about the story. In relation to the acting and the other elements I do have something to say. One of the things that stood out to me was(SPOILER) after the fight between JiHyouk and JongTae non of them had scratches or seemed to be bothered (super unrealistic). Still a pretty darn good drama

Awesome 2 seasons
smclaughlin-309102 January 2023
Hi everyone, I just finished the second season and loved it. I really liked the characters and I found it quite entertaining. I binged watched the last 4 episodes today. Such a great way to start 2023 off.

I could watch both seasons again.

This show had all the things you want from a show. I love the clothes on the rich people.

But I love the way everyone looks after the elderly. Too bad that's not the way they are nowadays. At least that's not the way in this country.

I would love to visit and meet some Korean actors. They make the food look so good too.

Hopefully the third season is started soon.

Can't wait for season 3!

WORTH IT!
vongocanhthu-0954311 April 2021
I have spent only 2 full days to watch this drama, I could say 2 full days are totally worthy. The actings of all casts (even supporting roles) are splendid and fascinating. Even though the whole drama focuses on few interconnected cases that are governed around the severe corruption, evidences that are found and linked to the real culprits are convincing and not too overwhelming (with which I meant "haunting"). Above all, the drama highlights the brightness of the ultimate righteousness that the truths will always win and the wrongness will always be revealed sooner or later, and furthermore addresses on the beauty of polices and their brotherhood vividly and meaningfully.
