Medically accurate storylines about abortion can help educate and inform viewers “across all political leanings,” according to a new study from USC Annenberg’s Norman Lear Center and Uc San Francisco’s Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health program.
In their paper “Abortion Depictions on Television: Impact on Audience Knowledge and Mobilization,” researchers surveyed 1,016 adult television viewers of three television episodes with depictions of the procedure that were deemed to be medically sound. The viewers of these storylines were tested for their knowledge of abortion and their interest in taking action after watching the 2022 A Million Little Things episode “Fresh Start,” the 2022 Better Things episode “No, I’m Not Gonna Tell Her” or the 2022 Station 19 episode “The Little Things You Do Together.”
Viewers who were casual, even occasional watchers of the series and did not recall the specific abortion episodes in question were surveyed alongside those who did remember the content of the specific storylines.

Mimoun and Rogers will executive produce the series alongside Rogers’ brother, Robbie Rogers, with whom she worked on “Fellow Travelers” and who has served as a producer on “All American” and an EP on “All American: Homecoming.

Julie Plec, co-creator of the hit supernatural drama “The Vampire Diaries,” has hinted at the possibility of a new series in the franchise. During a promotional event for her new Max series “The Girls on The Bus,” Plec shared her enthusiasm for expanding the “Vampire Diaries” universe.
“I have a story I still want to tell,” Plec told Screen Rant. “I know that the people who are on the book have a story that they still want to tell. I’m sure Warner Bros. has plenty of stories they want to tell. So, the hope is they’ll give me the opportunity to do it again. We’ll see.”
While no specific details were provided about the potential new series, Plec suggested that L. J. Smith’s original novels could serve as inspiration. The franchise, which began with “The Vampire Diaries” in 2009, has already spawned two successful spin-offs: “The Originals” and “Legacies.

Griffin Dunne’s family has done so many larger-than-life, unbelievable things that when the actor-director-producer started to write his memoir “The Friday Afternoon Club: A Memoir of Family,” he realized it wasn’t enough to start the story with his complex writer father Dominick Dunne.
In fact, it was impossible to understand the forces that shaped the Dunnes, including his uncle John Gregory Dunne and sister Dominique Dunne — without understanding his father’s abusive upbringing in an Irish Catholic family, his mother’s Mexican heritage and all great love stories, clandestine affairs, celebrity encounters and tragedies that seem to surround them, buffeted with lots of pitch-black mordant humor.
The heart of the new memoir is the 1982 murder of Griffin Dunne’s younger sister, “Poltergeist” star Dominique Dunne. It’s the first time he’s really grappled with telling the story of that pivotal event in his family’s history. The...

As TV academy voters fill out their 2024 Emmy nominations ballots, they will have to consider 107 shows for Best Drama Series. This is down by 56 contenders compared to last year. As was the case in 2023, members may not allow their selections to exceed the number of eventual nominations for a given award, which, in this case, will be eight.
2023 Best Drama Series winner “Succession” and six of the seven also-rans are out of the current race because they did not air new episodes during the June 1, 2023 to May 31, 2024 qualifying period. This leaves “The Crown” as the only 2023 nominee eligible for an immediate return, which could lead to its second victory here following its first in 2021.
Remember, only eight of the shows below will earn bids for Best Drama Series when the Emmy nominations are announced on July 17. Which do you think will make the cut?

On a brisk April afternoon in the East Village, Griffin Dunne steps through a portal to his past. He has hustled up the stairs of an East Village tenement too old for elevators despite its gentrified gleam. The hallways are narrow but clean and the doors look modern, new — until we arrive at the apartment we’re seeking. Layers of chipped paint speak of the passage of decades. The threshold is uneven — an entry to an era of slanting wooden floors, fire escape patios and bathrooms the size of closets. Inside, hats of fantastic shapes and sizes dot the blue walls, and everywhere there are books and flyers about Blondie, the Pyramid Club, Candy Darling, David Wojnarowicz, etc. Here is the habitat of a performance artist, impeccably preserved for decades and in fact still very much in use.

When Mike Flanagan first spoke to Carla Gugino about his latest Netflix production, The Fall of the House of Usher, he didn’t yet know what it would be beyond something inspired by the work of Edgar Allan Poe. “It was going to be something around a family and elements of Succession,” recalls Gugino. Having worked with Flanagan on several horror projects (Gerald’s Game, The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor and Midnight Mass), Gugino was confident that the writer-director would find the perfect thematic material for our present moment. “It’s extremely appropriate, destroying yourself by not opening yourself up to actually seeing your effect on the world,” says the actress of the Sackler family-inspired narrative, which turns the Ushers of Poe’s 1840 short story into an elite clan who earned their riches from the opioid crisis. “His humanistic take on the genre,” Gugino says of Flanagan,...

Now, Chyler has revealed that she would love to reunite with Melissa on her newest series, The Way Home. She even has a great idea about how her Supergirl sister could join the popular time travel show, which has been renewed for season 3.

Welcome to My Favorite Scene! In this series, IndieWire speaks to actors behind a few of our favorite television performances about their personal-best onscreen moment and how it came together.
Editor’s note: The following interview contains spoilers for Netflix’s “The Fall of the House of Usher.”
Much like her character in Netflix’s “The Fall of the House of Usher,” Carla Gugino is an actor who feels like she’s everywhere.
From her film work in “Gerald’s Game,” “Spy Kids,” “Watchmen,” and more, to TV roles dating back to “Saved by the Bell” through “Entourage” and as recent as “The Girls on the Bus” on Max (I had to spare a few moments of our interview to bring up Greg Berlanti’s “Political Animals”), Gugino feels as powerful, versatile, and ubiquitous as Verna, the shape-shifting devil puppeteering the eponymous fall.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Girls on the Bus Season 1 Finale, “Isaac’s Wedding.”] The Girls on the Bus has come to its Season 1 end, and with it came plenty of fuel for a second season. While there’s not currently an order for another chapter, the stars opened up to us about their hopes for a Season 2 and whether or not they think there’s more story to tell. As viewers will recall, Hayden Wells Garrett (Scott Foley) was exposed as a planted nominee fronting the agenda of a crooked billionaire. And after acquiring damning evidence from a whistleblower, Sadie McCarthy (Melissa Benoist) was sought out by authorities, but with the help of her reporter cohorts, they were able to get away with their covert reporting and investigation, with plans to explore the story further following Garrett’s nomination as a primary candidate in the forthcoming presidential election. “I think part of what...

In the Season 1 finale of Max’s “Girls on the Bus,” Sadie (Melissa Benoist) has a tense conversation with Governor Walker (Hettienne Park) that had been building all season. And that’s hardly all.
Walker is a pretty obvious stand-in for Hillary Clinton in the show’s version of a Democratic presidential primary. In Episode 10, written by co-creator Amy Chozick, Walker has just learned that, despite being the most experienced and likely best person for the job, she was going to fall short of getting the necessary delegates to clench the nomination for president. Political journo Sadie comes to speak to Gov. Walker while she’s drowning her sorrows on a campaign bus, and apologizes for how her coverage of her has hurt her over the years — but also lay out her own frustrations about the enigma that is the governor.

Eric Schultz knows his way around politics. The Washington, D.C. consultant served as deputy White House press secretary during the Obama Administration from 2014-2017. He’s also worked for Sen. Charles Schumer and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee
But in the last few years, he’s been getting very familiar with Hollywood, consulting for shows like “Succession” and most recently Alex Garland’s A24 drama “Civil War.”
But now, he’s going in front of the camera. Schultz makes his acting debut with a cameo on Thursday’s season finale of Max’s “The Girls on the Bus.” He plays a press aide who Sadie McCarthy (Melissa Benoist) must convince to let her into a VIP cocktail party at the Democratic National Convention.
“They reached out of the blue and asked me, ‘Would you like to make a cameo?’” Schultz tells me. “It took me probably a nanosecond to say yes.

When prolific director DeMane Davis stepped in to direct the seventh episode of the Max series “The Girls on the Bus,” she was immediately given a challenge.
“The show reminds me of old movies from the 1970s that I loved growing up. It’s a very funny show and so fast-paced that it just crackles,” Davis tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “But I was told my episode was the most dramatic of all the episodes that had come before. People were like, ‘Sorry it’s not as funny.’ And I was like, ‘No, that’s okay. I can do that.’ Because I love being in that vein. And so what I did is, in the funny moments, I leaned into them a little bit more than I would normally – just to kind of give relief and to help the ride of the story. But I was honored...

Carla Gugino has been tapped to play Hollywood screen legend Vivien Leigh in the forthcoming biopic “The Florist.”
The film is directed by Nick Sandow (star of “Orange is the New Black”) and will explore Leigh’s struggle with bipolar disorder in the 1960s, as she prepares to lead the Broadway production of John Gielgud’s Chekhov adaptation of “Ivanov.” Screenwriter Jayce Bartok (“The Cake Eaters”) put the script together based on a box of love letters.
Leigh earned her place in cinema history as Scarlett O’Hara, the central character in 1939’s “Gone With the Wind,” opposite Clark Gable. Leigh also played the landmark role of Blanche DuBois opposite Marlon Brando in 1951’s “A Streetcar Named Desire.”
“I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to excavate a woman as complex, contradictory, and compelling as Vivien. From the moment I read the script, I knew ‘The Florist’ was a journey I had to pursue,...

Greg Berlanti and Netflix are going for a ride in the Mystery Machine.
The streaming giant is near a deal for a live-action TV series based on the beloved Hanna-Barbera animated cartoon Scooby-Doo. The project has a script-to-series commitment at Netflix, meaning if the script is well received, it would trigger a straight-to-series order for what is considered a live-action update of the classic cartoon.
Reps for Netflix, producers Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions declined to comment, as a deal has not yet formally closed.
Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg — who previously adapted Cowboy Bebop for Netflix and High Fidelity for Hulu — are attached to pen the script and exec produce via their Midnight Radio banner’s André Nemec and Jeff Pinkner. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Girls on the Bus Season 1, Episode 8, “Life is a Highway.”] The Girls on the Bus has tackled a number of topical subjects over its run so far on Max, but none more frustrating than journalist Sadie’s (Melissa Benoist) quest to secure abortion pills in the episode, “Life is a Highway.” After discovering she’d become pregnant after a spontaneous hook-up with an on-again-off-again fling, Malcolm, a.k.a. Loafers (Brandon Scott), Sadie’s clock for an abortion began ticking as she opted to go with pills. The trouble with that? She is constantly traveling through different states where laws differ. Due to this metaphorical roadblock, Sadie was forced to cross state lines with the help of conservative reporter Kimberlyn (Christina Elmore) as she went to pick up the mailed pills in a P.O. Box. The only problem? She didn’t make it to the post office in time,...

Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers for “Life Is a Highway,” the eighth episode of “The Girls on the Bus” Season 1, now streaming on Max.
When Rina Mimoun first produced an episode of television about abortion, she had no idea she’d be doing the same thing more than two decades later. “The Girls on the Bus” showrunner, who worked with Greg Berlanti on the “very special episode” of “Everwood” about women’s rights in 2001, did just that with the eighth episode of the Max series, which debuted on Thursday.
The episode picked up right where they last left off: Sadie (Melissa Benoist) ordered abortion pills to be delivered to her California hotel while on the campaign trail; when they didn’t arrive in time, she was stuck, as the next state on the trip was Missouri — where abortion is illegal. After telling the other women about her dilemma in...

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains light spoilers for Episode 8 of “The Girls on the Bus.”]
On the April 25 episode of Max’s “The Girls on the Bus,” Sadie (Melissa Benoist) had an abortion.
The matter-of-fact decision for the young reporter is only (“only!”) complicated by the all-too-real problem of Sadie’s political journo travel schedule, and the differing rules of which U.S. state she is in when and how to legally ship the needed pills to the correct location.
“It has to be specific, because I was like, ‘They’re not [campaigning in] a Democratic primary in a deep red state,'” co-creator Amy Chozick, whose reporting memoir upon which the show is based, explained about the logistics. “Then, of course, the rules were changing. We literally had a map of the U.S. in the writers room like, ‘Ok, they could be realistically campaigning in Missouri, and it is still legal in Illinois,’ so we were actually moving pieces of...

Ready to make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Drama Supporting Actress? Before you do, take a look through our photo gallery featuring the likeliest contenders. Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”) being the only 2023 nominee eligible to return puts her in the frontrunner position and leaves the remaining slots open to a bevy of formidable newcomers and past hopefuls.
This year’s supporting actress candidates will not have to fend off reigning champ Jennifer Coolidge of “The White Lotus,” which is set to return in 2025 with an almost completely fresh cast. All nine acting nominees from the show’s most recent season are presumably finished playing their roles, as are 2023 featured female competitors Rhea Seehorn and J. Smith-Cameron from the concluded series “Better Call Saul” and “Succession.”

As you prep your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Drama Actress, make sure you check out our photo gallery showcasing the likeliest contenders. None of last year’s half dozen nominees – including winner Sarah Snook (“Succession”) – are eligible this time, leaving plenty of slots open for both newcomers and past hopefuls.
All of Snook’s 2023 challengers differ from her in that their shows are still in production (albeit delayed until at least late 2024). They are Sharon Horgan (“Bad Sisters”), Melanie Lynskey (“Yellowjackets”), Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), and Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”).
With all of those actresses out of the running, the current race leaders are Anna Sawai (“Shōgun”) and Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), the latter of whom was recognized for the same series in 2020 and won Best Comedy Actress for “Friends” in 2002. Before making your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Drama Series, take a tour of our photo gallery showcasing the leading contenders. Currently at the top of the heap is the new FX program “Shōgun,” which is poised to fill the void left by reigning champ “Succession,” which signed off for good last May.
Of the eight shows that competed for this prize in 2023, only “The Crown” can do so this year. “Better Call Saul” joins “Succession” in having concluded during the 75th Emmys eligibility window, while ongoing series “Andor,” “House of the Dragon,” “The Last of Us,” “The White Lotus,” and “Yellowjackets” did not return in time to qualify for the 76th annual honors.
“The Crown” is indeed the lone past nominee in the mix at all, although the list of hopefuls includes a reboot of 1990s nominee “Quantum Leap” and two spin-offs of 1960s contender “Star Trek,” subtitled “Strange New Worlds” and “Discovery.
