Better then some other shows of the same genre.
tsmith4178 November 2008
I agree that the people who come to the open house concentrate too much on the furnishings and not on the home's structure, but I have a theory about that.

This is, after all, a show about designing, not how to re-roof a house and update electrical systems. I have a feeling that the people coming into the house are not real buyers anyway, that the producers pull people off the street and say, "How would you like to help us with this TV show? We'd like you to go inside and tell us how much you hate the color on the walls and how ugly the couch and bedspread are and how dirty the bathroom is. Don't mention anything about how the floorplan doesn't work or that the foundation is crumbling or how the house is located in a bad neighborhood or that it's overpriced and that's why it isn't selling. And oh yeah, we need you to come back in a couple of days and tell us how much better it looks." The good part of the show is that Roger makes mostly easy, inexpensive cosmetic changes, painting, hanging new curtains, and moving furniture around, and doesn't go into all kinds of major reconstruction the way HGTV's "Designed to Sell" does.

The bad part is that, as I said, the people coming in are not real buyers and then they have the same people come back again; I would prefer to have different people make the tour the second time around.

Overall it's not a bad show. If you're going to be selling your house soon, you can pick up a few good pointers that anyone can do without spending tons o' bucks. Even if you're not selling your home you can get some easy design ideas to spruce up your own abode.

I love this show... But,
viciousfishes0527 March 2020
While I do love this show... The people they get to critique the homes are so stupid it's beyond irritating... Endless comments about furniture (they don't like the color or style or the way it's arranged, etc) or the way the homeowners choose to use the room, etc. Are these people so unbelievably stupid they don't realize that the homeowners will be taking all their belongings with them when they move?

Good ideas and common sense
coco-12123 June 2007
I agree that the potential buyers (?) are terribly shallow (as are the guys who watch the show just to see Tanya), but the point that the show's producers are trying to make is that people buy with their emotions. I just bought a new house, after looking at several dozen, and first impressions make a big impact. If I walked into a house that was dark, in disrepair, cluttered and dirty, I rarely wanted to look any further. If I got a creepy feeling upon entering the house, that feeling usually intensified as the tour continued. Clean floors and walls, open space and light all made a good impression. I don't always agree with some of the colors Roger picks, but I cannot deny that the rooms look much more appealing after he does his work. Tanya's contribution as eye candy for the fellas apparently works. The value of the show is what you learn about playing your audience when selling your home. People don't want to see YOUR things; they want to imagine themselves living in the house. Roger makes that happen by getting rid of distractions and showcasing the selling points. He's got a gift.

One of the few reality shows worth watching because...
MarieGabrielle21 July 2006
It is honest and practical, especially if you need to prepare a house for the real estate market.

I actually think most reality TV is trash, because it is about degrading people, humiliating people, and has no redeeming values.

"Sell This House" is the opposite. While sometimes potential buyers may be overly critical, keep in mind that home buyers today are indeed very picky, so it helps to watch a show like this, and learn something useful. (Unlike "The Apprentice") or other staged bits of narcissism we see on TV today.

Tanya Memme and Roger Hazard have a nice chemistry, and good sense of humor as they help people clear out their houses, paint, de-clutter, and get top dollar for their property.

This show is helpful for the audience, and is not your typical "trash for cash" reality TV. Highly recommended. 10/10.

A good show with annoying house shoppers...
Voivod66611 June 2005
OK, I'm a guy and one of the main reason I watch this show is Tanya Memme who is absolutely stunning. But aside from that the show is full of good ideas not to sell your own home but even just to make your house look a little better. As mentioned in another users comments the one drawback are the house shoppers caught on their hidden cameras. I don't know if they're hired plants or if they specifically go looking for anal people who like to complain a lot (A LOT!) They bitch about things that are so irrelevant you almost have to believe they're scripted. Why bother putting down other people's furnishings? You're going to be bringing your OWN in, aren't you? And the tiniest, pickiest details, I just saw one man while looking at a $500,000 house complaining that the DOORKNOBS in ONE room were outdated... outdated doorknobs?! Do doorknobs even get outdated? Come on, you're spending half a million dollars for a house, what's $50 - $100 for new knobs for goodness sake. But as long as Tanya Memme graces the screen with her adorable face, I'll be watching the show :)

For Real???
RedQueenIMDB18 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I've learned a few good tips from this show. I love the low budgets of the featured projects. Not many selling secrets are spelled out, but the designer Roger Hazard is phenomenal at interior flipping. Cheap!

I was however, Googling info on the potential buyer hidden camera comments, because they revel in ripping on every detail of the home owners' decor in a most insulting way. And since they never look at the architecture - only the homeowner's decor - they have to be instructed to ridicule interiors. And then to praise Roger's re-arrangements on the after viewings too.

So I'd rather just get instruction videos from the designer, with more how-to tips spelled out rather than just showing off without divulging the secrets.

You've got to love Tanya!
Bronco4623 May 2006
I have this show set up on my DVR to make sure I catch all the shows. Tanya is the key to the shows appeal. While she is unbelievably attractive, she's also a very down to earth beauty who seems to really enjoy working on the houses featured on this show. She really gets involved in the work and her input through out the project really make the show a lot of fun. Tanya and her designer co-host Roger spend very small sums of money helping people who have been trying to sell their houses for reasons that aren't cleat to them. Roger and Tanya play hidden camera's around the house and collect people's opinions and use these to help plan what they have to do to the house. One of the amazing things we learn about people who look at houses is they look at almost everything in the houses but the house itself. That part can be very annoying. I find myself yelling at the screen your not buying the couch you idiot. Roger calls the shots on what needs to be done to house to make people see the house not the furnishings. He's very good at what he does They use a day and a half and usually spend less then $500 and frequently get the home owner an offer before the end of the show. This is a very clever idea for a home improvement type show, and really is an eye opener to any who might be selling a house in the future. Keep up the good work TANYA!

worst/best show in the entire genre
meemao629 April 2023
Me and my partner found this show cuz we got antenna tv for fun. It is actually the worst show I have seen in this genre and the ppl always say something like wow it's so spacious in here like yea that's bc they took out half the furniture.

With it being the worst house flipping show ever it has actually made it my FAVORITE bc I find so much entertainment in talking about the before and afters. Bc its bad. But I actually genuinely look forward to watching it when it comes on and watch it all the way through without interruptions and that's a first for me bc I have adhd. Honestly... 7/10 stars.

Sell This House is Worth Watching. Here's why:
sbowden4816 January 2010
This is an interesting show. First, we have all seen 'blah' homes that hold no interest to visitors...or for that matter, buyers. Plus we all have rooms in our house that need paint...but you have no idea what colour to paint it. This show will help you with this sort of problem

Also it introduces home owners to the problem of home buyers. If they see a huge closet, they don't think "Great that's a big closet." If the big closet is filled with stuff, they think "there's not enough closet space".

Roger Hazard is a good designer, despite his disturbing penchant for giant phallic table centrepieces, a clearly obsessive trait. The host of the show is Tanya Memme, also known as Her Extreme Hotness. She seems to be one of the few hosts of these shows that actually rolls up her sleeves and does something, like paint and clean. Mosts hosts are just talking heads that don't talk particularly well. Also I enjoy the fact that the show is refreshingly free of the disturbing presence of lions. The show will give you ideas for use of colour in your home that look great, colours used in a way you may not have thought of on your own. That's the best part of the show. Ugly or blah places are transformed.

Also important is that is introduces the problem of 'crazy buyers'. Buyers should look for tell-tale structural faults (like cracks in the corners where walls and ceilings meet). Instead they walk into a normal- sized living room with HUGE furniture and say 'gosh there's not a lot of room in here'. Home Buyers are insane, and you have to take that into account when you are trying to sell your home.

One problem: the show does all this work on this house in ORDER TO SELL IT. But too often they end the show by saying "The owners are expecting an offer any day now". I think they need to do some follow-up instead, and say 'this home sold 4 weeks after our work!'

Fake or not ,it's entertaining with cool "staging" ideas
blizzy-5509124 October 2021
I just had to respond to a previous remark , I guess because I have seen tons of episodes I can say with 100 % certainty that Tanya has not said in every single episode that "they are expecting an offer an day" ! Although she says it alot, they have on occasion SOLD the house, lol...so quit hatin!!!!

Bed sheets used for everything
silvergirl196024 January 2021
This is about the most lame decorating show ever to exist and it brings the whole network into question for me. What is the red-haired guy's qualifications? Does he pay to be on that show? Or is he the network's owner's son or something? He's as good a decorator as your average college student, repeatedly using "decorative" sheets for curtains and couch-covers. Tanya has to carry the show, and even as cute as she is, she can't make it compelling.

Constructive ideas, I hope!
hbrenda-8739412 February 2020
I love this show, despite taking it with a grain of salt. Everybody has said it...but it is true people cannot see a house for the clutter, etc. The open house people might be actors/plants. BUT....I think this show inspires people to raise their homes to a new level. I personally have been on a home improvement kick inspired by this. Advice for improvement....Stop painting around plug-in and light switch plates. It makes it look unprofessional and would ruin the idea that somebody took care of this house...Maybe put that in an episode! And yes, maybe throw in some advice about inspecting....maybe a special episode? Or better yet, how about a show from the buyers' point of view? Including that inspection? If you make money on that, send me my cut!

Tanya is a good host but Roger is egoistic
ginaworld-1728216 April 2023
I don't like the way Roger orders the owners around and the host.

He has no professionalism and reminds me of rude office politics. He makes me cringe every time he starts giving directions. There are better ways to communicate.

Some of the other reviewers are right, he's obnoxious, rude and lazy. Really need a better design and staging "expert" who will be better at communicating effectively with both the home owners and the host. Sometimes they seem destroy the unique features of the house by painting everything white.

Would watch this show with a better designer and assistance to the host Tanya.

Terrible, terrible show
serenity-699178 March 2022
First off, Roger IS NEITHER A DESIGNER NOR A DECORATOR!! At best, he "might" be a stager. It really irritates me when he paints brick or over wallpaper. He sprouts off stuff that is just not true. Dark colors DO make a room seem smaller despite what Roger says. So much of what he does seems unethical. Place a rug over dirty, stained carpet. Paint over dirty wallpaper. He isn't even that good a stager. Take a metal trash can and turn it into a table. He picks garish paint colors for walls. And I could go on! The worst was last night the homeowner had a large mirror over the bathroom vanity. He took a small, framed mirror and glued it to the center of the large mirror!!!???

And before anyone asks, yes, I am a trained, educated, licensed Interior Designer.

Most of these homes just need to be decluttered and cleaned.

Love the show and Tanya ... can't stand Roger!
evyw6413 February 2014
I love watching this show despite the inane comments by looky-loos (they aren't buying the furniture, for goodness sake! Although I do understand that first impressions matter and they see the furniture first) and Roger Hazard. He's so lazy! He has Tanya do everything while he leaves! When he does have to do some work, he gets testy with Tanya! What a jerk! I'm glad he's gone, but the new show, Buy This House Extreme, isn't helpful for people like me that aren't going to make big renovations to their house; we just want design ideas. And I can't tell you how stupid I thought the show was the boxes set up as furniture was! If you don't have much money, go to Goodwill or Salvation Army or Craigslist and get a slipcover or paint the furniture! Jeez.

Sell my house!!
terekb24 February 2007
I love to watch your show. You have such wonderful ideas, and we have tried them while trying to sell our house. However we have been unsuccessful in selling our house in a small town in Wisconsin. We would like to invite you and your show to come out and tell us how we can stage our house to sell it. We would work very hard at painting or whatever else you would suggest. Your show has done such wonderful things with very unique houses, and I think our house definitely fits under the title of unique. The bi-level house has a "rock wall" going down to the second level. However the kitchen has a great view of the yard and the sliding doors lead you out to a great deck!!

Fun To Watch
sumner-1148024 July 2021
I love watching the reruns of this old reality show. Considering that the sellers are desperate to get their house sold, I think things get done promptly with few dollars invested. Roger Hazard is honest about the flaws of the house & stages & paints the house in record time. Tanya is gorgeous, of course, & plays up the "notion" that Roger is lazy. It's just part of the focus of the show & offers comic relief for the time crunch of getting the house ready in record time. I find it hard to believe that some home owners don't even pick up clutter & dirt clothes to get ready for a showing. Like dirty dishes in the sink when potential buyers walk through? Who is that stupid? Has to be staged. Some of Roger's changes are a little odd, but viewers don't have to like everything he does. I find this show entertaining. It's not meant to be tutorial for every home selling situation.

Tanya is what makes the show worth it!
andrewpalustre21 February 2021
Funny thing is I discovered this show while doing cardio at the gym! It was playing in the overhead tv and while it seemed like your generic house hunting/selling program, Tanya (the host) caught my attention right away. Boy when I say she's a piece of eye candy, believe me <3!! I'm sure the program can be intriguing as well but let's be honest about the real reason we watch it! ;)

Curious....
heatherlynn-366903 April 2022
Do the home owners pay for all the home renovations and repairs? I say this because there was a family trying to put their two daughters through college and both the man and woman said thy can't afford to unless the woman got a job to go with the job she all ready has. If she has to sell her house but it's not selling at all, then how would they be able to afford to pay for the renovations and remodeling? If anyone can answer this please message me. I am very curious. Thank you.

What's wrong with antiques
kathypatterson-2412119 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This show tries to make "grandma" an insult. In one show they even made the homeowner refinish an antique occasional table and paint it silver. She was almost in tears. Nothing wrong with being a grandmother or liking antiques.

Really great transformations and funny crew!
holiholieuropasuperhero4 September 2023
I love this show. I don't know why it's has a C rating it deserves an A plus. The transformations of the houses are always fun and new and much better! I love the creativity and the resourcefulness of the new designs for the houses. The show shows that some simple redecorating and easy fixes and some new rethinking of how furniture is displayed can completely freshen up a place. They do amazing on this show and Roger is very talented. The rest of the crew is fun and talented too. I love this show and I truly think that each home they help sell looks amazing! One of my favorite shows. Great work! It's so satisfying to see people's home come alive with a new vision and some I expensive changes. It doesn't have to be expensive to live beautiful.

Terrible re-dos,
billiestuff24 August 2021
Terrible re-dos, Roger has terrible design tastes. Not the best choices in general in anything. Every now and then I give it a another chance, but it doesn't get better at all- . I watch almost all the home shows on TV and this is the worst ! I was sitting doing something so I left it on, the show was about trying to sell a church turned to a house. It was worse after Roger redid stuff.- colors were horrible, This has been my thoughts for years watching any show Roger has been in. On this particular show a chair cushion was recovered in fabric put together on the bottom using wide dark tape to hold together its very roughly wrapped fabric instead of staples or sewing. Enough said ?

painting
gottaluvthesun1 October 2020
This show is ridiculous. Just watched for first time and saw the painting. They are painting around electric switchplates and the kitchen cabinet doors. Didn't take anything off, just painting around them. If you are a first time painter don't follow these people who have no idea what they're doing. Check with a professional or family member who has painted before.

Worse design show ever
chiluvr122813 September 2020
I'm shocked at the high rating given this show on IMDB because if a worse home decorating show has been on the air, I have been fortunate enough not to see it. I've never seen it mentioned that the home sellers are on a very tight budget but apparently they are as everything is done as cheaply as possible.

I would love to know if Roger actually has any interior design credentials because he has very little taste. He loves to use sheets as tablecloths and as window treatments. I have seen him paint rooms in colors that are shocking like lime green and deep blue. His reasoning for painting a smallish room deep blue was to make the white trim "pop". Good grief.

The prospective buyers make rude comments about things that have nothing do with the actual house and the buyers seem pretty stupid not to realize a bedroom painted a dark red isn't going to win over any buyers; or that clutter all over the house is a no-no as is too much furniture crammed into a small room.

The Worst Designer Ever
weeziemcmillan13 September 2020
Roger is one lazy Designer. His ideas are the worst I have ever seen. He doesn't play attention to detail. He's so cheap, cheap cheap! Instead of a sheet for a table cloth. Why don't he just buy a table cloth? If you are going to place flowers in a vase at least trim the bottom of the flowers to look nice in the vase. This guy just stick the flowers in a vase and calls it a day. Let's not talk about the pillows on the sofa. My God. I remember this show being on before it's beyond me that it lasted as long as it did and the Host Tanya, why does she always act like she's afraid to show these people the tape of potential buyers looking at their dated, dirty, cluttered homes. This design show was a joke. Roger Harzard was a Harzard. His designing effort was the worst ever. Just Horrible choices... Thoughtless.
