Shiver me timbers, Jeremy Sisto has tits! (spoilers)
vertigo_1413 July 2004
Warning: Spoilers
Don't expect much more than a few amusing laughs from this sorry movie. What may at first seem like an American version of 'Dead Calm,' turns out to be something trying to develop into a psychological thriller. But it doesn't take anything important that was meant to at least put you on edge (if not eerily suspicious of most of the characters in that psychological thriller sense).

The story is that of five obnoxious members aboard a yacht for the afternoon. Viggo Mortensen steps out of his frequented tender roles to play a pretty sleazy, filthy rich defense lawyer, as well as the self-appointed captain of the weekend tour. We start out with some reservations about the characters, wondering what each of them has to offer, which is natural in a thriller context. You're presented a front with these characters, which is gradually supposed to break down and tease you for awhile, before revealing the real nature of each. Only, one half hour into the movie, and pretty much all we're given is that the people aboard the boat don't really like Bill (Donal Logue), the red-headed writer and weren't expecting him to come along. Other than that, we just a flurry of meaningless conversation and some dumb jokes. And it just goes on and on like that.

Somewhere along the line, Bill notices a boat is ablaze on the horizon and two members of the crew are flagging them down for help. We know how much of a jerk Phil is, because he doesn't want anything to do with the two helpless survivors stranded aboard the boat, preferring instead to let the coast guard take care of it. But the rest of the crew can't seem to understand what Phil's problem is and encourage the two strangers aboard and offer help.

Posing as stranded immigrants Timothy Grant (Sisto) and Laura (Camella Marquez), they soon reveal themselves to be quite a scheming pair, and hold the crew hostage at gun point. And Timothy, a bisexual transvestite is very on edge and has some plan to meet his boyfriend out in the middle of the ocean--for what I don't exactly know. The whole plan seems stupid, and well, Grant isn't exactly a guy who has it all together anyways. This part of the story is like an aquatic version of 'Dog Day Afternoon' only it isn't funny at all. It's just stupid.

Not to mention the fact that as things flare up among the group with Bill being more sympathetic of Tim and Laura and us being more intolerant of the rest of the crew, especially that asshole Phil. But no one seems to take anything seriously. It is more like, Bill, Tim, and Laura become estranged to a crew that is revealed as increasingly apathetic to the situation (except Phil, who just wants his damn boat back).

We're even given reason to despise everyone but Bill, Tim, and Laura, as we find out their relationship to one another. But even those reasons don't matter much, especially since they are really inconsequential whereas, the viewer would probably agree foisting them off on a deserted island if they were truly revealed as vicious characters. We are never given anything that could really give us the true value of their ways. And by this point, maybe something good could have come of it, an interesting element to the story. Nope. Still no signs of life though.

By the mid-end, the crew is driven out to the ocean while Tim tries to get a hold of Gary. He puts all of them on a nearby island (why one guy who didn't even hang on to his gun half the time couldn't have been jumped by at least four crew members by this point is beyond me) and meanwhile, all of this takes place pretty much in the middle of nowhere. And while Tim's getting all uncontrollable with Gary on the phone back on the boat, none of the crew seems to take seriously their opportunity for escape and rescue. They do take a chance beating him up, but after they do, they just leave him lying there on the ground while Phil and Bill complain about the boat somemore. And the finale is just as stupid.

This is one of the worst "thrillers" I have ever seen, because nothing in the movie really works to thrill you.

Great Scenery and Photography...Ridiculous Plot...Downhill From There!!
Scot617 June 2000
Well...OK..there is a decent stereo score too but the plot, if you can call it that is beyond ridiculous. Characters are totally unsympathetic to the extent that they are defined at all and no one in the movie is at all likeable. Everyone deserved the situation they found themselves in as far as I was concerned.

There is some great nautical photography and scenery in the tropics however. All of the action takes place on boats, in the ocean or on beaches.

Still Waiting for Something to Happen
LADodger8 April 2001
From the start of the movie it seemed as though something exciting was going to happen and then just as you completely lost interest in the bad script and bad acting (especially the actor who plays Phil)the "Crew" saves 2 people from a burning boat. From that point you are supposed to like the crew and hate the 2 people and then later on feel sorry for and like the 2 people and hate Phil. That is what is supposed to happen, but I found myself not carng about any of them or the little plot twists that were being thrown at me, as I waited for a big finish, because I assumed sometihng had to happen. Well I learned that just because not much happened during the movie doesn't mean sometihng will happen at the end. The only sub plot this movie comes close to following through with is the Tim and George sub plot and that never amounts to much.

TERRIBLE! Not sure which is worse: the plot (if one may say that it has one at all), the acting, or direction
jkling-127 April 2010
The ONLY upside is that it was a free on demand cable movie. And ... in that regard it's "worth the price of admission". LOL. Seriously, not at all.

It's hard to gauge what exactly was worst:

  • the plot (if one can say that it HAD one at all)

  • the acting (gosh-aweful at best), especially that of Bill (Donal Logue)

As my girlfriend just summarized - this is officially "time that I am not getting back".

This is easily one of the worst movies ever. Please save yourself the wasted time. We were about halfway through when it became pretty apparent that this was "just one really bad movie" and looked for reviews.

Bad acting based on an ever worse script...
niclaslillman14 December 2001
I thought this could turn out to be an interesting film when I first heard the plot. As often though, it turned out to be really boring - a boring story delivered by boring actors. Don´t waste your time on this one.

Finally caught this one...
HailSisto1 August 2003
As a collector of the works of Jeremy Sisto, this one had me working to obtain it.

As usual, Sisto did not disappoint. His "Tim" was brought to life with flair, depth, and quality, especially for a guy as young as he was at the time.

An interesting plot, it left me fairly depressed and sad by the end. Not your typical "Hollywood" ending by any measure. And I may never be able to see Mortensen the same again - he brought a real essence of brutality to his character.

Good movie without that feel in the indy, but just as searching and deep as most independent films.

The makers of this film should be grounded for life
movieman_kev31 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Two couples and a single guy go out for a relaxing boat ride. While out they see a couple in a burning boat that they go to help against the boat owner, Phil's objections. Turns out they're actually a transsexual smuggler (Jeremy Sisto) and the Cuban girl he's taking to America, who promptly takes over the boat.

This film poses the question can one have a character study when all said characters are one-dimensional idiots? The answer is no, or not a good one. The plot be what it may, is riddled with clunky symbolism and easily seen plot 'twists'. An hour and a half of complete and utter tedium. The makers of this film should be grounded for life (pun intended)

My grade: D-

character study
PeachHamBeach15 August 1999
This is a strange, out of the everyday but refreshing look at what happens when people who would definitely clash if they are forcibly brought together are brought together. Phillip (Viggo Mortensen, in a vicious, completely believable performance!!!) owns a beautiful white yacht, and is obviously extremely pleased with himself. How he got the means to get this pretty white boat is made obvious quite early on in the movie. The story begins when he invites sister Jennifer (Pamela Gidley), her husband Bill (Donal Logue), musician buddy Alex (John Philbin) and new "friend" Catherine Driftwood (Sam Jenkins) to join him on a cruise of the Carribean. The story starts a little slowly, but you do pick up on the notion that every one of these people has some little demon in his/her closet as they chatter and argue about marital vows, writers' block, barracuda and the AIDS virus. The story livens up when Bill spots a burning boat on the horizon, with what appears to be "a couple of chicks" in peril on board. Phillip isn't too keen on the idea of picking up total strangers from burning boats, especially if all they're gonna do is mess up his pretty white boat in some way, but Jen, Bill, Catherine and Alex insists it's the right thing to do, and Phil relents. Enter Camilla (Laura Del Sol) an illegal Cuban immigrant and Timothy (Jeremy Sisto) who is not exactly what Phillip would call a "chick" even though he's got breasts and is very womanly in every aspect of his personality. Tim and Phillip clash almost from the first moment, and Phillip gets an unpleasant surprise that might put his future with his pretty white boat in jeopardy. This movie is hard to find, but some videostores may have it. It's a good movie if you are into independent movies with provocative and original subject matter, and the characters are all interesting, even though Mortensen, Logue and Sisto steal the show in a three way tug-of-war for control of the crazy situation.

Good drama
rox-ul3 May 2003
I like this movie. It is a good drama with intense and thrilling emotions, though it is not an action movie. Maybe the acting could have been better, but still the dialog works very well. Also the sometimes dramatic photo works very well in enhancing the scenes without getting disturbing.

The plot is a boat trip that does not end as it was intended. The characters (the "crew") have different intentions with their life, but their reasons might not be the best and so it leads them astray and sometimes on colliding courses. For some the smog finally lifts while others stay helplessly lost.

Don't waist 100 minutes watching this
mgordonb25 April 2010
Warning: Spoilers
****May contain spoilers***.

I don't know what could possibly spoil this film more than it spoiled itself. I only kept watching hoping beyond hope that some development in the plot would rouse me from the coma I almost slipped into watching it. It was just plain weird and boring. I must agree with the above review the Mortensen's character, Phillip (though a criminal, a bigot and not very likable) is the only character in the film with any brains and common sense.

I suspect that the makers of this film were trying to draw sympathy for the homosexuals in this film. There seemed to be no other message. I'm afraid that they actually achieved the opposite from me. (Which I feel was too bad. Please, no accusations of bigotry).

I'm sorry but this was one of the most boring, flat, non-existent plots I've ever seen. It's basically a day in the life of 7 self indulged, whining brats. I couldn't feel the least bit sympathetic to any of there problems. I just wanted to slap them and yell "get a job and get over yourself!" And this is coming from someone you gets teary-eyed every time I watch The Green Mile or The Shawshank Redemption.

Don't bother!!!!
lilbulfy18 March 2010
The description of the movie makes it sound like it is going to be good. About three minutes into it, you realize that the person who wrote it must have been watching something else. I have seen bad movies in my time, but this is the cherry on top. I would like to write about the plot, however, there isn't one! But I will try.

***No Spoilers Here*** There is nothing to spoil.

Plot: People on a boat that don't like each other very much are out "joy" riding. They pick up a couple of people whose boat is on fire. One is Jeremy Sisto (Tim). He has boobs because he is a transvestite, I think, and all he does is have arguments with his boyfriend over the phone. The other characters don't really do anything but have lines to say. Even Viggo Mortensen can't get me interested. Something might happen in the end (I highly doubt it) but I didn't watch long enough to find out.

If I had known this was an independent film I would not have bothered. I have watched many independent films and I can't think of one I ever liked so I stopped watching them.

Please don't waste your time! A root canal is less painful!!

Eat your heart out Albert Pyun! There's a new boy in town!
Mac-598 January 2003
Warning: Spoilers
His name is Carl Colpaert.

Possible the only other man who can match or perhaps even surpass Mr. Pyun's astonishing directorial incompetence. I say this based only on my viewing of the Crew, 100 minutes of pure boredom. I haven't seen his other stuff but from what I hear, I wouldn't want to so I consider myself lucky in that respect.

Anyway, the Crew is a group of people out on a yacht, skippered by Philip (Viggo Mortensen). I don't now who played the others because most of them never even took off their sunglasses, which I'm sure was the actor's idea to avoid recognization. These "charactors" come without personalities so they pretty much spend their time laying around the boat doing nothing and saying nothing, with the exception of a few oddly placed discussions that have nothing to do with anything.

*spoilers ahead*

Soon the yacht heads out to the open sea, which is actually only about 20 meter offshore for film crew convenience, and soon run into a couple of chicks on a burning boat. What to do? Swim the 20 meters to shore or the 40 meters to the yacht? Guess. With land in PLAIN view behind them, they thank the Crew for saving their lives. Jesus.

The two chicks turns out to be one chick and one dude with breast implants, which is the films only original moment. Anyway to make a long story short, the she-man hijacks the boat, makes lots of long distance calls to his lover George, finally gets shot (YES!!!) and dumped in the sea.

This is the films ONLY story line. Everything else is chitchat.

I give this crap 3 stars out of a hundred. 1 star for a guy with breasts (interesting), 1 star for it's unpredictability, and one star for when the dude with rack gets wacked.

Not very normal
Walle-216 March 1999
4 friends on a boat ride. Another boat burns up. The 4 friends pick up the 2 passengers on the burned up boat. Sounds cool? Well, the things is that the 2 (man and girl or?) The man has breast!, and decides to kidnap the 4 friends so they´d drive him to where he wants. He also talks on the phone sometimes with his boyfriend, they argue and stuff. Very strange and weird. Wow, worst than a B movie
jmharvick-755-93828118 June 2019
I got in about 10 minutes into movie and had to turn it off. The acting is absolutely horrible, the guy that is supposed to be the rock star sounds horrible. I can't believe Viggo's acting is so bad. Horrible horrible movie. Watch if you really want to take a nap.

Pamela looks good in that white one-piece bathing suit.
tonopah624 April 2010
Everyone should have listened to Phil (Mortensen), who was undoubtedly the smartest of them all. Phil only wanted to have a nice day of boating, but a fire upon another boat ruins the day because he's urged to rescue two distressed passengers in need of assistance: one who is an illegal female immigrant, and the other being a sweetie-pie Shemale. But things go wrong for the crew - the sweetie-pie Shemale turns into a gun-totting Shemale, and hijacks the boat because he/she desperately wants to get to a rendezvous point to meet his male lover. Along with the hijacking: the story includes how the crew reacts to their own emotions concerning their life, so other occurrences take place as they argue among themselves about their personal problems. Bill gets drastic because of his frustrations concerning his sorry ass, and cheating wife, and turns his back on his relatives to help the hijackers against his brother-in-law (Mortensen); and from there Phil pits himself against the assholes who are ruining the day by attempting to regain control of his precious boat - which he does do, with a result that creates more of an ordeal. Good movie; it had tension!
