There was no suite then, was there?
There wasn’t much of a view, either.
No. I think we pretty much had to hitch to get there.
Pleased with the progress?
It’s been very nice.

Horror Channel has eight prime-time weekend film premieres in June including the UK premieres of Retreat, Carl Tibbets’ ‘ménage a trois of terror’ starring Thandie Newton, Cillian Murphy and Jamie Bell and R.D. Braunstein’s smartly gripping I Spit On Your Grave 3: Vengeance Is Mine – widely seen as the best of the series.
There are also network premieres for Jennifer Lynch’s uncompromising and dark chiller Chained, William Malone’s gruesome cyber thriller Feardotcom, starring Stephen Dorff and Natascha McElhone and Michael Reeves’s highly acclaimed Witchfinder General, starring Vincent Price.

At this past weekend’s Overlook Film Festival, Roger Corman was on hand to receive the “Master of Horror Award,” presented by Mick Garris. There are few people in the movie industry that have had the long lasting effect that Roger Corman has, and I was honored to speak with him during the festival to get his thoughts on modern filmmaking, seeing his older films digitally restored, and he also gave his advice to young filmmakers looking to stand out from the pack.
Congratulations on receiving the Master of Horror Award at the Overlook Film Festival. It’s such a great team behind the festival and I’m happy to see you as the first in hopefully a long line of “Master of Horror” recipients.
Roger Corman: I'm very pleased because I know the festival. I know this is the first time it's been held here, but I've known Mick Garris for many years,...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
The Lego Batman Movie won the weekend as expected, but not with nearly as much money as I had predicted, not besting the opening of The Lego Movie as expected, but instead ending up with a reasonable and not so bad $53 million. Fifty Shades Darker proved that the audience for movies based on the popular books was still great enough for it to win Friday with $21 million (to Lego Batman’s $15 million) and end up second for the weekend with a strong $46.6 million. That was still almost $40 million less than the opening of the previous movie Fifty Shades of Grey, but the sequel also didn’t have the benefits of Valentine’s Day and a four-day holiday. Coming in...

Star Wars, Terminator 2, Fantastic Beasts and more: they all have scenes in the trailer, that never made the final film...
More often than you might think, scenes that appear in movie trailer don’t turn up in the finished film. This can leave trailer-loving audience members confused as the credits roll, wondering if they dropped off and missed something important.
See related Iron Fist: what to expect from Marvel’s Netflix hero Luke Cage smashed Marvel's 2016 Netflix ratings Daredevil season 3: Vincent D’Onofrio mulls Fisk's return Marvel's The Defenders: more images arrive
A couple of massive movies have done this recently, and the internet has been quick to fill in the blanks with speculation. Fingers have been pointed at tinkering studio bigwigs and extensive reshoots, when the reality is often a little less dramatic: filmmakers always chop some footage in the edit, and they rarely have much involvement in the trailers.

"The Furniture" our weekly series on Production Design. Here's Daniel Walber...
Sleepy Hollow is an excellent October movie. It has well-placed jack-o-lanterns. Every frame shivers in the autumn chill. Washington Irving’s Hudson Valley falls under perpetually overcast skies, sapping the harvest season of its color. Rather than admire the changing leaves, Tim Burton emphasizes those aspects of fall that foreshadow the bitterness of winter.
This harsh climate swept up three Oscar nominations, including a win for production design. It’s a testament to Burton’s fanatically specific vision. Location scouting began in Irving’s New York, but the perfect town wasn’t there. It wasn’t in New England, either, nor even in Old England. After all of that searching, the design team ended up building an entire 18th century village from scratch at Leavesden and Shepperton Studios in the UK.
The final product is an expressionistic, spooky riff on colonial life.

Yikes. What a terrible weekend we just had, not only for the new movies released but also for the Weekend Warrior’s predictions. Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks’ Sully won its second weekend in a row with just under $22 million, but as far as the new movies, neither Lionsgate’s Blair Witch nor Universal’s Bridget Jones’s Baby did very well, putting the last nail in the coffin (hopefully) for sequels/remakes trying to play upon nostalgia that just isn’t there. (Good luck to the Rings movie opening next month!) Blair Witch ended up with $9.6 million to take second place and both Bridget Jones’s Baby and Oliver Stone’s Snowden ended up with around $8 million, so...

We're nearing that time of the year again, at the end of May, when we get to celebrate the birthdays of three of the biggest legends horror cinema has ever known. I'm talking of course about Vincent Price, Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. Had they all still lived, Peter would have become 103 this Thursday, and Friday would have seen Vincent reach 105, and Christopher (the eternal spring chicken of the three) reach 94. While all three were famous for horror, all were fine actors in their own right, and all possessed wonderful distinctive voices. No matter how good or bad the films were in which they starred, they made them better, and they brought class, grace and intelligence to the weirdest of places. With...

Ed Wood tells the story of the world’s worst movie director. Ed Wood Jr. was the man behind a number of inept American b-pictures such as Glen Or Glenda, Bride Of The Monster and his bizarro world masterwork Plan 9 From Outer Space. Wood (played in the film by Johnny Depp) had an incompetent directorial style, which included casting a group of non-actors that included dope addicts, transvestites, a struggling TV horror queen and the fading Hollywood legend Bela Lugosi. He was content to botch scenes by allowing his actors to muff their lines and he also mixed day and night shots together with no disregard for continuity. “Meat’s meat and a man’s gotta eat!” Heed the battle cry of Farmer Vincent Smith, maker of the finest smoked meats around. People would come from far and wide to purchase his delectable fritters, unaware that his special ‘ingredient’ was plain folk, like you and me. 35 years ago, Vincent and his Motel Hell cut off a slice of Americana and served it up in theaters, with a heaping help of humor for good measure. Cannibalism was never this down home friendly.
My initial memories of Motel Hell formulated around two images: The front cover of Issue #9 (November 1980) of Fangoria magazine, the new horror monthly that specialized in the kind of gruesome images that it’s gentler forefather, Famous Monsters of Filmland, wasn’t comfortable delving in to. Upon the cover was a picture of a man in bib overalls, wearing a pig’s head and brandishing a blood...

Sometimes it’s psychological. Sometimes it’s visceral. It can be a masked killer’s twisted pastime. A labyrinth our poor heroes must find their way out of. Perhaps a nasty round of torture by the Big Bad. Whatever it is, the sick feeling of impending doom overcomes us as we realize the characters might not make it out alive. Sometimes they can think their way through. Sometimes they can fight. But when the exits are closed and the madman decides to get creative, all bets are off.

Cliff Saxton is the Archivist for Micds (Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School), known as St. Louis Country Day School when Vincent Price attended in the 1920’s. In 2011 I asked Mr. Saxton to write an article about Vincent Price’s days at Country Day in honor of Vincentennial, the Vincent Price 100th Birthday Celebration, which we were preparing. Like most talented performers who’ve doubled as quintessential movie stars, Tom Cruise doesn’t always get the chance to demonstrate that he can actually act. There’s often just too much Tom Cruise in the way for people to notice, especially when he lets his erratic personal life take center stage. Putting together an “essential” list for such an actor is a bit of a tightrope act, walking the line between crowd pleasing star turns and performances of real substance. That said, here are ten Tom Cruise films that are not to be missed:
Risky Business (1983) – The early 80s were awash in teen sex comedies, most of which have justifiably faded from memory. Then there’s Risky Business, which not only rose above the pack, but made an indelible mark on pop culture history. It wasn’t Tom Cruise’s first movie, but it might as well have been:...

British actress Elizabeth Shepherd is best known for her dual performance as the strong-willed Lady Rowena and the ghostly Lady Ligeia opposite Vincent Price in director Roger Corman’s The Tomb Of Ligeia in 1965. Ms Shepherd has enjoyed a long career in movies and in British television since 1959 and her most recent big screen role was as Hillary Swank’s mother-in-law in the 2008 Amelia Earhart biography Amelia. However, it’s the stage is where she most loves to perform and that’s where we caught up with her for this interview as she was preparing for her role in an upcoming production of the play Pygmalion in Houston. We had invited Ms Shepherd to be a guest of honor at Vincentennial, the Vincent Price 100th Birthday Celebration in May of 2011 here in Price’s hometown of St. Louis, but she had committed to the play and was unable to accept our invitation.

Today is Vincent Price’s 104th Birthday! Price was born here in St. Louis on this date in 1911 and is the most iconic movie star to hail from our city. Price, who died October 25th 1993, was also a gourmand, author, stage actor, speaker, world-class art collector, raconteur, and all-around Renaissance man. Vincent Price was simply one of the most remarkable people of the 20th Century. Four years ago we had the opportunity to celebrate his 100th birthday and St. Louis was the place to do it. I teamed up with Cinema St. Louis to present Vincentennial, The Vincent Price 100th Birthday Celebration, an event that lasted through much of the Spring of 2011. The following year Vincentennial won two coveted Rondo Awards, one for “Best Fan Event” and a second for myself as “Monster Kid of the Year” for directing the event. Ian Ogilvy in his latest film, "We Still Kill the Old Way", now available on Blu-ray and DVD.
Ian Ogilvy: Saints, Sorcerers and Secret Agents
Cinema Retro's Mark Mawston recently caught up with the legendary Ian Ogilvy to discuss projects past and present.
Mark Mawston: Ian, your film career began in the mid 60’s with The She Beast, directed by Michael Reeves. You had a great relationship with him. How did that come about?
Ian Ogilvy: Well, when we were 15 years old we made a couple of amateur movies together after we were introduced by a mutual friend and we became great friends. I used to stay at his mother’s house with him in Norfolk and over two years we made these two little amateur movies. I then lost contact with him as I went off and did different things like attending drama school and he went...

Tim Burton is perhaps one of the most unique and exciting filmmakers working today. With a vision inspired by classic horror and a dry wit, his films are often fiercely entertaining and endlessly clever. Of course, that’s not to say that there aren’t dark spots on his filmography. Like every filmmaker he’s had his missteps but even when the movies don’t quite work Burton manages to create films that are visually stunning and artistic. With the recent release of Big Eyes and a possible sequel to Beetlejuice in the works, examining Burton’s work and influence is more important than ever.
17. Planet of the Apes (2001): Even when a Burton film has issues there are usually some redeeming factors (see Darks Shadows’ amazing style) but, oh man, one really has to look hard to find something good in this disaster of a movie. Sure, the makeup...

Welcome To Issue 77!
If This Is Your First Time Here: Welcome! This is my weekly column where I talk about superhero movie news, rumors and speculation.
This Week: New Ant-Man trailer! New Daredevil details! New Composers and a kickoff to Marvel's victory lap year.
It’s the first week of a big year and Marvel’s been throwing down a bunch of stuff, knowing damn well this is the last year of them being on top of the default superhero mega franchise pile. Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad are representing DC’s big launch into the game next year and both of them are crossover movies in the sense that they’ll be featuring well known characters from different DC Comics. Fox just took hold of 2016 for the X-Men, adding Gambit to 2016’s Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse to take a grand total of Three installments in the year.

Dark, strange, haunting and creative filmmaking is the trademark of Tim Burton’s work. He has the ability to bring some of the most evocative dreams and haunting of nightmares to life; his talent allows the imagination to walk right into the worlds he has created and for all of the critical apathy to some of his later works, there has never been a compromise on his vision. From his first five-minute film Vincent to this season’s release of Big Eyes, there are not many other directors that can claim to have such a dedicated and admiring hoard of fans who will soak up all of his wildest creations.
You can almost set your watch by his trademarks: monsters, ghouls, witches, doors into the after-life, evil, good, blood and gore are just some of the features of his eerie movies. Prominently in every film there will an heroic Outcast,...

What will horror fans be watching this Christmas? Nick's got some ideas
The phrase “camp as Christmas” seems the only appropriate way to describe this month’s festive special as we take a look at the Blu-ray release of six Edgar Allan Poe adaptations combining the formidable talents of the great Vincent Price and the glorious “King of B-Movies”, Roger Corman.
Filmed relatively early in Corman’s incredibly prolific sixty-year career (over 400 movies produced, more than fifty films directed and he’s even starred in thirty-odd to boot!), this month’s Six Gothic Tales boxset covers all but one of his and Price’s early 60s Poe-themed Aip productions, from the morose The Fall Of The House Of Usher right through to 1964’s UK-based The Tomb Of Ligeia.
The first thing to note is the difficulty in believing the man responsible for Inhumanoid, Subliminal Seduction and the upcoming Sharktopus...

Everybody has to start somewhere.
The best and most successful Hollywood directors might find themselves marshalling $200 million epics, but in their formative years big budgets weren't at their disposal and they had to make do only with a good idea and the drive to make it happen. Many filmmakers use shorts to test-run ideas and explore themes they'd circle back to down the line.
From Christopher Nolan to Steven Spielberg, we look at nine short films that helped kick-start careers behind the camera.
1. Christopher Nolan - Doodlebug (1997)
Even before he hit it big, Interstellar director Christopher Nolan was distorting reality with his film work.
Doodlebug - led by Nolan's Following star Jeremy Theobald - played out an intriguing narrative loop over a brisk three minutes as a man chased a 'bug' around his flat with a shoe. A year after he made this film, Nolan took his feature debut Following...

Kevin McCallister is all grown up now. Macaulay Culkin celebrates his 34th birthday today (August 26), so what better time to take a trip down memory lane to find out what happened to the cast of Culkin's greatest work: Home Alone.
Digital Spy goes 'then & now' with the cast of the comedy classic below...
Macaulay Culkin
The biggest child star of the '90s, Culkin spent almost a decade away from screen acting following 1994's Ri¢hie Ri¢h. After a stint on London's West End in Madame Melville, he returned to TV and film in 2003 with roles in Will & Grace and Party Monster. His acting parts since have been sparse - a 2010 Robot Chicken Christmas special is his last (voice only) credit - but Culkin seems to have found his calling as the frontman of a Velvet Underground pizza-themed cover band.

The St. Louis Globe-Democrat is a monthly newspaper run by Steve DeBellis, a well know St. Louis historian, and it’s the largest one-man newspaper in the world. The concept of The Globe is that there is an old historic headline, then all the articles in that issue are written as though it’s the year that the headline is from. It’s an unusual concept but the paper is now in its 27th successful year! Steve and I collaborated in 2011 on an all-Vincent Price issue of The Globe and he has asked me to write a regular monthly movie-related column. Since there is no on-line version of The Globe, I will be posting all of my articles here at We Are Movie Geeks. Since this month’s St. Louis Globe-Democrat is written as if it’s 1959, I decided to write about two of my favoririte films from that...

Blockbuster season is almost upon us, but what will next summer's big hitters be? Here's a roundup
Once upon a time, summer blockbuster season 2015 was set to be packed with the biggest collision of big franchises we'd ever seen together. However, one by one, lots of these films moved away to other dates. As such, you won't be seeing Star Wars: Episode VII, Pirates Of The Caribbean 5, Independence Day 2, Batman Vs Superman or Finding Dory in a cinema next summer.
But even with those films gone, there's still no shortage of huge movies battling for your cash in a year's time. And as is traditional for us at the start of summer blockbuster season, we've taken a look at what's coming up in 12 months' time.
We kick off at the start of April (although note that March has Kenneth Branagh’s live action Cinderella movie,...

Thanks to his daughter, Victoria, late legendary actor Vincent Price is very much alive online as the focus of a new official website.
Victoria Price in December launched VincentPrice.com to give fans of the horror film great a personal look at "The Elegant Side of Evil." In a recent phone interview, Price told me what fans are getting now is just the start of what promises to be a comprehensive look at her father's life and career.
To date the site has a blog that Price authors, along with video, fan resources, and assorted news regarding her father, including an initiative to get Vincent Price on a U.S. Postage stamp. There's also a new section on the 50th anniversary edition of A Treasury of Great Recipes, which Vincent and his wife, Mary authored in 1965. The commemorative edition will be released in 2015, Victoria Price says.

Everyone knows about "Vincent," one of Tim Burton's earliest short films. But way before his 1982 short there was "Doctor of Doom," a 1979 film school project that looks like the evil offspring of an Ed Wood and David Lynch film. If the IMDb credits page is to be believed, the co-stars of this mini-epic all went on to work at Disney Animation. However, the IMDb page also says that Doctor Doom is played by director Brad Bird, but I'm pretty sure that is a young Tim Burton in the role.

The death of Richard Matheson on 22 June 2013 marked the end of an amazing career as a novelist and screenwriter. His most enduring legacy will always be as the author of I Am Legend, arguably one of the finest vampire novels ever written. Considered ‘the very peak of paranoid science fiction,’ Matheson’s groundbreaking debut novel is one of the few contemporary vampire stories that came close to the literary excellence of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
With plans of a sequel to the Will Smith misfire I Am Legend (2007) being seriously considered by filmmakers, there is only one thing that fans of Matheson’s outstanding post apocalyptic work are asking “when is there going to be a Proper film version of the book?”
Published in 1954, I Am Legend tells the terrifying tale of Robert Neville, the sole survivor of a mysterious airborne virus that has turned everyone, including his wife Virginia and best friend Ben Cortman,...

When it was released twenty years ago, The Nightmare Before Christmas was not an immediate success. However, over the following two decades, it has become one of the most beloved holiday movies, and composer Danny Elfman admits that autograph seekers inevitably have The Nightmare Before Christmas merchandise for him to sign above all other films he has worked on. When the 15th Anniversary 2-Disc Collector’s Edition DVD was released in 2008, Elfman joined in with producer Tim Burton and director Henry Selick to record a commentary track. This track, along with many of the other bonus features, is also included on the 3D Blu-ray, which was released in 2011 (and likely all other annual releases as Disney moves forward). Seeing as we’re at the half-way point between Halloween and Christmas, and since it is the 20th anniversary of the film’s release, it seemed appropriate to revisit the film and hear what the filmmakers had to say...

The holiday shopping season officially kicks off tonight and we know it can be difficult to find presents for horror fans that seem to have everything. To help make things easier, we’ve put together the initial list of our holiday gift suggestions, which include cannibal wine, classic horror shirts, vinyl figures and Blu-ray collections.
While a handful of these items are only available at select websites, you should be able to find some pretty good sales on other items starting tonight. Specifically, Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart will have big sales on Blu-ray/DVD titles and video games. We’d like to give Tamika Jones a big thanks for helping put this guide together.

This week the former star of "Harry Potter" gets hotter as the squeaky-clean Emma Watson shows off her inner bad girl in Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring," where her character Nicki commits a series of robberies against celebs like Paris Hilton. For the 23-year-old Watson, who shot to fame as goodie-two-shoes wizard Hermione Granger in the "Potter" movies, this role marks a distinct departure from both her on-screen and real-life images. The only thing more shocking would be if Lindsay Lohan maintained sobriety for six months.
While we're all hoping young Ivy Leaguer Watson doesn't follow in the Lohan mold and quit Brown University for the School of Hard Knocks, let's take a look at some other actors who shed their media-sanctioned image to take on roles nobody saw coming. From Tom Cruise going bad to Jennifer Aniston going perv, these actors played against type for keeps.

While we’e been covering many of the Scream Factory releases for our Us readers, Arrow Video has been releasing horror classics in the UK for a while now and they recently announced their next set of Blu-ray releases. Take a look at release details, cover art, and bonus features for The Fall of the House of Usher, Lifeforce, Deranged, and Squirm. We’ve also included details for Motel Hell, which we covered earlier this week.
Motel Hell: “It takes all kinds of critters to make Farmer Vincent fritters!” cackle the brother-and-sister team behind the finest smoked meats in the county. They also run the friendly Motel Hello (the ‘o’ in the neon sign sometimes goes on the blink), and no matter how many times you’ve seen Psycho or The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, you can be sure that everything will be perfectly above board here as Vincent...

Sequels are awesome, plain and simple. Returning to familiar characters and worlds we love is like covering yourself with a warm blanket, although when a sequel is bad it can be like a blanket covered in potato bugs and lice. Studios love sequels because seven times out of ten they open huge, no matter how good they are.
