There’s Something In The Barn is a Norwegian/Finnish Christmas horror comedy. An American nuclear family moves to Norway after inheriting a farmhouse and a barn. Their plan is to turn the barn into a small hotel. The problem is that the barn is inhabited by a fjøsnisse, a barn elf.
After a short prologue the film kicks off with the Nordheim family - Bill the dad (Martin Starr), Carol the stepmom (Amrita Acharia), Nora the teenager (Zoe Winther-Hansen), and Lucas the kid (Townes Bunner) - travelling to their new home. During the car journey they see a road sign warming of elk ahead. They all get out of the car, stand in the middle of the road and start taking selfies with the sign. On spotting an elk calf they try to approach, but the bull elk takes great offence. This ignorance of place and lack of common sense plays out.

Family trip to Norway that falls prey to a killer gremlin isn’t silly or scary enough to provide much entertainment
You’re in Norway now. Nothing bad ever happens.” That’s an American dad reassuring his two kids, not long after they move to the Norwegian countryside to a farm he’s inherited. The plan is to convert the barn out back into a snug Airbnb rental. Trouble is, there’s a foul tempered nisse – or elf – living in the barn. So, yes, essentially this is a movie about killer garden gnomes. It’s a silly horror that’s not as good, or as bad, as you’d hoped: neither funny enough nor ever properly scary. That said, there are some cheerfully gory bits and a smattering of decent culture clash gags.

It’s October, so it’s time for two things: pumpkin spice on everything and the start of Christmas marketing. And just in time, the Norwegian holiday horror-comedy There’s Something in the Barn makes its world premiere at Fantastic Fest.
Bill inherits his uncle’s house in Norway after the man dies in a freak accident. We, of course, know it was no accident, and soon enough so will Bill, his wife and Bill’s kids Nora and Lucas (Townes Bunner) will too.
They relocate from California to Norway with plans to open a bed and breakfast, but complications ensue. Both in the obvious cultural differences and, more ominously, what Lucas discovers living in the barn.

Christmas horror movies don’t come around too often, but every now and then we get gems like Black Christmas, Gremlins, Rare Exports and Krampus. Magnus Martens‘ evil elf horror comedy There’s Something in the Barn tries to hit that holiday horror comedy sweet spot that falls somewhere between Gremlins and Krampus, but misses the mark on both counts. It winds up being a forgettable, if mildly amusing, movie that doesn’t seem to know which audience it’s playing to.

Christmas horror movies are something special. The best ones take a time that -- for many -- is peaceful and full of joy, then juxtapose the lights, the carols, the gatherings, and the parties with absolute carnage in a way that results in a fun time.
Within Christmas horror there's an even more specific subgenre of Christmas horror creature features, which play with specific Christmas beliefs and traditions and twist them into gory, violent monsters. Movies like Mike Dougherty's "Krampus" and Jalmari Helander's "Rare Exports" do this, and now, the pseudo spiritual trilogy is complete with Magnus Martens's "There's Something in the Barn." This family Christmas horror movie takes clear inspiration from "Gremlins" and '80s genre movies, and wraps it in a hilarious fish-out-of-water story of an American family moving to Norway. It's laced with smart jabs at both cultures, and features Martin Starr doing a great obliviously silly performance.
