It's not the first time that internationally acclaimed maestro Hirokazu Koreeda put his effort on a serial drama. In 2019 he directed the first episode and coordinated the collective show “A Day-Off of Kasumi Arimura” and before that, in 2012, he directed the lovely (a personal favourite) “Going My Home”, starring Hiroshi Abe as a clumsy father struggling with his roles as son and as father too. However, his recent “The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House” has been propelled to global audience by the intervention of giant platform Netflix. The show is co-written, co-produced and co-directed by Koreeda, alongside a handful of Japanese filmmakers and is based on a famous manga of the same title that has sold more than 1.8 million copies in Japan.

BTS’ V, aka Kim Taehyung, is currently preparing for his military enlistment. Ahead of the impending mandatory service, Tae is making the most of his time with his BTS family and Wooga Squad. Recently, the singer met with his hyung (older brother), Park Seo Joon, and Na Yeon Seok, aka Na Pd.
V, 27, celebrates his birthday on December 30th. However, this year, the singer will not be able to ring in the occasion with his fans as he traditionally does, as he would have begun his military training by then in an army base camp. During a conversation, V mentioned how he will miss out on celebrating his birthday this year due to the upcoming enlistment. But he forgot he has the best of friends in the world who would never leave a chance to make him special.

From action-packed thrillers like “Squid Game” and “All of Us Are Dead” to romantic comedies like “Business Proposal” and “Crash Landing on You,” it seems the world can’t get enough of K-dramas these days. The successful distribution of Korean media around the world has led to the celebration of brilliant filmmakers like Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon-ho. However, if you ask an American cinephile or film critic to name one Korean woman director they would likely not be able to come up with an answer.
With its ongoing series “A New Wave of K-Cinema: Korean Women Directors,” The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is hoping to change that. Across the month of June, the Los Angeles museum is showing 10 contemporary Korean films made by women that “explore the complexities of diverse conditions, including the trauma of domestic violence, investigations into gender and class politics, humanity’s relation to nature and the environment, and love and friendship.”
Hyesung ii, who organized “A New Wave of K-Cinema,” told TheWrap it is a series she has had in mind since she began working at the museum. “As...

2022 was finally the year that the Korean box office, after the pandemic, was defibrillated back to life. Producers and distributors were finally confident that the time was right for big budget, blockbuster projects, that had long been queueing up for a release, to start making their way to the theatres. After having to resort to Ott streaming and generally smaller scale films, the audience too was hungry to see high-value productions, entertainment and their favorite stars on the big screen and thronged to the theatres, lapping up these releases. So much so that 2022 saw four new films make their way into the 100 highest grossing Korean films of all tie at the domestic box-office, with Ma Dong-seok’s “The Roundup” even rolling comfortably into the top 10.
2023 too began strongly, with the long-in-production “The Point Men” starring Hwang Jung-min and Hyun Bin and the Sol Kyung-gu led ensemble spy thriller “Phantom” opening the year strong.

A sequel to the 2017 blockbuster “Confidential Assignment”, in which the main leads returns to a different director for a relatively much the same ordeal they went through before. Now, however, they have to put up with an unwelcomed FBI agent from the States. The movie went on to become the third highest-grossing Korean film of 2022 besides receiving the Blue Dragon Film Awards’ “Popular Star Award” for its stars Im Yoon-ah and Daniel Henney.
The film kicks off in New York City where FBI agent Jack (Daniel Henney) intercepts a drug deal and arrests the ruthless North Korean crime leader Jang Myong-jun (Jin Seon-kyu). While Jang is being transported back to Pyongyang, his thugs ambush the FBI agents and he escapes after a fierce street shootout. The coronavirus pandemic had a very detrimental effect not just on film production but also distribution and release. Productions with an international shooting schedule in particularly were heavily hit, having to either cancel shoots altogether or wait and change locations to resume production. However, with the ease in movement and the opening of the world, these projects were able to finish and 2022 in particular was a good year for these long-gestating films. Possibly the biggest and longest-delayed project of these is the history-making real-life crime thriller “The Point Men”, which has just released its first trailer and set a January 2023 release date for itself.

For the second weekend running, comedy action film “Confidential Assignment 2: International” held top spot at the South Korean box office. And it did so with a massive 75 share of the market.
But as the Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) holiday retreated into the rear-view mirror numbers, both for the sequel film and the nationwide box office, came crashing down.
“Confidential Assignment 2” earned 6.89 million over the latest Friday to Sunday period, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). That figure was down 57 compared with its opening salvo of 21.0 million a week earlier.
Still, since opening on Sept. 7, the film has already amassed 35.2 million. That makes it the fifth highest grossing film of the year to date, ahead of “Hunt” and behind “Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”

A co-production between South Korea, Hong Kong, China and the United States, it is the fourth remake of the now-lost 1966 Lee Man-hee homonymous melodrama classic.
Anna Chen is imprisoned in Washington after man-slaughtering her husband, 7 years ago. The actual story begins when she is informed of her mother’s death and is granted a three-day leave to attend the funeral in Seattle. On the bus to Seattle, she comes across a Korean immigrant named Hoon, who initially asks her for money to pay his fare. Eventually, the two are acquainted, with Hoon revealing that he is a gigolo. The two of them spent many of Anna’s days together, with him on the run from a client’s husband and her revealing facts about her situation in the grey and foggy surroundings of Seattle.
Kim Tae-young directs a film that, despite having a dramatic base, is actually a subtle romance.

A Merry Zombie Xmas
December 24, 2020 – January 7, 2021
In a world where the 3 Bs are edging towards massive mainstream success, and an age when all things “K” are synonymous with “crazy, sexy, cool”, another phenomenon has been going viral and global: the zombie movie “made in Korea”.
Filmmakers from the peninsula have injected new life in the undead genre, bringing both a bit of a Midas and Lazarus touch to a mythology that has been exploited almost to death. Original storylines spanning wildly diverse settings, from the Joseon era to our troubled times and even dark Mad Max-style dystopian futures, in-depth character development, and a clear-eyed look at today’s societal fears have raised the biters back from the realm of putrid pop fiction.
As the holiday season approaches, it’s time to celebrate the reinvigorated genre, powered by the...

In a world still largely struggling with Covid-19 most film and TV productions remain halted. South Korea is one of the few places where filming has restarted – albeit hesitantly.
Among the most prominent are two Netflix original series. “We worked quickly to develop safety protocols so that series such as our new drama ‘Move to Heaven,’ and the popular romantic series ‘Love Alarm’ could continue filming,” Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos wrote in the La Times.
“Testing there is only available for people with symptoms. So all cast and crew have their temperatures checked regularly, and if anyone were to show signs of infection they would be tested immediately and production paused.” Both productions started filming in April.
Other TV series that had temporarily stopped filming, and which have now resumed production include tvN’s “Hospital Playlist,” and “Hi Bye, Mama!” and Kbs’ “Soul Mechanic.”

Netflix is continuing to expand its originals drive in Korea by adding romantic comedy series Crash Landing On You to its slate.
The Svod service has ordered the series, starring popular local actors Hyun Bin (Memories of the Alhambra) and Son Ye-jin (Something in the Rain), to air later this year.
The series is described by the digital platform as if Dorothy met the Wizard of Oz by accident.
Crash Landing On You is a love story of an oddly-matched couple coming from very different backgrounds. Yoon Se-ri, played by Son Ye-jin, is a beautiful heiress and a leading fashion businesswoman in South Korea, who meets North Korean military officer Lee Jung-hyeok, played by Hyun Bin, when she is swept up by a wind storm and accidentally crashes in North Korean territory while paragliding.
Jung-hyeok’s life has been nothing but great so far and he has a bright future ahead of him.

Memories of Alhambra — the unique K-drama airing on the Total Variety Network (tvN) starring Park Shin-Hye and Hyun Bin — recently aired its penultimate and final episodes. Skip to paragraph after next image to avoid! As we know from the 14th and penultimate episode, the reason why the Next Ar game is able to kill people is a bug in its system. “Rampant” is a 2018 South Korean historical action zombie film directed by Kim Sung-hoon and penned by Hwang Jo-yun. It follows the successful path of other Korean zombie movies with the blockbuster movie “The train to Busan” having the lead.
The story of “Rampant” in contrast to its precedents, it takes place in the Joseon era currently ruled by King Lee Jo (Kim Eui-sung) who sees his Kingdom falling apart. The opening sequence of the movie includes a battle on a flaming ship carrying guns. Crown Prince Lee Young (cameo by Kim Tae-woo) was willing to buy these guns in order to fight the Qing army, despite the opposition from the King. Conspiracies fill the palace and the war minister Kim Ja-joon (Jang Dong-gun) having his own secret agenda with the target to ascend the throne, he becomes the leader of an upcoming uprising. Memories of the Alhambra, the highly-anticipated K-drama by the Total Variety Network (tvN), debuted last weekend. Given its production and star power, it was understandable why it did so well in domestic viewership. Internationally, it is possible Memories of the Alhambra will make Netflix a real contender for international streaming of K-dramas. As mentioned earlier, domestic viewership in South Korea is understandably high given its production and star power. According to Agb Nielsen Korea, the averages for both the premier and second episodes were 7.4 percent for the nation and 9.18 percent for Seoul. Tns Media Korea recorded an overall […]

“Memories of the Alhambra” is a suspense romance drama that revolves around an investment company CEO who visits Granada, Spain, for a business trip and gets involved in a mysterious incident after staying in an old hostel run by a Korean woman. The show is directed by Ahn Gil-ho (“Stranger”) and written by Song Jae-jung, well-known for her work including “Queen and I,” “Nine: Nine Time Travels,” and “W: Two Worlds.”
The 16-episode series was produced by Studio Dragon, one of Korea’s largest scripted television production outfits, with such credits as “Guardian: The Lonely and Great God” and “The Legend of the Blue Sea.” It was originally commissioned by Korean cable network tvN.
New episodes of the show will play out globally on Netflix from Dec. 1, an hour after their broadcast in Korea.

The actor-director team behind last year's hit spy action-comedy Confidential Assignment returns with their latest tentpole Rampant, an action-horror that looks to put a period twist on Yeon Sang-ho's runaway 2016 zombie hit Train to Busan. Hyun Bin versus the undead in Joseon Era-regalia may sound like an intriguing proposition, but while this big-budget foray from director Kim Sung-hoon attempts to combine genre thrills with a political allegory, it winds up being both a bloodless zombie tale and a humdrum King's court drama. A rebellion is brewing in the Joseon Kingdom against the King (Kim Eui-sung) and his war minister Kim Ja-joon (Jang Dong-gun). The Crown Prince (Kim Tae-woo), siding with the rebels, summons his brother Ganglim (Hyun Bin), who has been exiled in the...

Staff handed out plastic ponchos. Red carpet-goers toted capes and umbrellas on Thursday night in Busan’s Centum City. But the storm clouds whipped up by Typhoon Kong-Rey served more to add to the atmosphere of the Busan International Film Festival’s opening ceremony, rather than to dampen spirits.
After three years being buffeted by a political storm, and a partially-observed cold front of a Korean industry boycott, there was a sense that the festival is returning to some kind of normality.
While the iconic former festival chief Kim Dong-ho was not spotted on the red carpet, the festival is now, once again, in the hands of Lee Yong-kwan and Jay Jeon, who co-founded the festival with Kim 23 years ago.
A highlight of the opening ceremony was the barely announced arrival of ace music composer Ryuichi Sakamoto. He strode across the stage and knocked out a piano medley, including a segment from “Merry Christmas,...

"We will overturn the world tonight." Well Go USA has debuted the first teaser trailer for a "fresh new take" on zombie horror titled Rampant, from the studio that released Train to Busan. A darkness looms over ancient Korea: murderous creatures known as Night Demons have overrun the country. Returning from a long imprisonment abroad, Prince Ganglim discovers that it will take the strength of his entire kingdom to stop the bloody rampage spreading across the nation. The cast includes Jang Dong-Gun, Hyun Bin, Kim Eui-sung, Jo Woo-jin, Kim Ju-hyuk, and Jo Dal-hwan. The "Night Demons" creatures in this don't seem like full-on zombies as we know them, but they're still crazy vicious. And I really dig the period setting for this zombie movie, that's something we don't see too often. Might be fun to watch. Check this out below. Here's the first teaser trailer (+ two posters) for Kim Sung-hoon's Rampant,...

Stars Hyun Bin and Yoo Ji-tae go toe-to-toe in this month's The Swindlers, a loose and jazzy caper thriller that mines Korea's abundant fascination with grifters. Or at least that's what it attempts to do, as this blatant ripoff of the work of director Choi Dong-hoon (Tazza: The High Rollers, The Thieves) is a grating star vehicle that smacks of smug ineptitude and a whole lot of cut corners. After swindling countless unsuspecting victims, a master con man disappears with a huge fortune and when the prosecution fails to track him down they write him off as dead. Later, ambitious prosecutor Hee-su catches wind that the man has resurfaced and he engages the help of three tricksters he shadily harbors on his payroll. Together they...
