For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit “Friday the 13th: The Series,” which aired from 1987 to 1990 – and did not feature Jason Voorhees in a single episode.
One of the best memories of my childhood involves five year old me, my four year old brother and my mom hunkering down in front of the TV on a Saturday with some jelly cookies, and putting on channel 11 to watch “Friday the 13th: The Series.” Since my mom’s idea of winding down is watching anything horror oriented, we were more than happy to oblige, and “Friday the 13th: The Series” offered up the proper level of scares to keep me invested but never frightened. The series debuted in October of 1987, and stars Canadian pop star and model Robey as Micki Foster, a young woman who inherits the antique store “Vendredi’s Antique’s” from her Uncle Lewis.
But this is no ordinary antique shop…...

The episode of Revisited covering Species was Written by Ric Solomon, Narrated by Kier Gomes, Edited by Joseph Wilson, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
The 1990s were famous for Alien Invasion films. Independence Day, The X-Files Movie, Alien 3 and Mars Attacks all come to mind. Yes, those are all great but what about Roger Donaldson’s classic 1995 creature feature Species (watch it Here)? Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is the beautiful Natasha Henstridge and this being her first acting role. She’s an absolute terror and force to be reckoned with here. Species is something of a cult classic and one we need to talk about. So, on this episode of Horror Revisited, let’s dive back into one of the better Sci-fi 90s films.
The initial concept for Species came from a script called The Message...

"Friday the 13th Part III" holds a special place in many a horror fan's heart. Not only is it the only disco-themed 3D entry of the extensive franchise, it's the first to depict slasher king Jason Voorhees in the hockey mask that would become his trademark, as recognizable as Freddy Krueger's bladed glove or Michael Myers' Shatner mask.
Steve Miner's 1982 horror sequel built upon the lore of Voorhees, who began his reign of terror in "Part 2" wearing a plain burlap sack over his head (not dissimilar from the Phantom's bag-mask in Charles B. Pierce's '76 horror picture "The Town That Dreaded Sundown"). "Part 3" sees the introduction of fresh blood at Camp Crystal Lake, a new group of young people staying near the cursed place for a weekend. Among them is Shelly (Larry Zerner), a prankster who brings along theatrical blood, trick props, and a hockey mask (originally...

“The Addams Family,” the big-screen adaptation of Charles Addams’ comic stories of an aristocratic family with a taste for the macabre, became a box office sensation when it opened in theaters in 1991. The film, which had built-in interest thanks to the popularity of the 1960s television show that was also spawned by Addams’ cartoons, defied the odds to become one of the year’s biggest commercial hits.
A lot of things could have gone wrong or proved fatal before it got to that point. Orion, the studio that had greenlighted the picture and entrusted first-time filmmaker Barry Sonnenfeld to strike the right darkly silly tone, went bankrupt, and Paramount, which bought the project from the failing studio, had its own internal power shift. Plus, the track record of turning TV properties into watchable films is spotty at best. For every “The Fugitive” or “Mission: Impossible,” there are scores of duds like “Baywatch,...

A decade before Scream sent up slasher flicks, another comedy thriller had fun with the genre.
1986’s April Fool’s Day was produced by Frank Mancuso Jr., son of then-Paramount chairman Frank Mancuso Sr. Together, father and son had produced five sequels to 1980’s sleeper hit Friday the 13th. He selected a script by Danilo Bach, who had achieved massive success for Paramount writing 1984’s Beverly Hills Cop. A film I’ve talked about ad nauseam for like decades now, Fred Walton’s April Fool’s Day has been a favorite of mine ever since I discovered it on VHS during the summer of 1987.
[Spoiler warning if you haven't seen April Fool's Day.] To me, it’s always been the perfect anti-slasher, where no one in the film really dies (unless you count the film’s missing ending), and instead leans into the whodunit aspects that are driving the mystery of just who exactly is terrorizing Muffy St. John (played by Deborah Foreman) and her friends during what’s supposed to be their idyllic lakeside weekend away from the stresses of college life.
What it may lack in an official body count, April Fool’s Day more than makes up for with its whip-smart script, charismatic performances, and a whopper of an ending that I certainly wasn’t expecting at all the first time I saw it.

Almost 30 years ago, director Tom McLoughlin brought Jason Voorhees back from the brink for the appropriately titled sequel, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. But it turns out McLoughlin initially planned for a follow-up back in ’86, and let’s just say things got weird.
While appearing on the latest episode of Post Mortem (with a tip of the hat to Bloody Disgusting), Tom McLoughlin spoke to fellow horror director Mick Garris about his proposed Jason Lives sequel, and how it would’ve drafted comedy duo Cheech and Chong (!) into the equation.
As McLoughlin recalls down below, this idea came into being soon after producer Frank Mancuso Jr. discovered that New Line held the screen rights to Freddy Krueger, thereby nixing any potential crossover with A Nightmare on Elm Street at the time.
[Producer] Frank Mancuso Jr. came to me… he wanted me to do another film after we did [Jason Lives]. He said,...

Stoner comedians Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong are classic cut-ups — but imagine if they got cut up by that ultimate slasher villain Jason Voorhees. Tom McLoughlin, the writer-director of 1986’s “Jason Lives: Friday the 13th VI,” said he once pitched the idea of a mashup of the two big-screen franchises to “Friday the 13th” series producer Frank Mancuso Jr. “What if we do ‘Cheech and Chong Meets Jason?'” McLoughlin recalled telling Mancuso on Wednesday’s edition of horror filmmaker Mick Garris’ Post Mortem podcast. “They’re like camp counselors or something. It’s like, ‘Hey, man, I saw Jason out there.

Juicing up a Melville- like stoic crime fantasy with superb car stunt work puts director John Frankenheimer back in the game, with a worthy project.

A film that has been a longtime favorite of mine ever since I discovered it on VHS as a kid decades (and decades) ago, April Fool’s Day recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. To mark the occasion, I was fortunate enough to round up several cast members, as well as director Fred Walton, to chat about the horror comedy that dared to turn the slasher subgenre on its head back in 1986.
April Fool’s Day brought together a talented crew of young actors, including Deborah Foreman, Amy Steel, Tom Wilson, Deborah Goodrich, Ken Olandt, Clayton Rohner, Leah Pinsent, Jay Baker, and Griffin O’Neal, who all gathered on Victoria Island in British Columbia to create a mystery-fueled horror comedy that’s hugely underrated and was certainly ahead of its time.

Creating a slasher movie in 1986 wasn’t a monumental feat, as the horror genre had seen its fair share of cinematic killers over the years, but it was a culmination of many elements that made April Fool’s Day one of the best of its era. With a focused and experienced director at the helm, a clever script filled with laughs and unexpected thrills, and an affable ensemble of actors who were infectiously likeable and endlessly talented, April Fool’s Day is an underappreciated gem and is truly unlike any other genre film of its, or any, time.
Written by Danilo Bach and directed by Fred Walton, April Fool’s Day follows a group of college students—Kit (Amy Steel), Rob (Ken Olandt), Nikki (Deborah Goodrich), Chaz (Clayton Rohner), Arch (Tom Wilson), Harvey (Jay Baker), Skip (Griffin O’Neal), and Nan (Leah Pinsent)—who head out to their pal Muffy...

Today, the cult horror comedy April Fool’s Day celebrates its 30th anniversary. Written by Danilo Bach (Beverly Hills Cop) and directed by Fred Walton (1979’s When A Stranger Calls), the film follows a group of college students who spend spring break at their friend Muffy St. John’s family estate, unaware that the weekend will be filled with frights and unexpected surprises.
Released the same weekend as The Money Pit, April Fool’s Day became a modest success for Paramount Pictures, taking in $13 million during its three-week theatrical run and finding even more of an audience once it was released on VHS. Even though it has largely flown under the radar over the last 30 years, Walton’s slasher send-up with an Agatha Christie flair has remained a beloved cult film among genre fans and this writer in particular.

With a TV series take on the Friday the 13th film series now in development at The CW, horror fans may be reminded of Friday the 13th: The Series, the late ’80s show that had nothing to do with Jason Voorhees or Camp Crystal Lake, but instead centered on antique store owners seeking to capture and lock away cursed items wreaking havoc outside their shop's doors.
If you're nostalgic for Friday the 13th: The Series, then you'll be pleased to know that all three seasons (72 episodes) of the beloved show were recently added to Amazon Prime Instant Video for fans and Prime members to enjoy.

With the recent successes of such TV series as "American Horror Story," "Hannibal" and Showtime's "Penny Dreadful," horror is hot on the small-screen right now -- so much so that in addition to MTV's forthcoming small-screen "Scream" spinoff, TV studios are in the midst of bringing a horde of cinematic fright-film properties to television, ranging from "Shutter Island" to "The Devil's Advocate" to "The Mist." In light of this, I've taken a look back at eight previous horror movie-to-tv translations and analyzed why they hit -- or didn't -- with audiences. "Bates Motel" (A&E) Based on: "Psycho" Aired: 2013-present Why it did (or didn't) work:a great pedigree ("Lost" showrunner Carlton Cuse), a terrific cast (Vera Farmiga, Freddie Highmore) and generally positive critical notices gave "Bates Motel" a sheen of respectability that worked well in this Golden Age of prestige television. The show has so far aired three successful seasons...

It would seem that Jason Voorhees really does go on forever. After the original movie was released in 1980, it was not just the career of the young Kevin Bacon that was spawned, but an entire mythology that would run endlessly into the most fantastical of directions. Now, apparently, Jason will rise again in a new Friday The 13th TV series.
For the writer/director of the original, Sean S. Cunningham, his attempt to cash in on the success of Halloween two years previously was seemingly a simple story of a vengeful mother, who – lost in grief for her drowned child – goes on a killing spree at an idyllic camp on the shores of Crystal Lake. By the time it reached theatres, however, it had captured the imaginations of an entire generation, and entered into the annals of pop culture.

One of the staples of '70s and '80s slasher flicks is the use of the calendar for easy source material. While most slashers from the '80s using date-based themes were attempting to capitalize on the success of John Carpenter's Halloween (which was blandly titled The Babysitter Murders before the filmmakers wisely turned their attention to our favorite holiday), the tradition dates back even further, to Bob Clark's 1974 chiller Black Christmas. By the mid-'80s, the “holiday horror” formula was mostly played out – not just because the genre was losing steam, but also because there weren't very many horror-friendly dates left on the calendar. But by 1986, there was one day left that still held potential for a body-count whodunit – one traditionally set aside for pranks and other malicious mischief. Shot in Canada, with Friday the 13th franchise heavyweight Frank Mancuso Jr. producing, April Fool's Day...

Boss Media has come on board Wake Cycle, snapping up Christian Cantamessa and Chris Pasetto's postapocalyptic sci-fi spec, reports Variety. Cantamessa, lead designer and co-writer of the vidgame "Red Dead Redemption," will direct. "The pic takes place in an underground hyperbaric facility, where the world's greatest scientists are placed after a nuclear fallout. "Wake Cycle" refers to the 90 minutes of available air every six months that allows two custodial workers to maintain the facility -- but when one of their sleep tanks is damaged, they engage in a life-and-death struggle." Cantamessa has been working as a designer in the gaming industry since 1996 and has written and designed numerous games for Rockstar, including "Manhunt," "Manhunt 2" and "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas." Cantamessa and Pasetto co-wrote the indie film "How I Survived the Zombie Apocalypse." A partnership between Frank Mancuso Jr. and Eric Gores, Boss will fund production and begin casting immediately.

Story. Story. Story. Behind every great film is a polished script. Just ask two watershed movies from the 80′s: The Hitcher and Near Dark. Both have a lot more room upstairs than your average fright flick, and thanks to screenwriter Eric Red, they showed the genre could be visceral and classy. Eric has since gone on to direct the werewolf thriller Bad Moon and the J-Horror inspired 100 Feet. This brings me to Body Parts, a picture that met many obstacles upon its release some twenty years ago, and now is considered a cult classic in many circles.
Jason Bene: The Hitcher and Near Dark are both masterpieces of the horror genre, but they are more than that, as they address the darker aspects of human nature. Those themes continue with your 1991 movie Body Parts. Where does that no-nonsense approach to terror come from?
Eric Red: I try to go...

What better movie to review to start off April than “April Fools Day” (1986)! This movie has garnered a cult following since its inception in 1986 from Paramount Pictures. It’s a sometimes hard to find Canadian horror movie as Paramount hasn’t released it much. It is available on Paramount VHS and single disc DVD in 2003 and a double feature in a later DVD. There are two endings to this film. The second version has never seen the light of day on any of the releases and only prints have been shown online.
The movie follows the tradition more of “Halloween” over “Friday the 13th” as it relies heavily on suspense over suspense/gore. This movie was spawned in the mid 1980s when slashers were dying off and became lackluster. The musical score was composed by Michael Bernstein, whom may know composed “Nightmare on Elm Street.

Every slasher fan has their own choice as the best in the original Jason Voorhees film series, and mine is Friday The 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. From its opening title that winks at the James Bond flicks, this entry provided a welcome sense of knowing humor to the by-then repetitious proceedings, without making fun of Jason himself. (As writer/director Tom McLoughlin has often stated, and does so again on the new Deluxe Edition DVD, that was one of franchise producer Frank Mancuso Jr.’s directives when McLoughlin took this gig.)
Those light touches, and the general panache McLoughlin brings to the film, were a refreshing change from the crudities of the previous A New Beginning (which doesn’t actually sport a Part V on screen—and, as mentioned on its own Deluxe disc, was actually called Repetition during filming). Director/co-writer Danny Steinmann does bring a rude energy to this entry,...
