1. Let the Right One In (2008)
R | 114 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror
Oskar, an overlooked and bullied boy, finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl.
Director: Tomas Alfredson | Stars: Kåre Hedebrant, Lina Leandersson, Per Ragnar, Henrik Dahl
Votes: 226,872 | Gross: $2.12M
This film is not in English. It is still better to watch this version with the voice over than to watch the English remake. This film shows us that even the best vampires are still parasites. Let the Right One In reveals at its core without the fluff, what the human experience feels like. I rate this film as the best vampire film of the modern era, without a doubt.
2. Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994)
R | 123 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror
A vampire tells his epic life story: love, betrayal, loneliness, and hunger.
Director: Neil Jordan | Stars: Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Antonio Banderas, Kirsten Dunst
Votes: 347,715 | Gross: $105.26M
All about the cast? Not exactly but it certainly doesn't hurt.
3. 30 Days of Night (2007)
R | 113 min | Action, Horror, Thriller
After an Alaskan town is plunged into darkness for a month, it is attacked by a bloodthirsty gang of vampires.
Director: David Slade | Stars: Josh Hartnett, Melissa George, Danny Huston, Ben Foster
Votes: 189,524 | Gross: $39.57M
30 Days of Night saves the vampiric horror film. At a time when love stories and coming of age adventures have taken over the genre, this film reminds us that we may not want to see what is going bump in the night.
4. Thirst (2009)
R | 134 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror
Through a failed medical experiment, a priest is stricken with vampirism and is forced to abandon his ascetic ways.
Director: Park Chan-wook | Stars: Song Kang-ho, Kim Ok-bin, Choi Hee-jin, Seo Dong-soo
Votes: 51,436 | Gross: $0.30M
Great take on a vampire film. Thirst is not the only vampire movie to offer us a priest as a vampire, but it certainly does it best.
5. Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
R | 128 min | Fantasy, Horror, Romance
The centuries old vampire Count Dracula comes to England to seduce his barrister Jonathan Harker's fiancée Mina Murray and inflict havoc in the foreign land.
Director: Francis Ford Coppola | Stars: Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins, Keanu Reeves
Votes: 238,601 | Gross: $82.52M
Even though it isn't my style of vampire at all, I have to respect the classic poly-morphing vampire.
6. Shadow of the Vampire (2000)
R | 92 min | Drama, Horror
The filming of Nosferatu (1922) is hampered by the fact that its star Max Schreck is taking the role of a vampire far more seriously than seems humanly possible.
Director: E. Elias Merhige | Stars: John Malkovich, Willem Dafoe, Udo Kier, Cary Elwes
Votes: 44,191 | Gross: $8.29M
There are going to be a few homage picks to the classic Nosferatu style of vampire films. This certainly is one of the tops. In my book it edges out a couple of the others mainly because of its cast, but also because this is a list of modern vampire films. The others go to far to stay classic.
7. Underworld (2003)
R | 121 min | Action, Fantasy, Thriller
Selene, a vampire warrior, is entrenched in a conflict between vampires and werewolves, while falling in love with Michael, a human who is sought by werewolves for unknown reasons.
Director: Len Wiseman | Stars: Kate Beckinsale, Scott Speedman, Shane Brolly, Michael Sheen
Votes: 285,314 | Gross: $51.97M
I will admit, I always liked blondes until 2003. The blue eyed dark hair Selene played by Kate Beckensale changed my tune. While similar in style, this beats out Blade in action and plot. The cast is incredible going on to create an entire movie franchise that even had a movie survive with just the supporting cast. This is not the best vampire film of all time but it was revolutionary. This did for vampire/werewolves movies what 28 Days Later did for zombie films.
8. Byzantium (2012)
R | 118 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror
Residents of a coastal town learn, with deathly consequences, the secret shared by the two mysterious women who have sought shelter at a rundown hotel.
Director: Neil Jordan | Stars: Saoirse Ronan, Gemma Arterton, Sam Riley, Caleb Landry Jones
Votes: 45,964 | Gross: $0.08M
We are starting to see a trend of films like this. This one just barely finds a way to put itself a cut above the others of this particular style.
9. Cronos (1992)
R | 94 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror
A mysterious device designed to provide its owner with eternal life resurfaces after four hundred years, leaving a trail of destruction in its path.
Director: Guillermo del Toro | Stars: Federico Luppi, Ron Perlman, Claudio Brook, Margarita Isabel
Votes: 33,147 | Gross: $0.62M
This also pushes the limits on the traditional vampire. I like it however.
10. Let Me In (I) (2010)
R | 116 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror
A bullied young boy befriends a young female vampire who lives in secrecy with her guardian.
Director: Matt Reeves | Stars: Kodi Smit-McPhee, Chloë Grace Moretz, Richard Jenkins, Cara Buono
Votes: 127,367 | Gross: $12.13M
They picked the right actress. It was going to be tough to live up to the original but it does well enough to find a spot on this list.
11. Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)
R | 123 min | Comedy, Drama, Fantasy
A depressed musician reunites with his lover. However, their romance, which has already endured several centuries, is disrupted by the arrival of her uncontrollable younger sister.
Director: Jim Jarmusch | Stars: Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska, John Hurt
Votes: 108,211 | Gross: $1.88M
Much to like about this film. It does something so classic that even the Nosferatu buffs have got to respect. It makes living forever seem like such a drag. The cast is incredible, its literally a list of whose who in the supporting cast world. Mia Wasikowska needs her own vampire film asap!
12. Dracula Untold (2014)
PG-13 | 92 min | Action, Drama, Fantasy
As his kingdom is being threatened by the Turks, young prince Vlad Tepes must become a monster feared by his own people in order to obtain the power needed to protect his own family, and the families of his kingdom.
Director: Gary Shore | Stars: Luke Evans, Dominic Cooper, Sarah Gadon, Art Parkinson
Votes: 207,751 | Gross: $56.28M
Exceptional tale about the sacrifice it takes to love. This movie does so much right for most of the film, I can forgive the terrible ending. Watch it if you want action! Watch it if you want to identify with a character who has to make a choice between himself and those that he loves. The movie combines my two favorite genres which is why it made it so high on the list. Watch this one!
13. Blade (1998)
R | 120 min | Action, Horror, Sci-Fi
A half-vampire, half-mortal man becomes a protector of the mortal race, while slaying evil vampires.
Director: Stephen Norrington | Stars: Wesley Snipes, Stephen Dorff, Kris Kristofferson, N'Bushe Wright
Votes: 299,209 | Gross: $70.09M
I am all for hybrid vampires. This makes the list purely for entertainment purposes.
14. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009)
R | 92 min | Action, Fantasy, Thriller
A prequel centered on the origins of the centuries-old feud between the race of aristocratic vampires and their former slaves, the Lycans.
Director: Patrick Tatopoulos | Stars: Rhona Mitra, Michael Sheen, Bill Nighy, Steven Mackintosh
Votes: 167,929 | Gross: $45.80M
Not many films have vampires as social creatures. I like it. The backstory for the movie franchise, this film does a great job setting up a believable vampire lycan relationship. I see much symbolism in this film.
15. Midnight Son (2011)
Not Rated | 88 min | Horror
Forced by a disease to drink human blood, Jacob must control his violent tendencies as local law enforcement narrow their focus on him as a suspect in a series of grisly murders.
Director: Scott Leberecht | Stars: Zak Kilberg, Maya Parish, Jo D. Jonz, Larry Cedar
Votes: 1,913
A few things I like. A vampire with a real job! It does some things very well and others not so well. With genre movies you learn to love the good stuff and forget the bad. That is probably how this makes the cut.
16. A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014)
Not Rated | 101 min | Drama, Horror, Romance
In the Iranian ghost-town Bad City, a place that reeks of death and loneliness, the townspeople are unaware they are being stalked by a lonesome vampire.
Director: Ana Lily Amirpour | Stars: Sheila Vand, Arash Marandi, Marshall Manesh, Mozhan Navabi
Votes: 38,660
This film is another foreign. I was suggested to watch it from a comment on this list. Happy I did, I knew it would be here. It isn't to easy to get a copy of this film but it is worth it. I honestly am debating moving it higher on the list. Right now I suggest you watch it not only because of the neat storyline, but also because it is one of the few black and white movies I can watch all the way through and still come out feeling like I live in 2016. I will be watching it again with fresh eyes and making adjustments as needed.
17. Daybreakers (2009)
R | 98 min | Action, Horror, Sci-Fi

Votes: 135,067 | Gross: $30.10M
Interesting take. Top of the line distopian vampire film.

Viago, Deacon, and Vladislav are vampires who are struggling with the mundane aspects of modern life, like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts.
Directors: Jemaine Clement, Taika Waititi | Stars: Jemaine Clement, Taika Waititi, Cori Gonzalez-Macuer, Jonny Brugh
Votes: 200,411 | Gross: $3.33M
The funniest Vampire film ever made? I think it does some cool stuff but also does not fit in with the other films on this list. It is a completely different genre, which is one of the main reasons why I struggled for a year to add this to the list. I finally gave in because it is simply a great vampire film even though it is a comedy. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
