Disappointing. But there's a reason for that.
14 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Here's a quick rundown:

Until minute 23 - Robin Smiths own composition stuff and nothing to do with Mike Oldfield. A bit egotistical.

Minute 24 - Moonlight Shadow - brutalized, sounds like a sixth form leaving do. Painful.

Minute 28. Tubular bells starts - but you wouldn't know it until minute 30. Cue lots of really artsy farts dancers doing their "self expression" thing that bears zero relevance or timing to the music. I would have much preferred some Pink Floyd style projected images. The rendition of TB isn't too bad, but it's an "interpretation" not a reproduction. By now the dancers have turned into gymnasts and circus acrobats. By minute 50 the dancers are standing on each other's heads and climbing up bedsheets. This all goes quite well until the actual Tubular Bells come out which sound like my Grans doorbell.

Minute 58. Side 2 starts and merrily plods along to more random circus acts.

Minute 69 - dancing is now getting weird. Looks like a mixture of uncontrollable fitting and practicing the Heimlich maneuver.

Minute 71 and Piltdown Man shows up and sounds like an American Rapper being arrested under protest.

Minute 82 and it all winds up with a human pyramid for some reason. The finale is a jolly rendition of Sailors Hornpipe.

This may all sound negative, but it's not. The players are clearly incredibly talented musicians. The problem is, the source material is so exceptional, it can't be reproduced. The following day I played the 1973 analogue recording and wept copiously. That's the genius and power of the original, and it's impossible to replicate.

I struggled with this film ..
6 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The acting is incredible, it's an A list cast and man do they deliver. The sets, production quality and period accuracy is astonishing. There's a problem though. I felt like they made a superb 3 hour film, chopped it into 100 parts, and then stuck them all back together again at random.

It would have been far better if they had made a more conventional chronological biopic. Instead it leaps about through time and styles, with elements of fantasy thrown in too for good measure. For much of the film I was just confused. "What's happening and when?" Was my main question throughout the film. Just as I picked up a clue what was going on it jumped to another time frame.

Overall a bit too much style over substance. Only one person to blame for that.

I tried - it really did

On paper this was right up my street, sci-fi, alternative reality, and challenging concepts. The cast is fabulous, wonderful to see Ke Huy Quan back on screen, and Stephanie Hsu was just fantastic in "Mrs Maisel", I really hope she gets more major roles.

But .... It just went over my head. It's like an endless series of vaguely connected visuals. It's done very well, and is great to look at, but overall it's just a bit too bonkers for me. I can see why some people like it though, it's one of those films that you either get, or you don't. I didn't.

Five stars, one for the three main character performances, and two for the Rocks. The Rocks were the best part. By far.

Sorry, but this is just plain lazy.

Who signs off on these projects? Take a bit from every tired action movie formula, stir in 200 million bucks, yes TWO HUNDRED million, and what comes out is as original as having custard with your apple pie.

Gosling spends over two hours looking like he would rather be eating cold sick than continue doing this film. The money clearly went into the action scenes, but they are now just routine.

I could have written a better film script than this, and I'm rubbish ! Please find some new ideas or just save your next 200 million until you do.

... that feels like I've just watched a very long intro scene to a video game ? There should be a statement at the end of the film saying "No actual aircraft were hurt in the making of this movie".

Warning: Spoilers
If you were a late teen or in your early twenties in the mid 1980's the world was very different. No computers, no mobile phones, no internet, no DVD's. We had cars though, and bikes, and we loved them, and we loved films too. The original Top Gun captured this moment in time perfectly, and gave us a thrilling ride like we had never seen before. The humour, the games, the bikes, the aircraft and my word, those flying scenes. We went back to the cinema to see it again and again, and spent the following decades quoting the movie. As time went on, it remained like a static snapshot in time to perfectly represent that magical point in our lives for so many of us.

Now, 36 years later, we are a generation that has lost our parents, we've had our own children who have moved on themselves, and we now approach the end of our own careers and our young selves are gone forever.

This film is the missing bookend to that whole generation. The original was there for the start of our young adult lives, and this new film now marks the end. It's magnificent.

I'm 55, but yesterday, just for one last night, I was 19 again. Thank you.

Great acting, forgettable film.

Warning: Spoilers
Middle aged academic goes on holiday alone. She was a bit rubbish as a mother and feels guilty about it. Meets another young mum who's struggling too, and then she goes home again.

That's it, really, that's it. Nothing happens, no drama, no mystery, no surprises, no suspense, nobody dies, it's very bleugghhh. It gets 5 stars automatically for the incomparable Olivia Colman, but other than that there's very little in it. They even make the Greek scenery look like Margate in January.

Very surprised at low reviews !
10 January 2022
This is an excellent series, and I'm amazed at the poor reviews ! If you like linear plotted TV spoonfed to you then this probably isn't for you. There's plenty of "who the hell is that?" moments, but trust me, it all fits together quite excellently. You have to watch it, and give it your whole attention. The poor reviews are probably from people who spent half the time on a phone.

Starts off very well ... but then
26 October 2021
The first 30 minutes were genuinely very funny with Bill Murray and Iggy Pop in particular really hitting the mark. From there though, it just goes downhill and is ultimately pointless. The great Tilda Swinton is largely wasted, other characters are just pointless, and no spoilers, but it gets a bit silly. Overall 6 for a couple of genuine moments amongst the largely forgettable. With the great actors it has, it should have been much better.

Shockingly enjoyable

Anything with Joseph Gilgun in is just pure gold, I've just loved the guy ever since Misfits. His performance here is so rich in character, subtly and language that it's just utterly joyous to watch. Another performance of note is Dominic West as the doctor. You can just tell that he's loving every single second of it.

Season 1 was an 8, Season 2 was a 9, and season 3 is a 10. It just gets better.

I suspect most of the poor reviews here are from younger people perhaps. It takes a bit of life experience to appreciate this film maybe. The lead characters of Freeman and Baccarin work fabulously together. It's quite gentle, charming and subtly amusing.

The only negative is Martin Freeman's fake American accent. I'm British and even I thought it was terrible !

Warning: Spoilers
Take Memphis Belle, add an episode of the Twilight Zone, stir in the first Alien movie, nick a soundtrack from Bladerunner, and then stick Kate Bush on the end. Imagine that lot, all done for the price of a Pepperoni Pizza, and you pretty much have this big bucket of crazy (but without any of the laws of physics)

I gave it 3 stars because it was so bad it was almost watchable, but only once in a lifetime or ten.

Top quality entertainment
14 June 2021
Think about this. There are no specially built sets, no actors, no extras, no special effects, no CGI, no green screen, no costumes, no make-up, nothing. Some of it is even filmed on a mobile phone ! This is the genius of Clarkson, he's created the highest rated show in the history of Amazon. Out of basically nothing. Incredible.

It's a mocumentary, but you're never sure which bits are moc, and which are doc. It's not a laugh out loud comedy, but much more gently observational.

Lucy is the stand out character, incredibly likeable, funny and delightful to listen too. The backing music by Jethro Tull (mainly) is very fitting, and it's introduced me to Jake Thackray ! Highly recommended.

Written by an 11 year old boy.
26 February 2021
Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel, Charles Dance, Damien Lewis, Toby Jones, James Franco ... How on earth they managed to persuade that lot to make this tosh is beyond me. The script was clearly written by a 11 year old boy and a couple of his mates. Bizarrely, the special effects aren't that bad, and the acting talent is exceptional. The cast were clearly having a great laugh though and got paid a lot, so something came out of this childish mess at least.

Warning: Spoilers
As a huge fan of Secret Army, I finally found this unbroadcast final episode after 35 years

Firstly, I can see why this wasn't broadcast at the time. It's somewhat haphazard in its production, and doesn't fit at all well with the 'wartime' episodes. The concept of this episode is set in 1969 during the making of a fictional retrospective documentary about Lifeline. It was clearly a huge change for the Secret Army production crew, who had a good go at it, but failed to achieve their objective, and they possibly didn't actually know what that was.

But ... For fans of the series, this should be watched. Our historical perspective of WW2 has changed enormously since 1979 when it was made, and it makes more sense now than back then.

It has a very overt anti-communist message, especially the final scene (which is beyond dreadful) But, again after 40 years, this too can be seen as the product of it's time and the history of that decade.

Performances by Bernard Hepton, Clifford Rose and Angela Richards are excellent as you would expect. Juliet Hammond Hill as a supposedly 50 year old anti-communist freedom fighter is a bit harder to accept though.

If you have a deep appreciation of Secret Army, then watch this. If not - don't.

Beautiful

Warning: Spoilers
The production quality, the attention to detail, the characterisation, the sense of drama, the huge range of themes it addresses - utter perfection. Also, the chess is done magnificently, portraying genuine games and correctly named strategies. In reality, high level Chess is much slower and with far more draws of course, but heck, that's totally forgivable.

I think it very very loosely has parallels with Bobby Fischer who was the actual US Champion at the time. He was famously a child prodigy with a troubled life, who went on to win the world championship against the Russian Boris Spassky in 1972.

Where does one begin !?
23 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
With any SBC film you kinda know what you're going to get, and this doesn't disappoint. It is simultaneously hilarious, uncomfortable, genius, depraved, and jaw dropping in its brutal exposure of ignorance.

The highlight is actually the actor who plays Borats daughter (Maria Balakova) Great performance and very gutsy lady to perform like that under what must be bizarre circumstances. Also, the scene shot in a Synagogue with a pair of elderly Jewish ladies is very touching indeed.

It's obvious that filming was caught out by Covid, and the ending a little rushed, but overall it works very well.

Warning: Spoilers
Nothing special here that hasn't been done many times. Senile dementia is a terrible condition, and effects people and there carers in incredibly demanding ways. We sadly all know this already.

Rachel Brosnahan is as fabulous as ever though. She has an inner sparkle that comes through in everything she does.

Initially promising ... but ...
15 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a huge fan of "The Prisoner" and for the first half an hour I was extremely pleased to see so many common themes. A woman wakes up in a mysteriously beautiful 'Village' not sure where she is, why, or who to trust. There is a "Number 2" figure, ever present video surveillance, and announcements over a Tannoy. Whoever is in charge uses mind altering drugs and brainwashing techniques to try and manipulate the residents, and our central character tries to escape ...

All jolly good, but then it turns into a dystopian sci-fi of very dubious believability. It turns away from The Prisoner, and becomes more of a ripoff of Labyrinth and The Island. Overall it's pleasing on the eye with fabulous costumes, but ultimately unsatisfying.

A few highs, but more lows.
7 October 2020
Six separate stories, all filmed and acted utterly beautifully, but with varying degrees of interest and purpose:

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" 10/10 A joy from start to end, really lulls you into a Kill Bill level of anticipation.

"Near Algodones" 8/10 Starts out as good as 'the first story but ultimately falls flat.

"Meal Ticket" 2/10 This is where the whole project turns, this is just mentally disturbing with little to recommend apart from the cinematography.

"All Gold Canyon" 5/10 Largely entertaining, but ends unsatisfactorily.

"The Gal Who Got Rattled" 6/10 This is the most magnificently shot part of the whole film, great promise, but could have had so many better endings.

"The Mortal Remains" 1/10 No point to this one at all, dull and disappointing final segment.

If you only have half an hour to spend, just watch the first two, forget the rest.

I really really tried but ....
29 September 2020
On paper this was very much my thing. Offbeat, quirky comedy. In reality though, this is unmitigated rubbish. It's pointless, unfunny, unmemorable claptrap. I have no idea what people see in it, and I really struggled to get to the end - which was simply pointless. If you love this film, then I am very pleased for you. If you think it's completely forgettable, then you're not alone.
